Uh, did you even read the article?

1. The page is 25,690 bytes, five times its stub state
2. Expansion is for words, not bytes; we can't punish existing stubs for having a reference and an infobox.
3. The hook was already verified by BuddingJournalist, who's a DYK/FAC regular
4. All three hooks are cited: #1 to ref #2, #2 to #12, #3 to #9.

Sorry, Sceptre, but I agree with Gatoclass's comments re expansion, even if I don't necessarily agree with Gatoclass re the sources (I've seen the episode, but haven't got round to watching the "Confidential" or listening to the BBC podcast, but I'm happy that those sources and the Radio Times are reliable). Measurement isn't from its initial stub state, but from the size of the article in characters before the work done to the article to expand it that leads to its nomination at DYK. Now, as it was nominated for having been expanded on 6th April, I looked at the 5th April state, and it's not a stub then. From that state until the current state is about a 3.5 expansion. of the text. Gatoclass's figures and mine are close enough on the character count, and it's not a 5x expansion. Besides, infoboxes and references are discounted in the length criteria, and there's a good reason for that: references take up about 25-50% of the characters in an article. Sceptre ^(talk) 00:17, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

DYK counts characters, not words. I agree that infoboxes and references are not included, and I'm not counting them. As you nominated it under "Articles created/expanded on April 6", I was looking at the count from the last edit before April 6 onwards, and Gatoclass may have been doing the same. However, I take your point about having started your expansion work on April 5 (the edit history is so messy that it's not easy to follow what exactly was happening in terms of bona fide improvements) and I'd agree that if you take it from the diff you've given (which is the state of the article before your first edit on 5 April) we do have a sufficient expansion. I'd also agree that standing on ceremony for the sake of a day isn't productive. I'll pop back to T:TDYK and clarify my views. Bencherlite^Talk 00:40, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

I've been wondering for several months if you should be nominated to become an admin. You do so much for DYK Next Update, and your having the tools would be very helpful and beneficial to the project (Wikipedia). Apparently I'm not the only person to notice this. Do you have any major skeleton's in your closet that we should be concerned about which would hold you up from becoming an admin? You can respond to me on my email if you want to discuss them off-wiki (if there are any concerns). I call nominator or co-nominator if this works out and if you are interested. I, too, was surprised when I realised that you didn't have the mop and would happily welcome you aboard. From looking at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Gatoclass, it looks as though things got off to an unexpected start and then went off the rails slightly, but not for anything that would prevent a second run before your self-imposed 6 month delay. Waiting 6 months after that RFA is a very sensible and responsible response. Let's talk on around May 10 when the self-imposed time limit is up so Bencherlite and I can prepare our co-nominations. Kurt always objects to self-noms, so that wouldn't be an issue for you this time around. Your comments in that RFA about blocking for discipline reasons still would generate oppose votes, even though that might happen sometimes, so you should reconsider that position. There's no way for you to prove or disprove that your thought on the matter has changed since you can't block. I know where you're coming from and your word choice was poor. What you really mean is to preserve the integrity of the encyclopedia. People love to throw out a question about blocks because it's usually answered wrong or poorly. Traditional Chinese histories

I don't think they can/should be considered primary sources. Under WP:PSTS, primary sources "are sources very close to the origin of a particular topic," which these are not. For example, the Book of Tang was written during the Later Jin Dynasty (Five Dynasties), which meant that the events described were already at least 30 years old, and some were over 300 years old, by that point. The New Book of Tang, written during the Song Dynasty, was even more remote from the events. Some of the primary sources that were used to compile these histories are still extant, and some are not, but these histories themselves cannot be considered primary. --Nlu (talk) 06:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the update on DYK. I didn't realize that the appropriate date was the start of the expansion, not the end. I also didn't realize it had been a DYK before. I just noticed it was the last Kentucky governor article eligible for DYK expansion (by length, anyway), and since I have access to a few good Kentucky governor books, I just went for it. Hi, you mentioned on the DYK page that the article does not qualify to be a DYK candidate because it contains a summary of existing articles. I'd like to point out that currently there's only one other article that it is a precis of. (nitpick, it's not the catering department, it's a catering company.) Originally, I listed the primary source from the official site (refence 10 from the page), but if that is not acceptable, I've added a few more sources from the local papers (references 8 and 9). My recent DYK (minor)

