Hi from Sniperz11[edit]

Namaskara Ramkumar.

Welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you'll enjoy yourself over here. Its a big place, and there are quite a few guidelines, but dont worry or let them overwhelm you. You'll learn soon enough. If you need ANY help, assistance or clarification, feel free to contact me by email or by sending me a message on my Wikipedia talk page.

I did see the ASP page and made a few changes to it. I plan to take it and do some major reworking on it, along with my friend. Problem is, I've been busy with other stuff for the past few days... there were a few articles I'd planned to create, and I was caught up in that. Dont worry, I'll help out on the ASP page in a few days.

As for your doubts,

1. We're not allowed to cite any sources which may change (ie pages which are not permalinks, or may be replaced regularly, for eg, Weekly top 50 lists), and also, cannot cite sources which are access controlled or subscription sites. So, if the information you want to cite is available only to subscribers, then, you cannot use it. However, If I remember correctly, Janes gives about 300 words preview which is accessible to all. If your cited information is on that open part, you can use it.

2. Absolutely right about the IAF page being too aircraft focussed. Unfortunately, the problem is two-fold. a) There isnt a proper or official inventory of these equipments, and b) Even if there is, it is too uneven to make a proper table. i.e., there may be lots of info for one type, but little or no info for another.

However, if you're able to get reliable info, that would be great... thats probably the toughest part of creating an article - information. If you look at most articles, they lack in referencing.

Anyway, you're quite new to Wikipedia, but you've made some excellent edits... I took a look at some of them. Had you been an anon editor for a long time now? Keep up the good work.

A few small suggestions. I pray that you forgive me if you already know them. Just a few useful bits of information that I think new editors will find useful. Atleast, I did:

  1. I've found that the best way to get news is to look at the Defence forums like Bharat Rakshak or Frontier India or IDF... keep an eye on them. Theres info that comes across that will help immensely with articles. Plus, many of them have news threads, which are a treasure trove to find news links.
  2. Join Wikiprojects - I suggest Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history and Wikipedia:WikiProject India... Military History has an Indian Task force that you can join as well.
  3. Another suggestion... learn to use user subpages. Help can be found at Wikipedia:User page. They're really helpful, especially in creating articles or just general stuff... you can take a look at my subpages for eg, by going to my subpage directory at User:Sniperz11/Subpages.
  4. Add links to the page on other pages. As an example, you can try it with the ASP page... on the left hand side, just below the search bar, you'll see a link saying "what links here". Go to the Airborne Surveillance Platform page and click that link... you'll immediately see a list of pages that link to the ASP page. The lesser the number of pages, the lesser the chance that people will visit there. Which reduces that chance that the page will improve or get experienced editors.
To sort out this issue, you'll need to create links to the ASP page on other pages, like the IAF page, AWACS page, and other related pages. Once that happens, you'll see people editing... it'll be slow, but will pick up.
  5. Add your page to Wikipedia categories - Its a good way for others to find your page, and for you to find other related pages.
  6. Give an Edit summary to every single edit you make. It will help you and others figure out what you did, without having to check the edit history, another useful feature that you'll figure out soon.
  7. Use your watchlist - its an excellent feature. If you're interested in a page, or want to keep an eye on any edits that anyone makes to it, go to the page and click the "Watch" button on the top bar. The page will be added to your Watchlist. That way, you can keep an eye on any changes.
  8. Lastly, and probably most importantly, whenever you're on a talk page, be civil and listen to the other editors - there are a whole load of people of all kinds who edit wikipedia, and much like in real life, patience, civility and a very thick skin help. When you're making a contentious edit, the best way is to get consensus from other editors, or, if theres nobody else, by discussing the issue with the other person... usually, there is a simple communication gap, which, unfortunately leads to bitter edit wars in many cases for the simple reason that both of them didnt cool down an listen.

Anyway, thats it from me. good luck with editing. I suggest that if you're interested, you could adopt the ASP page as your own and improve it. Its a very satisfying experience to see the page improve and become popular due to your contributions. You could also help out with improving the DRDO page... its in really bad shape, and needs a big botox treatment.

Presently, I'm working on the Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program page, which me and another user created 3 days ago... hopefully, that will be a popular page in the future.

If there's any help or clarification you need, feel free to ask me.

