Uniblue

Hi GoodDay, I have just uploaded an article on Uniblue which another contributor has found to be spammy. I feel that i disagree and i would like to ask you to take a look at the article and the talk page for the reasoning behind it. Also if there are spammy parts would you please advise where so that i may remove them. To the best of my knowledge though there are none and i doubt the article was even completely read before the speedy deletion tag... Thank you for your time and help Keithmonti (talk) 09:22, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I'll have to defer to somebody else, as I don't know what a Uniblue is. GoodDay (talk) 09:24, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you :) Keithmonti (talk) 09:53, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Nationalities

Hi. Can I suggest you stop taking things out of articles when you already know you'll be reverted. These edits could be regarded as pointy and disruptive. You've already tried to gather support for your proposals on WP:BIOG. They failed. So trying to advance your argument from another angle, across a multiple "test" articles, is not going to convince anyone, and simply looks like an attempt to circumvent consensus. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 20:29, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I've no intentions of edit-warring on those articles. I don't have the know-how to create my examples on those talkpages, so I made my deletions so they'd be in the article history - for editors to review. GoodDay (talk) 20:31, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
PS, my newiest ideas are slightly different from what I proposed at WP:BIOG. GoodDay (talk) 20:32, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I appreciate that, but people are going to suspect you are aiming for the same end result, something that was soundly rejected the first time around. If you think what you're now suggesting is more palatable, then why not suggest it in the same place, before getting people's gander up about your edits? --Escape Orbit (Talk) 20:36, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm considering it in the future, but these 2 or 3 examplers will suffice. PS: It's irrelevant to me, as to whether I get anybody's gander up; TBH. GoodDay (talk) 20:40, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Editing something to create a record when you know it will be reverted is clearly disruptive GoodDay, use the talk pages --Snowded TALK 04:35, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
I didn't know how to create my examples on the talkpage. Besides, I've no intentions of edit-warring. GoodDay (talk) 04:50, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

Ani

You've been mentioned on ani[1]. I felt it necessary to raise recent issues spilling over from the interaction between yourself and Dai with the wider sysop community--Cailil talk 02:45, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Okie Dokie. I'll let Daicaregos respond there 'first'. As it's his latest actions, which has brought his & my interaction problems to this point & he (apparently) has more gripes against me. GoodDay (talk) 02:47, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

The titles 'State President of South Africa' and 'President of South Africa' are actually separate offices, as the Presidency replaced the State Presidency in 1994, when F.W. de Klerk's term ended with Nelson Mandela's inauguration.

Why the list of State Presidents has been duplicated on the article about the Presidents of South Africa beggars belief. It is totally nonsensical. - (203.211.71.37 (talk) 21:12, 23 November 2011 (UTC))

Agreed, they're seperate offices. GoodDay (talk) 21:14, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Montreal Canadiens

As previously discussed, if you would like to remove the French name of the team from the infobox (and the article), please propose this on the discussion page. Introducing a French misspelling does not further your desire to establish a guideline on dropping accents from English words; it just misspells French. Is there a particular reason you reintroduced your previous edit? isaacl (talk) 01:08, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Agreed. You know better, GoodDay. There aren't many explanations for that edit beyond a desire to be disruptive. Resolute 02:03, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Cool off, gentlemen. GoodDay (talk) 03:49, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
I was in the midst of cleaning out diacritics from NHL team articles (Anaheim was a mess) & over-did it. If I was trying to move the french version from the infobox, I would've went to the discussion page. GoodDay (talk) 04:05, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Martin Höhener

Why don't you want to rename this page? His real name has diacritics, even though American sports press never use them. How the article is currently named is totally false. German names (for example Gerhard Schröder, Hermann Göring, Ernst Röhm) often have diacritics. If you don't want to rename how I ask you, ask the whole English Wikipedia to rename every articles from Germany which contain diacritics! BE CONSISTENT! Kind regards Chollux (talk) 22:22, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Go the RM route, please. GoodDay (talk) 22:23, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Please provide an edit summary for your edits

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary for your edits. Doing so helps everyone understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. -- SchreyP (messages) 18:19, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

You need to get out more - seriously!

