Re: References for Mai

[edit]

Good references comply with WP:V and WP:R. Each type of article, ie. Video Games, historical, etc, each have a list of certain reliable sites. In the case of Mai, (anime/TV), you'd look at IGN TV, or Nick.com, and even arguable Avatar Spirit. However, for the article to comply with WP:N, it must have multiple references from a variety of different sources. Mai's references come from not only just one source, but they aren't even formatted properly per WP:CITE. I hope that helped. :) I haven't the time to clean up the article for you, though.--haha169 (talk) 00:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My bad - I was talking about Ty Lee. Mai needs references. It has none - so I put the tag there. --haha169 (talk) 00:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add content without citing verifiable and reliable sources, as you did to Pittsburgh. Before making any potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. OhNoitsJamie Talk 00:43, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

San Diego climate

[edit]

Hello G.Capo, nice to meet you. San Diego is quite unique in that it straddles the two climatic zones CSa-BSh (look at the map referred here), but it really does lean towards the semi-arid (BS) if you use Koeppen's system. Because the Pacific ocean systems moderate the temperatures, making it very pleasant year-round, most people mistake it for a Mediterranean climate. Also, some issues regarding Koeppen's CS category... (1) SD's geographical area straddles these two zones along the coast. This is not the case, further up, in LA, where the shift to BSh occurs inland, away from the coast. Apart from perhaps Casablanca, San Diego is the only major coastal city at this transition zone. (2) Yes, a Mediterranean climate has relatively wet winters and relatively dry summers... but this is not the case with SD. While it receives MOST of its rain in the winter, it amounts to little (~10", which technically makes it almost "desert"). Med climates have significant winter rain. I'm sure there are zones with microclimates that lean either way. (2) The litmus test to determine the assignment of BS vs CS is the PET, which also indicates the agrarian potential of a site without irrigation. Using this, the SD area is BS. Moving inland it becomes BW. (3) The BS that starts at the coast in San Diego, extends down the Baja until it gives way to true desert (BW)... all along the coast, NOT the interior. This pattern of CS-BS-BW occurs at other coastal locations on the planet- most similarily in Morocco (same latitude and similar ocean systems exerting influence). (4) BH climates are NOT always hot, nor are they cold. Negative evaporation can occur without extreme heat.

I think the SD article needs to reflect San Diego's climatic uniqueness, and to say it has a "Mediterranean" climate, or even an "arid Med" climate, is incorrect. It's in an area of progression- a continuum from one zone to another- so it cannot be clear cut. I'd like to reword the section on climate to reflect this, if you concur... perhaps a little less biased to BS than I had it. What do you think? Climate categories for Mexican locations

[edit]

Hi! I saw your comment on the Guadalajara article. I work mostly on Mexican geography articles. Many times I either do not find any climate categorization info or that info is in Spanish, and I have not found a way to translate this jargon. I would love to find a way to get the Köppen climate classification... either a detailed map for Mexico or a site that gives the classifications when you pop in the name of the locations. Are you aware of any sources that can help me?Thelmadatter (talk) 22:39, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Climate Description

[edit]

Thanks for the feedback. I would like to clear this up: when I say "continental semi-arid climate", this is in contrast to places such as Argentine Patagonia, where a semi-arid climate prevails, but said climate is not continental, looking at the thermal regime and humidity levels. "Semi-arid steppe climate" is indeed redundant, I agree with you here. My describing Edmonton as "semi-arid" was a mistype; I meant semi-humid. As for Calgary, it is not deemed to be semi-arid according to the Koppen system, but its annual precipitation is close to the threshold given by the system, and I think that a broader interpretation of what is a "semi-arid" climate than that of the Koppen system, one that includes areas such as that which Calgary is in, is legitimate so long as one recognises that the prevailing climate system does not classify these regions as such.

