Category names for {{Turkey-geo-stub}} split

[edit]

Well I'm too ashamed to go back to Stub Sorting Proposals and admit it, but I realized I've got no idea what to name the categories for the seven stub types I'd be splitting this category into. Do I have to go back to it and propose the categories as well, or could you offer some hints? Aelfthrytha 15:08, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You may consider taking a look at Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion for this as you participated in a discussion discussing a very similar template and category --Cat out 19:38, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kosovo stub

[edit]

Can you give me answer about my question here:

Thank you. PANONIAN (talk) 22:06, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All right, but listen to this: The fact that Kosovo-stub does not exist only caused more problems. Albanian users rejected that both Serbia-stub and Serbia-Montenegro-stub should be in the Kosovo-related articles. Recently, they placed there Albania-geo-stub instead of Serbia-Montenegro-geo stub or deleted all stubs. So, now we have Kosovo stub articles with no stub template at all, and I do not think that it is a best solution. However, I will not be involved into this issue any more. I just wanted to tell you about problems that were created from this, so you should be aware of these problems when the further debate about Kosovo stubs start. PANONIAN (talk) 13:45, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Having in mind that Wales, Serbia, Montenegro, etc (neither of these independent countries) have their stubs I consider it a violation of Wikipedia rights to not allow Kosovo-stub. If you change this unilateral decision, I would appreciate Wikipedia more. If not, it proves that you are serving double-standards here, which is not good at all. Ilir pz 14:06, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Grutness, I was not aware that discussions about this issue were going on. Anyway, I do not know how and where to start new discussion about this, perhaps you can start it instead (that is why I talk with you on your talk page). :) PANONIAN (talk) 14:24, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you were the one that wanted it back, not me. In any case, I told you where to start the discussions... sigh. ok. It will need talking about soon anyway, given that there's a reasonable chance Montenegro will soon vote for independence. It's probably best to see what the story with that is before doing anything with the kosovo stubs though. Certainly as things stand there aren't nearly enough of them for a separate stub category anyway. Grutness...wha? 00:05, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, good idea to use "Euro-geo-stub". I think that this is good temporary solution for now. I will not be more involved in this question until political statuses of Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo are solved. Until then we can use "Euro-geo-stub" in disputed articles. Thanks for the idea. :) PANONIAN (talk) 22:02, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would support the creation of a Balkan-geo-stub. Regards, Asterion talk to me 22:13, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut... most countries in the Balkans already have their own geo-stubs because they have enough stubs to survivequite happily. Kosovo is a problem on several counts: 1) disputed territory, 2) long-term status unclear; 3) (most importantly) far too few stubs for a separate category. A Balkan-geo-stub cimply containing the Kosovo geo-stubs would have exactly that same last problem. The current situation (which was widely agreed to) was similar but was only intended to be a short term solution until (a) the number of stubs increased and (b) Kosovo's status was clarified. Its other big advantage was that it followed the current official status of Kosovo (which as laid down in UN documentation, is part of Serbia-Montenegro). In any case, as I said above this is not the place do debate this. Grutness...wha? 05:38, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It makes sense. I agree about the S-M stub but it leads to too many edit wars, instead alerting wikipedians of an article that would need expanding...--Asterion talk to me 18:33, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grutness,

Do you think it is wise to insert this icon into the stub? I was unaware there has been an edit war over flags and so on back in January. I think the stub has been protected ever since. Regards, Asterion talk to me 13:25, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds fine to me. I am also worried about possible edit wars. Many of the users involved on the last one have now calmed down and, generally, assume good faith. But it is still a very controversial issue. I have been thinking about it and the ideal pragmatic solution would be to add the map and then re-protect. However I have serious doubts about whether this would be ethical. If you want, I could post a note on Western Sahara talk pages asking for comments on my suggestion. If there is a clear consensus, we could then go ahead with it. IMHO, this would be the most civil thing to do. Cheers, Asterion talk to me 18:10, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