I've just looked at your contributions history for the past few days. Top-tip from a (mostly) neutral observer - take a wiki break before you begin to adversely affect your health; both physical and mental. It will all still be here when you get back. You keep this up, you'll crash'n'burn - I've seen it happen; see Boiling frog. Endrick Shellycoat 16:48, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Hahahahaha, today Wikipedia, tomorrow the World. GoodDay (talk) 20:05, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Queen Margrethe of Denmark

Please note the correct spelling of the Queen of Denmark's name is Margrethe, not Margaret. You changed it to Margaret in the frequently viewed article on Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on 13 November without including an edit comment and the error has only just been detected. - Ipigott (talk) 08:13, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Breach of 3RR

Three strikes and you are out. The onus is on YOU to partake in discussion on the Talk page if you wish to change longstanding consensus:

Mais oui! (talk) 12:39, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

GoodDay, despite my better judgement I'm replying to your infantile Edit summary: unlike yourself, that User has a long, long record of constructive, useful edits. You have an utterly appalling record of blatanly disruptive behaviour, with zero silver lining. I disagree with User:Tim! on some basic points, but I respect him. Therein lies your key weakness as an editor: virtually noone likes or respects your "work". Mais oui! (talk) 12:47, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I haven't breached 3RR on either of those 2 articles. Furthermore, your admitting to being biased towards me, via your reverts (noting your comments on editor Tim!), is most troubling. GoodDay (talk) 13:02, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Given you can't seem to tear yourself away from a PC, can you spend 20 minutes watching this...

STV

Your lack of understanding of the nature of the albeit unwritten constitution of the UK seems to be forever landing you in hot water. Your inability to pigeon-hole Scotland, England, Wales & NI into something resembling Quebec, British Columbia, Nova Scotia or wherever is a real problem for you. Try reading/watching/listening instead of charging off trying to enforce 'consistency' between apples and oranges. (yes they're both fruit - but that's where the similarity ends).Endrick Shellycoat 23:25, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

British & United Kingdom, are not 'dirty words'. GoodDay (talk) 03:09, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
"GoodDay"? More like Good Grief given that response. Keep tilting at windmills if you must. Those with even a modicum of understanding on the subject will be only too happy to keep the articles on the straight and narrow; despite your best efforts.Endrick Shellycoat 08:33, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
It's always a struggle to present a NPoV on those articles. GoodDay (talk) 12:10, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Note

GoodDay, please think about what James and Jeanne are saying here[2][3][4]. Making mass changes without a consensus to do so is going to be contentious. Casting aspersions about other people's motivations in the middle of these disputes escalates what is just a content issue into a poisonous personal conflict. This can't keep reoccurring.
I've counseled you previously on how contentious matters should be handled[5] in order to inspire maximum co-operation even (or especially) from those who disagree. I'd suggest considering this again. As an overall note GD please stop talking about other editors, and generally tone down the rhetoric about other opinions and perspectives please (these kinds of comments can be unnecessarily divisive & lead to unnecessary conflict). This project is here explicitly for co-operation between people from different backgrounds, who have different perspectives and who may disagree, but who collaborate despite these differences--Cailil talk 18:17, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm discouraged with the attitudes around those articles. I likely wouldn't have bothered grumping about the reverts at the FM articles, if Mais oui! hadn't of contacted me. I had already moved on, to the next thing. GoodDay (talk) 18:27, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Re: your recent edits on Henry Clay

Yes, the information on the Presidents and successors/predecessors was not in the Infobox but there's a reason for that. Henry Clay used to have probably the longest Infobox in Wikipedia (as seen here). The length of the Infobox has been discussed before on Talk:Henry Clay, at least here and (most recently) here.
A couple of thoughts on adding more information to this particular Infobox:

  • I tried to do a hide-show on this Infobox but apparently some mobile devices have issues loading infoboxes when the settings are toggled into those type of parameters, as I tried to do here and which was adjusted to this color scheme and then subsequently reverted by User:CMAH/User:Connormah with this edit
  • Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes, Infoboxes should contain key facts contained in the article, but the only place that Barbour, Cheves, Varnum and Madison are mentioned in the article is in the present Infobox and Monroe is mentioned within the article not as the US President but because of his connection with attending the first meeting of the American Colonization Society.
  • In the MoS, it says the less information infoboxes contain the better (see here).

So, with all that as a preamble, I would like to discuss keeping/removing the information added to the article in your edits here and here. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 18:55, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Recommend we keep Prez Madison & Monroe, in the infobox. But remove the other Speakers. GoodDay (talk) 19:05, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I'll see how that looks...the Infobox in its previous state was causing a lot of bunching so I'd like to keep it as short as possible. Shearonink (talk) 19:10, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Australian High Court judges

Hi there -- Australia's Governor-General appoints judges, not the Queen: section 72 of the Constitution. --Mkativerata (talk) 07:50, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

