IMAGE PERMISSIONS

[edit]

Almost all of my images have been released into the public domain (the only ones that haven't are derived from other images which had different licensing requirements). If the image description page says it is in the public domain, you may feel free to use it for any purpose or reason. If you need to credit somebody, credit "Wikimedia Commons". Otherwise, leave it uncredited. Thanks. --Fastfission (talk) 15:10, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Teller-Ulam design

[edit]

Hello, I see that you are still somewhat active. I am working on a rewrite of Teller-Ulam_design. (See my sandbox at [1] for the work in progress.) I would like to modify your excellent image by closing in the top of the secondary. I am reluctant to tamper with an image that has been a Featured Picture, and I don't know how to use .svg format. The modified image at right is in .png format, which I do know how to use. I don't think my modification adversely impacts the aesthetic of this stunning image. What do you think? The reason for the change is that an essential part of Teller-Ulam is that the interior of the secondary has to be protected against premature heating from the primary. The secondary's heat comes from the sparkplug after compression (radiation implosion). Ideally, the modification could be made in your .svg format and incorporated into [2]. What do you think? Thanks again for the great artwork. HowardMorland (talk) 05:18, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your message on my talk page. Thanks for responding. Here are the two .png files which I have uploaded to commons. You can see how I plan to use them in [3]. The text is still under construction. The altered .png images display exactly like the .svg originals, so I don't know why .svg is superior (except I could not have drawn either image from scratch in .png). The only change in the image at right is the cap shielding the fusion fuel from direct impact of the primary radiation. The US News and World Report image of the W-87 was deleted by User Sandstein for copyright issues, so I modified your W-88. As a pair (W-87 & W-88) they make a nice illustration anyway.
If you could direct me to an online tutorial on how to use inkscape, I would love to learn it. Thanks. HowardMorland (talk) 18:55, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Ahmadinejad at Natanz.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Ahmadinejad at Natanz.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Angus McLellan (Talk) 15:47, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Teller-Ulam device firing sequence.png has wrong description

[edit]

Greetings. Your description for the Teller-Ulam device is wrong, the polystyrene only acts as a support, as it's completely transparent to X-rays. And it would not provide enough pressure to compress an uranium/lead tamper. What compresses the tamper is the evaporation of the surface of the tamper by the X-rays ( a process known as ablation ). For more info check http://nuclearweaponarchive.org/Nwfaq/Nfaq4-4.html#Nfaq4.4.3 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryoandr (talkcontribs) 05:02, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I know. The PNG is not used any more anyway. I am not going to bother to correct it. The descriptions at Teller-Ulam device are more than enough, I think. --Fastfission (talk) 21:43, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HowardMorland's derivative work on one of your creations

[edit]

Hello Fastfission...
Regarding this image, I would very much like to recreate\convert that HowardMorland's work to SVG format ,but for doing so, I need your fabulous original vector drawing of the bomb.
can you please send it to me or upload it to wikimedia commons? Yar2 (talk) 23:01, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not Fastfission, but...
The original Fastfission version is already on commons: [4]
The more detailed version that Howard did is a non-vector scan of John Coster-Mullen's book illustration, which Howard then colorized to match Fastfission's older version here. It's never been in vector format hereabouts.
John Coster-Mullen may have drawn it with a vector drawing program for his book. I could ask him if that's so and if he'd be willing to donate it. But if not, you'll have to redraw from scratch. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 01:05, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The original Fastfission version is, of course, completely different. If you would be so kind to ask John Coster-Mullen to donate the original drawing, it would be great. thanks.. Yar2 (talk) 02:18, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just convert it using the original SVG drawing as a starting point? It is not so different from a graphics point of view. The original is based on the one in Chuck Hansen's book with input from what Sublette's Nuclear Weapons Archive had at the time about the sabot. At the very least, the original gives you the LB outline to work with. The internal components are just a series of differently sized squares (from an SVG perspective) so it is not really all that complicated a drawing to replicate. In Inkscape you could import the Howard Morland version and then put the SVG version on top of that, set the opacity to 50% or so, and re-fit it. --Fastfission (talk) 21:41, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Documentary Inquiry - National Geographic Channel

[edit]

Dear Fastfission,

I work as an assistant producer for a television production company called Blink Films based in the UK. We are producing a documentary for the National Geographic Channel and WNET looking at the US/Soviet arms race during the 1950s and 60s. We are exploring the variety of different weapons that were tested and as a way of illustrating the bombs we want to use some animation to show the function of the bomb. I saw your fission bomb animation and wondered if we could talk about the possibility of us using it in our film. I was hoping you could send me a suitable telephone number and a convenient time to call to my email: crispin.green@blinkfilmsuk.com so we could talk in more detail about your images. Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Crispin

