FA articles

Hi Ed. I hope you don't feel too down about recent events on here. That RFA nomination which I only saw after it was closed was not what you needed. Sorry to see all that monkey business. Remember that the more productive or passionate the editor in content, the less likely they will receive support. As for having to apologise to that editor for trying to take the article to FA, this is absolute rubbish. Creating and developing an article to a high standard is nothing to feel bad about however it is done. There are however some issues which affect the promotion of some of the articles to FA. The Paul article was clearly not ready for an FA nomination which is why I had to comment, even though I think very highly of your work as a wikipedian. I know you are very keen to get some FAs under your belt, but I think with the majority of African articles you do extremely well developing them to GA let alone FA. In the future I;d hope you have learned from recent events to be more cautious with FAs and not to nominate them unless you feel certain (and others) that it stands a great chance of passing. Now I genuinely thought the 1964 coup article was excellent and in other circunstances feel sure it would have passed eventually. All I can say is keep up the good work and see if you can devleop some more African articles to GA which is more than pleasing trust me. Hi there, I just thought I'd drop you a note in reply to your question elsewhere about why the Paul Gondjout FAC was closed. I can't speak for the FAC delegate of course, but having read the FAC page, it seems obvious that the article wasn't quite ready, and along with Blofeld above, I concur with the close. While I believe you would have worked hard to resolve the issues that were raised, I think in this case there were probably too many to warrant keeping it open while the all improvements were made. FAC probably shouldn't be the place for substantial article-(re)building anyway. I suggest a peer review before resubmission. That way, you can keep it open as long as the process takes, and invite members of various Wikiprojects to throw in their $0.02 at their leisure. I know, and I know just how easily it could be done too once it has been coded. I have asked Kotbot but he is very busy with Poland at present. I;ve even suggested to Fritz that he uses the bot to add all the missing infobox communes from French wikipedia to build the faith of the community that his bot is out to improve wikipedia, but something tells me he would state that "my bot isn't authorised to do that", and once again we'd be where we started off... I created that remaining GEOBOT list page anyway for the remaining articles, whether it is done by bot or manually. Tomorrow I'll try to dab as many as I can. Either/or Fallacy

Greetings,

I take exception with the either/or idea that if a person or topic does not merit an individual article, then they do not merit inclusion in Wikipedia. As an example of a merger-article for mini-bios that don't stand alone, but individually make an article, consider this one:

If we can do this for fictional TV characters, why not real people? Let's cut the fallacy that a reader would only want to read a novel or just a title of a book. There are novellas and short stories...formats of varying length. Likewise, a paragraph or two may be warranted for an individual supercentenarian even if the case does not achieve a long, individual article-length, as with Henry Allingham. The real issue here is to balance inclusion vs. deletion. Often, individual cases are best judged individually. No one objected to the deletion of Charlotte Gibson's mini-bio (but she was not the oldest person in the UK), while interest exists for some of those remaining--many of them, in fact. If, over time, a case loses significance, it can be deleted.

Consider "tallest buildings." In the World Almanac, in 1975 they listed all buildings in the U.S. 250 feet or higher. In the early 1980s the limit was 300 feet, then 350 feet in the 1990s and now 400 feet (500 for NY and Chicago). An individual building that may have been 266 feet tall in 1975 may have been significant then, but over time, its significance waned as more and more buildings taller than it were built. It was thus deleted. Likewise, we could establish a limit: perhaps a limit of 20% of cases with a bio, or 15%, or 15 total, or whatever. But a total carte blanche removal really does not reflect Wikipedia's pluralist approach, which suggests that multiple major viewpoints should be covered. In one approach, the statistical, inclusion of all cases is necessary for a mathematical calculation (however, that could be summed up in a table, such as:

France had 90 persons 110+, 45 111+, 20 112+, 8 113+, etc. Then a statistical pyramid could be made, with annual mortality data (death rate at 110=55%?).

The second approach, which I call "human interest" or newspaper story, is a desire for us to connect with the past. Rebecca Hewison's 1994 obituary stated that "last living link with 1881 is lost." In that context, her death was significant as a link to the past. More than that, however, we also see attempts to define just what lifestyle or life-strategies a super-c employed that enabled them to live to 114 or whatever. Or, they may have been a war veteran. In truth, the purpose of individual articles is twofold: to allow individual focus, and to shorten long articles by dividing them up into (tangential) sections. However, in some cases an individual article may not be warranted due to length not being a problem, and in others cases may exist better in context, rather than as individual, separate articles. Going back to "Minor Buffy characters" again, each mini-bio is in context of the show, and so a merged list makes sense.

