Now that you mention the incorrect addresses in the NRHP, I questioned House at 190 Bosporous Avenue. The street signs call it Bosphorous Avenue. I wonder if the street name changed? —Wknight94 (talk) 16:46, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roadtrip plans[edit]

I'm debating where to go next, once I get my fancy new digital camera. I think I've settled on the 27-Okeechobee-US1 plan. That is, driving down US 27, around Lake Okeechobee to the town of Okeechobee, then over to the east coast and up US 1. And/or A1A. Probably around Jupiter Inlet, then north. And taking as many pix along the way, natch. Notice how I'm completely avoiding the Palm Beach-Broward-Dade County megalopolis. This'll be a two-dayer (my first), I'll spend the night around Okeechobee (the town).

Another two-dayer would have to be to Pensacola and back. The panhandle is so cool, I want to see more of it. Did Quincy, Torreya State Park, Port St. Joe, Apalachicola, Carabelle, and Sopchoppy in one day. Crawfordville too, but it was after sundown and not enough light, so the pix of the courthouse didn't come out. That'll have to be part of a Tallahassee-ish area daytrip.

If anyone else who watches this page is thinking of doing major photo-ing, please to add a note, so's I know if I need to change my itinerary. There will be good pix of all the state NRHPs and parks, I vow. Maybe even by the end of the year. Though that may be overly ambitious, one does need to have goals...  :) -Ebyabe 19:26, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm planning on shooting the stuff in the Daytona area sometime soon, maybe some this weekend. I'm actually staying in Orange City now, so I was a little disappointed to see you got most of the stuff near there (although they are good pics so I can't complain too much :). Recury 19:06, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That would be lovely! Although the weather this weekend looks iffy, so good luck! I'm in Ocala, so not that far away.
Yeah, I hit Umatilla, then DeLeon Springs and headed south on US 17/92 until I got to Lake Mary. Great day until it got cloudy around Sanford.
Since you're there, maybe you can find the Orange City Colored School. I looked at the address, but I could only find a park; no building that looked historic enough to be it. It'd be great if you could.
If you could get pics of Hontoon Island State Park and Blue Spring State Park sometime, that'd be great too. There's supposedly an NRHP in the latter park, the Louis P. Thursby House.
Ah, yeah, forgot about the weather. Maybe not this weekend then, we'll see...Yeah, I've seen the Thursby House in Blue Springs before, shouldn't be too hard to get a nice pic of and I'll try and check out that school too. Recury 19:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Next roadtrip[edit]

Plan to go partly down US 27 and back. Hopefully I'll hit:

Auburndale
Clermont
Davenport
Dundee
Eustis
Fruitland Park
Groveland
Haines City
Howey in the Hills
Leesburg
Mount Dora
Okahumpka
Tavares
Winter Haven

Probably not this weekend (Feb 3-4), but maybe next (Feb 10-11) --Ebyabe 19:40, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After the tornadoes, I'm thinking the other direction may be better. I'm going to hit as many of the following counties as I can:
Columbia
Hamilton
Jefferson
Lafayette
Madison
Suwannee
Taylor
And since Sunday looks even better, I may venture out then too. More news at 11. ;) --Ebyabe 01:06, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Route planning aid[edit]

I've gotten rather good at streamlining my travels so as to see the most sites in the least amount of time. I humbly offer my services to any to whom I may be of assistance, doncha know. :) -Ebyabe 19:52, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old Lee County Courthouse[edit]

Would it be minded if I tweaked some of these? Adjust brightness and such, that is. I've done it occasionally with a some of mine. That's the great thing about digital photos, they can always be improved. :) --Ebyabe 03:42, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orange City Colored School[edit]