I hate to be a bother, and I am not making an issue of this, but I can't understand why you altered the suggested hook for Militia of Jesus Christ. "...that the chief purpose of the military order the Militia of Jesus Christ was to combat heresy?" sounds completely uninteresting to me. There have been many entities devoted to combatting the heresies of some given orthodoxy, why is it notable that the Militia of Jesus Christ had this purpose? I don't think it is. Further, I find "the military order the Militia of" to be a little jarring. Can I ask why it is not interesting that an order of knights wore the garb of an order of friars? Thank you for interceding. Obviously we all make mistakes... my real worry was that I couldn't find anyone to admit their error. I'm guessing I have now ... I'm not sure we can ever make sure that everyone knows about these - I'm willing to take the risk, but I do find it surprising that someone picked the image filename out of a pile of imagemap numbers and then deleted the numbers as if they were random math. As I say ... its OK and thank you for helping. When you do apply for adminship do point out that some admins choose for you to speak for them. Its a compliment to your skills. Easter parade (cultural event)

I saw your comments, and had some discussion with User:Art LaPella about them. The source DOES say that Jesus' walks are seen as the predecessors of the various Easter meanderings. (I'm going to double check exactly what it says, but I've got to get the book back from the library first.) I was kind of taken aback by it at first, but it DOES seem that people have been doing Easter walks for a long time, and in a lot of contexts. We changed a "parade" to a "procession" in one place, and IMHO that improves things quite a bit. I'd be interested in what you think.

I urge you to create a committed identity like I have on my user page. It's designed to aid in the case of your account being compromised. Here's a good one that I used. SHA-512 is a good idea since the high number of bits and repetitions in the algorithm makes it nearly impossible to calculate backwards. It's a good thing for an admin-hopeful! Lakewood Speedway

A score card is a piece of paper where someone (usually an official) keeps track of the score (game) in a game (like a Box score (baseball) in baseball). So in auto racing, they would keep track of how many laps that a driver completed by recording the time that the driver completed a lap. It has been replaced by transponders in everything from international touring series down to some local tracks. Some local tracks still use score cards. I responded here and I can fix the article with the "dissent" against Milton's authorship, and I have six critical works "proving" Milton's authorship along with three modern publications that label it as "Milton's" vs. the one major work that puts it into doubt. I wanted to note - when you talk about theological or political works, you always use the author's name. It is rare that people refer to the work itself, because it is the author who puts the authority into the words. Paper never says anything, either character, a narrator, or an author speaks. But the sources don't say "the document says it", the sources say "Milton says __ in the document". There is a difference between the two, and removing Milton from usage in the sources listed is OR synthesis and a negation of NPOV, because all sources must be represented as they are. Hence the direct quote: "Milton may be quite correctly called an Arian if he holds an anti-Trinitarian view of God; and it is in this sense that scholars have been calling Milton an Arian since the publication of the De Doctrina in 1825."[26] It would be silly to start mixing "Milton says" along with "The manuscript says". I added two more lines to the article based on the premise of a 240 page work that explores every possible problem with the manuscript and certifies beyond a doubt why most scholars agree that it is Milton's work. I can expand on what this work says with direct quotes if you think that authorship deserves its own section, since a lot of criticism has been put in to explain why Milton is the author (substantially more compared to the material produced to deny his authorship). Actually, the rediscovery is mentioned twice: "De doctrina Christiana (Christian Doctrine) is a Latin manuscript found in 1823 and is commonly attributed to John Milton. " and "The only manuscript of Christian Doctrine was found in London's Old State Paper Office.[4] The work was one of many in a bundle of state papers written by John Milton while he served as Secretary of Foreign Tongues under Oliver Cromwell. The manuscript was provided with an prefatory epistle that explains the background and history to the formation of the work. If it is correct, the manuscript is the same work refered to in Milton's Commonplace Book and to an account by Edward Phillips, Milton's nephew, of a theological "tracate".[4]" This was followed up with "In 1675, Skinner attempted to publish the work in Amsterdam, but it was rejected, and in 1677 he was pressured by the English government to hand over the document where it was then hidden.[6]" If this isn't clear, I added "1823" to the second mention of the discovery. But the publication wasn't the big thing. It was the fact that the work was completely hidden by the government that is at issue. Even if the work wasn't published, the work would still prove that Milton is an Arian, which reidentifies the Christianity in works like Paradise Lost. Regardless, I reworded the DYK statement to say: "that De doctrina Christiana is identified as John Milton's attempt to define his own particular Christian theology and was lost until its rediscovery 148 years after Milton died?" One common error that newbie admins make with updating DYK is to forget to upload a temporary Commons image to the English Wikipedia. You don't need to protect it, despite what others think, because it gets cascading protection by being on the main page. I never apply protection; I just apply the {{C-uploaded}} template. Woodhouse Grove School

I have noted your ‘Reads like an ad’ tag at Woodhouse Grove School and have started work on a cleanup but have started to struggle to make any further alterations without decimating the article. Could I lean on your broader and deeper editing experience for help?

