I've undone your recent addition to telescope as the reference tags were invalid - no references provided. Get it right in your sandbox prior to adding to the article.

[edit]

So you guys, we have selected the Telescope to be our topic to write about for our wiki assignment. YOU GUYS DOWN ADN JIGGY WITH THAT!!!

--Afra: hi guys! we're all clear about our parts right? and i just had a quick question, I'm adding to history section, so i was wondering if i should write in a paragraph format? or should i make it look like a timeline?

-- Ibrahim: Yes! Let's send everything to Phil by 10pm??

-- Ibrahim: Also, we need Phil's email address in order to email him our paragraphs

-- Ibrahim: I was thinking of doing the impact section on the impact on human development as well as maybe science? Let me know how that sounds

-- Phil: OK I'm here. Annotations are tough to find but I'm currently doing that. Ibrahim, that sounds like a great idea. Also, Afra, do the history as paragraphs. Wiki articles don't bother with timelines unless it's a big article. That or bands, weirdly enough.

--Afra: Ibrahim, that sounds good because then Zaynab can do a section about the research? and oh okay phil, i shall write in paragraph format. Just check it before you put it in though just to make sure i did right?

--Afra: we also need to post in the sandbox

--Ibrahim: Phil, what's your email address? Lol, what do we post in the sandbox?

--Phil: The sandbox is where we post changes to the page. Basically it serves as a free range for coding any page you want. I think (THINK) you copy paste stuff from the article and then fiddle around with in the sandbox. I would put my email address here but I don't know who can access this. Here, Afra, Zaynab, if any of you have Ibrahim's number I can text one of you can then you can send it to him.

--Zaynab: so I'm doing the research part right? and so we all doing one paragraph each?

--Afra: Zaynab, yes you are doing the research part. I'm gonna write 2 paragraphs about the history. Phyil, Ibrahim sent me his so i'll email it to you with mine

--Afra: how do we cite the sources? because on the wikipedia page, they have a small # in blue next at the end of the sentence. How do we do that?

--Phil: After the sentence, you put a < ref >. (there's normally no spaces, but I had to put them there so this shows up properly) Then you put the reference link in these [ ] brackets. Once you're done, you type </ref>.

--Afra: oh alright, thank you! I'm going to send to you very soon. I'll post the links I have used so far in the sandbox and i think all of us should? I'll also put a sentence with citation to see if it works.

--Afra: Ibrahim, do you have the cites you used? and you need to have in text citations as well, the way do on the actual wikipedia page

--Phil: I already added a couple of new citations to the section that needed them, just letting you guys know. That section is in the sandbox currently.

--Ibrahim: I posted my paragraph in the sandbox, as well as sent it to Afra. Let me know what you guys think.

--Zaynab: yah Ibrahim your paragraph looks good but don't you need to add the citations?

--Afra: I think you should Ibrahim, so you have some credibility right. I also posted my part, history and I added a very small paragraph about the future telescope that is supposed to be launched in the upcoming years. I posted it with and without the citation. please read it and let me know what you guys thing and Phil, if you could check if my citation was done right? thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.230.161.133 (talk) 03:30, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

--Zaynab: Yah Ibrahim add the citations if possible and Afra I read what you wrote, it's good. Hopefully the citation part turns out properly.

--Phil: Afra, the paragraph is good, and the citations are done correctly. They're placed a little weird though. Stick to the end of sentences, even if there's multiple citations. It looks a little neater. Ibrahim, good job. As everyone said, put in citations and it should be good. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.229.123.135 (talk) 03:41, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

--Afra: Phil, I added the citations at the end of the sentence, or thats how it shows when I save the page :S and at the bottom of the page it says "Cite error: There are < ref > tags on this page, but the references will not show without a

template or a < references / > tag; see the help page."

what does that mean?

--Phil: Weird, it looks like you did it right. I dunno what's up with the error message. I did notice though that you cite the same source a couple of times in a row every so often. Only cite when you're at the end of the section that relies on that source.

--Afra: i thought you were supposed to cite every sentence if it was not another authors idea even if a couple of sentences in a row are from the same source. I think the error message means that we need a reference list because right now, all of our citation has no list to refer to? so we have to create a reference list

--Phil: Okay, then we can keep the citations as they are. Maybe the message is there because of Ibrahim's uncited source?

--Zaynab: goood jobb guys

--Phil: AAAAAA someone needs to take a screenshot of the page before we make our changes to it!