The Australian monarch appoints them, not the Governor-General. Note it says -GG-in-council. GoodDay (talk) 07:50, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
That does not mean they are appointed by the Queen. It means the GG appoints them on advice of the Executive Council. This explains all. --Mkativerata (talk) 08:16, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
If you wish to revert all my changes to the Chief Justices & Puisine Justices bio infoboxes - then fine. GoodDay (talk) 08:19, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
What on earth are you doing, two days later reverting them back to their erroneous state? --Mkativerata (talk) 07:20, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
You stopped replacing 'monarch' with 'governor-general' & thus left the articles inconsistant. GoodDay (talk) 07:22, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
That's a reason to fix the rest, not to make sure they're all wrong. BTW I corrected all judged from the last 20 years. The reason I have paused is that before then, it's hard to keep making assumptions about which G-G appointed a particular judge based on dates alone. So I'm thinking about how best to deal with that. --Mkativerata (talk) 07:22, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
The Governor-General represent the Australian monarch. Thus my reason for placing the monarch as the appointer. It's the same thing with Canada, New Zealand & the other Commonwealth realms. GoodDay (talk) 07:26, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
That view betrays a dangerous misunderstanding of Australia's Constitution, the relevant provisions of which I have already pointed out to you. The Queen has her own powers under Australia's Constitution (section 2); the Governor-General is very specifically and personally vested the power to appoint judges. --Mkativerata (talk) 07:28, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Section 72 is relevant: The Justices of the High Court and of the other courts created by the Parliament-- (i.) Shall be appointed by the Governor-General in Council.[6] That means the Governor-General as advised by his ministers. The Queen is not mentioned, and does not have the power to appoint judges. The role of the Governor-General goes beyond mere representation of the Queen. As was made plain in 1975, the powers of the Australian sovereign are extremely limited. Now, GoodDay, you know better than this. Why are you introducing error into Wikipedia? --Pete (talk) 16:44, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Everything is alright. I've already replaced the Monarch with the Governors-General. GoodDay (talk) 16:47, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I believe you're mistaken

your statement here: "NHL based article = no diacritics in player names" seems to contradict the statement here: "All non-North American hockey pages should have diacritics applied (where required)." Granted that's related to page notice, but there are other instances of diacritics on the page and unless you can show me a policy I say you're mistaken and should undo the edit. Copying to the article's talk page. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:41, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

1 month wiki-break?

I think it is exactly what you need; far too much of your day is spent here and I stand by my comments on the main page of the RfC/U. I don't think you're a bad person, but I really do think you need to get away from here for a bit for your own sake. Forums and online collaberations of this kind can become addictive and are poor substitutes for their 'real world' equivalents. If you find you don't have the will power to stay away for a mere 4 weeks then I think you may well have a case of IAD. Read [this], it may be of interest. Seriously, take a break, and enjoy it when you do. Regards. Endrick Shellycoat 02:29, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Hullo, Padawan

Shall we get this ball rolling, then? The way I see this going is quite informal (as you might imagine). I took a look through Mr Zhang's "process", and it looks like you'll know a lot of that. I'll have a deeper look at that and other resources to see if we can eventually agree some "process" to show folks just how reformed a character you are. The first thing I might suggest you could do is wrapping up the RfC in a manner which satisfies your detractors that you have humbled yourself satisfactorily. (I'm afraid there may have to be a certain amount of falling on your sword.) The number one thing I'd like you to remember is that I am and will remain essentially "on your side" – you are valued as a major contributor to this 'paedia and a fellow-editor of mine. Only a slight tweak in your apparent overall attitude will be required to get our fellows off your back so that you (and they) can get on with the business of editing. Onwards, dear friend! DBD 20:26, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, if having co-mentors is aloud, I'll accept that. GoodDay (talk) 22:47, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
@DBD, my adoption "process" is more designed for newbies who need an intro to Wikipedia. Some still learn quite a bit from it. But I agree that it doesn't quite work for mentorships. Not something I've really done before, but let's see how it goes. Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 22:55, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

TBH, I still suspect devolutionist motivations in those British & Irish political articles. However, the idea is to change my editing/conduct habits - not my beliefs. GoodDay (talk) 00:15, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
(ec) Just as an addendum FYI, I suggested that GoodDay take a break from articles relating to nationality and constititional issues for a month or so, while we get things sorted out, and then go from there. He agrees, so I think we can move forward. Still drafting a comment for the RFC page. Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 00:15, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Question

I noticed that you edit European royalty, so I was hoping you might have an idea/opinion regarding a Willem van der Haegen. On the Antipope Felix V article, an anon IP has used James H. Guill, A History of the Azores Islands,Volume 5 ,pg.139 as a source stating that a daughter, Margaride, of Amadeus VIII(later antipope Felix V) married a Willem van der Haegen, grandson of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy.[9]

Despite an exhaustive search, I have found nothing that indicates either individual(Margaride or Willem) existed. A search for James H. Guill's credentials resulted in him being mentioned as a historian of the Azores. If no other information concerning these two possibly fictitious individuals exists, should I remove the information?

Do you know of any reputable sites/books that could be consulted? I have searched Leo van de Pas site with no luck. Thanks. --Kansas Bear (talk) 19:55, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Re: Gustaf Adolf

Hey GoodDay.

You say: "In the infobox, the Monarch's title is always shown". But he wasn't a monarch, was he? Can you point me to a guideline, and does that guideline refer to the "protagonist" (so to speak) or does it refer to his parents?

