Thanks for your persistent efforts to rid my talk page of repeated vandalism. AIV is backed up as it often seems to be on Saturday night, giving free reign for extended periods of time to vandals. It can be frustrating when a vandal can get away with repeated vandalism for much longer than usual, especially when it is to one's talk page. You edited an edit, on Yahweh, why?

Do you disagree that Israelites distinguish themselves from Canaanites by 11 generations of heritage? And that ancient Canaanites distinguish themselves from Israelites? The term Canaanite is a primarily biblical term used to describe inhabitants of the Levant before the Israeli conquest And if memory serves, it was a Canaanite tribe that first described descendants of Terah as “Hebrews” (wonderers, travelers, foreigners, nomads) So we have a term “Canaanites” that has its primary sorce from biblical texts (see the wiki page for canaanites) And we have that biblical text differentiating Israelites from the Canaanites And we have the Canaanites differentiating themselves from the Israelites in the same text But you wont allow an edit explaining how the very text that we recieve the terms “Canaanite” and “Israelite” differentiate them

Also, who is it that believes the Israelites were originally Canaanites The very next sentance on the wiki page makes the theological distinction between the two people groups And on the Canaanite wiki page, there theology is there defining factor (search Canaanites in google and the first wiki page to populate is about the pantheon, not their geographic location)

Words matter, and these words have a source, and that source makes a specific differentiation between “Canaanite” and “Israelite”

The wiki page is wrong by any measurable standard

It has nothing to do with the warning I posted there. I can't be responsible for your ability to understand it, and I'm not going to engage in a debate with multiple IPs over it, whether or not they are "you". You know, instead of attempting to cite obscure bi laws of wiki to new users, you could actually explain the system and help people get good information on the site Instead you lead someone who has better information than that presented to instigate a dispute resolution on their first day of attempting to edit bad information

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Unless you can be bothered to use proper English grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling, at the very least, please don't edit here at the English Wikipedia. Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

@Interqwark: Because a) your level 3 warning was irrelevant, as the user had already received a level 4 warning and was queued to be blocked (and was blocked when you attempted to restore it); and the heading under which all previous warnings and the block notice were posted were just fine without your addition to the Talk page. There is no need to include the day of the month in the heading (and in fact it is best to not do so, as warnings are cumulative by the month, not the day -- your format will especially confuse ClueBot). I was going to warn the user before you did. Even if it were redundant, I’m fairly certain you can’t just remove my post (WP:TPO). I also don’t think you can remove the heading to someone’s post. If you are an active editor, occasionally you will find that your edits and posts are removed in the process of making constructive edits. It's best not to take it personally, and not to insist on restoring them unless you can provide a constructive reason to do so. When a vandal has already received a final (Level 4) warning, it's not especially constructive to give them another level 3. As for the problem with your header, the bot looks for a month heading (without a day, as it would include) to determine what level of warning it should issue to the user. When it sees the header with the day, it starts over again at level 1, even if the user has already received 3 warnings prior to that one. General Ization Talk 22:13, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

I am not upset. I was just confused as to why you removed an administrator’s heading. I assumed that you thought I added it. I don’t think that the talk page guidelines allows one to remove someone else’s heading over their own post unless it’s vandalism or spam, and I also think that it is a bit difficult to read a talk page when there are posts without headings, but I will not re-add Ad Orientem’s heading.

All of the standard template warnings accumulated by a given editor on their Talk page during a given month, whether issued by a bot or by a human, should generally be grouped under a single heading, consisting of the month and the year (without a day). Each warning should not have its own heading if one for that month already exists (and I wonder where you have seen warnings that do). If another editor has a notice or comment other than standard warnings for an editor, those should of course have their own descriptive heading. General Ization Talk 22:32, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Yes, with the month and year; not DMY or MDY. The MY heading is added automatically by the bot (or by editors using automation, such as Twinkle) in the course of issuing the warning if they do not find one as the last heading on the page. Because the only reason the additional heading was added when AO added the block notice was because of your intervening edit with the non-conforming header that confused the automation. When your edit (and the extra heading) was removed, all of the notices appeared under the single MY heading. It should be clear from AO's comments below that they have no issue with it. In this article, in the paragraph of "Role of women" the sources cited are the tabloid press, that the actors earn more money just for being men is something extremely absurd, it's as if they said that male basketball players earn more money than the female basketball players just for being men, ignoring the race, the years in basketball, the annotations, the matches won, the titles obtained. Edmund Thomas Clint

Hello.