Climate

[edit]

I know there has been some controversy for the climate classification of Edmonton and Calgary. I am just wondering from your perspective (since you seem to know a lot more than me on this subject) what would you classify the two cities as? Thanks Kyle1278 03:59, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese cities

[edit]

Tianjin

[edit]

Should we go by the strict mathematical mean of the 1971-2000 data ([1.8 + (-7.5)] / 2 = -2.85 °C), or by what the CMA says (-3.5 °C), which is the observed mean (i.e. integral of the temperature of the 24-hour period divided by 24). I am Chinese, and can use Chinese-language sources up to a certain level, and the third column of the temperature data, "累年各月平均气温", literally means 'accumulated annual every month average temperature', as opposed to the two columns to its left, which include the characters '最高' and '最低' before '气温', specifying the average high and low. The 0.6 °C difference is small, but according to criteria, highly . However, from an arithmetical (which is all I really care about w.r.t. climate) and practical aspect, I think the station cheats because of the mere 0.15 °C that award it a warmer climate classification; moreover, it is probably located in the city centre, and since the borders of Tianjin extend to the coast as well as further inland, there might be a few locations that are respectively more solidly Cwa or Dwa. But does a 0.15 °C difference really physically matter as long as the difference is far from the freezing point? I say not. 华钢琴49 (TALK) 04:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Xi'an

[edit]

Since most of your work is related to semi-arid climate classification, would you consider Xi'an to be cold or warm/hot semi-arid? according to the infobox in the article: January averages 0.5 °C (32.9 °F), July 27.0 °C (80.6 °F), annual average 14.3 °C (57.7 °F), and annual precipitation 553 millimetres (21.8 in). --- 华钢琴49 (TALK) 13:32, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ürümqi

[edit]

Sorry for the continued bothering/'spam', but my questions are actually this uncertain.
Did calculations as follows:

  • APR-SEP precip: 187.3 millimetres (7.37 in)
  • Annual precip: 286.2 millimetres (11.27 in)
  • APR-SEP percentage: 65.44%, thus a little short of 70%
  • Annual temperature: 7.38 °C (45.3 °F)
  • Semi-arid threshold: 7.38 * 20 + 140 = 287.6 millimetres (11.32 in)

Based on those calculations, Ürümqi is barely falls within the semi-arid calculation and is thus borderline. However, according to maps, this makes it somewhat of an oasis within a large semi-arid/arid region. Furthermore, given that the percentage is just short of 70%, the true threshold must be much higher than 288 mm, I say. From a linear calculation standpoint, 264.0 mm should be the number added, not 140 (the threshold is now 412 mm instead of 288). This is similar to the rule that many policeman follow: if you are only 1 km/h or 1 mph above the posted speed limit, he is not likely to ticket you. ---华钢琴49 (TALK) 00:31, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oceanic climate article slimmed down again

[edit]

I removed the notable cities section as there was no supporting referencing. The gallery was again removed per wikipedia standards. I'm one of few editors within the meteorology project who is making improvements to articles within it, and willing to take them into and through the GAN process. This is why I keep restructuring the article to conform with wikipedia standards...one day it might get into good enough shape to become a good article. FYI. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:31, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Because the city list constitutes original research (another wikipedia no-no) without supporting inline references. If the other Koppen pages have been constructed in this manner, then either referencing needs to be added, or those lists will need to be eliminated as well. As it stands, wikipedia standards favor prose over lists anyhow. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:30, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear G. Capo: Thank you for your contribution to the climate section at Nantucket. It would be very helpful, if you could provide one or more references for that contribution. Thank you for your post at my talk page, citing the Köppen climate classification (KCC) as the method used. We're on our way to a suitable citation for your entry. Is there a map with a weblink or some other citable source that you can suggest? E.g. does the Peel, M. C. and Finlayson, B. L. and McMahon, T. A. (2007) citation in the KCC article support what you contributed? If so we could use that. I note that the Wikipedia article on the KCC system is also unsourced in several sections—a WP "no-no"! Let's continue the conversation at the Talk:Nantucket#Climate section discussion. Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 16:09, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just wanted to say that I'm not trying to step on you or something. I just really don't think that's a good representative picture (being accurate only to Book 4), and also, it's tiny - it doesn't really enlarge any, which is a bit of a minus. So that's where I'm coming from. BUT! I'm not trying to kick it out - I tagged you on purpose on the fair use orphaning, so you'd know. And now knowing that you really want it in there, I've added more to the caption (for context) and adjusted the position (to make it more illustrative of Book 4, from which it came) with the intent to make having both photos in the article supportable as fair use. I hope that works for you. Solarbird (talk) 07:59, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Average record highs and lows

