Mosaic Inscription

Dear Eupator, thanks a lot for your swift response. Well the inscription now becomes pretty clear. The first part indeed reads ΜΗΔΕΝ ΛΑΒΟΝΤΕΣ ΗΡΓΑΣΑΜΕΘΑ ("receiving nothing we toiled/laboured/worked" or more simply "we worked for free"). Beneath it you can see two figures and two names written beside them. ΩΚΕΑΝΟΣ (transliterated: OKEANOS meaning "Ocean") and ΘΑΛΑΣΑ, (transliterated THALASA meaning "Sea" - although, as it is common is such late inscriptions, the word is mispelled-the correct form would be ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑ=THALASSA with a double s). The two human figures are actually personifications of the ocean and the sea and the mosaic -if I am not mistaken- should probably date from the late 3rd or 4th century AD. Such mythological representations are actually quite common in the late greco-roman mosaics. They usually depict rivers, mountains even abstract notions such as ΑΙΩΝ (time or eternity), ΑΦΘΟΝΙΑ (abundance)etc. The objects protruding from the heads of the figures should have been crab-grips and wings as you can see in an earlier example from Zeugma here http://www.ubiquityinternational.com/newsimages/oceanus_tethys_mosaic.jpg, where Tethys (the mythological sister of the Ocean) instead of THALASSA = Sea is represented. These attributes would suffice for the identification by the ancient viewer. Of course the Garni mosaic is a later adaptation (maby 2 centuries later) of the same theme. Details have been largely schematized to the point of loosing their original meaning thereby making identification difficult and the explanatory inscriptions necessary (a fact also compatible with the probable late date of the Garni example). The first part of the text has probably to do with the fact that the artists constructed the mosaic without receiving any fee. Similar inscriptions come from mosaics in early christian Basilicas and were intended as a sort of dedication by faithful ΜΟΥΣΕΙΑΡΙΟI artists making the mosaics. In this case I am a bit puzzled because such pagan representations of the Ocean and the Sea would hardly be fitting to a christian establishment... but who knows. Did you find any of that useful? Unfortunately I haven't managed to trace anything published but I am going to ask a friend who is specializing in epigraphy. Would you by any chance know who has conducted the excavations at Garni. This might help because then I can probably trace some relevant bibliography. Hello Eupator I don't think that you know me, so I'll introduce myself: I'm one of the few members of the Armenian project on fr, though I'm not Armenian (I'm from Belgium and have no Armenian "roots"). I'm mainly interested in Armenian history but, due to the low number of people interested about writing articles about Armenia on fr, I sometime work on other Armenian-related articles. By default, I'm also in charge of the Armenian Portal on fr. I recently launched a monthly newsletter relating to the Armenian Projects, Des Nouvelles d'Arménie; the idea is about providing members with information on the three projects, like new articles, votes on FA, important progress, ... as well as entertaining the link between each of us. As I said, our number is not very high (13, actually). I was thus wondering whether opening ourselves to the other wiki Armenian projects would be a good idea. In such a case, the en one would be a first choice. I saw that you're the founder of the Portal. Also, whenever I have a look at an en Armenian-related article, I see your name. You definitely seem to be a very good candidate. So here is my question: would you agree to be interviewed for our newsletter? If you do, I think we have enough time to use your interview for the September issue. In case you don't, I would perfectly understand it. So, what do you think about it? 'Opponent'

I cannot wrap my head around why you regard the word 'opponent' used in a discussion as uncivil. If I am not mistaken, this is not the first time. In English, the word 'opponent' has multiple related meanings, not necessarily having to do with battlefields, and one of them is: "one that takes an opposite position (as in a debate, contest, or conflict)". Armenian cities, towns, and villages

What do you think of Zlerman's suggestion to make kaghak=town, gyugh=village, and large kaghak=city? It seems to be the best idea so far. Since the size of kaghakner varies so widely (>1000 to <100,000) it makes sense to use either "town" or "city" for them. Hi Eupator I recently expanded fr:Matenadaran; I hoped I could bring it to the GA level, but I know now that this is not realistic, mainly due to the lack of established sources... whatever. Genocide Denial article