Binding energy per nucleon graphic

[edit]

This otherwise excellent graphic lacks the nuclide with the highest binding energy per nucleon, Nickel-62. If you were kind enough to include it, I think it would be great. Ni 62 isn't as abundant as Fe 56 so has missed out being included, but you have made exceptions to the abundance criteria for good reasons to include other nuclides such as U 235, so for similar reasons Ni 62 must surely be even more important to include. As you have the graphics skills for this, please could you do this for us? SciberDoc (talk) 12:59, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I have seen a kind of graph in the paper as of 2010 May 22 "A new energy source from nuclear fusion" of prof. S. Foccardi and A. Rossi <http://www.journal-of-nuclear-physics.com/files/Rossi-Focardi_paper.pdf>. They do not refer to any source, so the original visualisation of the relationship - MeV/c^2 vs number of nucleons - might be up to them... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.227.102.26 (talk) 10:21, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Project 4.1

[edit]

I note you started the article Project 4.1 and included a quote by Barton C. Hacker:-

In March 1954, the AEC had quickly decided that learning how the Marshallese victims of Castle Bravo responsed to their accidental exposure

This was takem from Hackers Elements of controversy: the Atomic Energy Commission and radiation safety in nuclear weapons testing, 1947-1974 (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1994) pp. 226-228.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Notice of change

[edit]

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. After you have been inactive for three years, you may seek return of the tools only through WP:RFA. Thank you. MBisanz talk 00:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page appearance: Manhattan Project

[edit]

This is a note to let the main editors of Manhattan Project know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on July 16, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 16, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Trinity Test of the Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project was a research and development project that produced the first atomic bombs during World War II. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. From 1942 to 1946, the project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the US Army Corps of Engineers. It began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US$2 billion (the equivalent of about $26 billion now). Although it operated under a tight blanket of security, it was penetrated by Soviet atomic spies. The first device ever detonated was an implosion-type nuclear weapon in the Trinity test (pictured), conducted at New Mexico's Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range on 16 July 1945. Project personnel participated in the Alsos Mission in Europe, and in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war the Manhattan Project conducted weapons testing in Operation Crossroads, developed new weapons, established the network of national laboratories, supported medical research into radiology and laid the foundations for a nuclear navy. It was replaced by the Atomic Energy Commssion and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project in 1947. (Full article...)

I hear you about "time to waste," but... could you help me out a little on Abdul Qadeer Khan ?

[edit]

I've read and admired your work on nuclear weapons-related issues here in Wikipedia for years, and noted your comments on our article on Abdul Qadheer Khan.

It's in connection with that article I'm asking for a little help (and yes, I'm being lazy). I'm hoping that you have readily available a good, WP:SOURCE reference on A.Q. Khan's time in the Netherlands with FDO and URENCO. The original editor quotes a popular-audience book promoting A.Q. Khan,

Rehman, Shahidur (May 1999), "§Dr. A. Q. Khan: Nothing Succeed like Success", Long Road to Chagai, Islamabad, Islamabad Capital Territory: Printwise Publications, pp. 47–60, ISBN 969-8500-00-6

to support the following statements about Dr. Abdul Qaheer Khan contradicted by other reputable sources on this part of Dr. Khan's career:

"Khan joined the senior staff of the Physics Dynamics Research Laboratory in Amsterdam from a recommendation by his mentor, Martin J. Brabers.[16] His initial studies were on the high-strength metals used in the development of centrifuges.[16]",

"When Urenco offered him to join the senior scientific staff there, Khan left the Physics Laboratory where he performed physics experiments on uranium metallurgy,[16] to produce reactor-grade uranium usable for light water reactors.[16]" and

"Khan's leading-edge research in metallurgy brought laurels to Urenco, which had him as one of the most senior scientists at the facility where he researched and studied.[16] His pioneering research greatly improved the technological efficiency of the Zippe method; eventually, Urenco gave Khan access to the blueprints for the Zippe centrifuge to find mathematical solutions for the physics problems in the gas centrifuges.[16]"

First, are these statements true at all to your knowledge?

I'm thinking "no," but reading a few critical reviews on the books I've leaned on for information on this part of Khan's life made me want to find better references.

I'm not asking you to do my work for me on this, if you haven't done it already. I'm just hoping you'd have that information readily accessible. I'm going to look it all up, anyway, but since you've looked into a lot of this stuff, I had hopes....

Thanks for your time! loupgarous (talk) 19:24, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The file File:Wir stehen nicht allein.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned "keep local" file.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 21:22, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