====>Whoops I see now that this issue was already being discussed. Thanks, Asterion. I personally would not be in favor of the icon, simply because it is inconsistent with the Template:Taiwan-stub. Why the different approach with the Sahara? -Justin (koavf), talk, mail 04:10, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for the difference is straightforward - whereas with many countries a flag is used for a stub icon, there are cases where this is avoided for reasons of potentially perceived political bias. Taiwan's flag is far less controversial than its borders. The opposite is true with Western Sahara. Grutness...wha? 00:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand how it could be construed as controversial, just like putting the flag of the Republic of China on the Taiwan stub template would be. That having been said, I don't see how the Saharan flag is more or less controversial than the ROC's. In point of fact, only one editor took issue with it, someone who pushed a pro-Moroccan agenda on several pages before disappearing months ago. I would hate for this discussion to be hijacked by someone who doesn't even participate here anymore. Furthermore, the text of the stub template was chosen to be consistent with the ROC/Taiwan one, and be mediatory between Moroccan and Sahrawi positions. -Justin (koavf), talk, mail 00:26, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay... I'll reopen this for debate at Template talk:WesternSahara-stub - we'll see where it goes from there

Stub sorting

[edit]

Hello Grutness! :) I am here for your advice. I am not involved in WikiProject:Stub sorting but I think someone should count articles under {{Euro-footy-bio-stub}}, {{Asia-footy-bio-stub}}, {{Africa-footy-bio-stub}} and {{SouthAm-footy-bio-stub}}. I think a few new "country-footy-bio-stubs" could be created. Do you know some people who have a lot of free time and like to count? :) - Darwinek 12:13, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... This sounds like a good proposal. Someone was counting them - User:Alai, I think. Either contact him or just propose it at WP:WSS/P, see what happens. Someone may bite :) Sadly my own Wiki-time is pretty stretched at the moment, otherwise I'd have a look myself. Grutness...wha? 06:41, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NHS stub/stub category

[edit]

Dear Grutness, I have taken your advice and reproposed. As you will see, the situation came about through ignorance (that is, the debate on the stub naming took place without many of those concerned even being aware of it) - and of course through my own ignorance in not initially proposing it in an appropriate way. Neverthelss I hope it may now be possible to rectify the situation.--Smerus 13:36, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

hi, I've noticed that you removed the Europe-stub template from Bács-Kiskun and you said that it's not needed since Hungary is in Europe. So my question is why is there a European geography stub template when the continent is divided up in different countries? What is there in the geography of Europe that doesn't have anything to do with seperate countries? I'm not mad or anything, I just don't really get this. Thanks,

(Eddie 12:38, 11 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Replied Grutness...wha?
Makes sense, thank you
(Eddie 02:28, 12 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]

The redirect got recreated shortly after the last time it was redeleted. I've editted the stubs that used it to use the nonspace filled version, but since I'm not an admin, I can't redelete it as a speedy. However, if you still feel like nominating me for adminstration, I'll reluctantly accept the nomination, since I've noticed that some of the stub templates and categories have gotten themselves protected since the last time I was doing some heavy stub sorting, and one of the things I'd like to do is clean those up code-wise and text-wise so as to be consistent and concise. I probably won't do anything beyond stub-sorting with the power. Caerwine Caerwhine 18:50, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My reluctance has to do with that I'd rather not get dragged into non-stub sorting related administrative tasks. Caerwine Caerwhine 04:05, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh geos

[edit]

Hi Grutness.

I'm slightly puzzled by your edit to Owain. As far as I can see, he just did the actual sorting. You did notice that the actual templates were created by a different editor? (Sloman to be more exact.) No disrespect meant, I'm just a bit puzzled. Regards. Valentinian (talk) 07:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grutness, Yes, sorry about the Wales stubs, I saw them appear for one of the counties for Wales and thought it was part of a bigger stub sorting project. I will lend a hand in reverting back some of the smaller counties. (Sloman 11:36, 17 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Multi-stub

[edit]