--Afra: I'll take the snapshot of the page and i think figured out how to do that reference list, you guys can look at my part because we do need a refernce list. So if you guys are citing anything, please make a reference list

--Afra: I took the snapshots, it was 10 pages and phil, text me your email address so i can send you the picture and also make sure you highlight the changed parts

-Zaynab: y'alls I added onto Afra's part, the future section. Can you guys read it and see if its fine. And reference list?

--Phil: Looks good, Zaynab. Afra, I texted you my email.

--Afra: I'm gonna email it to you right now Phil and Zainab, I fixed your citation so your reference list works, I hope that's right because that is how I did mine. That way, when you go down to the list, you can actually see the link and click on it and it will take you the website but its looks good otherwise :)

--Phil: Okay guys, the email still isn't in my inbox but I'm sure it will turn up. I have to go to bed soon I can wake up early. In the morning I'll do the necessary stuff and then we can hand this in. Great work today, everyone.

--Afra: that sounds good, and if there is anything missing or you need help with in the morning, just give me a call. Good job you guys!

--Ibrahim: How do I add them on here??! --Ibrahim: Nvm got it

--Phil: Back. Who's awake? Afra, the email you sent looks REALLY good. We should hand this in soon.

--Ibrahim: I'm up! Are we looking good? Everything put together?

--Afra: Im awake, and thank you! did you need me to take a snap shot of the sandbox and talk page?

--Phil: That would be excellent, thanks.

--Phil: Okay, I have the pictures. Now someone remind me how we hand all of this in again. :P

--Afra: Phil, i just sent you the snapshots for the talk and sandbox page. did you already make the changes on the website? if you did, then did you highlight the changes and take a snapshot?

--Phil: Will do that right now.

--Afra: alright, and after you do that, i sent you a list of everything that we need to hand in? so just put all of that together in one document or pdf format. he just wants all of it to be together so he doesnt have to keep opening different documents

--Phil: Okay, everything is working fine, but the citations still say they are lacking references.

--Phil: Also, we need an "after" screenshot but first we need to to figure out this stuff with the references.

--Afra: do you mean your part? where it said you need more citations? its okay if it still says that i guess. I know that the way the references are done for the impact, history, and future section are fine because the cite error message went away

--Phil: Nah, my part's fine, it'll keep saying that for a while. Look at the page. Then look at the references section at the bottom.

--Afra: oh okay, and i did but i dont see anything :S Reference List: ^ a b c d e f g h i http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/07/telescopes/telescopes-interactive ^ http://www.thefreedictionary.com/spiral+nebula ^ a b http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/9-12/features/telescope_feature_912.html ^ http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/resources/explorations/groundup/lesson/scopes/hubble/index.php ^ a b http://ngst.gsfc.nasa.gov/ ^ http://ieet.org/index.php/IEET/more/dvorsky20100923 ^ http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=ten-telescopes-galileo ^ The James-Clerk-Maxwell Observatory: The largest submillimetre radio telescope in the world ^ ESA/Hubble - Hubble's Instruments: WFC3 - Wide Field Camera 3 ^ [1] ^ [2] ^ Barrie William Jones, The search for life continued: planets around other stars, page 111 ^ a b NuStar: Instrumentation: Optics ^ Wolter, H. thats the reference list and i checked the links, they work it looks weird on this page though

--Phil: Yeah, I get error messages for nearly all the citations. I'm checking the help page right now but it looks like we did everything right so I don't know.

--Afra: it doesnt show up when i look at the page :S im so confused

--Phil: The error messages don't show up?

--Afra: no, we're lookin at the same page though

--Phil: We are. Weird.

--Afra: so what do we do?

--Phil: Well, we have about an hour left. If it looks good enough then just take the screen caps and I'll send everything in.

--Afra: dont you have to take the screenshots after you've added in our parts to the actual telescopes page?

--Phil: Already did.

--Afra: oh okay, thank you. I'm leaving to go to class so just text me if you have any questions

This isn't going to work, guys

As a matter of policy, one account, one user. I've asked another editor to give you advice on this also. And we need to know who is responsible for what edits. Dougweller (talk) 18:12, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He's right. It looks like there are four of you using this account, which is not permitted. It's important that you each create your own account, so we can track who is responsible for each edit. Once that happens you can all use this talk page to collaborate. I'll allow you some time to set those accounts up, but I'll have involve an administrator otherwise. --Jprg1966 (talk) 19:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