I recently edited the page on the late child art prodigy Edmund Thomas Clint, which was later reverted by you. However, there seems to be a mistake in the reverting. My edit was only adding extra information on the author of Clint's English biography. Namely, I added that the book was authored by Ammu Nair, who knew Clint as a young child. The name of said biography, "A Brief Hour of Beauty", was already part of the verified article before. However, now in removing the extra information I added, the whole sentence - including the name of the biography- seems to have been removed. If you go down to the references, or just revert my edit, you can see that the name of the biography itself was already present in the article, and is still present in the references.

I apologize for not citing a source, as it was my first edit here, and I was unaware of the format and citation rules at the time. I was only trying to be helpful by adding the name of the author and the fact that she knew Clint as a child, because I am friends with the late prodigy Clint's family, and I happen to know the author in question as well. I felt an obligation to add that piece of information, because it felt helpful.

Please consider looking at the existing references, and the 'pre-edit' version of the article and adding back the name of that biography back to the page. It is at this time, the definitive biography of the artist in question, and the link to it is already present in the references, without my edit. You can read an original news article about the release of the biography here.

Once again, I apologize for not citing sources with the edit before, as it was purely a case of ignorance. However, I do not wish my mistake to be responsible for previously existing valid information on the page to now be deleted.

@Absurdister: As you note, your addition was unsourced. In addition, we do not permit external links (as opposed to citations) in the body of articles, and it is not important to point out in a biographical article on Wikipedia from what seller a biographical book may be purchased (see WP:SPAM). The book itself is not a notable work. It continues to serve as a cited reference for the article here (which is fine, without links or instructions to purchase it). Hello again.

I understand the issues and problems mentioned by you in the response to my earlier note. And I completely agree that if my knowing said family and the author is a source of conflict, then I should not edit his page. I had thought of it as an advantage in terms of information. But now that I am aware of the conflict rule, I am quite comfortable with not editing that page anymore. This is in no way an attempt at promoting anything of any material or other gain to me.

My concern right now is that the page, at this point, mentions only the "regional language biography which is simply not accessible to a majority of people, apart from those hailing from one specific region, and does not mention at all the English language biography which is available internationally.

Please let me know what kind of citations or other material I should provide to anyone, who is actually qualified and conflict free, to verify and edit the page in order for the page to also mention the book about Clint which more people can actually access now.

Thank you very much for your time. I apologize for the repeated notes, and while I understand that the conflict in me editing this page, I would still like it to be updated and helpful to anyone who may want to learn more about Clint.

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

rejection of 'democracy' edit

The 'majority rules' definition of democracy, which cites Miriam-Webster's definition is an incomplete and misleading definition because by its logic, the examples I provided in my edit would be defined as examples of democracy. In fact, the rise of nazism (majoritarian fascism), the use of popular sovereignty to maintain slavery, and the overriding of the supreme court's protections against Cherokee eviction are all examples in which majoritarian rule was anti-democratic, so it follows that the definition of democracy must go beyond 'majority rule' to sufficiently define democracy as something different from majoritarian fascism.

Rejecting this as a byproduct of personal analysis is not correct, because defining democracy simply as 'majority rule' conflates it with the definition of popular sovereignty or majoritarian fascism, which are generally considered different political systems than democracy, which involves checks and balances and other safeguards against majoritarian fascism.

@Jmn100: Please don't assume that other editors are not familiar with the conventions of one or another version of English. For reference, I refer you to MOS:LQ, which describes our policy concerning the treatment of punctuation and quotes here at Wikipedia: "On the English Wikipedia, use the 'logical quotation' style in all articles, regardless of the variety of English in which they are written. Include terminal punctuation within the quotation marks only if it was present in the original material, and otherwise place it after the closing quotation mark. For the most part, this means treating periods and commas in the same way as question marks: Keep them inside the quotation marks if they apply only to the quoted material and outside if they apply to the whole sentence. ... If the quotation is a single word or a sentence fragment, place the terminal punctuation outside the closing quotation mark." Examples are given at the link. Hi General Ization, it's clear that the IP editor that we have been dealing with is persistent in pursuing an agenda of supplying perceived synonyms to articles. I have undone some of the individual's other contributions. I left Air force#Organization and units in place, which the individual had changed from "Organization" to "Organization and units" only because there is a table showing "units". I hesitated to file the report only because technically I could be considered at 4RR there myself (though perhaps debatable). Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Guild of Copy Editors August 2018 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the August 2018 GOCE newsletter. Thanks to everyone who participated in the Guild's June election; your new and returning coordinators are listed below. The next election will occur in December 2018; all Wikipedia editors in good standing may take part.

Our June blitz focused on Requests and articles tagged for copy edit in October 2017. Of the eleven people who signed up, eight editors recorded a total of 28 copy edits, including 3 articles of more than 10,000 words. Complete results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the July drive. Of the seventeen people who signed up, thirteen editors completed 194 copy edits, successfully removing all articles tagged in the last three months of 2017. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are here.

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