HandsomeFella (talk) 07:52, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

By using Gustav VI Adolf 'position' at the time of his eldest son's death (i.e. Crown Prince), you'd create the erroneous impression that Gustav VI Adolf 'never' got to be King. GoodDay (talk) 07:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, is another example. GoodDay (talk) 08:02, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Since it also said "(later King Gustaf VI Adolf)" in the infobox, such an impression would not be possible for anyone who can read. But I'll leave it as it is, since there are other similar occurrences, e.g. Prince Alexander John of Wales, besides your example. HandsomeFella (talk) 10:29, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

English Wikipedia?

I'm discouraged: See Portland Winterhawks (NHL Entry draft section), WP:HOCKEY's latest diacritics discussion, João V of Portugal, João VI of Portugal - (for a few examples). GoodDay (talk) 19:10, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Let it never be said that you are not melodramatic. As this world becomes more internationalized, I think we will all have to learn to cope with odd spellings. As Wikipedia is international, we all have to share in the confusion. What seems lacking is the will to stand up and make a reasonable line in the sand. The NY Times style of using french and spanish accents seems to me to be the best and most sensible solution, but I seem to be in the middle, and in a smallish group. Omit the other diacritics as incomprehensible to anglophones. This push for correctness, and original language rights is way out of line to me. I really think that those pushing the idea refuse to see the opposing viewpoint; of course this rock-headedness also applies to those who would banish them completely. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 19:18, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I dread the day, these non-english groups start wanting entire article content changed. For instance, imagine trying to read an article with nearly every word diacriticized? GoodDay (talk) 19:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Why would we worry about an absurd and obviously impossible scenario? Other than for names, there are only a small number of loanwords that use diacritics. Resolute 19:56, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
At this point (of my discouragment), I wouldn't be surpised by how far these non-english pushers will go. GoodDay (talk) 19:59, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
If I may, an honest (and perhaps naïve) inquiry? What on earth is the basis for the objection to the inclusion of funny squiggles and accents? I mean, they're not English, that's true, but what harm do they cause? HuskyHuskie (talk) 03:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
They've no educational value & are an eye sore. Their usage is due to 'mother-tongue pride' of some editors. GoodDay (talk) 03:19, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, I've no dog in this fight, so my comments here should be taken as mere milquetoast observations:
  • The "eye sore" allegation is true if that's how one feels. It certainly seems to be a matter of opinion.
  • As far as "educational value" is concerned, I think I disagree. I've no idea how old you are, but I recall 30 years ago the fact that all three American news anchors (Rather-CBS, Jennings-ABC, and Brokaw-NBC) each pronounced differently the name of the leader of Poland's Solidarity movement, the future President of Poland, Lech Walesa.
  1. Rather pronounced it "Vuh LESS uh"
  2. Jennings pronounced it "Vuh LENSE uh", and
  3. Brokaw pronounced it "Vuh WENSE uh".
I always wondered how they could not get their shit together on such a simple name as one of the most notable people in the world. Well, anyway, about 15 years later, I was learning a bit of Polish (it's amazing what a man will do to woo a woman) and I learned that in Polish the man's name is rendered "Wałęsa". So what, you say? Well, everyone got correct that a Polish "W" is pronounced like an English "V" (which is true in many languages), but that little squiggly on the "e" actually adds an "n" sound to the short e, which explains why Jennings and Brokaw pronounced the "n" in the middle syllable. And that slash across the "l", it turns out, causes the "l" to be a different letter which sounds, not like and "l" at all, but like an English "w". Turns out that Brokaw was the only one who got it all right. And only once I learned the Polish squigglies (and that's about all I learned--I only had three lessons), the mystery was solved. So, while it certainly doesn't prove the squigglies belong in Wikipedia, it does seem to me that they do have educational value.
  • As to your observation about them being placed due to "mother-tongue pride", I would imagine that's very likely true. But how does it follow then that they should be discluded? I write most of my work about a university to which I have been connected in one way or another for four decades. Does that make my edits unacceptable? Pride is a powerful motivator to do good, sometimes.
Okay, that's all; Good Day! HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:22, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
This is the English language Wikipedia, however. French belongs on French Wikipedia, Polish belong on Polish Wikipedia, Czech belong on Czech Wikipedia' etc etc. GoodDay (talk) 04:30, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, yeah, of course you're right about that. I just don't see what harm is caused by writing "Wałęsa" instead of "Walesa". If a person knows the squigglies, he's happy, if he doesn't know them, he just ignores them. When I see a squiggly that I don't recognize (which is often; I'm only acquainted with Spanish, French, and Polish), I just read the letter the way it would read in English without a squiggly. I ignore it, and don't get why it matters to you. Oh well, I'm going in circles, and it really doesn't matter to me either way; Good Day! HuskyHuskie (talk) 05:11, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
