{{helpme}} Need advice: Private wiki or Wikipedia?

I'm creating an industry collaboration site with software that provides weak wiki support. While people will pay a subscription to access some services on the site, the wiki portion will be free to all. I'm trying to decide whether to use the software and keep the wiki private or use Wikipedia instead. As far as I can tell, the considerations include:

1. Wikipedia is more robust and visible to more people. 2. A private wiki can be less formal; fewer requirements when posting content. 3. On a private site, search will search the wiki and other site content at the same time.

Are there other considerations?

I saw information on how to include a Wikipedia search box on my site. Is it possible to modify the code to restrict the Wikipedia search to a specific Portal? I'm considering creating an industry-related Portal on Wikipedia and referring people from my site there for their wiki needs. However, when they perform a search on my site, I would like the search to search the Wikipedia Portal and my site content simultaneously.

I appreciate any advice you can offer along these lines.

Thank you very much, Gaboy (talk) 17:36, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't exactly know what you are saying. You cannot run your own wiki on Wikipedia, but can use the MediaWiki software (see [1]). I know searchs can be restricted to the Portal namespace, but not a specific portal. You may be able to do this on google. If there is anything else, leave a message. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: You certainly seem respectable, and I'm hesitant to do this, so could you please offer your reasons for choosing this name below the relevant entry at WP:UAA, as it appears to be a misspelling of gay boy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Dendoge, I'm changing it. I went through lots of different names that were taken before trying an abbreviation of 'Georgia Boy'; i.e., gaboy. Later, I wondered if others might think what you stated. Thanks for providing the link to change it. I'm new to Wikipedia and am not hip to all the rules, processes, and features.