I found this article helpful in figuring out where that one was. They changed the name of it a couple times so it's now the Coleman Head Start Center. It isn't the most visually impressive building ever either, so I'm sure that made it more difficult. Recury 23:17, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! It also confirms one I was doubtful about, the DeLeon Springs Colored School. It was another that was at the right address, but didn't have any signage at all one way or the other. Now that I see the Orange City one, the two buildings could be twins. Probably made "on the cheap" because they were for the "colored" students, back in the day. The country's come a long way since then, thank goodness. I'm wondering if the other "colored" schools on the list will look the same. At least we'll have a better idea what to look for. --Ebyabe 01:01, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brevard[edit]

I uploaded a bunch of pictures for Brevard County sites today. I had trouble with a few. I think that I found the Dr. George E. Hill House, but the address wasn't marked clearly so I didn't upload it. The J. R. Field Homestead was down a posted "no trespassing" dirt road so I stayed away from that one. I accidentally skipped the Hotel Mims. I did take pictures of the Melbourne Beach Pier and the Aladdin Theater but these listings already have historic pictures in their listings. Should I replace the old picture with the new ones?Fl295 22:16, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bravo on Brevard! They were on my itinerary for my eventual down-and-around-Lake-Okeechobee-and-up-US-1 trip, so you've saved me much time that I can spend on other sites. Heck, I can catch the Hotel Mims easy when I make the trip.
Do replace the historic pics. I only added them to have something other than the maps, and I found them in the Florida Memory Project. I think the more recent ones are better for the infobox.
I know what you mean about the trespassing. There was a 4 foot tall stone fence around the Howey House, and I was tempted to go over it, but didn't. Thank god for optical zoom; I got great shots of the place anyway. After my near-arrest for getting too close when taking pics at Crystal River, I'm trying to be more cautious, doncha know. :)
Ah, the addresses, or lack thereof. Howey House was like that. Only address was "Citrus Avenue". But when I saw the mansion surrounded by the low stone fence, encompassing many acres, and with big old oaks scattered about it, I knew that was the one. Wound up confirming it a bit later. When you see enough of these places, you start to develop an eye for them. When in doubt, take the pic. But don't upload until you can confirm it's the right one. So you did precisely the right thing, imho. :)
Btw, would it be possible for you to copy the pics to WikiCommons? Or I could do so. I'm trying to organize the NRHP pics at Commons, and get them all in one place, as it were. Lemme know if you need help; I've developed some shortcuts to make the Commons upload process a bit easier. Again, thanks for all the pics. I'm thinking we may get pics for all the Florida NRHP sites within my lifetime! *lol*
Yes, I'd like to copy them to WikiCommons. Is there a shortcut to the process? Thanks!Fl295 20:48, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wish there was, but it's about as clunky as here. I've figured ways to streamline things a tad, sort of. If you go over there, I can walk you through some. You can find me over there at this location.

Gaps[edit]

Trying to fill the list with pics, like on the List of Florida state parks. The holes I'm especially keen to see filled are:

  • Alachua County - some of the littler towns, I should get these since they're so close
  • Collier County - mostly hard-to-find archaeological sites, it looks like, but a Naples one would be great
  • Duval County - a/k/a Jacksonville (why don't they just change it to Jacksonville-Duval County, like Miami-Dade County did?), a lot of the downtown ones are clustered together, it's on my itinerary, though if anyone gets some before me it's great
  • Indian River County
  • Levy County - close to me, try to get soon
  • Manatee County/Sarasota County - Sarasota's in both counties, kill two birds, want to get Madira Bickel Mounds especially since it's a state park
  • Martin County
  • Okeechobee County - the battlefield directions are vague, but it's an nhl, so that's the priority
  • Orange County - Orlando and surrounding area, dealing with the horror that is the construction on US 441 in the area
  • Palm Beach County - one from Boynton Beach or Lake Worth maybe? Or if someone's visiting Okeechobee, Pahokee's down 441 from there, and it's a nice drive. I'm planning to get back there eventually
  • Pinellas County
  • Polk County - another one I'm planning on spending more time in
  • Taylor County - watch out, Perry's a bit of a speed trap, but not as bad as Waldo or Lawtey
  • Union County - close-ish to me, wanna get when I go back to Lake City