Hi where. I would like to talk some mater in private whit You: it still wouldn't be particularly useful unless you could guarantee that every editor using it knew the correct names of all stub categories and could spell correctly - now tell me, honestly: where are any problems whit incorrect names in categories (in normal articles)? No one is using incorrect names for articles now days? Especialy new Wikipedians, don't makes mistakes in that maters? Egon 14:11, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes, they do. But if you add a category and save, you notice that what you've added is a redlink. If you add a template and save, you look to see whether the template has saved properly, and are far less likely to notice a red-linked category. And if a person does notice a redlinked category, they're as likely to create the new category as they are to look for the correct name for an existing one. We already have a similar problem with redlinked templates, with people simply making a template if they make a redlink, but it's very easy if we find these to quickly redirect a template to its correct name - for technical reasons, redirecting categories doesn't work nearly as well. Grutness...wha? 01:06, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. if you add a category and save, you notice that what you've added is a redlink. If you add a template and save, you look to see whether the template has saved properly, and are far less likely to notice a red-linked category. -Well I don't thing so. Sopose where is Multi-stub in use, and You make something like: {{Multi-stub|||agh|history}}. If categories would be make dynamicly, then stub would paste something like this:

This article is a stub related to history and agh. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.

and the word agh would be redlinked. Now, how you sadad: you look to see whether the template has saved properly ,so where is hight posibility that you will read this sentence and notice an red link (not the mention a red link in list of categories). So, I thing that for people it will be no difrence betwen naming norrect categories in stub, as naming correct categories in normal articles. Whose who know correct names, will use correct names. Whose who don't know correct, will make mistaces, and existance of Mulsti-stub will have nothing to do it. So how I see it: the problem of incorrect names exist, but it has nothing to idea of Multi-stub. Am I missing something? Egon 10:09, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, currently, a red-link in the template leads to quite a few editors making new templates. This happens a lot, and is a big problem at WP:SFD, but at least it is possible to redirect the new templates simply and quickly. With the multi-stub system, a red-link would require a new category being made to fix it. If the same editors that currently make new templates without thinking started making new categories without thinking, then we'd have a considerable amount of much harder mistakes to fix. Also, there are many sorts of stub-related problems that we can only fix by using the "what links here" page for a particular template. With a multi-stub template, this page would be useless, since it would link to thousands of unrelated stubs. Grutness...wha? 04:47, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Grutness,

I was wondering if you could help me with something - I'm trying to locate where centralized discussion took place that resulted in consensus to remove "-related" from stub category names. I've searched the archives of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting, Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals with no success. I noticed your "-related" nominations in Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion/Log/Deleted/October 2005, so I thought you might know where these discussions took place at. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kurieeto 14:46, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely looks like it. Not only is there virtually no content, but it looks from its history as if you weren't the first to deal with it. This looks like an article fork, so I've redirected it. As RHaworth said on an earlier edit summary "Discuss before creating a fork". There is discussion at Talk:History of London, but clearly hasn't yet reached any type of resolution that this article is a good move - until that time it should have been in a sandbox rather than in article space. In any case, there's no call for an article which is nothing but a list of headings. Grutness...wha? 12:38, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bermuda

[edit]

