Importance rating of Terabyte, etc.

I've not been involved with projects or article ratings, so I'm unfamiliar with how these things work, but I've started a discussion of the importance ratings you've assigned to Kilo/Mega/Giga/Tera/Peta/Exabyte at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computing/Assessment#Local_list. Rwessel (talk) 03:53, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

I saw that, but didn't see guidelines that would appear to justify high or mid ratings for these articles. Rwessel (talk) 03:58, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
Feel free to edit the ratings yourself. Article ratings are always subjective. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 04:00, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
I realize that, but given my unfamiliarity with the customs of the area, and the very thin guidelines (at least that I've found), and the fact that you've obviously come to quite a different conclusion than I have, I was hoping to discuss the issue, rather than just jumping in and changing them all to "low". Re: GAR Feminism

Hi Sovereign Sentinel - just wondering why you're asking for a GAR on Feminism? Is there a problem with it or have the standards changed? It'd be helpful to know so the page can be improved--Cailil talk 14:23, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

  • I am not sure if GA standards are maintained on that article since being promoted in 2011. I am not sure if the article is stable either. Note that I am an uninvolved editor. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 14:36, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid I'm actually still unclear about this. Is your point that this a routine "it's been 4 years" recheck, or is there something specifically that needs fixing in the article or that struck you as "off"? Sorry to keep asking but explaining the reason for a review is a core part of the GAR process. Furthermore you need to notify the major contributors and the WikiProjects--Cailil talk 20:11, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
  • Sorry SS - I missed the fact that you removed the template[1] after your last comment. Feel free to ignore the above if you're not going forward with this--Cailil talk 00:30, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
  • The article struck me as not neutral enough. I notice the notice at the talk page header, but sometimes maintaining article quality is easier said than done. Note that the template I added was a GAR request template, so the main contributors only have to be notified if a review is to take place. Since obviously you are more familiar with the article than me, and from your response you think that the article still meets the GA criteria, I have removed the template. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 00:55, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Depression Quest

The article Depression Quest you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. Hi and Thanks for reminding me. I realised the lack of sources while translating - poor work, indeed. But don't worry, I'll return to the task unless somebody else does it before me. --Paj (talk) 05:36, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

That note was added while I was patrolling pages. The article meets notability requirements, but it lacks third-party sources. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 07:56, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

16:30:41, 14 August 2015 review of submission by MoriahRusso

Hello, Sovereign Sentinel. I like your username! Of course, I'm disappointed to see that my page submitted for creation was declined. I can see where the objection to pages promoting neologisms comes from, but I do not think that the subject of this Charleston Syllabus page (User:MoriahRusso/sandbox) should be considered a definition of a neologism. Rather, the hashtag is representative of a social movement that the background section of the page aims to document. The page is not intended to increase the usage of the hashtag, by any means. Crowdsourced twitter syllabi are a new trend on social media networks that should be recorded. I would love the opportunity to populate this page with more diverse secondary source references not authored by the creators of the hashtag. The Charleston Syllabus hashtag trended for an entire week on Twitter and attracted more than 10k tweets within days of its debut. This crowd-sourcing project was covered in the LA Times, the Chronicle of Higher Ed, and on NPR and PBS. Would you reconsider? Best, MoriahRusso (talk) 16:30, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Additionally, I believe that *even if* this subject were to be considered a neologism, it would meet Wikipedia requirements for "substantial use and press coverage" :) Let me know what you think. I've re-submitted the page for review after revising some of the references and building up the background coverage. MoriahRusso (talk) 17:29, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

I will let another editor decide whether to accept the submission. That page has been created by you more than once in the past, then deleted. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 17:32, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, I know. Originally the article contained the actual syllabi lists but another editor recommended I remove the lists (primary material) and instead stick to the contextualizing copy and link to the list on the original webpage. MoriahRusso (talk) 18:34, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

notability

Hello! I have been trying to submit a page on a string arranger I know who is Emmy nominated, has worked on network television and generally quite accomplished. I was surprised he didn't have a page...especially when I know several other musicians and producers who have super low not-notable credits but have their own wiki pages. Admittedly, I am not an experienced wiki editor, so I am not sure if that has something to do with it? (All of life seems to be "who you know.":-) So since you were the latest to decline my page, I wondered if you could help me. I have read the notability guidelines several times and Mark Evitts seems to meet at least two (if not more) of the requirements. Am I not referencing correctly? Am I just crappy at html? :-( I would love any assistance you could offer. Thank you so much!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Mark_Evitts intoacloud - August 14, 2015 Intoacloud (talk) 23:24, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

