[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions; however, it appears you may have written a Wikipedia article about yourself, at User:Geoffmalc/sandbox. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – please see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to or change an existing article about yourself, you are welcome to propose the changes by visiting the article's talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was the page I created deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss this with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Article
[edit]Hi, Geoffmalc! I saw your question at the Articles for Creation help desk and thought I'd come here to discuss.
The basic problem is proving that you are what Wikipedia calls "notable." It doesn't mean important; it means you've been covered at significant length in several reliable sources. Generally, reliable sources are major newspapers outside your own local area, national magazines, books, etc. At significant length means more than just a brief mention or a quote by you; we'd want to see entire articles that are about you or that cover you at length. You also can prove notability by being given some signal honor that is only given to a very small handful of people.
From your question at the help desk, I think that perhaps the people who are advising you to do this don't understand Wikipedia's purpose. Wikipedia is not a repository of family history. It's an encyclopedia. You could write this history up for your family, which I think is a fabulous idea, and I wish my grandparents and great-grandparents had done something like that. But Wikipedia doesn't publish these documents. Facebook and LinkedIn would be the place for those.
I'm happy to answer any questions.