[edit]

Hi! I reverted your edits removing average record highs and lows from Template:Weather box/doc, because this is a feature of the template, and needs to be described in the documentation. The concept may be confusing, but the statistic is present in the NOAA's weather records, and the statistic of average yearly minimum is used to determine USDA hardiness zones for plants, so it is worth including in some cases. It also describes the absolute range of temperature that can be expected in a given month or year. — Eru·tuon 22:38, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see where they themselves even claim to be a magazine. Their website and social media profiles state they are a private blog. Per MOS:TV: "Be careful when searching for reviews, and make sure they are coming from professional reviewers, and not simply a fan of the series." Are non-notable private bloggers really professional reviewers? Bennv3771 (talk) 15:14, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Even though I don't agree with the source..."

[edit]

FYI, agreeing or disagreeing with a source is not grounds for including or removing content on Wikipedia. There is no need to include edit summaries telling others whether or not you personally agree with cited sources... it doesn't (or at least it shouldn't) matter. Bennv3771 (talk) 10:41, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I removed the second sentence initially because it is just a paraphrase of the author's point which was already made in the author's quote. I don't see the point in quoting the author, then paraphrasing the same point made by the same author immediately after. Either quote him directly or paraphrase his point, no need for unnecessary repetition with both. Given WP:QUOTEFARM, it's best to just paraphrase the author's criticism of the relationship between Korra and Asami (which boils down to lack of foreshadowing) in our own words. Notice

The file File:Lin & Suyin in Toph's office.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free screenshot being used in a WP:DECORATIVE manner in Lin Beifong#Book Four: Balance. There is already a non-free screenshot of the character being used in the main infobox for primary indentification purposes, so another one is not needed for that per WP:NFCC#3a. While a non-free screenshot might be allowed if necessary to illustrate a particular technique or other aspect about the animation style used for the character, etc., it's not really allowed just to illustrate a "plot point" about the character per MOS:TV#Images or WP:FILMNFI. There's no critical commentary on the screenshot itself, so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking; a non-free screenshot is not needed to show a character in its "younger years" unless there is sourced critical commentary describing the change in the character's appearance over the years. Finally, using a non-free image just to "show" the character has a relationship with another character or is not really going to meet WP:NFCC#1 since that plot element can more than easily be understand using only simple text.

Notice

The file File:Mako & Bolin's family Portrait.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free image being used in a WP:DECORATIVE manner in Mako (The Legend of Korra)#Book Three: Change. There is already a non-free screenshot of the character being used in the main infobox for primary indentification purposes, so another one is not needed for that per WP:NFCC#3a. While a non-free image might be allowed if necessary to illustrate a particular technique or other aspect about the animation style used for the character, etc., it's not really allowed just to illustrate a "plot point" about the character per MOS:TV#Images or WP:FILMNFI. There's no critical commentary on the image itself, so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is lacking; a non-free image is not needed to show a character in a "family portrait" per WP:NFCC#1 since that plot element can more than easily be understand using only simple text.

Removal of properly sourced information

[edit]

Please stop removing properly sourced information from the Voltron Legendary Defender article. It is clear that you are allowing your bias to negatively impact the quality of the content. Please be aware that just because you dislike stated facts does not mean that they are not factual. Jesip lunati (talk) 06:17, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The user Fradio71 is involved with repeated edit warring on the Voltron page. Please feel free to leave a report on this individual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Edit_warring Liqunaei (talk) 07:44, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It was in regards to the anti faction of the fandom, which has perpetrated most of, if not all, of the violence. I had the information sourced and then it disappeared. It seems that it was someone else who may have removed the details and information. It looks like it was Fradio71?