  • Upon inspection, your article does meet WP:MUSICBIO notability requirements. I have accepted the article. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 02:37, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Request on 04:14:13, 15 August 2015 for assistance on AfC submission by Chapman*55

Hello Sovereign Sentinel and thank you for taking the time to review my article submission on Aspley East State School. I am at a loss to understand rejection of the current article draft on grounds of insufficient notability and references. My guide for putting this together has been a number of very similar and almost identical format articles on other state schools in the Brisbane area which already have Wikipedia article pages and which actually have less references. These can be found for Regents Park State School, Chapel Hill State School, Marsden State School, Aspley State High School and almost all other State High Schools in Brisbane. Thank you for reconsidering. (Chapman*55 (talk) 04:14, 15 August 2015 (UTC))

Chapman*55 (talk) 04:14, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

For a school to have an article on Wikipedia, it must meet the WP:ORG notability guidelines. The fact that other stuff exists is not a valid argument for inclusion on Wikipedia. I am sorry, but currently I do not think that current references are sufficient to meet WP:ORG guidelines. The examples you noted may also not meet notability guidelines and may be deleted. Anyway, thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 04:44, 15 August 2015 (UTC)
Also, the tone of the article is very promotional. It is basically an advertisement for the school. Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion. This is another issue that needs to be fixed. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 04:56, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply. I understand your comments and am still left puzzled by the large number of such similar articles in Wikipedia. I decided to test your advice and list one of the other local school articles for deletion on the same grounds provided for declining my article. Can I refer you to Talk:Chapel Hill State School where a very similar article of this nature has attracted a solid level of support when proposed for deletion and is clearly part of ongoing projects pertaining to schools and also Queensland. I am prepared to tone back the promotional angle of the language used. Does this information affect your decision? (Chapman*55 (talk) 11:30, 15 August 2015 (UTC))

I am afraid that you are doing it wrongly… you forgot to replace the article name while nominating the page for deletion. I have reverted your edits for now. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 11:47, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

O.K. thanks for that. I guess the main point is what I uncovered in the process as referred to above and am interested in your response to that. Thanks for working with me. (Chapman*55 (talk) 11:58, 15 August 2015 (UTC))

Hello sovereign Sentinel. I have reworked some of the wording and have inserted additional secondary sources, particularly those that verify the notability of the school around community importance, scholastic success and unique status. It is particularly notable as a school for the blind, as one of the select group of Queensland Independent Public Schools. The inclusion of notable alumni adds to the distinction of the school. It was recently singled out by national news television for mention and there is a link to this video. I have been reading the various articles in Wikipedia related to schools articles and note there is considerable disagreement around defining notability for such articles. I would also point out that WikiProject Queensland, WikiProject Australia and WikiProject Education in Australia were supportive of the article on Chapel Hill State School when it was proposed for deletion and this is a very similar article. I look forward to your assessment and thank you for your time. (Chapman*55 (talk) 03:59, 16 August 2015 (UTC))

Ammy Virk

Hello Sovereign Sentinel.
I came here after trying to move Ammy Virk (Singer) to Ammy Virk, but, that exact title is protected from creation. I did a search and found that you had been reviewing Draft:Ammy Virk. That pre-existing 'Virk' page appears to be about the same person, both born 1992? Protection appears to stem from creation of same page by Rajvir Singh Randhawa (talk · contribs) who is banned for sock-puppetry.

Seperate issue, Needreview (talk · contribs) created the Draft:Ammy Virk page and Draft:Navjit Buttar. It appears that someone has 'borrowed' their text and created Navjit Buttar without attribution! I have therefore put a WP:CSD#G12 "Unambiguous copyright infringement" template on that page. 220 of Borg 12:32, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. I have listed the currently existing Ammy Virk article at WP:RMT to be moved. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 12:50, 15 August 2015 (UTC)

DYK lead image variety

Sovereign Sentinel, DYK's queue 6 has a building in it, so I just moved a building from prep 1 to prep 3 to prevent two buildings being pictured on the main page in a row, and separated three people in a row that had been in preps 2, 3, and 4. So you can understand my dismay when I noticed that you'd just promoted yet another building to prep 1. Please be sure to vary the type of image from one set to another in your future promotions, and consider swapping the latest building from lead to later. Many thanks. 09:32:36, 18 August 2015 review of submission by Cynluoacom

Hi SS, I am requesting a re-review because I'm not sure if my draft gets rejected because I'm referencing wrong or because the company I'm creating a page isn't notable enough for Wikipedia. This is strange because WhatsNew Group has been in major media publications read by millions of viewers each month (Tech in Asia, e27, Daily Social, etc.).