I'm in two minds about how to approach this Philip Baird Shearer. At first I thought they were the actions of an newbie idiot, but now I think they might be well planned. However, well planned or not, I don't see them succeeding. Personally, I think he is a lone gunman type: no support, bee under his bonnet, and a lot of WP:OWN issues. His success here will depend on how much support he gets. I don't think the usual suspects will want to be involved in supporting him because they will know a lost cause when they see it. In the early 20th century, the Armenian quarter of Marsovan was called Arewordi; there was a cemetery outside the town called Arewordii grezman, and the Armenian owner of a nearby vineyard was named Arewordean, i. e., Arewordi-son (Letter from Mme. Maricʿa Metakʿsean, Ēpinay-sur-Seine, France, 4 July 1979, in response to an article by the author in Haratch, Paris, 1 July 1979). ". Note their remnants were culturally Armenian and culturally they adopted Armenian Christianity and etc., but their origin seems to be Iranic. I usually thought Iranian influences in the Caucasus can only bring the Caucasus and Iran/Iranian people closer, but usually it has been having the opposite effect for all three countries.  :( --Nepaheshgar (talk) 21:40, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Sicily became majoritarian latin speaking and RC Catholic between 1240 and 1300, possibly later then 1300 (1400-1500 the greeks became a negligible minority and the last speakers disappeared probably in the XVI century, the last basilian monks dismissed the last remnats of greek between 1700 and 1761 - in 1761 the monastery San Michele Arcangelo di Troina was rebuilt and reorganized as fully western and roman), when Frederick became the King the RCs were the dominant group but possibly not yet the majority, may be "dominant" could be more correct 2. Dear Eupator, would you consider reversing your edit that reversed your earlier edit that removed the link to the Azeri-language wikipedia. In other words , would you remove the link. As you may know, the problem of Wikipedia linking to propaganda websites has come up before (for the khachkar entry). I'm interested in seeing what happens when it is removed again. You might be able to help, I'd like you to come check this out. I want to include a map of the first republic of Armenia (from 1918-1920). From 1918 to 1919, Armenia and Azerbaijan were at war. Borders were not set. Therefore, it's difficult to have a map that's accurate. I made a comprehensive map that shows all the territory that Armenia had stable control over (Yerevan, Kars, Sevan and Gyumri). The rest of the territory that Armenia claimed is separated into two parts. Regions that were mostly under Armenian control, and regions mostly under Azerbaijani control. These are territories that both Armenia and Azerbaijan claimed, and warred over, and the borders often changed. This includes Zangezur, Nakhichevan, Karabakh. My map is sourced by a non-Armenian source, and it even uses contemporary maps of the time to prove it. A user named Neftchi continuously removes my map using the usual "Nakhchivan, Zangezur and Karabakh have always been Azerbaijani" rhetoric. But I have material to prove him wrong, therefore, I started a discussion on the article to argue about it. I presented all of my arguments, and he hasn't written a word to discuss with me. Instead, he just started an edit war with me, and when he realized I'm not giving up without an argument, he decided to put a map of Azerbaijan that includes ALL territories Azerbaijan claimed at the Paris Peace conference. That map is extremely inaccurate, as it completely ignores the territories Armenian militia controlled. Borders weren't recognized at the time, only the governments were, because Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan were all at war. Only proposals were made, and they were still being discussed when the Soviet Union conquered the Caucasus, and set the borders themselves. So I removed his map using the argument that it is biased, and that it ignores the Armenian side.

Please compare: I could have done like him and posted a map that includes all territories Armenia claimed, but that would have been biased. Instead, I posted a map that shows what each side controlled. At least my map doesn't assume that everything Armenia claimed actually belonged to Armenia. Tell me which one is more objective? And he says my map is not sourced. He clearly hasn't read the "Source" of my map. Plus he doesn't even take the time to discuss, he just imposes his views without a single word of argument. Something must be done here. I don't mind making an objective map of Azerbaijan as well. But it would be good if it wasn't ignorant people with a political agenda, but those with an interest in historical facts to make the final decisions on what maps should be used. Azerbaijan was a non-existent nation until the Soviet Union. Historically speaking, Armenians were the only nation that was sandwiched between the Greeks and the Persians. The Persians even had Armenian Generals, so did the Greeks and Romans. Going back on topic, during the Soviet Union Era there was a lot of corruption and that worked against the Armenians. The Azerbaijan history is fabricated, to say the least. The Azerbaijani people claim that they are descendants of Albanians, which is inaccurate--that region was Armenian and the Albanians were also Armenians (Armenians had more than 60 kingdoms stretching from the border with the Greeks and Persians). Though after the Turks invaded that region they did mix with the Armenians and then they continued their bloody conquest. The Turks raped, killed the men, kidnapped women and took orphans and that is a fact--there are millions of "Turks" who are being told that they are part Armenian, but sadly it is all kept hushed-up (this is why when the European Journals published a Genetics paper on that region noted the similarity between the Armenians, Turks, and Azerbaijan people. To recap: the Turks and Azerbaijanis( people who are mixed between the Turkish invaders who already mixed with the Persians before coming and mixing with the Armenians) both forcibly mixed with the Armenians who were already present there). Battle of Artaxata

It appears user:Հայկ Ափրիկյան has returned with supposed sources. Most either in Russian or Armenian. The two sources I could read do not state Armenian victory. European Americans

Hello,

Can you show me that source that California or any other official US governmental institution considers Armenians as European Americans? I'd sincerely like to see that. :-) Armenia lies furthermore geographically fully in Asia, unlike neighbouring Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan which all have some (small) soil geographically in Europe.

Eupator, sorry but I'm not gonna continue playing games. I left you a note here on the 19th of June, which is weeks ago, yet you didn't reply. Then, today, I left you another note with a reference, yet you didn't reply again. You suddenly got "out of your Wiki slumber" only when I reverted your edit. I don't think think anyone appreciates such seemingly feigned ignorance. You claim that Armenians are counted as Europeans in the US, yet you didn't post any reference or source (from a reliable origin of course) that confirms this. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Orontid dynasty

Can you restore Armenian dynasty on the top first sentence? Since 2006 ever since this article was created, it’s always said Armenian dynasty. Add David Marshall Lang and M. Chahin sources. The user that goes by the name of “HistoryofIran” (who is actually an Azeri Turk based on his edits), is removing almost everything that was Armenian to “Iranian”, specially when it has to do with the Orontid dynasty. There are like 5 sources that state Orontids were an Armenian state or dynasty, that he put under the Iranian sources. Where it says “Some historians say Orontid was Iranian origin”, 5 sources stating Armenian, one of them says it 3 times by David Marshall Lang. He is also cherry picking Cyril Toumanoff, who also states that Orontids were an Armenian monarchy.