Firstly I wanted to assure you that there are no ulterior motives in the article. I have no connection whatsoever with the school, I just have a general interest in British school institutions and have also edited several other schools with which I have no personal connection eg Skegness Grammar School and King Edward VI Humanities College which I consider to be far inferior to the Woodhouse article.

I was browsing in a local Boston book fair and bought a moth eaten second hand copy of the book “The story of Woodhouse Grove” for 75 pence, looked up the school’s rather sad little stub on wiki and set about expanding it. I am a new wiki editor with only a couple of month’s experience – filling in my retirement time after three strokes – another editor waxed lyrical about my expanded Woodhouse entry and suggested I put it forward for the “Did you know” section.

All of the “reads like an ad” info and comments in the article have come from third party sites unconnected with the school, mostly the Independant Schools Council and OFSTED reports by government officials. There is no personal POV stuff of mine in there.

I assume the section you have most problem with is the “School Today” parts, but it does seem to match similar sections for many British schools in content and coverage. What else needs to be changed and how? 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 11:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Spam multi-level pyramid found, but need more help

I did some investigating and found a consirable spamming campaign done by a ring of accounts all working for the benefit of a ring of companies that look legitimate such as...

hxxp://www.childhealth.co.uk/ hxxp://www.constipationadvice.co.uk/

and about a dozen more, all popping up under the "external links" of every wikipedia page that someone one go to for looking up a remedy. I spent a lot of time, reviewing the edits of one particular user, but found that earlier revisions (like 6 months before) were also doing the same thing, then disappearing.

The conclusion of my digging was that hxxp://www.alchemyinteractive.co.uk/ and hxxp://www.webheads.co.uk/ are just two of a group of 10 or more domains that are involved in account manipulations (create an account, do 4-5 harmless edits to disguise their intentions) then spam a lot of the wikipedia pages, then disappear.

I was very lucky to discover that alchemyinteractive and webheads are related, or else I wouldn't have been able to connect them. I read on another talk page that you handle this kind of stuff, or know who to turn it over to. These two companies have phone numbers and when I googled them, several online websites ("web design and online promotion companies") are all puppet websites but none of them ultimately say who the parent company is that operates them all (and for good reason--it would make it too easy for wikipedia admins to stop them).

So hopefully you know the admin who knows the admin who can put my information to good use and make wikipedia's anti-spam bots and techncicians stronger and more effective. I'd call the company myself and tell them to stop, but I live in the states and a call to London or a black-fax would cost me too much $ and I'm broke.

P.S. Those "legitimate sounding companies" make you register for a "free leaflet by email" and even if someone doesn't give out their email, their cookies are VERY unkosher and they spam you with lots of seemingly good information and they try to emulate webmd.com except not run by doctors, and they are only seeking traffic, and conversion ratios. I only felt like doing this because I came to WP looking for info on an earache, and then remembered seeing similar spam that I faintly remembered from a year ago (and digging discovered different accounts one linking to alchemyinteractive and one linking to webheads, and thanks to google, I tied those companies together, thus leading to the deduction that it would be more effecient to just keep an eye on that unknown parent company of the two, because its impossible to connect all their spamming unless we know every online-promotion-company under the parent company's control). I wish I knew who to directly give this information to, but I'm not as well networked here on WP as you are. How about if we remove "reportedly" but also remove "very" before the word "similar" in the hook? I think this is fine because we have not one but in fact multiple independent WP:RS/WP:V sources that compare the two stories. Otherwise, I would rather change it to "has been compared to...". Estherwood DYK

Thanks for the compliment on the pic, although I wish it could have been better. It was late that day, it was cloudy and cold and photographing a grayish structure against a cloudy sky gets you a bit of flare from the almost-blown highlight behind it. Taken in sunny weather, midday, with a blue sky behind it it would have been different.

