The Military history WikiProject coordinator selection process is starting. We are looking to elect seven coordinators to serve for the next six months; if you are interested in running, please sign up here by August 11!

This is an automated delivery by grafikbot - 18:39, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And might I be so forward as to suggest that you nominate yourself? :-) Kirill Lokshin 21:27, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, that's an interesting coincidence ;-) Kirill Lokshin 12:15, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your threats against Piotrus

[edit]

I see you insist on building a phony case against one of the few editors who had the guts to stand up to Ghirlandajo's harassment? I would suggest you look into Ghirnadajo's edit history (including his most recent announcement) for loads of actual "blatant" personal attacks, directed at the whole community. More newspeak and turning the tables around hoping to turn attention away from the actual problem on our hands, i.e. Ghirlandajo's incivility towards other users? Pathetic. All you forgot to add was a threat of defrocking, your dearest editor's ultimate dream of admins who stands up to his abuse. -Modest username

I do not comment personal attacks. If someone wants me to exhaust my patience, he or she will see that I have more of it. -- Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 16:28, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Im surprised at your violent verbal campaign against others in your defence of Ghirlandajo's incivility. Anyway, hope to see you return to military matters shortly when this blows over, where your efforts would be more productive than defending a lost case. Ghirlandajo just needs to change his antics. If you felt offended by my comments, forgive me, I apologise, but you are actually doing more harm to Ghirlandajo- it's in his own good that he smarten up. Regards. 83.5.247.158 16:34, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Youre kind of missing the point... while the comment alone mightnt have warranted a block, it was the proverbial drop in the bucket to Ghirlandajo's abuse spree, or "bridge too far", as you'd put it? Repeat offenders receive less tolerance. 83.5.247.158 16:48, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My aplogies

[edit]

For the misunderstanding, explained on the public page where the potentially offensive comment was made, I apologize again for the confusion. You are a very civil editor and I didn't meant to suggest otherwise, my reply was meant for Calgacus (both refer to him and Ghirla).-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  16:42, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Vacation

[edit]

I'll take care of the first two issues. The final one—the bot tagging—I'm not entirely sure on; WP:AN seems like a bad place to discuss such things, and the corresponding discussion of scope on the project page seems to have gone nowhere. I'll see if I can come up with something appropriate in that regard.

Enjoy your vacation! Kirill Lokshin 22:22, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Newsletter delivery by Bot

[edit]

I notice your bot looks after the automated delivery of MilHist's newletter delivery - could it do a similar thing for us at WP:NOVELS we have a similar setup with monthly newsletters going to a membership with a few exclusions. Are you able to help. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:17, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, being the beginning of Sept we are due for a new newsletter very soon, what do we need to do to get your BOT activated to send this. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you able to take acount of the inclusions / exclusions and type of delivery as mentioned here Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/Outreach#Delivery_options. Thanks. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:05, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, we are ready for this months delivery - It is a go for Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/Outreach/Newsletter_September_2006. Thanks. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re Is there a way to have the Service awards picture with a white or transparent background? It would be better I think... :)

  • Sorry to be so late getting back you... the answer is yes, it could be done fairly easily, and yes, it might well be better, BUT I haven't gotten around to trying it yet... I will soon and if it looks better I'll change them... thanks for the suggestion. Herostratus 16:54, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

First of all, I wanted to thank you for your great copyediting of Battle of Königsberg. It really is better now :)

Second, impressed by your work, I have a favor to ask :) Can your spare a few minutes of your time and have a look at Aleksandr Vasilevsky. This article is currently FAC but some style issue were pointed out and I would like an external point of view to fix some things. Can you please do that?