It's alright. I'm known for my linguistic stance. GoodDay (talk) 05:13, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Not to pick on your last correspondent, I still find it surprising how people feel that we have to be -educated- about the use of language, no? Your current nemesis holds to the idea that strictly speaking, it's -wrong- to simply strip the diacritics. Yet, every day, in millions of cases, that is what is done. Do those millions care? Not really. Do they need to be changed? Is it Wikipedia's mission to do that? If people really cared that English speakers got the pronunciation right then the names would be reconstructed in English terms without the diacritics. E.g Vawesa. But they don't bother, and we don't bother either. And we all get along somehow ... ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 15:36, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Not to pick on your last correspondent, I still find it surprising how people feel that we have to be -educated- about the use of language, no?
To clarify, alaney2k, I did not say that we have to be educated about the use of language. In fact, that thought never occurred to me. I was only responding to GoodDay's statement that
[these marks ha]ve no educational value.
It immediately occurred to me that they may, in fact, sometimes have educational value, and I gave an example. That's a long way from arguing that we should do this. I am an agnostic on the issue, and am merely surprised at how strongly others feel about the matter. HuskyHuskie (talk) 03:26, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
It still buggles my mind, how anybody can/could argue for non-english usage on English Wikipedia (unless they're arguing due to 'mother tongue' pride). Imagine what it would be like, if 'entire content' of articles were written with diacritics? GoodDay (talk) 16:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Well of course it is Wikipedia's mission. As an encyclopedia it is our mission to get it right and to educate. Which is why we avoid using slang words even though they might be the most "known" to users. In the same vein we should use peoples correct name not a "slang" (for lack of a better word) version. We have a higher standard at an encyclopedia than a typical sports column. I won't even bother refuting GoodDay's non-English crap cause its has been shot down by so many people so many times to show him that diacritics are not non-English that it is truly sad that he keeps trumpeting that. -DJSasso (talk) 16:37, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Djsasso's views aren't important on the subject, Alaney2k. He's already mentioned that he doesn't care about the topic. GoodDay (talk) 16:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh but I do care about keeping xenophobic POV pushers such as yourself in check. So in that respect it does matter to me. I do think its a ridiculous topic to argue about. But as long as you keep trying to damage the wiki with your hate filled speech then yes I will be involved in the topic. -DJSasso (talk) 16:44, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Put the xenophobic charge to rest, please. The english language is used across multiple countries/cultures. GoodDay (talk) 16:45, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
That doesn't change the fact that the things you say are xenophobic. -DJSasso (talk) 16:46, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
They're not xenophobic, sorry. Now, if you're here 'merely' to provoke me? I'll have to ask my mentors on how to deal with 'you'. GoodDay (talk) 16:48, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
No you are clearly trying to provoke other users such as myself with the hate speech you spew to users who speak more languages than you do. -DJSasso (talk) 16:50, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Please leave (concerning this topic). We're not ever going to agree, so your presence & argumentation 'here', can only be viewed as provocation & harassment. GoodDay (talk) 16:53, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Not when you posted here first disparaging me prior to my commenting. That would be you provoking. -DJSasso (talk) 16:58, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I'll ask you one more time -- STOP harassing me. GoodDay (talk) 16:59, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
GoodDay has the right to control the content posted to his talk page. If he has requested for an editor stop posting here, then that editor must follow his request. I have seen examples where other editors have been blocked for continuing to harass and bait users after they have been requested to stop. I know that some administrators may believe that they are above being sanctioned for disruptive editing. I certainly hope that is not the case. 17:09, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Actually users can't ban users from their talk pages. I know other editors have explained that to you in the past. As long as he continues to make accusations about me or others on his page. We have the right to defend ourselves on his page. He is more than welcome to remove this whole section if he chooses and then the discussion is closed. But editing only parts of it is against talk page guidelines. -DJSasso (talk) 17:19, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Or you could exercise some self-control and consideration. Squabbling is so very childish. Not to mention tiresome. DBD 18:05, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Diacritics & Ice Hockey