Finally, I consider it a fault of Wikipedia to sometimes treat "list" articles as a directory, which Wikipedia is not. The list should not be a phone book; it should have context. Ryoung122

Just a quick tip: for any reading through foreign-language sources , I use freetranslation.com, I find it a much more competent translator than Google, which I find sometimes misconstrues text. Cheers, EJF (talk) 20:12, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Basically, my reason for adding the tag was that while the citations were done correctly, the wording was still taken pretty much word for word. Since it was a PD source this is okay, but I'd still prefer a rewrite. Wizardman 21:10, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
EOW: The nomination was removed from the Next Update before it was transferred to the Main Page, as discussed here. It was not however removed from the credits, which may be why you got the template message above even though the article did not appear at DYK. As mentioned in the discussion linked in the first sentence of this message, and as discussed elsewhere on that page:
  • Articles which are copied from other sources, even though in the public domain, do not qualify for DYK;
  • Articles which are paraphrases of other work, with similar language and structure, raise copyright issues, and should not be nominated and in fact should not be created unless there is no liklihood of a copyright violation (regardless of whether the original author seeks to enforce copyright); and
  • Translated articles, whether by machine or by an interpreter, are derivative and can also violate copyright.

Hi Editorofthewiki. First off, congratulations for all of your hard work. However, I also notice that some of your GA noms contain numerous cut & paste sentences which are not attributed as quotations. Please be aware: if you use another author's words, you must attribute them. This is formally done by using quotation marks. If the quote is more than a few words, then the author should be mentioned by name in the text (Lazulilasher refers to the earthquake as, "sentence"). Otherwise, we misrepresent the words as Wikipedia's.

I am going to reply to you here, to keep the discussion in one place.

First, I only looked at one GA: Mary Meader. The article references the New York Times. The New York Times writes:

  1. "...South America and Africa that had never been captured on film from the air.." and the article says: South America and Africa that had never been captured on film from the air
  2. The NYT says: "When they were planning their trip, soon after their marriage the next year, many parts of the world had still not been photographed from above" and our article says, While planning the trip, many parts of the world had not been photographed from above
  3. NYT: "The American Geographical Society was encouraging photographic flights to build an archive of aerial view"; Wikipedia: the American Geographical Society encouraged photographic flights to build an archive of aerial views.
  4. NYT: "was a language major at Smith College, specializing in French and Spanish, but dropped out to marry Richard Upjohn Light, a neurosurgeon and former military pilot who was her first cousin." versus the article: was a language major at Smith College, specializing in French and Spanish, though she dropped out to marry Dr. Richard Upjohn Light, a neurosurgeon and her first cousin.
  5. NYT: "The Lights took off first in September 1937 from Kalamazoo in a Bellanca monoplane, its cabin lacking heat and pressurization." the article: The two Lights took off out of Kalamazoo in September 1937 in a Bellanca monoplane, whose cabin lacked heat and pressurization.
  6. NYT: "ice dome and crater of Mount Kilimanjaro and the serrated glaciated pinnacles of Mount Kenya", vs. ice dome and crater of Mount Kilimanjaro and the glaciated pinnacles of Mount Kenya.
  7. NYT: "they would rise at 4 a.m. and fly until 11 a.m, after which they would visit the farms, mines, and native settlements that would be photographed the next day." vs. "they would arise at 4 a.m. and fly until 11 a.m. After lunch, they visited the farms, mines and native settlements that would be photographed the next day."

I don't have time now to go through the whole article. Basically, these are direct quotations from the New York Times, a copyrighted publication. To use a direct quotation, we do something like this: John Holmes of the New York Times said, "blah blah blah" [1]. We strive to leave the quotation as unchanged as possible, however, if change is required it is in "[]". I would advise reading our policies on Non free content and the quotation guidelines.

Please note, encyclopedia entires are generally not comprised of a long collection of quotations. From your work, I am confident you will be able to find your own words to describe these events.

Bots and earthquakes

Ed I know about the infoboxes but I'm really trying hard to get somebody to see how simple it is and run a bot for it, most of the tedious tasks we do could be saved simply by a bot leaving us to purely focus on writing. Anyway I've proposed the creation of earthquake stubs probably by decade at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2008/October. Please offer your thoughts. 1964 Gabon coup d'état

