DYK questions

Howdy Gatoclass, I've admired your sterling contribs at DYK for a long time - great job. Since receiving my own mop recently, I'd like to learn the ropes and help out with updates at DYK. You are Numero Uno on my list of people-I-oughta-learn-DYKin'-off've. So, a couple of postgrad questions for you. 1. I wouldn't add my own hooks to an update, obviously, but what is the best practice for dealing with hooks that you have personally reviewed? Can you add these to an update or best to leave them for another admin? 2. When there is a traffic jam of unreviewed/debated hooks at the bottom of the page (like now) it is appropriate to personally review/decide on the appropriateness of each hook to clear out the snarl and then add them to the queue? Horizontal return connecting rod engine? + Thanks

Thanks for creating the article on marine steam engines as well as the DYK article on SS Baltic (1850) which led me to find the previous. I wonder if you could help me with this promblem: In the article Uragan class monitor I wrote the the ships had a "horizontal return connecting rod engine, type Humphreys" This I infered from the Russian language sources I used as well as from articles on Miantonomoh class monitors, that seem to have a similar engine. Do you have any idea what this "horizontal return connecting rod" could be? Could it be a walking beam or a side-lever?

Also, can you figure out who the Humphreys is? Joshua Humphreys? ...or son Samuel Humphreys? ...or grandson, General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys? -- Petri Krohn (talk) 12:58, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't help you with that one, have you tried asking the guys who maintain the steam engine page?

The Passaics are listed as having vibrating lever engines but the Russians may have used an entirely different powerplant. "Humphries" might have been a British mechanic, I doubt any of the Humphries you mention were responsible for the engine type you mention. Gatoclass (talk) 13:14, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

After reading you article, I can see that a horizontal return connecting rod engine is something covered in Marine steam engine#Vertical, horizontal, inclined, inverted. I haven't been able to find out much about vibrating lever engines. Apparently they were an experimental type of engine that were only in use for a short time.

It's only a guess, but I suspect the engines in the Uragans were direct acting. Direct acting engines were the most common type for screw-propelled vessels, especially in Europe. Gatoclass (talk) 13:30, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

I just sort of reworked into the format I use for other HD articles (I could and should probably put together a map from OpenStreetMap as I do for them later, in lieu of a picture (I'm not sure about the copyright status of the B&W ones the state shows at its page, since it's not clear whether they were submitted with the app or not. And in any case they kind of suck. I did not find any free images on Flickr that we could use ... I guess I'll put something in at WP:PMS or ask at WP:PENNA or WP:PHILLY. Bot "skipping" update 5.

This is intentional on my part. Queue 5 was already up when the bot ran again. The bot basically "updated" queue 5 with... queue 5!. (It should have updated with queue 6). I had to manually revert it's double posting to user talk pages etc and tell the bot to try again. Basically as it never completed its run, it never updated /count resulting in it double posting a queue. In short please do not re-run the hooks that were queue 5, that will result in them getting double air time. I have further explanation at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Uh-oh.... Thanks. I'm not in the habit of informing users when their hooks have been challenged and am under no obligation to do so. But since I left a message on the article talk page, you were hardly likely to miss it.

I didn't restore Shubinator's verification from concern that an updater might inadvertently miss the fact that the hook has now been challenged. I will quite often remove a verify tag from a DYK discussion for that very reason, so I can assure you your hook has not been treated any differently. Gatoclass (talk) 04:00, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Of course you're not under any obligation to inform editors of problems with their DYK noms, but it is nice thing to do. As for Shubinator's verification, while your concern might be valid, it does not give you the right to remove another's comment. One editor's comment cannot be removed unless the comment is a gross wp:blp violation or a personal attack, neither of which applies to Shubunator's verification of the DYK hook. It may be a "nice" thing to do, but if I did it for every hook I reviewed at DYK:Suggestions, it would double the amount of time I spent reviewing hooks. I think you will find a note at the top of the Suggestions page informing users that they alone are responsible for checking the status of their hooks to ensure they have not been challenged. I'm afraid DYK reviewers simply don't have the time.

As for Shubinator's verification, I would probably have restored it if he had actually made a comment about it, but IIRC it was nothing but a verify tag, so I saw no point in restoring it. Gatoclass (talk) 04:29, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm sure you are very busy just like everyone else, but a small courtesy note, especially the easy template created by Shubinator, will go a long way in improving this encyclopedia. After all, it is usually the article's creator that is in the best position to correct the problems that were found by the DYK reviewer.

As for Shubinator's verification, I think you should be far more careful in removing anything added by an editor on a non-article page. I would not restore another's comment after he complains about it, but ask him before removing any sort of comment. As I've already explained, I didn't "remove his comment". I simply didn't restore it when I restored the hook from the queue. But since his only comment was "Length, history and reference good" it can scarcely be said to pertain to the current discussion. No-one is arguing that the "length, history [or] references" are not good, the debate is about whether the article is POV and whether the subject warrants a standalone article of its own.

In regards to your comments about notification, as I've said before, I hardly think you can claim you weren't notified when I left a comment on the article talk page. But if you think as a general principle it should be mandatory for reviewers to notify users when their hooks have been challenged, I suggest you open a discussion at the DYK suggestions page. I don't think it should be mandatory to notify article creators' of problems with their DYK's. It's common sense and basic civility. Nobody should have to be told to do it. But it's not important at this point.

