Your submission at Articles for creation[edit]

I noticed your submission in Articles for creation, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Patrick E. McGovern. Thanks! It will be reviewed by a volunteer soon.

Before it can be added to Wikipedia, your submission should have references. All articles on Wikipedia should have inline, numbered references after facts, showing the 'reliable source' (a newspaper, book, etc.) where the information can be checked, so that all information is verifiable.

How to edit entry?

As I understand it, we need to include in-line references for this entry to be accepted by Wikipedia. Is anything else needed? Will it go through another review process?

Because I wasn't sure how to proceed, a shorter version was also submitted. The longer version is much-preferred.

Please advise as to how best to proceed.

You do need inline references, but these references should support Notability. At present, I don't see anything in the draft to indicate that he is notable. In addition the sentence In the popular imagination, he is known as the “Indiana Jones of Ancient Ales, Wines, and Extreme Beverages.” is problematic. At a minimum, it requires a reference, but it is hard to imagine a reference which would contend that this is true, so it may need to be reworded, if an appropriate reference is found. Otherwise, it will have to go.
Does he have an publications which appear in refereed journals? This will help, although discussion of such work will be even more help.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:49, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have familiarized myself much more with the ins and outs of Wikipedia, and edited the article close to a final version, I believe.

It should be noted that Patrick E. McGovern is very notable, having been listed in Who's Who in America. He has written or edited ten books and over 150 articles, most of which have been peer-reviewed. His book on Ancient Wine won the prestigious Grand-prix in Histoire, Littérature et Beaux-arts from the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) in Paris, the principal wine organization of the world. Uncorking the Past won an award from the Archaeological Institute of America, the largest such organization in the U.S. He lectures widely at museums and institutions in the U.S. and around the world. Recently, he gave the opening night address at the annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America in Philadelphia, a distinct honor. He is a consultant on many archaeological and scientific projects. He is a pioneer of the interdisciplinary field of Biomolecular Archaeology. He has been a visiting scholar and taught at many universities, including Penn. His work has been extensively profiled in popular outlets, e.g., see the July-Aug. issue of the Smithsonian magazine, Brew Masters on the Discovery Channel, etc.

I can certainly add more details to the write-up along these lines or others, if that will be helpful.

One problem that I did run into and couldn't solve was how to link to a non-Wikipedia entry or a Wikipedia entry when the title as such was not used in the article. I did discover a way around this by placing the weblink in square brackets after the text in the article, which produced another series of footnotes separate from the reference list. See Iran and Kavaklidere in the text for examples. Maybe, there's a better way to handle this?

By using the down arrow next to the 'Search' box, you prompt the 'Move' option. Consider adding the {{AFC submission}} template at the very top, then moving it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Patrick McGovern (archeologist) (or /Patrick E. McGovern) for review (there are currently 417 awaiting review, and 200~400+ are reviewed daily), or (not recommended), (no template) directly into article space Patrick McGovern (archeologist)/Patrick E. McGovern. Note that Patrick McGovern is what we call a disambiguation page, where he would be included, which allows readers to choose their destination. The article will be reviewed by a New Page Patroller (NPP), and may be propsed for deletion (I think this would be declined) or may be submitted for a deletion discussion (which take a week or more). Stay calm, many editors will look it over, apply 'Wikification' formatting, categories, and help improve it. This Smithsonian article refers to him as "the world’s foremost expert on ancient fermented beverages".[1]

This should meet 1/2 of the notability concerns; other available references should more than meet the rest, showing coverage in multiple independent sources. Initially, less is more: pick the most important detail from each source, understating so that the importance isn't lost in the volume.

Imaging instructions[edit]

Further up on this page, you mentioned that you did not have permission for the photo of Dr. McGovern in your working draft (presently located on your userpage) . Yes, you wil lneed to get written permission for its use. To use a picture on Wikipedia, we need permission from whoever owns it.

  • If it is your OWN picture - then you can just upload it yourself, at "Commons", saying "It is entirely my own work" - at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Upload .
  • If it is NOT YOURS, then the owner can give permission in two ways;
A) They could put it on a website (flickr, or their own site) with an appropriate licence, such as "Public Domain" or "Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike" (that is an option in flickr)
B) They could email us permission. You could ask them to do that, by sending them an email saying something like:
"Hi, I've written a page on Wikipedia, and I'd really like to add a picture - but as Wikipedia is FREE, we can only use freely-licenced pictures. If you have any which you can give permission for, please send me an email back with the text below, and the picture(s) attached."
-Then add a copy of this: http://enwp.org/user:chzz/help/myboilerplate (having filled the form out)
-And send the email (attached picture file + completed form) to: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

If Dr. McGovern wishes to release his copyright to the material in question then you need to consult Declaration of consent for all inquiries. Drwilliampepper - I am sorry that your first endeavor has been so difficult. The reason that your draft was deleted is because a large amount of the text in your submission came from a page at a website that Dr. McGovern holds the copyright on. In order for this content to be re-used on Wikipedia, two Declarations of consent for all inquiries must be filled out and emailed - one for re-use of the text and one for re-use of the image (which has a notice as being from the Penn Museum) - please follow the instructions at the Declarations page. You can also get additional help from our volunteers at the Wikipedia Editing Help Channel. I appreciate the thought but I am not a part of OTRS(the permissions folks), I'm just an interested editor who is trying to help you shepherd your material through the system, it is not really necessary for me to be notified. I have the material on my 'Watchlist' so if there are any posts on your talkpage about it or if the text is restored I should be notified. (By the way, it is not necessary for you to post both on my talk and yours, one talk page is sufficient.)
Hopefully the wheels are now turning for your draft on Dr. McGovern, I do not know what the possible timeline might be. You will need to keep an eye on your talk page and on whatever email address you have enabled for Wikipedia contact (it should show up on the left of your user talk page as "Email this user"). I think that your talk page or your email is where you will get any notices about the content's permissions being accepted and also about how to proceed.
If you are interested, it is easy to put a page on your Watchlist. See the empty star up at the top of any Wikipedia page? Click on it, it turns blue and you have just added that page to your Watchlist, now every time someone edits that page you will get a notice at your Watchlist. I believe that the permissions for the use of text and illustration for the Patrick E. McGovern article have been sent out and should have been received by the editors. It's been more than 2 weeks for the review, so I'm wondering how much longer it might take?; I cannot access the article until then, so cannot make any other changes.

Everything is there. Text and image are both now published under GNU and CC-BY-SA 3.0, with text permissions at ticket:2012032610009405 and image permissions at ticket:2012032810008573. For some reason I don't understand, I'm able to look at the tickets but not actually take any actions on them. The image should be credited to Pam Kosty, and the text to Patrick E. McGovern himself.
