Mocavo[edit]

Hi Jason, I notice you have been adding a lot of citations into articles that refer to digitised books on the Mocavo website, which is a family history site. Thanks for that. Can you just explain about that a bit? For example, why are there digitised books on a family history website? Do you have any connection with the website? Hi AWhiteC, thanks for your comment and your contributions to Wikipedia as well. Indeed I work at Mocavo. While Mocavo is a family history site, one of its main goals is to bring the world's historical content online for free; in contrast to other sites, when the content goes live on Mocavo, it stays free forever (most other sites charge you for access to this content). Mocavo acquires content in many ways including from other digital sources but its members also contribute a lot of content/books/photos that Mocavo digitizes. Collecting all of this historical content in one place allows people to trace their genealogy more effectively.

Overall, I've been interested in the value of the Wikipedia project for years but couldn't figure out a 'way in' to start contributing. But when I realized that some of the content on Mocavo could help provide valid references in wiki articles, I thought that was a good way to get started. I add references for subjects that I find interesting or articles/stubs that are 'missing' references. That also gives me an incentive to check those pages on my Watchlist - to watch out for vandalism and other errors/changes, etc; I even found & reverted a bad edit last night! I also spent 3 years in Brazil and learned Portuguese while I was down there; so I've found that I can help to translate articles from Portuguese into English as another way to contribute to the Wikipedia community. In all, I know I'm connected to Mocavo, but I really try to use a filter of 'is this making Wikipedia better?' for any edit. I'll also keep reading up on all the Wikipedia guidelines to make sure my edits are policy compliant (and I make less errors when inserting the technical tags!) I do hope to continue being able to contribute on those types of subjects as I find the process of editing + watching a page to be interesting and gratifying!
