I'm not sure what you expect me to do about this BQ. It's not my fault the number of submissions has tapered off. I think we currently have a semi-official number of seven hooks per update, but I had to throw a bunch of updates together quickly for Canada Day, and just made them six hook updates because it was faster. Sorry my post wasn't quite clear. No, of course it's not your fault and you've been doing a great work. Just curious, do you know how many "usable" candidates we have to have on the nomination page in order to have eight hooks per each update? --BorgQueen (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

There's no hard and fast rule, and quite honestly I can't clearly recall the fluctuations we've had or the way we dealt with them, but IIRC earlier this year we had 220-240 hooks on the Suggestions page AND a full queue and still managed to work our way through them, and over the last several weeks we had around 180-190 hooks and full queues, which remained steady in spite of doing eight hooks per update. But since about the end of May the number of submissions seemed to drop off, so we wound it back to six per update. Now we are back to 180 hooks at suggestions but the queues are nowhere near full, if they were, the number would be about 150 hooks at Suggestions, which is getting a little thin.

So I guess my answer to you would be that around 180-190 hooks at Suggestions plus six or seven full updates would be what I regard as optimal, above that number would be getting a little heavy and below would be a little light. So I'd say we are about 20-30 hooks "light" at the moment. Gatoclass (talk) 14:11, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes I did see your complaint at DYK talk a few days ago. Unfortunately after I promoted that update to the queue last night, Wikipedia went AWOL, and I was unable to edit a Wikipedia page for an hour. In the end I just gave up. DYK queue

Sorry about skipping the prep and putting hooks directly into the queue; I was trying to prepare an update or two for Bastille Day (which has already started in France) so I wanted to hasten things along by BOLDly putting it straight in the queue. I figured if we used one of Ottava's hooks per queue (1, 2, 3, and 4), we'd have enough to get through the day. rʨanaɢ ^talk/_contribs 03:02, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think it's a good idea to do that. If you get called away or something, we end up with a half finished queue. The reason we have prep pages is so that we don't end up with half-finished updates here, there and everywhere.

Apart from which, I deliberately chose what I felt were the two best Bastille Day hooks to feature in the middle of Bastille Day in Europe. So it kind of mucked up my strategy as well. Anyway, no harm done now, all the Bastille Day hooks have been promoted. Gatoclass (talk) 03:08, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, can you be a little more helpful with your comment? You don't think the hook is quite right? Can you elaborate? Possibly propose an alternative? Yes I know, but I didn't have time to elaborate and I was concerned someone might promote the article with a substandard hook. I haven't the energy to think up a new hook tonight, but I'll try to remember tomorrow. For the record though, I will say that one problem I have with the current hooks is the word "proven" which I think is misleading. The game has been ruled, or determined, or found not to be gambling, but "proven" suggests there is no argument about it, which would not be correct. Gatoclass (talk) 14:06, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Good choice. We seem to feature a lot of US football players, so I'm sure it won't hurt to skip one.

BTW, I should add that I quite agree about featuring females from time to time, and was thinking much the same as soon as making my initial comment. It's just that, to be honest, headshot photos get featured a little too frequently for my taste, so unless there is something exceptional about the pic, I generally prefer to see something different. I agree on the headshot images and, if you take a look at the archive, you will see I did everything to replace headshots unless the article is particularly well-written and/or interesting. But for some reason people like to write biographical articles more than about other subjects, and copyright-free portrait images are quite often easily available... --BorgQueen (talk) 06:07, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Re:DYK nominations

Greetings Gatoclass! I must admit I'm a little confused with the recent system. I created the article, but another user, User:Huldra, expanded it greatly (more than I contributed) and so, I would also like for her to get credit for the article. I have fixed the credits for that article. If someone helps you expand an article significantly, all you need to do is credit that guy as a co-creator, ie credit him/her as "author2" etc. Gatoclass (talk) 04:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you, sir, for correcting me ref the copyright issue of applying material from the USS Henrico Reunion Association's webpage. I thought I was using the correct attribution process as I had used in college, graduate school and war college, but apparently I wasn't. My late father was a plankowner of and a brand new CPO aboard Henrico in 1944 and I had been a guest at one of the organization's reunions in San Diego 3 years ago when I was still on active duty in a commodore billet. I thought I was doing the previous submission correctly with the best of intentions, but I'm still a new guy at this. Per your recommendation, I will strive to ensure I'm using public sites like DANFS for any future references.

