Coronavirus move discussion

Hello Ergo Sum! I do agree with you that "Coronavirus pandemic" would be a good name to the page 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic page. However, the current proposal is to move to "COVID-19 pandemic". I'm afraid your comment will too easily be counted as a "support" to the current proposal. Since you seem to oppose that proposal, I'm very tempted to edit your comment to start with "Oppose" instead of "support". However, that might be illegal... St.nerol (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Blocking IP's indefinitely

Why are you blocking IP addresses indefinitely? That's almost never called for. Sro23 (talk) 02:21, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

@Sro23: My general disposition is to block for the shortest amount of time that I think will resolve the issue. In this case, I have noticed a pattern in which multiple IP addresses are engaging in the same repeated vandalism over a long period of time (weeks) on multiple articles. As a result, I have opened a sockpuppet investigation. Given these circumstances, I believe an indefinite block is warranted pending the outcome of the investigation. I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to proxy detection, but they appear to be Webhosts or open proxies, so they probably should remain blocked for a while, but it's likely that at some point in the future they will no longer be open proxies. So as long as you do unblock them eventually I guess I don't have a problem with that. BTW, the SPI you're looking for is Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CGSFH.   • Hmm, wanted to drop a note about this. IPs should typically not be indefinitely soft-blocked, a medium-duration hardblock makes more sense. The only way IPs are retained for a long-time is when organizations (ISPs/institutions/companies) directly lease it for an indefinite period and even then, it will show up as attached to that organization - this vandalism is using closed proxies which means that the proxy might be used genuinely at a certain point of time or it might cease to be a proxy, making indefinite bans pointless. --qedk (t 愛 c) 16:09, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the heads up. I assumed that the sockmaster was using a VPN to bounce around different IPs and that those IP addresses would have to be unblocked at some point. I just implemented an indefinite block as a quick fix to a time-sensitive problem. I intend to unblock them. Ergo Sum 22:06, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Ergo Sum Okay then, I'll get it done within the next week. I was referring to the Lopez one, but it's also useful to know that the Goff one has a lifespan of about a month. Do you know how many reviews it needs for the FAC coordinators to approve it? May 2020

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

Thank you today for Samuel Mulledy, "about a Catholic priest who had a less-than-stellar track record as a Jesuit. He became the president of Georgetown University, but was relieved after just a few months and then was booted from the Jesuit order. He drifted around and then was re-admitted on his death bed."! - I am in the process of collecting hymns for Pentecost, many relying on Veni Creator Spiritus, and the question came up if that hymn needs quotation marks. Nunc dimittis doesn't. What do you think? - I was surprised how few English hymns have an article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:55, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

I really don't know; my instinct would be to place it in quotes, since I can't think of a reason why the English should not be in quotes when other languages are, but I don't have a good justification beyond that. I really don't where the line is between a one-word term such as Requiem and Magnificat, two words Nunc dimittis, and three words. I'd understand "Veni creator spiritus", but the capitals English uses clearly mark it as not the normal prose. - In the TFA, I believe that most people would know what Catholic means, but Priesthood in the Catholic Church is really something special ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:02, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Editing news 2020 #3

On 16 March 2020, the 50 millionth edit was made using the visual editor on desktop.

Seven years ago this week, the Editing team made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

  • The 50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop was made this year. More than 10 million edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
  • More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
  • Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
  • The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has been increasing every year.
  • Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.
  • On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor.
  • In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

Vatican ecclesiastical court

Hi Ergo Sum

Curious why you've reinstated a term which simply doesn't appear in the sources or in any of the articles (including the body of the article in question)... Perhaps by some interpretations the Vatican uses "ecclesiastical courts", but as far as I can tell they're not generally called that, and we shouldn't introduce some concept in the lead which is not then backed up or substantiated in the body. Google gives a total of 14 non-Wikipedia hits. I think my change was definitely more clear and more true to what the source says, and was an improvement to the article. Hi Amakuru, I don't consider it a "term," but just a phrase made up of two adjectives and a noun. All of Catholic canon law is administered by ecclesiastical courts. Indeed, by definition, any court that is run by a church and decides questions pertaining to religion is an ecclesiastical court (as opposed to a civil court). The Vatican part just describes where the church was located (and also suggests that the case was likely decided from an appellate posture). It would less accurate to simply say a Vatican court or that the case was heard by the Vatican since the Vatican does have non-canon law courts (e.g. that handle petty crime inside Vatican City) and because the Vatican is a county; countries don't hear cases, but their courts do. I really don't see how the phrase "Vatican ecclesiastical court" is inaccurate at all. It was a lawsuit, heard by an ecclesiastical court, in the Vatican. Ergo Sum 15:38, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Reply tool

The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over 7,400 comments with the tool.

The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.

  • More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
  • Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
  • Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. One said, أعتقد أن الأداة تقدم فائدة ملحوظة؛ فهي تختصر الوقت لتقديم رد بدلًا من التنقل بالفأرة إلى وصلة تعديل القسم أو الصفحة، التي تكون بعيدة عن التعليق الأخير في الغالب، ويصل المساهم لصندوق التعديل بسرعة باستخدام الأداة. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF).

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to customize the edit summary. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to set its own preferred symbol for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can define a preferred signature prefix in the page MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

New requirements for user signatures

  • The new requirements for custom user signatures began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
  • Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected temporarily. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can check your signature and see lists of active editors whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please read the help page.

I would suggest trying to refine it into a specific difference(s) and say current vs proposed or similar. As posed I think that RfC was going to fail and likely piss off some people.