Either way, I hope to continue working with you in the future with constructive future edits. Jesip lunati (talk) 05:49, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Differences between true equatorial climates and other tropical rainforest climates

[edit]

Hello,

I reverted in part your edit because I think it is important to clearly describe what true equatorial climates are. You can see details in the talk page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Tropical_rainforest_climate#Many_tropical_rainforest_climates_AREN%27T_equatorial_climates).

Many notable cities selected as examples haven't an equatorial climate but, to be short, a "trade-wind" climate or a "cyclone" climate (moreover, very often "trade-wind" climates are "cyclone" climates and vice versa, one notable exception being for instance the eastern coast of Brazil where trade winds are predominant while you almost don't have any cyclones (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Atlantic_tropical_cyclone)).

In true equatorial climates, a) the ZCIT is predominant, not the trade winds and b) there is no cyclone.

Consequently in equatorial climates, you don't have much wind (think of the sailor's doldrums) contrary to trade-wind climates which are windy : this is the main climatic difference.

In trade-wind climates, the diversity of the forests are poorer than in equatorial-ZCIT zones because they have to struggle against constant wind which is not the case in the Congo or Amazon basin.

Among the selected cities you have for instance Moroni (Comoros), Port Antonio (Jamaica), West Palm Beach (United States), Suva (Fiji). All these cities have trade winds most of the year which means these cities are windy. Orchid Island (Taiwan) is a little different because the ZCIT is more present than in the other mentioned cities. However in all these cities cyclones are frequent or not rare. Therefore the climate is not equatorial in these cities.

In Davao City (Philippines), Polomolok (Philippines), Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (Sri Lanka), Tarawa (Kiribati), the ZCIT is often present therefore the climate isn't a trade-wind climate.

Cyclones are also rare in these regions however they are not unknown. In Sri Lanka you have some cyclones but there are not frequent. For instance Fani storm, a few days ago, began to hit Sri Lanka (though the storm was probably not yet a cyclone when it passed over Sri Lanka) before becoming a cyclone which struck Eastern India, Bangladesh and Burma.

So Davao City (Philippines), Polomolok (Philippines), Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (Sri Lanka), Tarawa (Kiribati) aren't true equatorial climates because cyclones aren't unknown there while in the Congo basin you haven't had any little single cyclone in meteorology history.

In the "Notable cities" part, I indicated all the cities of which I am sure they have an equatorial climate or a subequatorial climate.

When there is no "equatorial climate" or "subequatorial climate" indication then

either the climate is a trade-wind climate (as in Fort Lauderdale, United States)

or I am not sure about the main aerological mechanism as in Kampala (Uganda). I don't know if the ZCIT is predominant over the (continentalized) maritime trade winds in the Kampala region.

Humid Subtropical Climate

[edit]

Change the content, wording, references, whatever. I don't care, but why did you remove ALL of the conversions?? 216.163.247.3 (talk) 17:02, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I didn't fully realize what I did. I’ll restore the conversions you worked hard to include in the article. There’s been a long-running feud with at least one user, who continually changes info because he/she feels a certain way, not because of the actual weather data. Worse, the user deletes valid sources that doesn't fit his/her view. G. Capo (talk) 17:14, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I'm not entirely sure I did them all right, so feel free to improve/fix any mistakes I made. 216.163.247.3 (talk) 19:25, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical rainforest climate ≠ Equatorial climate

[edit]

Hello,

often tropical rainforest climate and equatorial climate are confused. Tropical rainforest climates are mainly MAM2 or AM2 climates according to Marcel Leroux, French climatologist.

