French[edit]

Hey, I was looking at the list of translators and I saw your name pop up... I have translated some things (I was taking some information on Fadela Amara) but I am nowhere near fluent... However, I just listed two articles for translation from French into English. They are fr:Voile islamique en France and fr:Hijab. The first is all new material and I thought might be interesting, and for the second FR has some interesting information that we don't have. Since you speak French and English and work on Islam-related articles I figured you might have an opinion or maybe want to do some of it. Thanks. gren グレン 02:59, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I also attempted to start hisba... yet.... I failed. It's really bad what I've done but I created it (adding expert tag) because the concept seemed important. gren グレン 10:05, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, no pressure. I figured it was necessary to have someone who works with Islamic topics write it since it has the NPOV tag in order to help smooth it out here. Likewise, if some section of it is just pure crap then no real need to translate it. Good luck and if I can help in some way just ask... I have a very basic understanding of French that I can combine with general knowledge on the topic and maybe be of some use. gren グレン 00:51, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Fayssal. They are trying to reinstate this article, so can you please take a look? Yuber(talk) 16:44, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Svest, need help at this article. I'm dealing with a stridently Iranian nationalist editor who wants to turn one section into a long essay about how all the glories of Islamic civilization were due to the Persians, Persians valiantly fought back against Arab domination, etc. etc. He insists that his version is THE TRUTH and that I am biased and ignorant for even questioning it.

If you're Sunni, you may also want to have a look at Ali ibn Abi Talib and Shia Islam, where Shi'a editors are pushing Shi'a-POV versions. Zora 21:25, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Svest, the barnstar is for the contributions you have listed on your user page, not something specific. I was horrified when I say how long you had been here, how many edits you had made and yet, there were no awards. Well, I had to remedy that. !מזל טוב in Hebrew is "Mazal Tov!" I'm sure you know what that means. Izehar 23:39, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

John Coltrane[edit]

Aloha. On October 3 you added Category:Muslim converts to John Coltrane [1]. What source can you cite for this claim? If you can, please reply to the "Islamic Convert" section at Talk:John Coltrane. Thank you. --Viriditas 04:50, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your prompt and informative reply. Hopefully we can add some of the information that you left on the talk page into the article. --Viriditas 01:29, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting section! Coltrane was heavily influenced by Sufism, so that should be mentioned somewhere. Bassist Donald Garrett is quoted as recommending Sufism to Coltrane. If you're going to mention the claim abut "Allah Supreme", then you should also describe Coltrane's recording of Om which includes the chanting of verses from the Bhagavad-Gita. --Viriditas 03:07, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've made some major changes and removed some stuff for cleanup (Alice didn't quite fit in context, and the African religion bit needs to be clarified--but this stuff could certainly be added back, expanded, and fit in chronologically). We could use some more about the Muslim Jazz scene, perhaps more about Naima's influence, etc. I would defintely like to seee the relationship between A Love Supreme and Islam expanded, as well as adding information about the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church. There's a lot to do, so if you have any free time, jump in. --Viriditas 10:47, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:COUSCOUSs.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:COUSCOUSs.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. Suitable comments[edit]

Dear Fayssal -- OK, I was angry and upset and I shouldn't have labeled it as "Sunni" vandalism -- even though it was clearly done by a Sunni. I'm just exhausted by dealing with Striver, and his attempt to turn the bio of Ali into Shi'a piety, and ALSO dealing with a rash of vandalism, seemingly both Sunni and Shi'a motivated, in various other Islam-related articles. I am getting so dang tired of dealing with POV warriors for one or another POV, and getting stuck in the middle with both sides screaming at me. Zora 01:42, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Although my RfA is not over yet, I figured that since so many people voted before it had been posted, I may as well start thanking people before it wraps up. It'll take me that long to thank everyone who voted anyway! Thank you for your support - even through your suspicions that this was April 1 coming early! I'll do my best as an admin to make the reality rise to the level of the dream. BD2412 T 05:05, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Just an informal comment. I know many Moroccans (a country that really interests me a lot), and from what I am used to see, your command over English is something that comes to me as a pleasant surprise! deeptrivia (talk) 19:45, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just to qualify my statement a bit more, I taught English to a group of students in France, some of which were Moroccans, and the Moroccans had a much better level than the rest. Help, please, with Striver and Paradoxic[edit]