Nice work on the Bermuda articles, I can't vouch for their accuracy but I have discovered lots of evidence that Bermuda has been seriously neglected. For non-geographic stubs, what is the parent category? There are only a few Bermuda articles full stop, but I came across a politician with a "Caribbean politician" stub, which clearly isn't right, and several sports bios that completely lacked a nationality/region stub type. I am working away on a draft Wikipedia Directory and that is the kind of detail that would be worth knowing! TheGrappler 21:53, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliments - Bermuda's articles were seriously neglected and - other than the geography ones - possibly still are. I haven't been to the islands for many years, so I'm hopelessly out of touch as far as events and people are concerned, but geography doesn't change rapidly and is one of my specialist areas, so I filled in what I could (even though quite a bit of it was using 20 year old guide books as references! FWIW my godparents lived in Warwick Parish, which is how I know much about the place). As far as the stub types are concerned, Bermuda's in a difficult situation. Stub types are only created once it's established there's a big need for them (usually 50-60 existing stubs), so smaller countries often get lumped in with others in the same region. Since Bermuda's out on its own, it tends to get included with the Caribbean, even though technically it doesn't belong there. I suspect that a stub for all the British Atlantic territories (Bermuda, Falklands, St Helena etc) would be a good compromise situation, since between them they could well get to 60 stubs - I'll propose one at WP:WSS/P. As far as stubs in general for your directory go, the full stub list at WP:WSS/ST would be a good place to look. Grutness...wha? 06:11, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I've been making good use of that stubs list. According to my all-knowing (hehe, well not quite!) directory, we once had a Wikipedian from Bermuda, but he quit the project some time ago, and his main editing field wasn't his local area. Overall I've been surprised by how many relatively basic articles the Caribbean and Atlantic island states are lacking! TheGrappler 16:45, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for your message, James, it was much appreciated. I enjoy your Wiki-company too, and I'm sure we'll run across each other in the future. I sometimes wonder if I spend too much of my life on Wikipedia. But, hey, it keeps me off the streets. I also enjoy robust debates with others, and hope to have many more. I have a slight tendency to take things a little too seriously, and this is good therapy for maintaining a minimum level of good humour and fun. That said, I can take the piss out of myself as well as anyone (a well known Aussie - and Kiwi - characteristic), and I hope my occasional attempts at dry, understated humour are received in that manner. Adding the "lol"s and smileys is always a safe way to go, but sometimes I like to let my words speak for themselves and the wink in my eye to be unstated but come through nevertheless. It doesn't always work (because I'm not that skilled a writer), and then somebody gets their knickers in a knot and I have to go into damage control mode. But a life lived without risks is not worth living, so ... anyway, enough of my musings. Cheers pal. JackofOz 03:20, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to be difficult, but I think that you've marked out a mutually incompatible position on Wikipedia:Mackensen's Proposal/Straw Poll. How about a "funniest blocked usernames" section of BJAODN?

[edit]

I've taken a look at the "Deleted Articles with Freaky Titles" section of BJAODN and found it pretty funny. Then I started thinking that a "funniest/weirdest blocked username" section would be good for a laugh too. What do you think about starting one?--Conrad Devonshire Talk 19:17, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Grutness aka James Dignan,

I am the person who has been adding things to articles such as Dunedin history. Thank you for your polite remarks. I have difficulty using this technology and have little confidence you will receive this. I am also anxious to avoid needless correspondence and for that reason am usually cautious about providing any contact address.Sorry to sound anti-social but numerous people try to contact me to ask me questions and I don't have the time to deal with it all.

Yours,

Peter Entwisle

Message noted. Thanks again. Peter Entwisle
OK. How long does it take wikipedia to put up an article submitted? I submitted one the day before yesterday but it hasn't appeared. Peter Entwisle.

Motor Manufacturers CFD

[edit]

This one is going round and round in circles. Just like the earlier CFD closing admins have ignored the conclusion in the latest CFD, removing it from the action list here and here, all this after the decision had been to DRV. I really dont know what to do about this now, wondered if you suggest what action might be appropriate next. Many thanks. Ian3055 14:26, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Elfin Cars are not motor manufacturers, they are motor vehicle manufacturers. Paul foord 21:41, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've finished moving these, if you could just delete Category:Automobile manufacturers of Australia, Category:Automobile manufacturers of the United Kingdom and Category:Defunct automobile manufacturers of the United Kingdom, then we'll be there. Ian3055 01:16, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I picked up motor manufacturers from the first CFD, and then became increasingly astounded by the process which was going on, even after consensus was found entries were simply removed from the action list, saying that they were 'not right', which makes a mockery of the whole process. I'm wouldnt be opposed to adding 'vehicle' to the categories, as its currently effectively abbreviated. Thanks again. Ian3055 09:16, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sci-Fi to SF

[edit]

Why did you rename it... again? Matthew Fenton (TALK - CONTRIBS) 07:59, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well Jiminy Krikit has renamed it with an acceptable compromise, i still do not see how it is an insult however, either way wikipeadia isnt a place where whatever insults you must change. Matthew Fenton (TALK - CONTRIBS) 08:21, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Probably over here i only ever here it called sci-fi (or teachers: science fiction) [england] Matthew Fenton (TALK - CONTRIBS) 12:14, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of 1, not 50 this time

Auraka - no provenance - usual problems with a Encyclopedia Mythica derived article. What do you think. I'll also mention to Bucketsofg (who has replied on my talk about your suggestion re me, I think I will do as he says for a while and get back to you. Cheers. ha - Had a hunch and tried Google Books and found a reference there - the article is a garbled version of it. Will fix.