Thanks in advance, Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 13:52, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grafikm_fr

I'm sorry for the late response. I've looked through the article several times and I actually do not see any deficiencies. I'm not sure exactly of what style issues were pointed out. I think it is a good article. --Rifleman 82 07:08, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Grafikm. I have rewritten the article. It is now a much better and clearer and is now also fully sourced. If you the time and/or inclination, I would be interested to see if you think it has improved, is less Anglo-centric, and deserving of FA status. Thanks. Re: Battle of Moscow

[edit]

Mmm, it's got piles of grammar problems throughout; given the project's previous issues with prose, I thought it might be appropriate to focus some more on it before the obligatory FAC complaints. (Not to worry, though. A copyedit or two, and it'll easily be A-Class.) Kirill Lokshin 16:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on it. It's probably going to take me a few days to get through the entire article because of family demands. It took me an hour to work through the intro this morning. But, it's a great article and I look forward to helping get it ready for FA nomination. By the way, were any other Axis nations involved in the battle, such as Italy, Bulgaria, Romania or Hungary? If so, perhaps their countries should also be listed in the info box. Cla68 22:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I didn't leave a message about this before--I just barely finished racing through the last section before I had to run. I like what Cla68 did with the intro. I might get a better look at it again tomorrow with fresh eyes. So far though, fantastic article! Thanks for letting me read through it. And sorry for the in-line comments (I personally hate that when people do that to articles), but as I said, I was in a bit of a hurry and it was easier to put them there when I remembered them than going through it again later. --ScreaminEagle 01:50, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I finished my copyedit. Hopefully I didn't make anything worse. Cla68 22:19, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Grafikm,

:) Bien cordialement, --Playtime 12:03, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for all your help with this! Kirill Lokshin 00:09, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work, as usual. Incidentally, you might want to take a look at the stub-tagging discussion on WT:MILHIST; if we can get that issue resolved, we should be able to make a stronger case for letting the bot run through these. Kirill Lokshin 14:19, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Estimates

[edit]

The talk page didn't prove that it's a myth, but it indeed is far too exaggerated. Check User talk:Ghirlandajo's last message from me. Are there sources proving that he wrote 27,000 in his memories? I don't have the book so I can't tell, but if he indeed wrote 1,000,000, it should be in the article. --Pudeo 20:06, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see, well, just to let you know, I created a thread to AxisHistory forums about it. [1] I think the people there know very much about World War II, and provide sources with their comments. I will see if someone replies something interesting and provides sources / information. --Pudeo 20:24, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Some help needed

[edit]

Meh. Unless he actually starts edit-warring over the issue, I'm not sure I see the need to beat him over the head with it. It seems to me that his revert was done in good faith, even if the version he preferred wasn't necessarily the better one.

If he does it again, though, please let me know. Kirill Lokshin 14:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Moscow FAC

[edit]

I didn't think it was a problem, that's why I didn't object. I've never read those memoirs, so I'll take your word for it and regard them as reliable, although as students of history we are taught to shy away from memoirs as much as we can. Nevertheless, I have removed that part of my comment. It just reads "Good article" now, and this most definitely is a terrific article. Congratulations for that.UberCryxic 16:06, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Project ADF

[edit]

Which would be fine, except... the projects haven't been merged! The last attempt to do so (~2 months ago?) proved to be a spectacular failure; I don't know that circumstances have changed enough to try it again. Kirill Lokshin 18:08, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

rapid footnote system

[edit]

I read you are a bit into programming and know about the problems of writing history articles. Actually I do have an idea that might help to improve quality, but I want to refine some points with the help of someone more knowledgeable on technical details. Therefore I ask you.

Currently, making a footnote in a wikipedia article is a painstacking procedure. on the other hand footnotes seem the best way to determine quality of articles.

My idea is to create a (seperate) formula for filling in footnotes at the current cursor position in the edited text when given the command. The automatic formula does list all position possible (or considered possible, etc.) to fill in for a footnote. Furthermore it needs an archiving function and it should have the possibility to recall easily from a selection of former footnotes for minor changes like page numbers. Considering the multiple possibilities to integrate such a tool (popup, page integrated, bot, etc.), your experience with bots could be helpful. Thank you Wandalstouring 21:51, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

On Wikipedia talk:Skill badges, you said you supported the proposal overall, but disliked many of the badges. Which ones would you like to see removed or changed, and why? I would prefer your response on the proposal's talk page. NeonMerlin 00:33, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "We must be doing something right..."

