Help request[edit]

helpme I have contributed a new article, my first, and find everything very confusing. I am awaiting a review but I am unsure as to whether I have done everything correctly so that I am entitled to a review.

Fredmw (talk) 08:31, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess you mean, User:Fredmw/Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain, Hyde Park, Sydney ,Australia?
"written by F J Walker's grandson" does not count as a "reliable source" - the facts need references to books, newspapers, or other publications; see WP:VRS. I'll add help on how to format references, below.
Also, it'd be good to add some "wiki links". For example, if I put...

Chzz is from London. She is a dentist.

...that appears as;

Chzz is from London. She is a dentist.

I just added a couple to your article; I changed the first line to;

The Frederic Joseph Walker Memorial Fountain is in Hyde Park, Sydney, Australia.

See also WP:CHEATSHEET.
The most important thing, though, is the references.
Once you think it is ready, you can submit it for a review, just by putting exactly this on the top linel

If you have problems, just use another helpme. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  09:38, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How references work[edit]

Simple references[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.

He likes tea.
b) A section called "References" with the special code "reflist";
References
reflist

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Fredmw/reftest and try it out.

Named references[edit]

Chzz was born in 1837.

Chzz lives in Footown.

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates[edit]

You can put anything you like between , but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals.

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

It needs some tidying-up before it could be made live. You need to add 'inline references' - to say where the information comes from.