MAM2 and AM2 describe the aerological mechanisms that dominate these climates. The first "M" in MAM2 means "Monsoon" but Monsoon as equivalent of ZITC. AM2 means "Alizé maritime de type 2" (Trade wind of type 2, type 2 meaning the equatorward branch of a trade wind). So MAM2 climates are climates with the alternation "M" and "AM2" that is the alternation of the ZITC ("M") and the trade winds ("AM2") with the ZITC aerological mechanism being dominant. The AM2 climates are climates where the trade winds are dominant and the ZITC minor. Most of the MAM2 climates are found near the equator (Pontianak) while the AM2 climates are usually found at higher latitudes (Santos).

The great difference between MAM2 climates and AM2 climates is that in the former climates there is usually no or rare wind due to the ZITC (doldrums, "pot-au-noir") while in the AM2 climates you have frequent wind (trade wind).

Generally cyclones occur in the AM2 climates but may also be present in some MAM2 climates.

All true equatorial climates are MAM2 climates with no cyclone. All equatorial climates are tropical rainforest climates.

Subequatorial climates are degraded equatorial climates. All true subequatorial climates are MAM2 climates as the equatorial climates.

The difference between subequatorial climates and equatorial climates are either a short dry season (1 to 3 months) or the presence of rare cyclones in the former climates.

In the case of a short dry season, the subequatorial climate is not a tropical rainforest climate but an Aw climate (Tropical monsoon climate) or even an Aw/As—Tropical savanna climate under Köppen classification.

But in the case of no dry season but in presence of rare cyclones, the subequatorial climate is an Af climate (tropical rainforest climate) because there is no dry season. However this is not a true equatorial climate since there are a few cyclones.

A great part of the tropical rainforest climates aren't equatorial climates

but either (1) tropical humid trade-wind climates (with or without cyclones)

or (2) tropical "MAM2" climates with frequent cyclones

or (3) subequatorial climates with no dry season but with rare cyclones.

Among the case (3) were the examples of locations for which I added (subequatorial climate) : Davao City, Philippines / Polomolok, Philippines / Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, Sri Lanka / Tarawa, Kiribati. These cities have an Af tropical rainforest climate but rare cyclones may occur there so the climate is not a true equatorial climate but "only" a subequatorial climate.

Cayenne (French Guyana) is an example of subequatorial climate not being tropical rainforest climate but tropical monsoon climate (Aw) because there is a short dry season so must not be included in the list of "Notable cities with Tropical rain forest climates".

In conclusion I will put again the mention "(subequatorial climate)" next to the few examples cited above.

When the mention "(equatorial climate)" is noted it means that the climate is Af equatorial,

when the mention "(subequatorial climate)" is noted it means that the climate is Af subequatorial

and when there is no mention it means that the climate is Af but neither equatorial nor subequatorial.

In the last case you can pick up Majuro (Marshall Islands) which is Af but with many cyclones (so neither equatorial nor even subequatorial) or Hilo (United States) which is also Af but once again not (sub-)equatorial because under the trade wind aerological mechanism AM2 during most of the year.

One last word : I explained all that in the talk page of the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Tropical_rainforest_climate#Many_tropical_rainforest_climates_AREN'T_equatorial_climates

Honduras200010 edits

[edit]

Hi G. Capo, I wonder if you could help with something maybe? The editor formerly known as Honduras200010 (talk · contribs) and their sockpuppets seem to have made a lot of disruptive edits about climate topics. I noticed your name in several of the articles I was checking, and that you had already reverted some of their edits. If you have time, maybe you could help with fixing and cleaning up things they broke? They are indefinitely blocked since 18 June for disruptive editing and sock puppetry. Their socks are Lasolitudineitaly (talk · contribs), as well as (pending confirmation at the sockpuppet investigation) Noncheitaly (talk · contribs) and most or all of the edits from the IP range 190.92.62.192/26. For example, there is this edit: [3], which I think could be removed as block evasion, but it's hard for me to tell what the changes mean, and I don't want to revert to an older version if the old numbers are incorrect. Anyway, it's up to you if you want to take a look, I thought I'd let you know about it. Thanks... --IamNotU (talk) 03:45, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IamNotU. I'll see what I can do concerning changes to the climate info. I've been pretty busy lately G. Capo (talk) 20:38, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
