We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

Please don't removed "citation needed" tags from challenged text unless you replace them with a cited reference. It the tags are removed and no ref is provided then the text gets removed as well.
