Adoption[edit]

Of course I would be happy to "adopt" you. I can't say we get an awful lot of actuaries around here (as I'm sure you've deduced from the quality of related articles!), but if anything, UK residents do tend to punch above their weight compared to the Americans round here. Clearly, you've done some anonymous editing before, so I shan't go on, but if you do have any questions, you know where my talk page is.

From an article-creation point of view, your sandboxes all look good (you wouldn't believe some of the rubbish we get). Just a few minor things: it is standard to include "Further reading" before external links, for example, and {{Cite web}} tends to give a more academic looking reference for URLs. "===" headings come below "==" headings ("=" are even bigger, but are not used in main (article) space); "==" is probably what you want for all your headings in the CMI article.

Ah, well, take the lack of anonymous editing as a compliment: you obviously have an aptitude for picking up the correct way of doing things faster than most.

In completely the wrong order:
  • To request the deletion of a page in your own userspace (normally where you are the only significant contributor), you can add {{db-userreq}}. And be happy to wait. Alternatively, you could ask an admin (such as myself) directly, though this isn't usually needed. In this case, you'll also want to check your chosen name against the naming conventions, but I think the accented variation will be fine.
  • Your formatting and referencing looks good, just a few things: it is customary embolden the title where it appears in the first words of the lead paragraph, and, in a perfect world, not to have any information in the lead that isn't in the rest of the article somewhere (more instruction). You've left a few underscores in links, but I'm sure you were going to remove them anyway. Likewise, external links are probably not good to keep in image captions (though I am unfamiliar with the chess reference). Either use the link as a reference (if it is reliable) or include in an "External links" section. On a more general note, He also worked as a judge[1] in Zagreb and Chessmetrics gives his highest rating as 2618 in January 1953[2], which places him 39th in the world at that time are slightly ambiguous: does source one not comment on where he worked? Does source 2 not rank him 39th in the world at that time? The implication is not, but I thought I'd ask.
  • Finally, the issue of attributing other Wikipedias is still slightly contentious. In my experience, you ought to attribute them with one of these at the top of a references section. The controversy itself surround whether you can reference things to them, on which the prevailing thought is not; you should find your own sources.

Okay, for many of my thoughts on WikiPolitics, you can read my Request for Adminship. The best feeling is undoubtedly seeing someone read an article you've written, or complimenting it. My advice would be to never forget that, however bogged down in the political posturing you find yourself. Several of our best contributors plug away behinds the scenes day after say, unseen and unheard.
"Are there any areas that you'd suggest I look into in particular?" Nice try, but you're going to have to find that out yourself. You may find that joining a WikiProject can be a useful step, in an area that interests you. (Be warned though, some are more active than others!)
"What things really annoy you about Wikipedia / which parts do you think could work better?" In some ways, the single thing that annoys me most is the assumption that Wikipedia is "broken" and needs to be "fixed". It's never going to be perfect, so we may as well enjoy it now, rather than focussing on some random point in the future when everything will be just right.

Backlog drive[edit]

Hello Fletch79,

WikiProject Orphanage is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive to de-orphan articles which have orphan tags!
The goal is to eliminate the backlog of orphan articles. There are currently 58624 articles which have orphan tags. The drive is running from April 12, 2014 to May 12, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all editors participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive. To add your name in the participants list click here.

deOrphaning script[edit]

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.