These are all up in the Panhandle. Wanna try getting these, but if anyone else can catch a few, it'd help. But since I'm the closest (relatively), we'll see:

  • Holmes County
  • Jackson County
  • Martin County
  • Santa Rosa County
  • Walton County
  • Washington County

Zephyrhills[edit]

For your information, Zephyrhills is in Pasco County, not Hillsborough. And by the way, have you ever heard of the Zephyrhills Depot Museum?

http://www.zephyrhills.net/depotmuseum.html

It may not be on the National Register of Historic Places, but it's an old building, an old railroad station, and is being preserved by the City of Zephyrhills. ---- DanTD 05:45, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

May '07 roadtrips[edit]

Yes, I'm trying to plan in advance, what with all the festivals coming up. I've started to run into problems getting to some of the places due to areas being blocked off for festivals. Also want to get unobstructed views, not with hordes of people in front, doncha know. :) Anyway, tentatively:

  • May 5 weekend - Jacksonville - actually going because there's stuff going on. a living history event in the Springfield Historic District, and "Sail Jacksonville" (a bunch of boats, some historic, in the river/ocean/whatever)
  • May 12 weekend - Gainesville/Lake City-ish - going to the Windsor Zucchini Festival first, Windsor is just east of Gainesville, then going forth from there
  • May 19 weekend
    • Eustis/Mount Dora-ish - to finally finish that area off
    • Island Grove Blueberry Festival - in the other direction between Citra and Cross Creek
  • May 26 weekend (Memorial Day) - do I really want to go anywhere this weekend? Thinking about Fernandina Beach and/or St. Augustine, but St. Augustine will probably be really swarming with touristas, maybe just local stuff
    • hmm, maybe the rest of Volusia County might be wiser

Leon County[edit]

I'm always taking pictures in Leon County. I'm pretty sure I can get quite a few of the pictures on your list this weekend. CJ 13:11, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That would be terrif! I was toying with the idea of going there soon, 'cause it looks like it may not be so bad, smoke-and-forest-fire-wise. Plus I love the whole panhandle area. If you can get them, though, I can always re-strategize my travel plans. :) --Ebyabe 15:46, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Had a fairly good day yesterday. I have to get the pictures of the Brokaw-McDougall House reprinted thanks to the losers at the photo lab but I did get some shots of The Columns, First Presbyterian Church, Tallahassee, and stuff from Park Avenue. Feel free to yank anything you like from my flickr page. Everything is attribution-share alike. (You can also feel free to tell me my stuff is first-rate crapola.) CJ 18:19, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photo lab? What's that? *lol* I've gotten so spoiled with my digital camera I got as a belated Xmas prezzie. Before, I was using disposable cameras like they were going out of style. So what kinda camera do you have, anyhoo? :)
I really need to get up there sometime to visit friends in the area, and maybe see a Mickey Faust production. They're a wonderfully bizarre alternative theater group, whom I highly recommend. So, keep up with the pics, and hold your breath until the smoke clears. Which should be any month now??? Later! --Ebyabe 22:32, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like film. There's a quality to it that you just don't get with digital. I also like the fact that if my Mamiya 35mm takes a tumble it's not done for. And the digital rebel I want costs more than my monthly rent. :) Yea I know the Mickey Faust guys. Their place in Railroad Square is next to a yarn shop belonging to a friend of a friend. If you come try to do it on a first friday. That's when the whole district opens up.CJ 15:02, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

October 6th-ish trip[edit]

Making the annual trip to the one SF con a year I go to. It's the beginning of October this year. Leaving Friday, and planning to hit the sites in Western Pasco and northern Pinellas, then stuff in and around downtown Tampa. Also the state parks along the coast there. That's all fer now. ;) -Ebyabe 23:47, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Panhandle trip[edit]

