Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Ehuong, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

It would be much easier to expand the canine reproduction article, and possibly add a section to the dog food article than it would be to create an article specifically about "gestation and lactation diets for dogs". To be honest, I think that's too narrow for a stand-alone article, though in the end, it depends on whether you can find enough content to write that article. Bear in mind that any article you create needs to meet Wikipedia's notability standards, needs to be based on high-quality reliable sources, and it needs to document what's out there in the literature - it can't give advice or draw novel conclusions. Where do you intend to add this? To the canine reproduction article as I mentioned before? Please let me know. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:49, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Remember that section headers shouldn't be capitalized. Remember that you need to update the lead section to reflect the changes you made to the article. And don't forget that the overall article needs to remain balanced.

You need to be careful about tone. Wikipedia articles don't give advice - they describe what reliable sources say about a topic.

When considering nutrition for the gestating/lactating bitch it is important to consider not only her needs and requirements but also those of her puppies and how nutrition for the bitch will impact them.

  • "When considering..." - you're speaking to your reader here, not describing facts
  • "...it is important..." - this in an opinion

You need to simply describe the most important elements. That's all.

A study conducted using 48 Beagle puppies fed either low, medium, or high amounts of DHA showed that puppies fed high amounts had improved visual, motor, and cognitive function.

You shouldn't be talking about the details of a research study. You can write about what secondary sources (review articles) and tertiary sources (textbooks) say about the findings of research studies. At the same time, you should be specific. What does "low, medium, or high amounts" mean? Does it mean that any amount of DHA has the same effect? Or does it mean that it has no effect?

Make sure that the information you're adding is specific to the topic. Take, for example, the section on gastrointestinal health

Dietary fibres, such as beet pulp, barley, and fructooligosaccharides are added to canine diets to help with the digestibility or fermentability of other dietary ingredients.[19] Beet pulp is a fibre source commonly used in dog diets that has an effective complement of viscous and non-viscous structural carbohydrates.[20] Viscous polysaccharides are those that are extensively fermented,[20] and the more fermentable the fibre, the higher the digestibility.[21] Over 16% of the fiber of beet pulp is viscous polysaccharides, which are responsible, in part, for the beneficial effects on glucose, fatty acid and bile acid metabolism.[20] Beet pulp is also high in hemicellulose, which is a non-viscous polysaccharide that has similar effects as a viscous polysaccharide.[20][22] When beet pulp is added, studies have shown that the frequency of defecation increases[20][22] and the retention time, or time of digestion, decreases.[20] Barley is also used as a dietary fibre in dog foods and is rich in fermentable and soluble fibres. [23] Barley contains high levels of β-glucans,[23] which are water-soluble fibers that are able to form highly viscous solutions.[19] When using barley in a diet, it is important to note that thermal treatment, such as extrusion, decreases the solubility of β-glucans.[19] Fructooligosaccharides are important as a substrate, or place of attachment for many good bacteria.[24] These include both prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are foodstuffs that either suppress or enhance replication of specific colonic bacteria that are important for the host, whereas probiotics are bacteria or yeast that are fed to alter colonic bacterial populations.[24] In short, to attain optimum health, a fibre source should be moderately fermentable for the production of short-chain fatty acids with a non-fermentable component to provide bulk

Nothing in there appears to be specific to canine reproduction. If it's true for all dogs, it doesn't belong on this page. Add this to another page (diet? dog food?) and link to it from here. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:33, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