Marine_steam_engine

Hi. I do not understand your addition at Marine_steam_engine#Oscillating: "Alternatively, the piston rods were dispensed with and only connecting rods used (although with this type, the engines could not be double-acting, see below)." What you appear to be describing is a single-acting engine with the gudgeon/wrist-pin in the piston (as per a typical internal combustion engine). Are you talking about the Seaward & Capel design of 1839 (Griffiths, Denis. Steam at Sea: two centuries of steam-powered ships. p. 20.)? If that is so, then it would not be an oscillating engine. Hmmm, you mean if the connecting rod were attached directly to the piston, there would be no need for the whole cylinder to oscillate? That's a good point - possibly I have misread one of my sources. My double nomination

Hi, would you please help me out here? I submitted my own DYK double nomination which is now at queue. My hook highlited two brand new articles. It read originally:

... that once a year almost 1000 mummified bodies are put on public display inside the monastic crypt at one of the churches of Kraków, namely, the Church of St. Casimir the Prince (pictured)?

Both articles were fairly elaborate. However, at this moment, while still in queue, only one article remained and is featured there, while the other one, for which I cared even more, has been cut out and discarded. It all happened so fast. If I knew about Dravecky's comment made today, I would have beefed up the reference section there of course. I check on my DYK nominations about once or twice a day. Definition of company

Seriously? That's honestly the first time I've ever heard anyone say that. Therefore I respectfully disagree with your assumption. I think and educated person would understand the usage since its found in literature, television and other pop culture sources. Chindia Tower

Thanks... although I was in the process of determining whether one of my books on Romanian history (I own a few) had any information. Unfortunately, none of my sources that mention Târgovişte say anything about the tower or its construction. I can find reference to the besieging of the "fortress of Chilia" on June 22, 1462, and again in January, 1465, by Stefan cel Mare (the Great), but I'm not sure it's the same structure as in our article. This Chilia was set fire to in January, 1499. None of the other names for the tower or its complex appear in the index of any of my books. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:14, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Possible DYK candidate currently at AfD

I wanted to ask for some possible advice on how to handle this situation. Asylum Seekers (film) is an article that was nominated for deletion while it was a poorly sourced stub. I stepped in to try to save it from deletion by sourcing and expanding it. Along the way I realized that I've expanded it five-fold in the last three days and that there are some interesting facts that could be used as a hook in a DYK. The AfD discussion will not expire until September 8 and, at this point, I have no doubt that the article will be kept but I can't nominate it while at AfD. Will September 8 be too late to nominate the article for DYK? My expansion of it started on September 1 and today is when it reached its five-fold expansion mark so I wasn't 100% sure at which point the five-day count begins. Nominate it now (under the day you started the expansion) and it will be processed after the AFD is concluded. If you wait to nominate until after the AFD, it might be challenged on the ground that it's a late nomination.

Protection wasn't the issue - the problem was that it wasn't uploaded from commons. Once it was uploaded and since it was already on the main page, cascading protection took care of it. — RockMFR 15:37, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Can you do me a favour, as I see you are active and this could be a touchy subject? I have just pulled back from prep 1 a hook. Its fairly obvious at the end of the suggestions pile. It seems to have a history - before its history. Its a fork of Bukhara and I think it fails DYK. Can you confirm? I'm not sure I can do that now, I've just done a whole bunch of verifications and I'm tired. For what it's worth, I did have a quick look at the article the other day and thought it looked okay, but I didn't check to see if it was largely lifted from another article, if that's what you meant. Hardstone carving

I admit I was amazed how difficult it was to find a completely generalized definition to reference for "hardstone carving". There are dozens or hundreds of refs, online & in my books to it in relation to specific objects, periods etc from all over the place, in books, auction catalogues & museum labels etc, but it never appears in glossaries etc, nor even the OED. Then I saw oil painting is equally unreferenced, although I suppose that would be easier to add from a book for schoolkids or something. Johnbod (talk) 13:07, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