Cheers Sniperz11talk|edits 19:25, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Theres no official way or process in particular... you just find an article that interest you and which you think you can improve, and make an effort to improve it. Thats it... Cheers. Sniperz11talk|edits 20:14, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox kamov ka-31[edit]

I have moved this to User:Everdawn/Sandbox kamov ka-31‎, as it was in the article space, and we do not have sandboxes in the article space. J Milburn (talk) 22:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like some help in getting this article ready? I can take a couple of hours, and get all the nit-picky elements in place, but I wanted to ask first, as this is on your userspace. Also, the Ka-29 uses the same basic airframe as the Ka-31 (originally Ka29RLD), so it might be good to cover these together. When we're done with the Ka-31, the Ka-27 family page is very skimpy on text, and some of your sources may apply there too. - BillCJ (talk) 19:35, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll try to do something on it in the next few days, as I can. One trick I use when creating an new article is to copy another article of a similar type (aeroplane, helicopter) from the same country or manufacturer. If an article for a related aircraft exists, that is even better. In the case of the Ka-29/-31, I would copy the Ka-27 page, and then make the necessary changes. I find this saves a lot of time, and I don't have to add all the templates from scratch. Other editors have have other tricks they may use that might be helpful too. ANyway, I'll try to get some woek doen on it in the next few days. Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 20:07, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chola Navy sandbox review, as requested[edit]

Hi Ramkumar,

No problems at all. I'd love to help. Dont worry that I'll be busy. If I am, I'll let you know. Also, I wouldnt characterize myself as only an aviation person, although I'm most comfortable editing Defence technology related pages.

Its nice that you're using user sub-pages. They're a real help, especially when creating new articles.

Overall, the Chola Navy page is pretty good. Its shaping up brilliantly. The reference list is absolutely amazing, especially considering that they're so many academic sources you've used, and how you've cited the exact pages.

I've reviewed the article, and its excellent. I'm sure that once its done, it'll be a worthy addition to Wikipedia. In fact, i think it can get a B-class status immediately, and once you get a review, GA or A-class wouldn't be difficult at all.

I've made some notes about how the page could be improved. Since you know more about the subject, feel free to disregard any points which you think are wrong.

you'll need to add more wiki-links, and once the page is up, you'll have to add it to a category. Also, add the page to Wikiprojects, like Wikiproject Military History and Wikiproject India, through the talk page. Also, to prevent the page getting orphaned, its important to add links to this page from other articles, like Chola and others. Also, create Redirects to the page from other pages that users might go to. For eg, if the page is "Chola Navy", a user going to "Chola navy" will not be able to see it. For that reason, you'll need to create a redirect from "Chola navy" to "Chola Navy". Similarly for other common search strings that will not be confused for anything else.

You'll also need to add supporting information, such as images and infoboxes. Some images are available from the Chola Dynasty page. Others, you'll have to add. Same for the infobox.

If you're adding a fair use image, it should satisfy Fair Use Criterion. Take a look at Wikipedia:Images and Wikipedia:Removal of fair use images for more info. So the image you want to upload must be clearly a fair use image. Also, if you dont want your image to get deleted, you'll need to add a Fair use rationale to the upload form, otherwise, it'll be deleted very quickly. However, dont get worried about how complicated it sounds... you'll understand it after some time. Plus, its not that hard to understand. If you need help, feel free to ask.

P.S. I'm sorry if my comments have ended up making your page look like its gone through a blender... it seemed easier to put the comments next to the text. remove them once you're done. Also, if you want, you can revert my edit. Then, you can always see my comments by looking at the old version of the page at [1].

Hope this helped. If you need any more help, feel free to ask.

