Revertfest a Trois: The Horror Icons War

[edit]

An unfurtunate edit war that occurred from October 28 - October 30, 2006 involving me (FF7SquallStrife7), User:Bignole, and User:Mikedk9109. The edit war occurred in the Template:Horror Icons edit page and escalated into the personal 'Talk' pages of the involved parties.

The Controversy

Controversy surrounded the iconic status of The Phantom (of "The Phantom of the Opera" films and The Invisible Man, first made famous in the eponymous, "The Invisible Man" films. While Bignole and Mikedk9109 asserted that the two characters were not icons, I maintained that they were. Both parties continually reverted each other's edits by either adding The Invisible Man and The Phantom to the Horror Icons Template or by deleting them from the template.

Outcome

All parties lost in this case by violating the Three-Revert Rule and were subsequently punished after several reports. The judgement of 24 hours violation was enforced by User:Avraham, who delivered the verdict very aptly with the following explanation: "Y'all are getting 24 hours, this was a revertfest a trois. -- Avi 05:25, 30 October 2006 (UTC)."[reply]

Not something to be proud of, but a good indication of the adverse effects of Edit Wars.

3RR on Template:Horror Icons

You have been temporarily blocked for violation of the three-revert rule. Please feel free to return after the block expires, but also please make an effort to discuss your changes further in the future.

Duration is 24 hours. -- Avi 05:26, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Voting

[edit]

You seriously need to clean up that new "voting" section in the Talk page. It's so cluttered that it not only takes forever to get through everything, but by the time everyone gets done it's going to be enormous. Please see Wikipedia:Straw polls for how to properly create one. Once you get that situated I'll be back. Bignole 13:19, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But that's not a true sample survey. You have the discussion taking place in the voting section. There should be a clear voting section where at best there should be a single line of statement, and then below that should be the discussion. Bignole 13:51, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I went through and cleaned it up to make it a little more neat. I had to "edit" (so to speak) some of your things, but don't worry because I didn't remove anything of yours. I merely removed blank spaces and "titles" to make it easier to read. I put your vote where I figured you wanted it, but if I changed something that you don't agree with then I apologize and you can change it back to how you like. I'm a little busy right now with a couple of term papers and an exam, so I'm not going to be able to sit down and read through everything and then go surfing for my own stuff, but I will get to the "discussion" part of the voting after this weekend, so don't fret if you see that I haven't taken part in anything other than voting till later. But I will tell you now that the only thing I am convinced of so far is the Invisible Man. Other than that, I still don't see The Phantom as an icon, but I'll get into that later. Bignole 14:30, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have the time to go into detail so I've decided just to say "add them both". I'm doing this also because some "genius" has decided to create a new template (one that is pretty much an exact copy of the one I created) only he has decided to include every character he can think of; even ones that aren't even "horror" related. He has gone and attempted to replace the existing templates with his template. So, I figure that the two you want are far closer to icon status than the 50 he wants to include on his template. He didn't even take the time to go to the existing template, he just created his own (today) and replaced them all. You should check it out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Horrormovie_Icons Bignole 04:52, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said on the talk page, I agree with Invisi Man, not the Phantom....but now that I see what will happen if we can't get this template in good shape, I'd rather quit the bickering over these two and move on to setting up a set of rules to establish what should and should not be including. What's funny is he even copied the color scheme and everything. It's an identical template, minus the addition category and names. That's just wrong..lol. Bignole

Well, hopefully he won't be able to get away with that. I think you are right, I think he was just trying to get around the protection. I guess we'll see what we'll see. Feel free, once the protection has been lifted (and you may want to mention that to Avi if you haven't already) to add them to the list. I've got to put the finishing touches on this last paper that I had to write. Hopefully in the coming week we can work on establishing a set of rules for deciding on "icon status". Bignole 06:38, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had seen it. I wasn't sure if I should vote, seeing as I created the original, but I went ahead and did so anyway. Also, I applied to have the proection lifted, don't know if it has been done yet. Bignole 00:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Horror Icons vote

[edit]

I'll try to keep an eye out for it. What I suggest is 1) drop me a line when your vote has a consensus, and more importantly, put {{editprotected}} on the talk page, to flag it for any passing admin. Good Luck! -- Avi 01:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest placing the other template up for deletion/merge into yours on WP:TFD, and having the editors who agreed make their opinions known. Summarily deleting someone elses work without discussion is not usually a good idea. How would you feel if he asked a sysop to do that to your templet . That's one of the frustrating things about being open to all for editing, but it's worth it in the long run, because we get many more good editors that way. Try requesting a merge/deletion. It may take a week, but its the better, wiki-approved route. Good Luck! -- Avi 11:00, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I requested deletion on the WP:TFD page.

Template:Horrormovie Icons (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Delete. Template is almost an exact copy of Template: Horror Icons, which was created first and continues to maintain a discussion of who should become listed on the template via a survey. I believe the template was created to circumvent the protection on Template: Horror Icons, which resulted after the edit wars on the template, so that user can add his own "horror icons" to the list without a consensus. A lot of people violated the 3RR because of the original template and debating on who was an icon. Just creating another one to avoid protection is not the solution.

Templates

[edit]

Thanks for your help, [1] but how would I be able to transclude the template onto the Rolling Thunder (video games) pages? Template is currently on my user page. (FF7SquallStrife7 04:09, 4 November 2006 (UTC)) (FF7SquallStrife7 09:29, 5 November 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Simply copy and paste the code into Template:Rolling Thunder series, and then add, to the bottom of each article, the following: {{Rolling Thunder series}} ~ User:Combination 13:13, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MGS3 soundtrack

[edit]

Would you have any objections to merging the soundtrack article into Snake Eater's Audio section? It's only a paragraph long. -- Steel 12:35, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just because Metal Gear Solid does it that way doesn't mean that's the best way. I'll merge it sometime tomorrow, though it's probably best to just link to the track list rather than having it clutter up the article. -- Steel 01:09, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