[edit]

No, you're definitely not the only one. These rants are actually part of the reason I've gone forward with this WikiProject Council idea; I hope that, once it gets off the ground, the combined weight of the WikiProjects—which include most of Wikipedia's content editors—can actually be used to formulate policy. Whether that will actually work, I don't know; but, when the other proposals being put forward are basically the institution of policy by bureacratic fiat, I suppose I need to try and do something. Russian task force

[edit]

Since the discussion on having some form of Russian or Soviet military history task force seems to be moving forward, I thought I'd bring up a potentially sensitive point. The area is graced with a particular individual who, while highly active in article work, is rather unsociable and appears to have a long-standing dislike of the project and its activities. I'm wondering if you have any good ideas for either converting him to an ally or at least limiting the damage—both procedural and social—he could do to this new task force if it is created? Re: Autotagging

[edit]

It's a good idea, but I think a slightly more general approach might be better. In other words, rather than creating a page to deal only with the question of automatic tagging, create a general page dealing with automation requests, which will list all of our ongoing and proposed bot- and AWB-driven work (of which tagging would be a major part, obviously, but which could also include things like infobox conversions and so forth). This would be a bit more suitable for a long-term setup; even once the major tagging is done, I'm sure people will keep coming up with new uses for any bots available to us. What do you think? Grafikbot tagging question

[edit]

Any particular reason we're not having it stick a "Stub-Class" assessment on at the same time it does the tags? Or would this be too complicated? Kirill Lokshin 12:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I've tried my hand at shrinking {{stubclass}} down a bit. Unfortunately, there's a lot of text there, so the possibilities are somewhat limited. :-/ Kirill Lokshin 14:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ehh, two passes would be just fine; so long as the articles eventually get processed, I doubt anyone will care about the exact method.
You might also want to speak with kingboyk, as he's been doing the various bot-tagging for the Biography project; he might know a good way to do both things on a single run. Kirill Lokshin 15:24, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discretion blocks by Admins RfC

[edit]

As you were following the article's edit dispute, I invite you to comment on the Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Discretion blocks by admins I have just started. Please take a look and consider writing an outside view there and/or co-signing others' statement. TIA, --Irpen 22:33, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

doubts by a possible provider of images

[edit]

I find wikipedia to be a valuable resource and an exciting project. I would be honored if any of my photos or text can help to promote research and further understanding of armour and history. I only have two main concerns about the distribution of the content of my website. A few years back there was a company that was using product photos from other artists and, by way of insinuation, representing them as pictures of their own work. As the company was outside the US there was little recourse for the armourers whose work was misused. Of course companies that lack the integrity to honestly represent their own product will also disregard the guidelines of a copyright agreement anyway.

My second concern is that some search engines penalize sites with duplicate content. I have no problem with content that I have authored for the website being republished for educational purposes other than the duplicate content penalty. I have not been able to glean what amount of variation negates the duplicate content penalty so I would prefer that if someone were to wish to republish any of my essays in total that they link to the content on my site instead. I am pleased if one should wish to use excerpts or to modify the content and attribute as appropriate. I would assume that any thing used on wikipedia would be substantially different so that it may cause any type of penalty.

I thank you for your message. You have inspired me to put more thought into the subject. I have done a cursory search of the agreements at creative commons and have found several licenses that are close to what I feel is fair for the content of my website. If you know of one that would cover my concerns about duplicate content, or if you feel that I shouldn't be concerned about it, please let me know

You are a bit more aware of technical problems. Do you know of some way to make him feel safer about providing images? Yes, I already wrote him a letter and showed him results of search engines etc., but I doubt it convinces a hardcore sceptic, while he is sitting on an extremely valuable archive. Long-Overdue RfA Thanks from Alphachimp

[edit]
Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which was successful with a an overwhelmingly flattering and deeply humbling total of 138/2/2 (putting me #10 on the RfA WP:100). I guess infinite monkey theorem has been officially proven. Chimps really can get somewhere on Wikipedia.

With new buttons come great responsibility, and I'll try my best to live up to your expectations. If you need assistance with something, don't hesitate to swing by my talk page or email me (trust me, I do respond :)). The same goes for any complaints or comments in regard to my administrative actions. Remember, I'm here for you.

(Thanks go to Blnguyen for the incredible photo to the right.) alphaChimp laudare 05:50, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