Svest, I could rilly rilly use some help at Ali ibn Abi Talib and Islamic conquest of Iran. At Ali, Striver is determined to impose a Shi'a version, including refs to Shi'a magazines in the "Non-Muslim view of Ali" section. At the Islamic conquest article, I'm dealing with an Iranian nationalist named Paradoxic who believes that all the supposed achievements of the Islamic Golden Age are due to Persians, not Arabs. Just look at the talk page there -- Paradoxic says he refuses to compromise because I'm a known Hindu and hater of Iranians/Arabs/Muslims/Shi'a. If you can't help, are there any Arabs and/or Sunni who can? Zora 00:10, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re Umar -- Striver feels very strongly that Umar killed Fatima. I have found highly colored accounts of this supposed event on some Shi'a websites, so I suppose it is a common Shi'a belief. From my POV, the ordinary Shi'a seem to have a comic book view of history, with shining heroes (the Ahl-ul-Bayt) and evil villains (the Sunni). I'm reading a history of Shi'a Islam right now which describes various religious events (the passion plays, various memorial services) which are highly dramatized, designed to evoke tears and anger. I suspect that this colors Striver's view of history. (There may be Shi'a scholars with more nuanced views.) So you really shouldn't remove this from the Shi'a view section, as nutso as it may seem to you. Zora 03:10, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Or did you remove it? Am I just tired and hallucinating? Should I perhaps stop and eat some dinner? Sorry if I scolded you in error. <glyph of abasement> Zora 04:03, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ali Sina[edit]

I just checked out the Ali Sina page...so far as I know I was never involved on that page before. Moroccan Arabic[edit]

I am a huge fan of soccer (or football), mostly playing it. Unfortunately, I don't follow soccer clubs too much, since they don't receive too much coverage here in Texas. Arab Gulf states?[edit]

If you can really figure out how that differs from "Persian Gulf states" then that is good. If you want the cat to have a healthy life, then please get the cat "Arab Gulf states" and "Persian Gulf Arab states" to have the same name. Rename one or the other so that the names match. And then make it either the parent cat or subcat of "Persian Gulf states", if that makes sense. Otherwise, why bother confusing people with this hair-splitting? -- Fplay 05:33, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Categories in texts[edit]

Good point on the WS-history talk page, I (think) I did what you told me. I have a question though... you're an administrator (congratulations!), so I guess you know this. I have created the category "Sahrawi tribes", but I can't link it from pages.

Here, for example, I try:
Category:Sahrawi tribes
..and nothing shows.

I think it would be very useful in the Western Sahara demographics page, for example, but how to do it? Arre 21:03, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, now I saw how you did it (with a ":"). I'll just do that. Good luck with the admin thing, then! Arre 21:23, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I could. But it's really one single chapter (human rights), and its not overly long, so I believe it would be better to treat it as a single unit. Also, if I start removing parts, then there would probably be complaints about information missing about Moroccan abuse/Polisario abuse (whichever part is removed). I wrote a shorter piece on HR some months back, but it was deleted by User: Daryou just before the page was locked. We both agreed that there should be something on human rights, though, and I promised to add paragraphs on the Tindouf refugees. Now, I don't think Daryou is still here (about a month ago, he put a "totally disputed" tag on several pages and then vanished), but my point is that the issue had been discussed. Also, its been there for several days without any complaints (and its quite visible, so people interested in the issue would have noticed). My conclusion: I'm not sure its the best way in this case - but if you insist, no problem.
If you feel strongly about this, you might also want to check out Sahrawi and Lebanese Civil War, where I made long edits similar to the one on WS History.
  • I'm practically the only one editing the Sahrawi page, but Daryou had issues with some thing, so we ended up having a two-person mammoth debate. In the end we agreed on practically everything, and then he left. So I kept those things we agreed on, and expanded the rest, reorganized the headings etc.
  • On the LCW page, there's been several edits since, and no-one has complained so far. I've been expanding bit by bit since, to fill out the whole article, which was in quite poor shape. Presently, I'm a bit focused on Lebanese party pages ... almost all of them are awfully biased and rarely link correctly to each other.
To sum up, I appreciate what you're saying, and I will not do similar length edits in the future. But I'm not sure all of these need to be redone piece-by-piece because of that, now.Arre 15:43, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
