Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, EDItEUR staff. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page User:EDItEUR staff/Thema (subject category scheme), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Theroadislong (talk) 16:48, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. 331dot (talk) 17:14, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Requested username:

Request reason:

I'm appealing the blocking of the account on the following basis

1. The account name is intended to indicate a commitment to transparency. I would rather Wikipedia readers know the information comes from an authoritative source rather than from an 'anonymous' username. However, if the user name is the issue, then I would he happy to change it – for example to Graham_at_EDItEUR.

2. EDItEUR is a not-for-profit that exists for the good of the global publishing business, which makes the majority of its work (including ONIX and Thema standard specifications) available free of charge to all. I have used my account (which is not shared by anyone else) to keep the long-established ONIX for Books page up to date for several years, including fixing broken third party links, removing commercial advertising and adding up-to-date information.

3. In requesting creation of pages on Thema and on EDItEUR itself today, I proposed relatively neutral and factual text, added external references to third-party publications as well as to articles written by EDItEUR, and references to authoritative sources. For a proposed Thema page, I used the ONIX page as a guide, and for the EDItEUR page, I used the page on a similar trade association, BISG. I don't believe the pages were 'promotional' in any commercial way.

4. I am writing – unpaid – as a knowledgeable specialist in metadata and identifiers in book publishing. I have not and will not contribute to pages outside my area of expertise. I've tried to provide useful information that I know people look for (I have been asked on more than a handful of occasions why there is no article on Thema for example, when it is Amazon's preferred subject category scheme (in Europe).

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. Yamla (talk) 16:13, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Role and/or group accounts are not permitted (such as "President of the United States", "Microsoft staff", "Ford CEO"). The username must indicate that your account is exclusively operated by a specific individual(your real name is not required). A name in the format of "Username of EDItUR" would be acceptable. Please alter your existing request per the instructions in the block notice to propose a new username(do not create an additional request). 331dot (talk) 18:27, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know quite what you mean by 'do not create another request' and fear that using "unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here" would do just that. I've indicated a possible alternative in the unblock appeal above.

I have altered your request with your proposed username. A heretofore uninvolved administrator will review your request. 331dot (talk) 18:40, 2 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are many editors who contribute within their area of expertise. There's nothing wrong with that. However, once this includes your employer, their services and products, or your own accomplishments, that's when you have to start paying a lot more attention to Wikipedia's guidelines. I would suggest that you read through Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, especially Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#COI editing. Our rules apply equally to everyone, regardless of who they work for (nonprofit, research institute, open source project, or Jimmy Wales himself when he's writing about the founding of Wikipedia).
