Found error in featured list

Hi, I found several errors in the featured list but I'm not sure how to correct them, or who to contact. You were named as the delegate, so I will try here. The lists List of British Columbia general elections, List of Manitoba general elections, List of post-confederation New Brunswick general elections, List of post-confederation Nova Scotia general elections, List of Ontario general elections, List of Quebec general elections, List of Saskatchewan general elections, and List of Newfoundland and Labrador general elections were all demoted in 2010 for having no citations whatsoever. WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! A slight correction: only one was filed in November. One was filed on 17 December and one only eleven days ago. List of clergy educated at Jesus College, Oxford

Please pull this from the main page. I only just spotted that it was scheduled when browsing an unrelated page which mentioned it (WP:FTMAIN). I do not appreciate lists where I am the primary editor being nominated and scheduled with absolutely no notice to me. This is not the first time this has happened, either. The page needs updating - first of all, there are a number of clergy articles that have been written in the last few years by other people that need to be added; next, the article is tagged as having deadlinks and citation parameters in need of updating. It is not in delisting territory but it needs a clean-up and I am not going to have time to do this in the next few days. I strongly suggest that you introduce a rule at TFL to match the TFA rule - nominators of someone else's work ought to notify the principal editor(s), where they are still active. Failing that, it would be good to follow TFA practice and notify editors when something is scheduled, rather than hope that they spot an edit on their watchlist changing the article history on the list's talk page. Update: I've reverted many of Neelix's recent changes to the list because they were not improvements, but I have now started on the required improvements. The TFL blurb was awful, I'm sorry to say, so I've rewritten that, just in case you insist on keeping this in the TFL queue. I have fixed the deadlink but I need to resolve the page's membership of Category:Pages containing cite templates with deprecated parameters. FYI, a sweep of Category:Jesus College, Oxford subcategories a couple of weeks ago showed me that there are about 40 or 50 alumni or fellows to add to the various lists - this is not something I can do overnight, especially where I need to find FL-level references to show that Dr X or the Reverend Y went to Jesus College. Thanks for your understanding and my apologies for being a bit snappy earlier - having been in your shoes as TFA scheduler for two years, I know how difficult and unrewarding the job can be and how having people snap at you isn't the best approach! Bencherlite, this isn't your fault, but you picked a really bad time to bring this up, with a vital CPA exam coming up this weekend, a lack of suitable replacements at TFLS, and a bunch of other stuff to do here. Anyway, your list is gone and I wrote a crappy replacement blurb in about 15 minutes for the FL community to pick apart as they please. I was under the impression that primary editors would notice when the talk pages of their lists reflected the future appearance, but perhaps that's limiting. Yes it is limiting and I suggest that TFL stops relying on that. I wasn't looking out for such an appearance in my watchlist and I obviously missed it during a period of the year when I wasn't editing as often as at other times, and when what time I had wasn't being spent seeing whether someone had nominated one of "my" lists for the main page behind my back. That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

• Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
• AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
• Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
• And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

Videos and citation sources

I have a question regarding the use of videos as sources. In the performers section of 84th Academy Awards list, some users (including 'Atomic Meltdown) want to put the songs (or actually singing about the Best Picture nominees in tune with popular songs) that host Billy Crystal performed in his opening monologue. Atomic Meltdown uses this article from The Hollywood Reporter as a source. The article contains a video of Billy Crystal performing the songs, but the article itself does not say or indicate word for word in the text what he is actually singing (i.e. singing about Midnight in Paris to the tune of "The Last Time I Saw Paris"). I know what Crystal sang is true, but for the sake of Wikipedia standards, is this acceptable?

BTW, could you review the 63rd Academy Awards?