Cheers. T/@ Sniperz11 editssign 22:00, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow... the page, especially the pictures, look absolutely stunning. I'm sure that this page will be popular. You're doing brilliantly, considering that its only been 10 days since you started. I think the page can be released after a day or two more of tweaking. I've made some minor fixed using WP:AWB. With your permission, i'll also try and do some tweaking and spell checks.
I still have a few concerns with the page, but all are minor, and will get fixed once you put the article on the mainspace, when editors will come and fix it up. Some of the points I'd suggest fixing are:
  1. Add information to the images itself, ie, add a description of the images on the image page. For eg, see Image:FIDSNS screenshot 22 Nov.gif. The best way is to use Template:Information. Also, in the images you didnt take, you'll have to add the source. In the case of the ASI image, if possible, get email permission from your friend. For more information on how you can do this, see User:Videmus Omnia/Requesting free content.
  2. Redlinks will have to be fixed. In many cases, these are just misspellings or spelling variations. In case of the latter, when the alternate spelling is also accepted, but there is no link to the page (like for eg, Pandiyas vs Pandyas), you can also improve it by creating a redirect to the correct page.
  3. Spelling errors - use a spellcheck for this.
  4. Images - spread the images around the page, rather than bunching them up at the bottom. It causes a few rendering errors as well when that happens.
  5. Grammar will need to be tweaked a bit, to improve readability.
Dont worry about the infobox. It wouldnt really make much of a difference in this case. I suggested it just in case it did work out. Dont tear your hair out over it. As for the links, I suggest keeping one or two, just as an extra reading thing. Also include links to the books that you said you'd found on Google books. Also, try using the citation templates. They're dead useful, especially when making so many citations.
Why dont you take a look at Wikipedia:Did you know to try and get a fact from the page on the Wikipedia main page.. it really helps to bring exposure to the page, as well as brings in new editors to it. There are a few criterion. Take a look at it. I think this page has a great chance. In fact, you can even include the boat image in the DYK to improve its visibility. I can help you out with it if you want to get it included. The only thing is that we'll have to nominate the page within a day or two of it being created... DYK only takes pages that are less than 5 days old.
Dont worry about the page... Its shaping up brilliantly & you should be proud of your work. Cheers. T/@ Sniperz11 editssign 18:27, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chola Navy sandbox, contd.[edit]

Hi Ramkumar,

Sure, no problems.. I'll take a look and do spell check as well.

P.S. When you add a comment on talk pages, its better to add the comment below the old one, rather than editing the existing comment, since it gets a bit confusing, especially when the previous text has some info. Another tip is to indent subsequent comments, by adding a ":" before the start of the paragraph.

:Like this

Which will look like below.

Like this.

For subsequent comments, and more indent, add more colons, like "::"

Cheers. T/@ Sniperz11 editssign 19:17, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
I have done spell check and some grammar checking for the page. Its shaping up brilliantly.
There isn't much else I can suggest.... you could think of rewriting a couple of paras here and there to improve readability. Also, the History section, IMO, you could remove the Lothal Image since it isn't directly connected to the subject of the page. Also, some of the frequently occurring redlinks like Khamboj and Sri vijaya can be corrected to lead to the right place. I searched for Khamboj, but couldnt find the exact page.
You can also add a map of the Chola Empire. I found Image:LocationChola empire sm.png quite useful. This may help.
Otherwise, its pretty good. Cheers. T/@ Sniperz11 editssign 20:32, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have forwarded your request to athe appropriate location. When ever you put in as a mainspace make sure WP:DYK it appear on the Did you know main page. Good luck Taprobanus (talk) 17:18, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Milhist note[edit]

Hi there. I saw your post on the milhist talk page. Once you move the article into the main namespace, then the Template:WPMILHIST can be added to the talkpage. Any article about a military history related topic can be part of the milhist project, simply add a tag. If I can help with anything, just ask. Woody (talk) 20:05, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chola Navy[edit]

Hello Ramkumar,

Hows the Chola Navy thing going? The page seems pretty stable now... I think you can move it to the main space. Cheers. T/@Sniperz11editssign 23:03, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is, however, another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading your media there instead. That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!--OsamaK 11:43, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chola Navy[edit]

Ramkumar, I cleaned up the article a little bit, I am not sure whether u are active or not. I think we should move it to the mainspace and let the community improve it. Taprobanus (talk) 20:55, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Battle of kedah.jpg has been proposed for deletion because the image seems to be taken from an unknown source, the white lines suggested that this was cropped from a larger image. The file description is unsourced too, there is no indication that the invaders were Cholas and the weapon was a flamethrower (it looks like normal fire). From the style of painting, it is similar to post-19th century Siamese traditional art, not from the Chola invasion era. 3D view (Axonometry and Isometry) of traditional Siamese art is very rare, probably this image was made after World War 2 when knowledge of modern 3D view is more understood.
