Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

On Surfside article

Symonowicz is of Polish origin but his citizenship is Lithuanian, what is mentioned in the article ("As well, there is no information on when did he come to the United States from Lithuania, the country of his citizenship". Per WP:RSBLOG, blogs may be acceptable sources if the writers are professionals. In this case, Voice of Generation is one of the most well-known and professional Substack blogs. WP:RSBLOG requires that the writer be identified in order to determine their professional status for the source to be considered reliable. The source of this story is only identified in its byline by the name of the blog. Find a reliable source or omit. Emergent Biosolutions Chikungunya vaccine development

Hello General Ization. You didn't give me a chance to finish my edit. I posted a couple of sentences, then had to check another reference and you asked me what's the relevance? Emergent is developing a chikungunya vaccine and a 2-year clinical trial showed good results. I put the two sentences in on the disease to give readers a link and a very brief intro to the problem. @Bert Bowler: Generally, you want to establish the relevance of new content at the same time you make an edit that introduces that content. No one here is a mind reader, and we don't know when -- or if -- you'll return to provide that context. Next time, I'd wait until you have all the information together before adding the content. General Ization. You are right. I used the NYT article for background on the disease only and establishing the serious problem it is becoming. I also followed the directions at the top of the "Edit Conflict" response page, re-edited and published changes only to have another "Edit Conflict" appear. Do not know what else to do and I have to sign off for now. I'll save my information and post it another day. Thanks for your interest and the clarity you provide to a new editor. @Bert Bowler: Edit conflict only means that you and I, and/or someone else, were trying to save (publish) changes to the article simultaneously (or more accurately that someone else has saved changes since you started editing it), and only one set of changes can be saved at a time. I am not editing the article, so you should be able to make and save your changes. Generally when I receive an EC notice, I copy my changes to the clipboard, cancel, and try again in a few minutes. You don't need to sign off to clear the condition. General Ization Talk 16:51, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
This is a good reason to not keep the editing window open while you research other changes you may want to make. More than likely, someone else will come along and make a change in the meantime, increasing the likelihood that you will encounter an edit conflict. Either publish your changes in small batches, or wait to make your changes until you have the information ready. General Ization Talk 16:58, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Current events

Election time: Voting in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 16 June and will conclude at the end of the month. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Have your say and show support here.

June Blitz: Our June copy-editing blitz is underway and will conclude on 26 June.

Drive and blitz reports

January Drive: 28 editors completed 324 copy edits totalling 714,902 words. At the end of the drive, the backlog had reached a record low of 52 articles. (full results)

February Blitz: 15 editors completed 48 copy edits totalling 142,788 words. (full results)

March Drive: 29 editors completed 215 copy edits totalling 407,736 words. (full results)

April Blitz: 12 editors completed 23 copy edits totalling 56,574 words. (full results)

May Drive: 29 editors completed 356 copy edits totalling 479,013 words. (full results)

Other news

Progress report: as of 26 June, GOCE participants had completed 343 Requests since 1 January. The backlog has fluctuated but remained in control, with a low of 52 tagged articles at the end of January and a high of 620 articles in mid-June.

@Kahlores: I have left the Possible causes section demoted under Background, as it seemed to be working OK there for the time being, and was being frequently updated as new information emerged. Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

@Boobruh007: As has been previously explained, any updates to this page will need to be a) non-promotional in nature and b) sourced to published, independent, reliable sources (i.e., not brochures or media releases produced by NIAM). Unless you are affiliated with or employed by NIAM (so have a conflict of interest), you are perfectly capable of doing so if you are able and willing to comply with these policies. If not, the article will remain as it is until someone else, who is, is interested in updating it and does so. I am not particularly interested. General Ization Talk 14:44, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: From 20 to 26 June, 6 participating editors claimed 16 copy edits, focusing on requests and articles tagged in March and April. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Almost 575,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 24 people who signed up, 18 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 15 to 21 August, we copy edited articles tagged in April and May 2021 and requests. 9 participating editors completed 17 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

New maintenance template added to our project scope: After a short discussion in June, we added {{cleanup tense}} to the list of maintenance templates that adds articles to the Guild's copy editing backlog categories. This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).

Progress report: As of 18:26, 24 September 2021 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 468 requests since 1 January and there were 60 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Howdy General Ization. I understand that you were trying to remove an unsupported quote from the article. However, your execution seems odd to me. You revert to my edit has the summation "This quote is not supported by any of the cited sources." Yet I did not add the quote; I fixed a typo (specifically, a space between the end of a word and a comma). I would encourage you to be more precise with where you place reverts, not only to prevent confusion but also to help the editor of your target improve. If you take the time to revise the work of the actual editor, they will undoubtedly benefit from reading your summary/rationale and may become a better contributor for it. @Ifny: Perhaps you didn't notice that I ultimately reverted the addition of the quote in its entirety, which was the edit made by another editor just prior to yours. It's often a good idea to review the entire page history, including subsequent edits, prior to addressing another editor concerning a specific reversion. You'll find that the provisions of WP:EW3 do not apply to unsourced or poorly sourced biographical information about heretofore living persons, especially declarations of death. Yeah, no you are mostly wrong. First off your second link is a mistake, it is only a discussion on living people, not a page about policies. But you are mistaken about the policy, what you should have done after the second since you clearly felt that you were in the right and it was unreliable sourcing was reporting it as it says in the 3RR page where the 7 exemptions are listed and the last one clearly says:

7) Removing contentious material that is libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced according to Wikipedia's biographies of living persons (BLP) policy. What counts as exempt under BLP can be controversial. Preferably you should choose reporting to the BLP noticeboard instead of relying on this exemption. But I doubt anyone will bother reporting you for 3RR, so you shouldn't have any issue, just be careful, you were technically on the wrong side.Gloern (talk) 05:07, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Why is stating that Emma Portner uses they/them and she/her as pronouns considered to be poorly sourced when the source is literally Emma's own Instagram profile?

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

regarding youth orchestra list edits

The editor who deleted my entry (and numerous others that are properly cited) did so because they do not have articles, which is not a valid reason to delete an addition to a list; especially when the page specifies that links are the only thing necessary. @Jediwashington: I assure you that the editor who reverted your edits is much more familiar with Wikipedia policies and practices than you currently are. WP:NEXIST pertains to the evaluation of notability, not to the addition of entries in list articles. Their reversions were correct. See WP:WTAF and WP:BURDEN.