Tim Howard

Hey! Do you ever work on soccer articles? Or do you know an FA writer who does? Tim Howard is "dual famous"-- he is not only the best known US soccer player (after his record 15 saves in the 2014 World Cup); he is also the most recognized person in the world with Tourette syndrome. He published a book in December 2014, and I've been wanting to tackle his article, but it is in terrible shape, and I don't think I can do it alone. Are you game, or do you know anyone who might be ? Hi Sandy! I'd rate my soccer knowledge at about a 6.5 out of 10; I know that Howard had a great 2014 World Cup performance and was on an FA Cup-winning team, but any fine discussions about his skill set are probably going to be too advanced for me. If I do make some contributions to the article, which I will time permitting, I don't want any credit for it on the WBFAN list. It's your idea, and chances are I wouldn't consider myself a primary contributer to the article. I'm in my busy season in real life, and still have a couple of improvements to make to the New Jersey Devils article for FAR, so it may be a few weeks before I can devote much time to Mr. Howard. Thanks for the ideas, Giants ... it's funny that I've been "away" so long that I had forgotten who the top football/soccer editors were ! I can't do anything on the soccer/football front, but I am reading through his book now, and there is material for a wonderful article. I followed Howard before he was anybody in soccer, and was sorry that Tourette syndrome wasn't run TFA at the time of his world cup success (I think we've lost the flexibility at TFA to be able to take advantage of last-minute opportunities like that). It's not just the soccer success story ... there's a rags to riches aspect (all that his mother had to do to help him along), overcoming the difficulties of a childhood with Tourette's and using it to his advantage, going on to help others with tics, coming up in soccer at a time the sport was just getting more recognized in the US ... there are many aspects to his story that could be a great read. I can add all the personal, inspirational, what motivated him, and TS stuff, but can't do anything unless someone helps with the sports aspects. I'm in no hurry! I'm concerned about adding too much before what is there is cleaned up. I suspect there is copyvio that goes all the way back to 2007, and I suspect that a lot of the uncited text that was in there got picked up by what would now be considered reliable sources, meaning we now have mirrors of Wikipedia that may be reporting uncited text ... I've found several instances of that ... so I'm going very slow on adding anything.

And, I'm finding a frustrating aspect of his book is that he doesn't always mention years for things, so I need to use complementary sources. And he doesn't always use last names! I had to go figure out that his agent, Dan, is Dan Segal. argh.

And ... he has made contradictory statements. Back in 2003, he was saying his tics had no impact on his play. These days, he credits his neurobiology for his success on the field. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:33, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

If the text is that faulty, I'd just rewrite it from scratch. It takes longer, but the end result will be better and you won't risk leaving any copyvio. As an example from my recent past, I did a mammoth renovation of History of the New York Yankees (only click the link if you think War and Peace wasn't long enough to grab your interest, or if you gave up on Boston after last year), and I'd be surprised if I left more than a handful of sentences from the original article. Regarding sourcing, you won't have any problems finding reliable articles on his national team career or his time in England. Your biggest challenge will be finding information on his MLS years. I have access to a university library (at least for now), but I don't know how much the New York Times would have covered him. Soccer was a minor sport here at the time, and the then-MetroStars were rarely competitive from what I remember. Giants2008 (Talk) 19:17, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, Howard is a candidate that needs to be rewritten from scratch. He goes into a good deal of detail in his book on his MLS years, so even though I wouldn't take his word for it, there's enough there to know what info to search for in independent sources.

Giants, I am shocked, appalled and dismayed that you would suggest I go anywhere near a Yankees article! Apparently, my reputation does not precede me!!.

I saw that Giants just made an edit. I have literally (really literally) rewritten the Imperials to Metrostars paragraph 5 times but deleted it each time. There is some fun sourcing. My favorite talked about how the Imperials were worried about signing him to a $250/wk contract since it would present him from college ball and an other that spoke about him getting razzed by older gys and being on the road. Really cool stuff. I'm having a hard time putting it together in a coherent narrative. This is probably because I am drunk but I also noticed that the prose contradict the table (6 starts vs 16). I think it would be awesome if you just went to town with the book and the preexisting sources. I'm pretty sure that I can hammer out the sourcing and other gnomish activities if you just go for it.
