Hello!
Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.
- Pick an image name.
- When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.
- Source the image.
- On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.
- Provide copyright and license information.
- This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.
- If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.
- If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.
- Describe the image.
- To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

Magazine covers
[edit]Please notice that they have to be low-resolution images of magazine covers. feydey 18:08, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Covers
[edit]Please upload low-resolution images of these. Try to search the web for images instead of scanning them (the scanned images of your's are huge, 2,000,000 bytes). Questions? NB. Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. feydey 21:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- I suggest You get to know Wikipedia by adding text and reading how things work, later, when You have more experience, then upload images etc. feydey 21:08, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- To remove those images that You uploaded quickly, add {{db-author}} to the images' pages. feydey 16:04, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Fair use
[edit]You have not yet provided a detailed fair-use rationale for your recently uploaded image, Image:Scarlettj_vogue0405.jpg. Please do so before reincorporating it into any articles. --Yamla 16:31, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Image problems
[edit]A number of your uploaded images have been deleted, though not by me. Is there anything I can do to help you understand why this is happening? We really do welcome your contributions, it's just that your images have a couple of problems which seem minor but which may cause Wikipedia some problems in the future. If there's anything I can do to help, please respond here or on my talk page. --Yamla 16:41, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
- You said: "Hi, it's me again. I just want to ask if I put the fair use rationale for my image on this page /http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Scarlettj_vogue0405.jpg/ in the right place because I haven't seen the fair use rationale in other users' image profiles. Thanks in advance."
- Well, the problem with this particular image is that it is not appropriate to use simply to illustrate the person. It can only be used to illustrate the publication of the magazine. In this particular case, it would be reasonable to use this in the Scarlett Johansson article if there's discussion about that particular Vogue magazine. You'd probably get by if you noted that Ms. Johansson has modelled for a number of magazines, appearing on the front cover of many including Vogue. This is a tricky matter made harder because the use of another magazine cover in the Naomi Campell article is almost certainly not fair-use. --Yamla 18:51, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Also, note that it is customary to put the fair-use justification on the image page itself, as you have done, and add comments to the article itself noting that the fair-use justification is on the image page. You can use HTML comment tags to do this. <!-- This is a comment --> Alternatively, you can note on the image that fair-use rationales are provided in the article pages and then add the rationales to each article. This is more customary if you are going to use the image on multiple pages. --Yamla 18:57, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- I reckon that it would be better if I didn't upload anything to the Scarlett Johansson article, that cover isn't so important . I think I will start doing something else instead. Anyway, thanks for your help and patience. Good luck, ErikaG 19:35, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I hope we haven't scared you off. Fair-use and copyright is a bitch, particularly for something like Wikipedia. Personally, I stay away from uploading pictures as a general rule. I really do hope you stick around and contribute to the Wikipedia in other ways if you decide not to bother with pictures. This place can be a lot of fun so long as you don't take things too seriously. --Yamla 19:40, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Re: Art
[edit]See Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#Public_domain_art for usable tags. Remember to check commons.wikimedia.org if an image already exists and source the images. feydey 14:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Orphaned fair use image (Image:Tessofthe.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Tessofthe.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles cover
[edit]Hi, I recently replaced your uploaded cover image with an image of the original cover of the book per User:Chick Bowen/Bad book covers. A recent cover like yours technically would not be acceptable under the "replaceable" clause of our fair use policy, since the books' original covers, title pages, etc. would be free. Thanks, and I was just letting you know that I did this. QueenStupid 02:49, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:The tell-tale heart.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:The tell-tale heart.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 08:34, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:Orban_viktor.ogg
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:Orban_viktor.ogg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Jusjih 04:38, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