I've given you a perfectly good explanation as to why I didn't do so on several occasions now. The fact that you have chosen to ignore that explanation is not my problem. Nor do I appreciate the inference that I lack common sense and am uncivil and a dunderhead who needs to be "told" how to behave. Such inferences could themselves well be considered as unacceptably uncivil. Furthermore, your harping on this point after having been provided several times with an explanation is beginning to look like harassment. You've made your point, I have given you my explanation and suggested a further course of action you might take, there is really nothing more to be said about the issue at this point, so kindly spare me any further repetitions. As for the former comment, I believe you're mistaken. I guess you forgot, but in your original rationale for yanking the article from the DYK queue you stated that the sources do not support the article's claim that the law was called the Palestinian Land Law. Meaning, there were problems with article's references. User:Shubinator, who verified that article, clearly is of the opinion that there are no problems with the article's references. I simply restored the hook from the next update page as that was the most convenient method. I did check the review section prior to doing so, but since Shubinator's comment was no more than a stock approval message with the template, I didn't restore it out of concern that someone would fail to read my following comment and restore the hook to the queue again. I could hardly be expected to anticipate that you would consider the failure to restore a stock verification message such a big deal, but if you really think it so important, as I've said you should ask Shubinator if he stands by his opinion and ask him to restore it, not continue to harp on the subject on my talk page. Which ALT to use in a DYK

Recently I submitted for DYK the article Nebraska House. My original hook was not acceptable and an ALTERNATE hook was submitted with various changes made in the article to accommodate the objections. With many changes made to overcome the many further objections, the ALTERNATE hook was finally acceptable. However, when all was said and done the first hook was the one that was run in DYK. Should there not be some sort of alert to the person that puts it into the queue which hook to select as to the one that has been acceptable to everyone? Should this not then be determined by the administrators that had the objections and made the final agreement which to select; the original, ALT 1, or ALT 2, or ALT 3, etc? Otherwise the work to overcome the objections is all for not, since the objected hook is selected anyway since the person that sets up the queue does not look over the conversation in the DYK submission. Perhaps after the administrator that originally objected to the original hook and FINALLY agreed to everything in the ALTERNATE hook should be the one that puts this acceptable hook into the queue. Good suggestion, since I realize we all make mistakes - especially on such a hectic and busy item as DYK submissions. From what you are saying then the "updater" should have looked at the conversation and then would have been able to determine that it was the ALTERNATE that was the agreed to hook. Admin?

Hi, what do you think of the idea of me becoming an admin? It was suggested last year by User:Epbr123 ((see here) but I didn't feel I was ready then. I'm not 100% sure yet, but am ready to discuss pros and cons at least. One worry I've got is that being an admin would reduce my time available to create/edit articles. What do you think? Thanks for your comments. There's a lot of edit history to go through but feel free. The only major "dispute" I've had was with User:Future Perfect at Sunrise over the picture of SS Empire Galahad that he got deleted. Shortly after this a RFC was raised against that editor. Collaborative spirit and balanced arguments

Heyo Gatoclass,
No offense intended, but it feels as though you lack the time to put a serious effort into the article so you're allowed yourself, in the heat of the moment, to work on it in a bit of a wiki-ninja style instead. The article is in reasonable shape and [almost?] everything in it is well cited so I'm just not following the style of your participation (see participation issues samples). I value your opinion when you do take the time to explore it and I believe your participation could be quite beneficial to the page if you make a better effort at collaborating with the active members. I'm aware this is a bit of a chore as everyone on wiki feels they know best (no offense to the modest people out there) but I'm trying to get a more collaborative spirit going on and I was hoping an experienced editor like yourself would want just that.

• Removing sources and text on (what seems to be) false notes:
  • "Scores of Palestinians have been murdered over the past three decades for allegedly selling their property to Jews"(Jerusalem Post) -> "it's unsupported by any of the cited references"[2]
• Repeated "disputed" and "POV" tags on a reasonable article over minor issues (I'm aware that this is subjective) without asserting your concerns properly and/or working with others to fix them.[3]

What is the meaning of al-Nakba ? The translation is catastrophe or disaster but the meaning ?
I have an equivalent example here : fr:Bloody Sunday. It could be translated in French in "Sanglant Dimanche" but that would not have the same meaning. We also have another equivalent Yom Kippur War/Ramadan War that should the be translated 1973 Arab-Israeli War...

Six hooks per update?

I am worried that having only six per each update might create a nauseating backlog... If you agree I could make it seven per each. --BorgQueen (talk) 09:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Not at all worried about a backlog at this point BQ. There are only 167 hooks on suggestions right now and the queue isn't full, earlier this year we had full queues and 220-240 hooks and we worked our way through them quickly enough. When the bot is running it tends to plough through hooks very quickly!

However, in case you're wondering, I only moved that hook from queue #5 because it's an excellent article that I think deserved a lead spot, not because I felt there were too many hooks. I think though we could probably tolerate some smaller updates for a while as the rate of submissions has been down a bit lately and I like to see the number of hooks on Suggestions at at least 180 hooks so there's plenty of variety to choose from.
