FLC query

Hi Giants, just wondering whether it is considered bad form to have more than two FLCs on the go at a time. The top of the page says Nominators should not add a second featured list nomination until the first has gained substantial support and reviewers' concerns have been substantially addressed, but it doesn't say anything about a third. My two current nominations have been open for four weeks and three weeks and have four and two supports respectively (I would have thought the earlier one might have been promoted by now, but maybe it's not quite there yet). Should I wait until one has been promoted before adding another? Thanks! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:29, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

YouTube Awards for TFL

Hi Giants. Thank you very much for submitting YouTube Awards at TFL and writing a blurb for it. I was planning on nominating the article myself in mid-October, so that it could be run on 14 February 2020. This will be the 15-year anniversary of YouTube and will also fall on a Friday, so I thought it might be an appropriate TFL for that date. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks, A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 15:50, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

That sounds like a fine date. I'll pick another list for this day and you can feel free to post a nom at TFLS for this article. Giants2008 (Talk) 15:12, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll nominate the list in October, then. A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 15:57, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Glitch at TFL submission

When I click link on step two of submission instructions, it adds the information on a redirect page instead of the proper page? The correct page seems to be TFL/Submissions, but the "Click here" button leads to TFL/submissions, with a small "s"; that page with small s is a redirect. I've copied my submission to the correct place and it looks like Yashthepunisher and Peacemaker had the same problem, they moved their submissions too. Here's a diff of peacemaker talking about the glitch in edit summary. Regards, TryKid (talk) 00:47, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

  • @TryKid: I somehow forgot to investigate this comment until a peek on my talk page just now reminded me. Sorry about that. I made this edit to the instructions, which appears to have fixed the problem. Thanks for bringing that up, as I'm sure it was an annoyance. Giants2008 (Talk) 12:44, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Doubleday myth, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Baseman (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Giants2008 hi. I just have a suggestion regarding the image at November 15. How about this image is used of another winner (1998) - India's first women photojournalist "Homai Vyarawalla". There is already an image in the article of her, but i prefer the image in the infobox of her blp. What do you say? DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 07:20, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

  • DiplomatTesterMan We can't use the biography infobox image because it's non-free and fair-use images aren't permitted on the Main Page. If you think the other Vyarawalla photo would be better suited than the one I originally picked, let me know and I'll be happy to change it. Giants2008 (Talk) 19:26, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
Oh yes, sorry, the bio image can't be used... I do think the other Vyarawalla image would be better suited. (I am sure it won't be confusing for people as to who the winner is, the lady on the left or right. The caption does say it quite clearly and the image is clear. If you have no objections or other suggestions, please do go ahead and make the changes. I am sure Yashthepunisher won't have any objections either but tagging to check. Thanks! DiplomatTesterMan (talk) 12:06, 22 October 2019 (UTC)
Okay, the switch is done. Giants2008 (Talk) 21:44, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

TFL notification - Grade I listed buildings in Monmouthshire

Dear Giants2008 - Thanks for this. I have replied on my Talkpage but I think I may have misfired the ping so I wanted to make sure you saw it. In a nutshell, I've made a very small tweak to the blurb, for accuracy. All the best and thanks again. KJP1 (talk) 10:06, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

DYK for 1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game

On 1 November 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Bill Walton made 21 of his 22 field goal attempts in the 1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, 1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2019 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year! Our Champion this year is Better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly Adam Cuerden (submissions), who over the course of the competition has amassed 91 featured pictures, including 32 in the final round. Our finalists this year were:

  1. Better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly Adam Cuerden (submissions) with 964 points
  2. England Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 899 points
  3. Norfolk Island Casliber (submissions) with 817 points

  7. United States Usernameunique (submissions) with 145 points
  8. Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions) with 74 points

All those who reached the final will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field. Awards will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

We have opened a scoring discussion on whether the rules and scoring need adjustment. Please have your say. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2020 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! FLC query