Given our latest flair up (Djsasso & myself). I'd agree to an interaction ban & a voluntary topic ban from ice hockey articles (for a designated period of time), for both of us. GoodDay (talk) 19:51, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

See the below discussion. Sometimes it's best to keep your thoughts to yourself. It has gotten you into trouble quite a bit. Additionally, your personal views on topics (like diatricts) are views you are entitled to, but consensus and policy override that. There is no clear consensus on that at present, so that needs to be addressed through dispute resolution. Anyways, see below discussion. Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 20:32, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Very well. GoodDay (talk) 20:34, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Djsasso has agreed to an interaction ban with you. Additonally, you are not to make any changes relating to diacritics, broadly construed, for an indefinite period of time, as it seems to be the main issue at present with you in your interactions with other editors, and there's a pretty strong consensus about this. There are plenty of other things you can edit on Wikipedia. Lots of articles can be cleaned up. Vandalism can be reverted. Write a new article, etc etc. Djsasso has also agreed not to make changes to diacritics. I'm off to work now, I can be reached on my talk page, and I will not be actively watching this talk page (as I am working). Regards, Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 21:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I can't pipe-link/delete dios on any Ice hockey articles & Djsasso can't remove pipe-links from or add dios to any Ice hockey articles -- Understood. GoodDay (talk) 21:44, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, neither of you can do either. I think you should consider not making changes to diacritics anywhere for the time being though. Seriously, I used to do nothing but mediation, and I must say, while it's tough, article writing can be very satisfying. Google "24" without quotes. See hit number 1. An article I worked on is the number one hit on Google. :) Try it. Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 21:50, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Okie Dokie. I'm sorry that you & DBD have now both had your mentorship abilites & unbiased methods questioned, but that's in the past now. GoodDay (talk) 21:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm a big boy. I wouldn't have taken you on if I wasn't prepared to take some flak. But really, you need to help me help you, and often the easiest way to do that is to bite your tongue, and think about how someone would react if you said it to someone who would react in the worst possible way. For example, if you made a derogatory remark about someone from Isreal on an article talk page (as an example) if you said it to someone from Israel in person, they'd probably punch you in the face. So of course, you wouldn't say it.

That's generally how I try and act. And that's what we're here for. We're here to guide you, but not to be your advocates. As a kid, I wasn't very controlled, and I rarely considered the consequences of my actions. A child psychologist taught me something very simple, they called it "Stop, Think, Go" and I use it to this day. In short, before you do something, stop, think about what you're doing, and if you're sure it's right, then go ahead and do it. If you're not, then ask us.

I'm more than happy to help you edit other areas, and I am sure DBD is in agreement. Building content is a great leveller. How about the three of us work on an article that you're interested in and get it to GA status? Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 22:07, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

I can always help you with that, I'm sure DBD can as well. As for the article, it's up to you. What stuff interests you? For example, I'm a crazy obsessed fan of the TV series 24, but I also love my cricket. What interests you? There's no point editing an article you don't have some interest in (though my first edit ever was a grammar fix to Lenin's Mausoleum). Weird, huh? A M*A*S*H fan, eh? I have no idea why I'm wasting my time talking to you, but I'll give it a try. I can't remember a single moment when you were actually useful. I just can't. Your comments are either offensive or simply childish. Your quest against diacritics is almost comical. What's the deal with "~"? Childhood trauma? Why don't you start working on articles for real? And do you know what really upsets me? Is that if Jimbo Walles had supported your point of view you would be right now showing everybody. Since he supported me, you've kept your mouth shut. Not only that, you, SergeWoodzing and that Waaharazing... something, I can't remember his name, have lied from the begining to the end and have caused one major hell for nothing, for an article that none of you actually care. And you don't need to ask me sto stop complaing about your offensive comments. Just stop making them. --Lecen (talk) 21:43, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Lecen, go away & in future, stop accusing me of xenophobia & prejudice. GoodDay (talk) 21:45, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Come now, Lecen. It's no wonder GoodDay gets a bit irked at times? Do I support it? No. But comments like these definitely don't help GoodDay cease and desist, do they? Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 21:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
BTW Lecen, I stopped commenting at Jimbo's because of the aforementioned attacks 'there'. GoodDay (talk) 22:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Whoa. I missed all the action. I post a comment here and you and Djsasso go ballistic. I'm sorry that I helped to set that off. I should have expected that Djsasso is watching your talk page. You two are not good for each other. It is almost like you two are the opposite ends of the spectrum. Matter and anti-matter. I'm glad you have a mentor, that's pretty cool. Maybe you'll be able to get more of your points through with his help. As a sincere suggestion, I don't think you're being effective with your current style when it comes to the debates. I think people just want to throw s**t at you. Commenting on Wales' page, that seems sort of 'last-ditch.' That said, I'm not so effective either at changing minds. (Ask my exes about that!) I hope you're cooling off with a brandy or beer or something. My nerves would be frazzled. Hey, my Sens are doing real well. MacLean looks like a genius right now. We'll see at season's end, though. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 05:06, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

