Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Editorross. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Amirah Kassem, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Longhair\talk 20:31, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Editorross. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Amirah Kassem, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Editorross. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Editorross|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Longhair\talk 20:41, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Longhair. I have not and will not receive any compensation direct or indirect from editing this page. Amirah is neither my client nor employer. I do have a pre-existing relationship to Amirah and will disclose said relationship on my user page. Further, the edits made were neutral and do not contain a viewpoint. Updates only included press, works and other important events for Amirah Kassem since 2019 that have been published in the media. For example, she had published 5 books that were not on her Wiki. Her page should be updated to list her as an author as well as information about the books.

Hello and thank you for your response. The personal life section of the article mentions "Kassem currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband and business partner, Ross", and your choice of username indicates your name as possibly being Ross. Your excessive usage of external links used to promote the published works leads me to believe your primary focus on editing this article is promotional editing. As Ross is mentioned as being a business partner, that's a very clear conflict of interest with the subject of this article. -- Longhair\talk 20:59, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
May I ask, what is the nature of your pre-existing relationship with the article subject, and are you or are you not her husband and business partner? -- Longhair\talk 21:06, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Longhair. Yes I am her husband and business partner, but this article is not about our business. The majority of the activity I wrote about does not involve our business. In fact, I only added that an additional shop was opened in August 2020 in Beverly hills in the section for which I have a financial interest. This has no opinion, it's just a fact that we opened another store and the rest was already contained in the article.
How would you like to proceed? I would like to update Amirah's wiki so that it reflects her current biography and body of work. I wrote the update since the main article has not updated the events of Amirah for quite some time. And I did my best to have a neutral viewpoint by not expressing any opinions and only using independent, primary sources such as IMDB, Amazon, etc. After reviewing all of Wikipedia's articles on COIs it looks like I cannot edit this page, but need someone else to edit it for me and I can submit my edits. Would you edit this page and review the edits submitted?

The article is about the business when external links are added to Amazon online shopping for cooking books. As an editor with a direct financial conflict of interest, please do not edit the article directly. You may request edits to the article by following the information at the page Wikipedia:Edit requests. Please also update the COI notice on your userpage to correct the circumstances thanks, being that you are a paid editor who benefits directly from your association with the article subject. You may be blocked from editing if you continue to edit this article directly thanks. -- Longhair\talk 19:40, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
