Request for wider input on discussion at WikiProject Tennis

Hi, there is an extremely long and muddled discussion going on at WP:Tennis about the tournament tables found on tennis player articles (i.e. this type of table), and I'm notifying you as you identified yourself as a member of the project. The dispute is over the "Tournament Name" column, with the options being to either use the "sponsored tournament name" - in other words, the name involving the sponsor, for example Internazionali BNL d'Italia - or the "non-sponsored tournament name" - in other words, Rome Masters. I appreciate that this conversation is very long and convoluted, so a brief summary can be found here, which is also where I request the discussion continues. Audio samples for Thriller (album)

Hi Giggy. Currently we only have an audio sample of the title track. Could we have a sample of another track. I can't make audio samples myself but was wondering if you could help me? Generally speaking wikipedia has very few audio samples on Jackson. Anyway it would be nice to have an audio sample on one of the lesser know, yet well received tracks such as "Human Nature". — Realist² 00:33, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Eek. :S Basically download the program, open the file in it, crop it out so it's about a 30 second sample, optionally add some fade ins and fade outs (from the effects menu). Go Edit --> Preferences, and in the box that shows up change the OGG quality to 0 (zero). Then go File --> Export as OGG vorbis, give it a file name, and save. You can use User:Giggy/Audio when you upload for an easy FUR. —Giggy 11:47, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Over 9000 - help

Okay, my adoptive parent, I need help

I found a reference on the Anonymous page to Over 9000 and found there was no article on Over 9000. I wrote one here:

I usually feel I have to say these things because sometimes I lighthearted japery against process is taken at face value. This of course, only makes it more fun to do, but I put a disclaimer in now... just in case!

Seriously though, I feel I'm already starting to hit the wall I do when I decide to improve an article, and I'm sort of stuck for what we should be adding. Sure, we could do a laundry list of all of the nice things that critics have said about the band, but that doesn't strike me as overly useful. Getting all the history stuff done is my current priority, just because I like to go in order article down. Nice work on the image addition, btw. For musical style, check out Nine Inch Nails#Musical characteristics which has a good one. I don't particularly like Powderfinger's and want to fix it one day. Silverchair's is OK, I guess, but somewhat unconventional. R.E.M.'s looks good at a glance. But yeah. Just whack stuff on and we can sort it all out later. Peter Jones comments

FACs fail for lack of comments? It's not just a relist/keep listed? I've not partaken before apart from the occasional comment. Anyways, I wonder if the sujbject matter might be hosing me. Wikiproject Methodism seems to have exactly one active participant, and Wikiproject Anishishabe seems to have the same. I've personally never commented on an featured article candidate where I didn't know the subject matter. But I've never tried my hand at FAC before, I've cut everything loose by GA, so I really don't know the culture. WilyD 03:17, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

If there isn't enough support they're sometimes archived as a lack of consensus. Luck of the draw. Relisting generally happens if the FAC page is getting too full and nobody has any idea what's going on (though sometimes they just go to a new FAC page, eg. this shitstorm).

I usually find that people otherwise uninterested will comment on random FACs (eg. I commented on yours, and just now added some comments on a cyclone tropical storm. It's not like it's a cabal or anything, but I find that adding useful comments on others' FACs helps build the good faith in general and might get some more eyes over to yours.

Question regarding Infobox image use at Mother and Child Reunion (Degrassi: The Next Generation)

Hi Giggy. You said at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Mother and Child Reunion (Degrassi: The Next Generation) to take a look at The Stolen Earth regarding the image box image working with NFCC. I see that one has the caption "Near the end of the episode, Rose cradles a dying Doctor, who has just been shot by a Dalek extermination ray. The scene was written by executive producer Russell T Davies as a pastiche of romance fiction, and described by lead actor David Tennant as a "bitter scene of high emotion"." Yeah, essentially, if you're going to use the nonfree image you'll need some critical commentary relating to that specific scene, to show it's noteworthy. I don't understand how you can defend him after such incivility. I understand you had a problem with animum brining up his RFA votes, and so did I, but his comments about being refused account creator and his reply to that teacher were completely out of order. He has a long history of such comments, he's dead immature, and he accuses anyone who disagrees with him of hating wikipedia. You probably now this better than me, but I urge you to reconsider your oppose of the block which appears to be based on animum's comments. Favor and stuff

I'm doing some heavy multitasking right now cleaning up a bunch of the selected WP:ALM articles (particularly some FAs and GAs people haven't been looking after too well). I'd like to get diffs set for at least the top ten articles on the list as soon as possible. Coud you give Pearl Jam and Radiohead a run-through? Past experience has shown that those two articles are pretty well-maintained and there shouldn't be too much work to do in selecting/creating excellent versions to use for the 0.7 release. Bande Dessinée portal

Hello, I saw that you are a portal peer review volunteer. I have worked much for the improvement of my portal, but some concerns may remain:

