How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Template:Dukes of Hamilton family tree

I was hoping that with you revert/edit on Template:Dukes of Hamilton family tree was fixing the two links to disambiguation pages. Alas... The Banner talk 14:42, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

  • @The Banner: I didn't know they needed "fixing," sorry! However, I've now pointed them to specific pages. Just so I know for future use: is linkage to a disambiguation page inherantly a problem? —GoldRingChip 14:51, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
    • Yes, link to disambiguation pages always need fixing. When linking to a disambiguation page, you do not point to an article but to a list of options where to choose from. Without guarantee that the desired link is even there. The Banner talk 16:16, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

Apple Chancery

Hi, thanks for the edit! Apple Chancery and ITC Zapf Chancery are different typefaces, they don't look that similar. I've changed the redirect to Kris Holmes' article, as it's mentioned there in more depth than on the Mac typefaces article. Hope that makes sense. Blythwood (talk) 18:05, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Timeline of Macintosh operating systems Edit

I was bold and edited the Timeline of Macintosh operating systems to split out latest supported processor architecture. Since you were the last editor of this timeline, I figured I should give you a heads-up to double-check this edit. 108.172.251.190 (talk) 03:33, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for creating the article. One comment: Our Campaigns is considered a generally unreliable source, an alternative would be better. Kind regards

"Tom Reynolds (Disambiguation)" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect Tom Reynolds (Disambiguation) and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 August 24#Tom Reynolds (Disambiguation) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. An article you recently created, List of viceregal representatives of Charles III, is not suitable as written to remain published. It has inconsistencies as to verb tense and the gender of the monarch. I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:36, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Reverting edits

Is there any particular reason you reverted my edits on Charles III? It seems logical to detail Charles's appointment as Prince of Wales in the lead. That's what is done for his great-uncle Edward VIII and his great-grandfather George V anyways. Векочел (talk) 00:38, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Sfn templates at Elizabeth II

Please stop that formatting. Converting them all to sfn refs is going to result in Wikipedia:Citation overkill. If you wish to change the formatting, please retain the citation bundling per Wikipedia:CITEBUNDLE. DrKay (talk) 16:43, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

WP:CITEVAR is a guideline

Please do not go around altering the citation style of articles to match your personal preference. (t · c) buidhe 03:12, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

  • I should add that it's a good thing, IMO, to clean up citations on an article with references that are inconsistent or incomplete (eg. bare urls) even if that means changing some of them, but please avoid going to an article that already has a well established citation style like Armenian genocide and making that type of change without consensus. (t · c) buidhe 03:15, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

WP:CITEVAR ... again

You've been asked in the past to not go in and impose your own preferences on articles. Please stop doing it to articles that have an established citation style and that are NOT inconsistent, just so it can conform to what you'd like. Ealdgyth (talk) 19:23, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Thomas Cromwell bibliography

Hi

This edit by ProveIt broke two references. British History Online is a huge resource and removing the urls, just leaving the catalogue page, renders the references useless. I've only found and fixed two so far, but Thomas Cromwell is a very long article and it's going to take me a while.--AntientNestor (talk) 17:42, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Template:Family tree of the Wives of Henry VIII

Hi, Template:Family tree of the Wives of Henry VIII has undefined {{sfn}} references, "Poupardin 1911", "Richardson I 2011" and "Richardson III 2011". This places it, and any articles it is used in, into Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. It also means nobody can look up the references to see if they support the content. I thought I might be able to fix them myself by referring back to the article Wives of Henry VIII but it appears that they were undefined there too. This is a common problem with short form references such as those using sfn. DuncanHill (talk) 11:30, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