Hi Giants, hope you are well. My List of Hot Country Singles number ones of 1987 FLC is still listed as both needing more reviews and needing a source review, even though it has five supports and the source review has been completed. Just wondered if there's anything I have overlooked/failed to do at my end which is stopping it getting over the line? All the best, ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:56, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! Hey, just wanted to let you know that the issues regarding using national-football-teams.com as a source have been fixed, as they have been replaced by the player's RSSSF page. If there are other issues regarding the FL nomination, let me know. Thanks, Nehme1499 (talk) 02:26, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

During my previous FAC for Cyclone Taylor, it was mentioned I should see if you'd be willing to go through it again and see if there is anything to fix, prose-wise. I would like to renominate again, and have addressed the concerns from that FAC, but if you'd be willing to give it a look first, it would certainly be much appreciated. Jerusalem maps

Hi Giants, thanks again for your comments at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Cartography of Jerusalem/archive1. Do you think I need to solicit more sets of comments in order to achieve promotion? I couldn’t see anywhere a guideline for the number of supports needed. Onceinawhile (talk) 17:20, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi Giants

You may already be aware of this, in which case apologies, but I notice that the FLC for ...Baby One More Time (album) was closed 11 days ago, but it is still appearing at WP:FLC. I am guessing the bot didn't pick it up correctly.....?

Another FLC question

Hi Giants

Sorry to bother you - I noticed that you just closed a few FLCs, but my one for List of Hot Country Singles number ones of 1972, which has five supports and a completed source review, remains open. Just wondering if you had any idea when you might get to that one?

All the best, ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:34, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

Re: a question you posted on WT:TFA

Putting this here as that discussion is chaotic enough, but Vanamonde93's User:Vanamonde93/Main page editor proposal might be what you remember. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:44, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

That's the one I was thinking of. Looks like it's gotten some mixed feedback so far, but there's no way to know how the proposed TFA changes would affect viewpoints there (if at all). Giants2008 (Talk) 02:38, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

DYK for The Baseball Encyclopedia

On 9 February 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Baseball Encyclopedia, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that before the release of The Baseball Encyclopedia, a Major League Baseball committee passed a rules interpretation that would have altered Babe Ruth's home run total, before reversing its decision? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Baseball Encyclopedia. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Baseball Encyclopedia), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Also pinging The Rambling Man and PresN. Apologies for not anticipating the direction that was going to take: I was hoping for "Your table formats don't completely suck." The last thing I expected was RexxS saying "I'd recommend you advertise that page (User:Dank/Tables) as "best practice" for editors interested in improving their tables." I want to write some lists about flora in North Carolina, but the only go-bys I could find were like Dudley's, and that format didn't work well at 133% for my vision (it gets tiring to read long columns two or three words at a time). So ... I'm gratified that RexxS is happy because I admire his expertise, but I just want to let you guys know that I'm not going to "advertise" anything. I'm never going to be checking tables at zooms higher than 133%, and most things that look a little "off" at 133% aren't worth worrying about, I think. Btw, the problem that I mentioned, where 90% of the text is in a tiny column at 133% zoom, rarely happens at FLC: out of all the current FL candidates, the only two that are even a little problematic are List of World Heritage Sites in Iceland and List of World Heritage Sites in Finland. I had already decided to review those anyway, and I'll bring up the issue there ... after I've already supported (if I can support), so that it's clear it's not a demand. If any of you find any reviewers aggressively pursuing any issues related to 133% zoom and quoting what I said, please let me know ... I don't support any kind of aggressive approach on this. Thoughts are welcome. - Dank (push to talk) 20:45, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@Dank: I'm running busy and have only had time to skim through what you've done, but it's quite interesting. This is the first time I can recall seeing a template of sorts that allows for effective sorting with column spans. Finding a way around the kinds of limitations associated with spans is great work and should benefit future list writers. I can't say that I use that level of zoom myself (my eyes fortunately aren't that bad ... yet), but it's worth mentioning if you find such issues during a review. Giants2008 (Talk) 03:06, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. The issues don't come up often, but I'll mention them, and keep a log at User talk:Dank/Tables. - Dank (push to talk) 03:17, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
  • England Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
  • United States Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
  • Somerset Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
  • Pirate flag CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
  • The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included United States L293D, Venezuela Kingsif, Antarctica Enwebb, England Lee Vilenski and Nepal CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup newsletter correction

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; United States L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, United States Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews.