I made 2 or 3 edits on hockey related articles 'since' the last spat, but I feel I'm done with those (I removed all hockey related articles from my watchlist). It's gotten to the point where one's watching a show that's suppose to be in english, but instead the audio is French/Czech/Swedish/Finnish/Portuguese etc etc. I've even removed the recent RM (I started) from my watchlist. It's not easy being an english-only reading/speaking layman editor, here on Multiple language Wikipedia. GoodDay (talk) 05:16, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
It's an indication of the importance of this wiki that people feel that they have to get the original spellings to be the one being used. There is also the aspect of trying to right some perceived wrongs and some perceived missions. So those are some committed people. If it really was an English-only wiki then it probably would be less interesting. There are a lot of articles here that are not even on the other language wikis. I used to have a lot of articles on my watchlist, but sometimes it's best not to be so much on top of things. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 15:32, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
It's all in the numbers, if (for example) 8 out 10 editors at WP:HOCKEY, were against using diacritics, the situation would've been settled 'long ago'. Masterhatch barely bothers with hockey articles anymore, Ravenswing seems discouraged about the diacritics topic aswell & Resolute has transferred to the 'neutral zone'. As for me? the hockey articles (concerning dios) aren't big enough for both myself & my 'opponent'. GoodDay (talk) 17:04, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure if the rest of us are losing out. :-) Why not simply work on the things like captains, championships, etc. like you've always done, and just put up notices or notify editors about articles, etc. that contravene the conventions, etc. that you find. I for one, would find that useful. The question is: Can you stay away from the discussions that heat you up? ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 17:26, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
I can stay away from those diacritics discussions around hockey articles 'easily'. If my 'opponent' is already in such a discussion, I won't get involved or if my 'opponent' joins such a discussion that I'm already in, then I'll drop out of it. Even though the interaction ban means he & I can be in the same dios discussion (as long as we don't respond to each other directly), we'd only end up commenting on each other in such a discussion -- which would eventually lead to another flair up. I believe the 'core' of our fights, is those bleeping dios still being used on the 'birthplaces' at the NHL team rosters (in breach of WP:HOCKEY's compromise). GoodDay (talk) 17:33, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Anyways, he & I have both agreed to 'stay away' from the dios topic at the hockey articles, until English Wikipedia reaches a consensus on their usage/non-usage. GoodDay (talk) 17:35, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

The UK, Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England

Forgive me if this is out of place. But after going through some of your talk pages it seems you have issues with how the above mentioned places are defined. As a Briton, let me try and explain it for you using facts, not opinion. I am aware that much of what I say you will already know, but regardless I am going to start from the start.

The British Isles is the name given to the collection of islands including Great Britain and Ireland. Great Britain is the physical island that consists of Scotland, Wales and England. People from these places are 'British', much like anyone from North America is 'North American'. However, the people of Britain often identify themselves as 'Scottish', or 'English' (depending on where they are from), rather than 'British'. This is perfectly correct, and they have the right to call themselves this instead of 'British', just as you would call yourself a 'Canadian', instead of a 'North American'.

The United Kingdom is the political union of the Nations of Britain and Northern Ireland. People from the republic of Ireland are not part of the United Kingdom.

Now here is the part I think you have the biggest problem with.

I'll start with these definitions as given by the Oxford Dictionary:

Nation: a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular state or territory:
Country: a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory

The United Kingdom, as previously mentioned, is made up of the Nations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These are definitely nations - they all include a large body of people that are united by their own common descent etc. and they inhabit a particular territory. Scotland has it's own devolved government - The Scottish Parliament. This, by definition, makes it a country. Northern Ireland has it's own devolved government - The Northern Ireland Assembly. This, by definition, makes it a country. Wales has it's own own devolved government - The National Assembly for Wales. This, by definition, makes it a country.

I have seen you mention before that these places are not countries, but constituent countries making up one larger country. But this, deduced from the facts above, is incorrect. Each 'constituent country' as you call them is, by itself, a country. It just so happens that all of these countries are part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - A UNION, not a country. The Union itself is presided over by the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - which is NOT the government of a singular country. By accepting to be a part of the Union, each country of the UK must accept the laws of the UK Parliament, but it would be possible for any one of the countries to secede and become independent, with their current government remaining intact. Since it is possible for countries to secede with their respective governments remaining intact, it makes sense to conclude that Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are all countries in their own right - not sub-countries or just 'nations'.

92.22.12.224 (talk) 06:31, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm currently volunteering to stay clear of that topic, until January 17, 2012. GoodDay (talk) 06:33, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Dear IP. And yet the British nation is also just that – a nation. Personally, my nationality is British – I do not feel particularly English – which it appears is what you are saying matters. Therefore the British nation has its country (by your definition) – the UK. What a pickle, eh? DBD 18:08, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
DBD, could it be that you are saying . . . (gasp) . . . the IP may not be the ultimate authority on this matter? But I was about to petition for the admission of Louisiana to the United Nations! HuskyHuskie (talk) 03:11, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
The reason I don't believe Louisiana to be a country is due to the fact it shares it's history with the rest of the US - it was never its own country, whereas Scotland has been independent for the majority of it's existence - officially around 1000AD (but more likely around 843AD) to 1707AD is over 800 years. This is not including the fact that the initial Roman presence of Great Britain recognised the area that is now Scotland as separate from the rest of the island. Also, Scotland has no place in the UN as it is represented the the government of the United Kingdom, the same way Louisiana is represented through the USA. However that doesn't mean Scotland is not its own country. 92.22.18.112 (talk) 00:35, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Scotland is a country within a country, which is a clear definition of constituent country. Also, since constituent country is a description option for England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland - I choose to use that description. GoodDay (talk) 01:15, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
I think it's clear that this is a muddy affair, no matter who's defining the terms, and that honest people can disagree on the matter. HuskyHuskie (talk) 02:28, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes it is. That is why GoodDay gets into trouble when those citizens from the UK stress their individual nation status (English, Scottish, Welch or Irish) instead of the union. Just a question, does the European Union accepted the four individual countries or did it accepted the United Kingdom? Raul17 (talk) 02:44, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
The United Kingdom has only one membership in the UN. GoodDay (talk) 14:11, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