The Irving memorial photo included is actually one someone else took ... mine is the one in the article infobox that shows the whole thing.

Mentioned it earlier than what? How? Do any of you realize how difficult it is to find where to put a notice for what is wrong on the main page? I spent my first month on Wikipedia trying to figure out how to tell people that their articles were wrong, usually just using the article's talk page. Articles were never pulled from DYK no matter what was wrong with them, and facts were seldom checked. I mentioned this as soon as I read it. I figured someone would challenge me, is anything wrong with DYK right now, so I went and read one, and the first one I read was plagiarized. When you are genuinely concerned about civility, try not to include threats in the post. Just one last point to be clear: you threatened me for finding plagiarisms, and that was the threat: you would and will accuse me of anything in order to stop my pointing out the dreadful state of this project. You don't want to hear it, or know it. You would rather spend your time and efforts finding something against me than working to find the plagiarisms. I'm not leaving because I'm worried about an incivility accusations, what could be more incivil then be found guilty of claiming another's work as your own and then passing out rewards for it? I'm leaving because Wikipedia honors copying from others and claiming it as Wikipedia's own.

I just found out about the Triple Crown award. I told you there was a reward for DYK. It's very obvious to an outsider that this is the result of a frantic contest, a quest for prizes, not quality. Do you want to guess how many plagiarisms I found in Triple Crown Award winners so far? And, interesting enough, not just in DYKs. a couple in GAs. So, at least you're in good company on Wikipedia.

You don't need software to find plagiarisms, you need English language reading skills and familiarity with encyclopedias. I write lay articles on technical subjects for a living. I read encyclopedia articles and similar articles in journals and books that are on technical subjects for a general audience as part of my job. After the first dozen or more DYK plagiarisms that I spotted, I just started picking them out, left and right. The first ones I found I knew instantly they were plagiarized. I only found two articles that I didn't think had plagiarisms in them, and these in the last 24-48 hours, and they both held up to a quick scrutiny. Every other article I reviewed may have taken some time, but it wasn't really that hard. Just time to find where the lines were copied and pasted from. It's so obvious anyone who spent any time learning the skill of writing can find them. And, you have some more waiting in the queue.

It's not a threat of my incivility, it's a threat to me that if I keep bringing up the problems I will be banned--effectively that is a ban, because I can write, and I find it disgusting that someone would take the work of another, claim it as their own, then show it off for a cyberspace reward to their assumed name.

Now, deal with your problem, instead of hounding users who are willing to leave when you have to threaten them to get rid of them. If I'm not here, you don't have to bother with me, anymore, to explain the obvious: your time can be spent finding the plagiarisms.

Civility versus intellectual honesty

Gatoclass, could you go a bit easier on Blechnic? This editor got a very rough start, and it obviously still rankles. From what I have seen, the positive aspects of the contributions far outweigh the negative aspects of the tone and style. We need more people like Blechnic, pointing out things like plagiarism and making sometimes harsh criticisms when they are needed, not less. The civility aspects can be addressed, but it is far harder to educate people who routinely plagiarise. I am currently compiling a list of the positive contributions Blechnic made, and I may start a request for comments over what happened here. It is unacceptable that people feel unable to contribute to Wikipedia because they get attacked for incivility when they should instead be calmed down and thanked for what they have pointed out. Competence is required here, not just civility. Too much emphasis on civility brings standards down. I had great hopes for Blechnic's contributions to plant articles. Before I get too upset, would you consider posting something to Blechnic's talk page to show that you want Blechnic to stay, thus showing that you didn't mean your comment to be a self-fulfilling prophecy? As for the "unattributed statements", everything in that article is attributed to a source. The plagiarism claims are false, but one may question why the same names of organizations Mrs. Jorgensen served on that appear in the main source similarly appear in the Wikipedia article; I cannot make up an organization, thus they will match what those in the source said. Holodomor/famine

Hello,

I'm sure that you are familiar with the touchy nature of this topic at this time - there is intense debate going on all over the world among scholars, especially with respect to proving the Holodomor as a genocide. The reason I labeled all of the sources as dubious is that they are ALL Russian sources, and not scholarly sources, but appear to be on-line newspapers. In such an article, these sources are indeed dubious, especially because (and I may be assuming a lot here) most regular English WP users would not be able to follow up on them.