• Is the image at the top of the page useful and aesthetic, or should I remove or replace it ?
  • Uggh... it does seem somewhat tacky. I'd remove it.
• Problem with the selected biography: I contented myself with writing a short sentence as an introduction for each personality. Then I wrote the beginning of the biography, then put a link "more..." to the complete article. Is it approriate ?
  • Seems OK. Formatting issue with the more; take a look at (for instance) the more links on P:AUSMUSIC (bold, in brackets, etc.) and format them like that. Also, none of the blurbs should have refs in them (I noted one at Portal:Bande Dessinée/Selected biography/2. Some prefer to have the blurb just a copy paste of the lead, but it's up to you.
• Selected images are not of the same size. Is it really a problem ? It should be noted that free images for comics are very rare.
  • Should be OK as long as they're not too different.
• Is the presentation of the news correct ? I did not specified the exact date of each event, only the month, because I do not know it.
  • That's fine.
• If you have any other recommendations about other aspects of the portal, do not hesitate ! It MUST become a featured portal ! Thanks. (Please reply here).--Pah777 (talk) 22:02, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Age of Empires II

Hi Giggy, I've done a little copyedit work on Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, but there's still a lot more to get through. I was working on Development, but I ran into something odd: "Artificial intelligence (AI) was an area that drew criticism in Age of Empires. One cause of this was that AI in the game did not "cheat"; that is, they did not grant themselves additional resources not made available to the human player." I would think that a reviewer would complain if the AI did cheat, not the other way around.

A general note: I'm noticing a lot of links as I go through the text. This is something that certain FAC regulars do not like to see, and I find I'm also becoming more sparing with what I link. For example, when listing the resources of food, wood, etc., the reader is not likely interested in the article on food—it is not closely related with the topic, and we can safely assume the reader is familiar enough with the concept that he will not need to visit it for a refresher. Another case is "economic buildings", which links to Economy. This is a slight surprise—a reader might think he's going to see an economic building article, which sounds kind of interesting, but instead goes to the plain economy article, which has the same problems as food. These kinds of links draw attention away from the more important links. Pagrashtak 14:23, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

I am so sorry, as you said "To have you come out and oppose just because" was not what I meant to do. If you take a look at my contribs, it was my last edit of the night and I forgot to add the most important part, why I was opposing. I have added that now, and have added there. The reason I oppose adminbots is because I feel the most important trait of adminship is judgement, and bots have none. The reason I included so much of the other content is because whenever I oppose an adminbot someone retorts that RedirectCleanupBot is fine, whether I believe Skynet will occur, or whether I plan to do the bot's job manually myself. So I included my counterclaim against each, but completely forgot at nearly 1AM to include the part about bots not having judgement. I hope I was able to clarify my point and/or position and hopefully you still think I "hav[e] pretty good judgement". I would never just show up to a discussion, flout everyone, and disappear. using malking to source facts

Hey, hey, why do you remove this. I asked on the talk page at Talk:Anonymous_(group)#Sarah_Palin.27s_E_mail_account_in_Yahoo (the last two comments), and it seems that there was no problem as soon as soon as I only sourced only facts from that source. Check the text that you removed, they were only hard facts and technical details about how the account was hacked, there was no opinions and no anti-obama ranting. First of all, sorry, I have a horrible tendency to completely miss talk page discussion and make edits that they are discussing. (Well, apart from my comment there, that is!)

Some of what Malkin says can be used in the article, and she works fine as a source for relatively difficult to dispute facts. But "so that Anonymous members could exploit the opportunity by means such as downloading all emails and uploading pornography into the account"—I don't recall anything like this coming up in any reliable source I read about the incident (and I think I read at least 20/30 stories about it as part of 4chan research/doing it for lulz :-)). The anti-Obama ranting was based on other stuff said in her blog, not necessarily anything you wrote.

In general you're always welcome to revert me, but (unless you can prove me wrong in this particular case) I don't think the pornography comment should stay in the article. The rest, I'm kinda OK with (and I'll try to keep up with discussion).

Yea, that must why they wrote it :) Basically, the pornography thing is what the hacker intended Anonymous to do, but the email wasn't hacked for long enough for it to happen. As it didn't happen, it wasn't reported anywhere (btw, I can't find where on Malkin's post I found that thing about uploading pronography, and I can't find it on any of the other two sources...hum...maybe I got it mixed up from somewhere...:-/ ). Funny, that, as I was looking for a template project. I'd like to have a proof-of-concept template first, but I'd be happy to write up a proposal. Do you think this would be worth going with a full-bore Wikipedia:Time-delayed Speedy Deletion route? Or maybe just a userspace proposal, for now? Yeah, that's the only problem - and there might be another way to do it, but I drafted this based on PROD. The first template is subst'd, and calls the second (unsubst'd) while hard-coding the timestamp. Automatic tools could, in theory, hardcode that timestamp themselves, which would mean that they use the second template and not the first (subst'd) template. No idea if that's feasible or not, since I've never used anything more complicated than popups. I'll put something together and get more eyes on it. Thanks!
