Addition of unsourced material to Wikipedia

Hello, I'm N2e. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Phil Cantillon, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! Hey Gibbo136. Welcome to Wikipdedia. You added a good bit of unsourced material to the Phil Cantillon article, as well as deleted a number of valid article tags that were aiming to improve the article.

I have temporarily reverted the changes you made for now.

Phil Cantillon article

Hi Gibbo. Thanks for your contribution to the Phil Cantillon article.

I'd be happy to help you learn to make edits in that article that will stick, and stay in the encyclopedia long-term.

While your first set of edits did add a few bare URL citations, those same edits also removed two full (complete) citations that had already been in the article, and also removed {{citation needed}} tags that had been in the article looking for citations to suppport specific claims. I would recommend you make edits a little less complicated, and with only one thing at a time, allowing a day or two to learn from what other editors might have to say about that (smaller) edit. Would allow learning without throwing out good work that is already in the encyclopedia.

Since you had such a complex set of edits, making both some improvements but also deleting material that should not have been deleted, I had reverted the entire set, and asked you to add back in the part that you could cite without doing the deletions.

Since you did not do that, but rather reverted and added back the entire mess, I have gone along with your approach. I've now left ALL of the material that is sourced, and removed the material that is not sourced.

My recommendation to you as a new editor, is to now add back only a little at a time, always with a citation that backs up all the claims you make in the article prose, to allow some amount of learning to occur between each set of edits. I'll try to watch the article, and help out, if you do just a little at a time. However, if you make major edits, and part are okay with Wikipedia policy, and part are not, it will make it much more difficult to improve the article. I'm really trying to help, and will if you want to work together to improve the article.

Hi Gibbo. Did not see your note to me until today. I'll be happy to convert another reference to, what is called in Wikipedia-talk, a "full" citation. But I don't have time to do them all; so please take a look at the basic citation syntax I use, put the URL into the "|url=..." field, and add the other information as appropriate. There, I just converted one more of the bare URL cites to a full citation. There are now two examples of standard citation templates in that article, one from the Liverpool Echo which I just added today, and one from The Telegraph that I added back in January. Both should serve as examples of how to write a full citation. After you've tried doing a couple yourself, ping me on my Talk page and ask me to look them over, if you want to. Cheers. If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