Got a three day weekend coming up in March, so am taking the long planned trip to Pensacola and back. That is, from Quincy along I-10/US 90 to Pensacola, then down US 98 along the Gulf coast back. If there's anything up there that folks want pics of, I do take requests, and will see what I can fit in. :) -Ebyabe (talk) 00:39, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They may be off your route, but you could try a lot of the Amtrak, former Louisville & Nashville, and any Atlantic Coast Line, or Seaboard Air Line stations, if you run into them. Tallahassee (Amtrak station), Chipley (Amtrak station), Pensacola (Amtrak station), Louisville and Nashville Depot (Milton, Florida), Madison (Amtrak station), Lake City (Amtrak station), are some of the things I've been looking for images of. I also see that a lot of articles on NRHP sites in Gadsden County, are missing photos. Since you say you're going through Quincy, maybe you can take a few of those. ----DanTD (talk) 15:10, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I'm sort of planning to start from Quincy. The other Gadsden County ones may be on another trip. Especially the Joshua Davis House, the directions for which are annoyingly vague. Let's do the itinerary, as of now.
Day minus 1 - Perry, Chaires, get west of Tallahassee (probably Quincy, but maybe further west)
Day 1 - Quincy (again), Marianna (again), Chipley (again), Ponce de Leon, DeFuniak Springs, Crestview, Milton, Bagdad, Century (big maybe), Pensacola
Day 2 - as much in and around Pensacola as possible, go back east on US 98 as far as I can get
Day 3 - some of this may be on Day 2 - Fort Walton Beach, Panama City, Port St. Joe (again), Apalachicola (again), Carrabelle (again)

Time permitting, possibly Sopchoppy, Crawfordville, and St. Marks. Tallahassee will be a trip all it's own for another time. Also will be hitting as many state parks along the way as I can. There are about 25 along the entire route I'm planning. May even stay in one or two (cheaper than hotels).

What, me, ambitious? *lol* -Ebyabe (talk) 01:39, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Florida State Parks in the Northwest Region -Ebyabe (talk) 02:20, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola to the itinerary. Because with the slogan Where Dinosaurs and the Bible Meet!, how could I resist? :) -Ebyabe (talk) 00:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trip is completed, though itinerary somewhat changed from above. Got pics of about 80 sites (NRHPs and State Parks), 1212 pics. Now the sorting the wheat from the chaff, and the uploading! :) -Ebyabe (talk) 02:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
After the winnowing, there's still almost 900 good ones! I've been uploading them, and more than halfway done. -Ebyabe (talk) 00:22, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Volusia County[edit]

Thanks for the thanks and the link to your to do list. I'm on vacation here in Daytona Beach, so it's fun to have something constructive to do a little bit of. I got a few more pics today, and have begun posting them. Districts always stump me. Here in Daytona, some of them are big, and I'm clueless about what to take pics of in the district. In NY, you can access the original nrhp nomination form online, to see what is included in the district. You don't know of any such resource here in FL, do you? I did take pics of the houses in the pino parque district, but it says there are 14 houses, 11 contributing, so I'm not sure which to use. I can just pick a couple that look oldest and hope for the best, but that doesn't seem the best choice. Any ideas?Lvklock (talk) 00:54, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Enjoy the vacation! Yeah, that's more or less what I do with the districts. There's not info online like that for Florida that I've found. It's more or less gotten to the point, though, through sheer osmosis, that I can tell what's likely historic. I'm just happy you're getting some of the specific buildings. Like the Delos A. Blodgett House. I swear, I drove right by it on my last trip there and thought, "Gee, shame that's not on the NRHP." Doh! Keep up the good work, and continue in New York. I know there was a push to get List of National Historic Landmarks in New York to featured list. More pics wouldn't hurt. Oh, I see you're already working on that. :)
Btw, depending on your schedule, I can offer suggestions for side ventures away from Daytona Beach. Or not, as the case may be. :) -Ebyabe (talk) 01:47, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Suggestions are welcome...can't promise I'll get there, but I might! Thanks. Lvklock (talk) 18:49, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
