Article Feedback deployment

Hey EddieHugh; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:41, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Wonderful!

Fantastic work on Money Jungle, that's an excellent example of a jazz album article now! Gareth E Kegg (talk) 19:43, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. Still working on it though... EddieHugh (talk) 17:24, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
Wonderful work on Tommy Flanagan. Amazing accompanist, respected player in his own right, what a great man. Thank you. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:51, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks (again; Money Jungle is now GAN). Still working on this one, too. There'll be a lot more info to add, luckily (I've nearly given up on improving Bobby Timmons and Allen Eager for lack of sources). EddieHugh (talk) 23:35, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
That's the only reversion I've ever had that I approve of. Are you going for FA? Gareth E Kegg (talk) 21:01, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
No... I try to produce a page that gives a basic summary of a person's life/career. I think that having such a page online, readily available and properly sourced, is the least that these people deserve in the internet age, and hope that some readers will be drawn to their music. If there's enough info available, I nominate for GA, for independent verification that a certain standard has been reached and to stabilize the content. EddieHugh (talk) 12:04, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Good work expanding the Eddie Costa article. It's about time Costa got some more recognition. What a loss when he died so prematurely and tragically. His reputation should not have died with him. Talk about notable jazz artists who have been not so much underrated as almost completely forgotten! Keep up the good work. --Alan W (talk) 03:27, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Re: Art Farmer reverts

I had to look up the punctuation thing. I'm used to AP style, which places punctuation within the quotes. You are correct that Wikipedia does it differently. It looks terrible to have commas and periods hanging outside the quotation marks, but whatever.

I request that, before reverting anything else, please consider it as carefully as I did when I made the change in the first place. This sentence, for instance:

"Farmer's determination explore new forms of expression continued throughout his life."

was changed to

"His determination to keep exploring forms of expression continued throughout his life: "

I used "Farmer's" in the first place because readers will understand "his" to refer to the last person named. In this case, that was not Farmer, so Farmer must be named to avoid confusion. Also, the use of phrases like "to keep exploring" or "began to explore" is unnecessarily wordy when "explore" fits the same purpose. Dementia13 (talk) 19:37, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. I agree with (or at least do not object to) most of your changes, even though the article has a GA reviewer after three months, so waiting for that might have been better. For your example... "to keep exploring" differs from "to explore", given the time referent; it is also the main point of that part: the exploration was continuing even when he was near death. To me, my version stresses that, alongside the "throughout his life".

I used revert only as a short-hand for one part. Although I appreciate a lot of what you did, and have left most of it, I have also reverted some bits and made further changes, mainly to aid flow (not something that everyone will agree on - I often put time markers at the start of sentences where I see that as the main focus in a narrative; I'd guess that you prefer to put the person's name first) and to hold together information from one source (hence the use of semi-colons and colons; you prefer short sentences, it seems). It's interesting to get different perspectives. EddieHugh (talk) 20:15, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
For a great GA review of Hammond organ, primarily focused on the readers' interests. Too many GA reviews check typos or cite tag formatting - this is a welcome change. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:55, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Genre question

Hi. Appreciate your comments at the FAC page. Since another editor has questioned the clarity of a particular quote, I've brought it up at this article's talk page. Would you mind lending your two cents? Dan56 (talk) 06:47, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm not usually one for categorising, Dan56, but realise that some people are keen to get verifiable etc. categories listed. My direct answer to your Q on that page is that those who think of the album as folk-rock will find that the NYT quote supports their position, and those who don't, won't. As this answer doesn't help with the discussion, I've kept it just to this page. EddieHugh (talk) 15:50, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Your request for rollback

Hi EddieHugh/Archive 2012–13. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! —Tom Morris (talk) 15:03, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you! ... and a challenge

The Good Article Barnstar
For your contributions to bring Mal Waldron to Good Article status. Your impressive music articles are always appreciated--keep up the good work! -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:17, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
As a side note, you seem to know your jazz, and you're doing a great job with these GAs--have you ever thought about trying to get the jazz article itself to GA, either by yourself or with collaborators? It looks like it'd easily net everyone involved a Million Award. My own knowledge of jazz goes no further than Ken Burns' TV documentary and setting up a Pandora station, but I'd be glad to pitch in with any proofreading or technical aspects. -- Khazar2 (talk) 16:27, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
I'll see. I've edited jazz a lot already, mostly cutting irrelevance and repetition, but there's a long way to go. I might look through some books that provide an overview and see what topics come up in them and how they are balanced in terms of length/detail. Thanks for the offer. EddieHugh (talk) 18:13, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
Consulting some summary-level sources for weight sounds like a good approach. The challenge there will definitely be condensing and organizing more than adding. Luckily, the kind of editors who add five paragraphs on "Expatriate Hungarian post-bop piano jazz" usually don't stick around afterward to battle it out. I'm doing something similar at the moment with United Nations, which seems to have been a dumping ground for random text for a few years now without any thought to the article as a whole... the sad fate of too many of our big topics.
Anyway, happy editing, whatever you choose to take on next! -- Khazar2 (talk) 18:29, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

"Home" FAN comments

I have corrected the issues that you saw in the "Home" article. Thank you for the catch! Are there any more issues that you have spotted?--Gen. Quon (Talk) 20:11, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

As I mentioned on the page, that's the only thing I really looked at. I sometimes glance through a nominated article; occasionally I get more involved, but that's generally only when I oppose or quickly see how I think it could be better. You've clearly addressed what I raised, so that's fine. EddieHugh (talk) 22:34, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

Renomination alert

Hi. An article you previously commented at its first FAC has been renominated, and it has been recommended that previous reviewers be alerted about its second FAC. Dan56 (talk) 03:41, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

I looked in too late and now see that it's on its third. The system is getting in the way a bit, perhaps. Let me know when the suggested edits situation stabilizes and I'll probably be happy to support, as I did earlier. EddieHugh (talk) 14:34, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