Please let me know how I can improve this page because I have already cited secondary sources that have nothing to do with WhatsNew & added more references. Not sure how pages like Zalora https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zalora have been approved and they are written like an advertisement.

Best regards, cynluo

Can you please be more specific in regards to what in this article makes it sound "essay-like" ? Obviously, I keep getting this response and numerous edits and support from the help desk hasn't improved it.

Can you be specific about which references are inappropriate for wikipedia?

This topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_for_social_development is very similar to sports-based youth development. Can you explain why this wiki article is accepted and the one I'm writing is not?

Thanks!

Issues over Heathenry page

Hello there Sovereign Sentinel. Thank you for overseeing the move of the Germanic neopaganism page to Heathenry (new religious movement), as was the conclusion to the Talk Page discussion. Unfortunately another editor isn't happy that this has happened, and has tried to move it back by creating a redirect back to Germanic neopaganism. I'm not sure what do to in this situation and whether to seek sanctions against this user. Do you have any recommendations as to how to proceed on this one ? Best, Midnightblueowl (talk) 21:30, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I've undone their changes manually but fear that they might try again. Any help that you could bring would be appreciated. Best, Midnightblueowl (talk) 21:42, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Tell the user who moved the page back to its original location to start a new move request and see if there is consensus to move it back. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 01:30, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Life on Mercury

I'm not sure this should've been a non-admin closure. It was merged and redirected before an ended up being reverted. Also with 4 deletes, one keep, and 2 merges puts it in 50/50 territory.--Savonneux (talk) 00:19, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Even if an admin deleted the page, another user may have created the redirect anyway. The page title is a plausible redirect, and since the page content is removed anyway, there is not much of a difference between deleting and redirecting, hence my closure. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 01:37, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Non-admin closure

Your Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ontario Moderate Party was a bit shaky.

Yes, an admin might have closed this as "keep" but there's a good chance he would've closed it as "no consensus/default keep" or re-listed it. "No consensus/default" and "keep" differ in that if someone re-nominates a page that recently closed as "keep" it is likely to be viewed as disruptive editing. Not so for a page that was closed a month or two ago as "no consensus.

WP:Non-admin closures should be done only when there won't be any serious opposition to the result. In this case I wouldn't undo your closure but be a bit more careful next time and only do non-admin closures if you are 99% nobody will dispute the result. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:18, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I will be more careful next time. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 01:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Germanic neopaganism

Germanic neopaganism

I was traveling in Europe, and I missed the recent "rigged" election on renaming the article Heathenry (new religious movement). I say rigged because the person who suggested the change and two persons who never edited the page carried the change in a 3 to 1 vote.

I DO NOT want to pursue the issue right now, but I plan to pursue it at a future date.

My main problem with the change is the definition of "heathen" in American English. Informally, to most Americans it is an offensive term, and means "irreligious, uncivilized, or unenlightened." Moreover, the pagans who endorse the use of "heathen" do so because pagan is derived from Latin and French and "heathen" is "folkish."

In my opinion the religion is called Odinism or Ásatrú, but Germanic neopaganism works because it is neutral. --ThorLives (talk) 04:31, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

I am completely uninvolved with the article other than closing the RM discussion and carrying out the name change. You may want to open a new RM request to seek consensus for moving it back to its original location. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 05:05, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Building DYK prep sets

Hi, I noticed you're pitching in to build prep sets. Thanks for your contribution! I just noticed that some of the hooks you promoted to Prep 5 were among the most recent nominations. As a general rule, we promote the oldest hooks on the nomination page first. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 00:06, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

Of course I know this. It is more important to ensure variety in each set of hooks than to promote the oldest hooks. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 05:08, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
I understand. I also like to pull one from the bottom to complete a set. But with 100+ approved nominations, there shouldn't be a problem finding variety. Yoninah (talk) 09:48, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
I see. I will try to look at older approved hooks when promoting hooks to prep sets. Thank you. sovereign°sentinel (contribs) 09:50, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. If someone can provide sources that confirm your claims about this redirect, I will be happy to reconsider. The only reliable sources I could find on the subject confirmed only that the subject was being harassed with this name as part of the Gamergate controversy. I saw no reliable sources confirming that it is actually the subject's name, and the name is not mentioned in any way at the subject's article. Based on that, it's a clear and obvious G10. Sources were mentioned at the RFD, but I could not find them at all (and the RFD has been oversighted, given the quite reasonable BLP concerns). So if there are sources, please provide them. Thanks.