EotW, why don't you withdraw this nom? The article just failed an A-class review; it's probably not yet ready for an FAC. In all honesty, unless you find someone with an excellent knowledge of French, it will never be. That's OK! You still made the article better. Being a FA does not make the article better--it's just an indicator that that article is amongst Wikipedia's best. Some articles will never be FAs. That's ok, too. Hey, I read your message. You seem angry. I am sorry if my words are harsh, but I am confused. You are cutting & pasting pages from the Library of Congress and putting them through DYK, you have an article (above) that contained cutting & pasting from the NY Times, and now you're nominating an article that has serious verifiability issues. Why? Just because an article goes through FAC successfully doesn't make it a better article. Heck: I've been working on the Louvre article for 11 months, and the thing is still not ready. But, I am happy that I improved that article. To be honest, I don't know if I'll ever be able to get Louvre up to FA standards. But, that's OK, I still made the article better. Ed, I thought we agreed it was best to move on and let it rest?? I've spoken to you many times in good faith, believing my time was well spent about in explaining why it isn't a good idea to keep on reproposing when the same issue stands. Why have you gone back to the 1964 coup and renominated again? However good the article is, people will oppose it because of the way it has been translated. Unless somebody (like our language teacher Jb murray) proof reads it to ensure it is completely correct it doesn't stand a chance. As I've said before you shouldn't be in a rush to take articles to FA and to keep on reproposing article within a very short time frame, but this is something it seems you are going to have to learn the hard way. I agree completely with Lazulilasher's sentiments above that you are putting too much weight on "trophies". Just because an article has an FA badge on it doesn't essentially mean it is a wonderful article to read. I;ve read many articles considered "B class" articles (Argentina etc) which to me are excellent, thorough and interesting articles but are not even GA because every sentence doesn't have a citation or it has minor MOS trivialities, and numerous FAs which in my eyes are less rich in content. Ultimately we all want to see every article perfected in terms of referencing, tone and content to be regarded as an "FA" but it isn't some kind of game to see who can notch up the most FAs, GAs or DYKs either. You're doing very well indeed on wikipedia and it is a pleasure to have you editing on here, but in all honesty mate I think you should ease off the gas in terms of the frequency of your nominations. I know Ed, I agree with you, and I know its only because you are trying your damnest to improve wikipedia and the articles so good on you!! I am personally satisfied with the 1964 coup article (except any minor mistranslations) and think given the circumstances is an excellent and concise article that gives me all I want to know about the subject, but I knew that because of the way it was written it wasn't going to pass which is a shame because it is a very good article. I didn't mean to discourage you at all from writing articles to "formal" FA quality I absolutely encourage it, rather, I was referring to the frequency of your nominations which is quite unusual. AN example of beauty or outstanding culture often failing FAs at the expanse of sometimes bland content is often quite clear at FA pictures. This is one of the candidates and probably will get some support but if I proposed the above photograph for a featured picture it would probably be rejected for not being clearer. Personally I know which image I would rather look at and it id the same with many articles. I;d much rather read and visit a beautiful article which is highly cultured with extraordinary content but may not be technically perfect than a bland article with uninspiring subject matter that is perfectly referenced and cited. I think Greenland's wonderful. My sister was going to go there for Christmas but decided to go to Togo and Benin instead! I love those colorful lego looking Nordic houses. They have like triple glazed windows don't they up there. Have a look at Aasiaat harbor I just found. Reindeer hunting in Greenland just shows how amazing this site is becoming, its really getting better every day. Every now and again I check up on articles I've worked on/started in the past and its great to see what is happening with them.

Hate war? I luvs you man, peace love and happiness man. Not in the least bit angered, but I thought you might have understood the extent of the task and that these articles make up administrative areas of the country and therefore need to be started. I don't think you realise how receptive other editors can be to criticism, however light in the community. The other day somebody else took a swipe at a Nepal article I started and as a result was put off for a few days from bothering to start any more until I got my enthusiasm back for it. Getting articles up and running in such a way with might I say a reference and proper documentation. e.g infobox, template categories etc consistently tends to not be done as well by others on wikipedia so we end up with uneveness as a result. I'd rather the task was done consistently and initially with less content rather than one or two being fully developed and the rest missing or sub standard. By setting them it provides a platform to build upon later, no doubt it will soon enough but it takes years to build a decent encyclopedia as we now 8 years down the line and still most of the places in Nepal were not covered Blofeld of SPECTRE (talk) 21:36, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Excellent. It is such a shame that countries like Liberia and Benin and, well 99% of Africa is forgotten about on here. I mean how often can you say there is a DYK or new articles on recent changes about Benin, Guinea, Cameroon or Liberia. The DYK on Liberia today is one in a million! I mean you'd think Nigeria or Kenya but even these countries have lame coverage in comparison given their size. The only way its going to work is if these countries get onto the web as three or four of us can't be responsible for a whole continent. Yes the best thing with Nepal will be to completely dab that bot page and but them into the nav boxes and then in the next week just drill through them all. They don't take very long to start once the dabbing and that has been sorted and we have already made great progress. Yes I'd like to get some of my long running projects finally completed as it has been piling up, French commune infboxes too if Fritz will help the cause. Evidence that the content behind the mainspace is increasing at the expense of the encyclopedia. When I started on wikipedia we had just passed the 1 million mark and had 7 million pages. We now have 2.6 million articles but we now have a whopping 15 million pages in total. Just think what would happen if some of these people decideded to create a page on an article instead, we'd probably have around 7 million articles by now. Strictly speaking, there's the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 (terrible article) and the more modern coups like the 2008 Mauritanian coup d'état (also terrible for reading like a series of news bulletins rather than a coherent set of events).