By the IP's definition, it would appear that England isn't a country. (And personally I prefer the definition that to be a country, you need your own airline and your own beer...) BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 15:40, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Constituent country is a better descriptive. GoodDay (talk) 15:45, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Until a majority of editors on the related articles start agreeing with me, there's little I can do. Atleast, it's mentioned in the Constituent countries of the United Kingdom article ;) GoodDay (talk) 01:55, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, one out of five gets you at least $1 million contract in baseball! I think Gov. Perry would get the Repulican nomination before these editors agree with you, sadly to say! Raul17 (talk) 03:39, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
No argument there. GoodDay (talk) 03:36, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Formal mediation has been requested

The Mediation Committee has received a request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to "Liam Neeson". As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. Mediation is a voluntary process which resolves a dispute over article content by facilitation, consensus-building, and compromise among the involved editors. After reviewing the request page, the formal mediation policy, and the guide to formal mediation, please indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Because requests must be responded to by the Mediation Committee within seven days, please respond to the request by 24 January 2012.

Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page. Thank you.

Nay. I'll let the others continue to dispute/discuss the matter. He's an actor who was born in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom & that's good enough for me. GoodDay (talk) 02:57, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Wow! I think I will get some mentors! How did I missed Pipa & Sopa?!! Raul17 (talk) 04:16, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Euphemism ?

Is all you can see about the AE report is broken links?? Hopefully tad sloppy is a euphemism. Mo ainm~Talk 14:56, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

I've no interest in the arguments of the reports (on both sides), just the sloppiness. Yesterday, I had to fix up links from ONIH & Sono's reports. GoodDay (talk) 15:03, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

How's things?

Haven't heard from you for a while (though perhaps that means there haven't been any dramas?) How are things going? Steven Zhang Join the DR army! 22:49, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Quite well. I've dabbled into a couple of British/Irish things, but only briefly & certaintly non-disruptively. For the most part, I've been ghnoming away. Mind you, I became frustrated over recent developments at WP:HOCKEY - thus giving myself a reminder of why I resigned my membership from that WikiProject. GoodDay (talk) 00:38, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia numbering

GoodDay, someone is changing the numbering of the Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia. As it was you, I believe, that added the numbers to each article, I thought you might want to be made aware of these pretty sweeping changes. Best, --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 15:23, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Are his changes accurately following NS sources? GoodDay (talk) 15:31, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Welsh language

Hi GoodDay. Here we are again. You must have been aware that your removing the fact that Welsh is spoken in Wales from the infobox would be controversial. Please give enough time for a concensus to develop on the talk page before making a change. Also, your bold move was reverted (enjoyed the edit summary, btw), which should have resulted in discussion on the talk page rather than reverting to your version. I note you had made no previous edits to Welsh language. Please advise the circumstances that caused you to arrive at that article. If you intend to improve it then you are welcome. However, given your history you will forgive me if I have my doubts. You were supposed to be being mentored. What went wrong. Daicaregos (talk) 08:47, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

I've already contacted my mentors about my showing up at that article & the likelihood that you were going to raise opposition to my proposed changes. Anyways, having just faced what appears to be hostility here & at that article's talkpage, it's obvious that 'the wall' still controls those articles & that British & United Kingdom are treated as taboo terms. GoodDay (talk) 15:19, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
If you can't see why those edits were troublesome and were always going to be controversial, I don't think you can be trusted to control yourself. Blaming the problem on other editors, and hostility, shows an unwillingness to accept when you're wrong. Being invited to present a logical argument based on facts and policies, and then copping out with excuses of hostility points to little or no argument to back up your edits. We've been here too many times in the past and I don't see why the community needs to tolerate this behaviour. Perhaps a formal topic ban is the only way to prevent this disruption. I'm interested to hear what your mentors have to say on this. --HighKing (talk) 17:57, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm already under a virtual 'topic ban' concerning those articles; have been for years. When was the last time, a proposal of mine got adopted on those articles-in-question? I can't recall. I accept the exitance of 'the Wall' & therefore I'm not pursuing my proposal at the Welsh language article's infobox - even though United Kingdom is shown in the Scottish, Irish & English langues articles infoboxes.