Washington, Tyne and Wear

[edit]

Hi there. A few months ago, on the Washington. Tyne and Wear talk page you made the claim that George Washington had no connections with the area. It is well known in the area that it is his ancestoral home. Here's a recent BBC news article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/5097412.stm I'll add a bit more on the article in the coming weeks. Regards hedpeguyuk 20 June 2006 19:50 (UTC)

No worries! I said that it's well-known locally, that may have been an exaggeration, the average man on the street around here may not know it so it's certainly understanable that you were sceptical. I didn't know till a couple of years back, although I'm only 21. hedpeguyuk 21 June 2006 7:15 (UTC)

FOTW images again

[edit]

I should be saying this in the mailing list, but since Hotmail and Gmail suck balls, I will go ahead and state this now: I am in the process of redrawing the FOTW images and nuking them from Wikipedia. This should reduce the amount of images by a good number. I nuked about 10 today, and I will do more later, but I am feeling dizzy and sick. Weller brothers

[edit]

Dear Grutness aka James Dignan,

I contributed a new article about the Weller brothers but it appears in a curious format with a request for me to wikify or modify it. I have looked at the relevant section but can't work out what on earth they want one to do. I might add that for an encyclopaedia the wikipedia's attempts to explain itself are very poor.

Yours,

Peter Entwisle

Excellent. Thanks. Peter Entwisle.

No problem. --Dweller 08:39, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One you might be able to do...

[edit]

Dear James,

OK. I'm finally getting the hang of Wikipedia's talk. I did indeed tinker with the McCollough-effect entry. I hope you like it. 139.80.61.49 08:19, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mi Wiki

[edit]

I revamped the home page of the Maori Wiki [1]. Like? Feel free to comment on the talk page Kahuroa 10:28, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hello how is it true about the headmistress of dr challoners because i dont think thats true

My information on these cities is that they were in the north caucasus, possibly in Daghestan but definitely not in Armenia. If you have sources that say otherwise please let me know. Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 12:37, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Checked Golden and Brook- Kazarki, as it happens, is not in the Caucasus at all but rather in the Volga valley. Sambalut is identified as being in the caucasus, but exact location isn't given. I believe it was probably in Krasnodar oblast or in Daghestan; Armenia would be too far south for a Khazar holding. Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 04:52, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image?

[edit]

Hey, I'm just wondering, but to me this picture looks like the north end of the Rock and Pillars [2]. If it was indeed taken from Ranfurly in the direction stated, then that seems the most likely. Also, the trees about a third of the way up the hill (really just a series of dark horizontal smudges) look like the old Waipiata Sanitorioum (TB). Cheers, --Limegreen 23:29, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm. You're right (that road twists a bit, so I lost track of exactly where I was looking). The photo was taken from about half-way between Kyeburn and Ranfurly, so it will almost certainly be the Rock & Pillars. Grutness...wha?
I think Rough Ridge is between the Maniototo/Paerau and the Ida Valley. Incidentally, I got an OK (it's a bit hazy) shot of the area from the air a few weeks back which I might add. Actually, I've tried getting shots several times (both land and air), but they're always really hazy... --Limegreen 02:16, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion/Log/2006_June_20#Template:FOTWpic: in an attempt to clarify and preserve as a reference for future similar cases, I have written Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems. Maybe you'd like to help improve and/or correct it? Lupo 08:47, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I did another count of FOTW images, and I am at 421 now. That includes stuff I recently found and coat of arms images. As I tried to say in the mailing list, most of the issue flags are from Russia, Puetro Rico, Liberia and British Ensigns. I also counted the images from Gharam's website and I count 96. Once again, it includes the images of coat of arms and other stuff. I will be away for a few days, and will not have time to draw images. However, the easiest thing I can think of is to create a new image in either GIF or PNG, reupload them at the same name and put it under a new license. That will prevent people from moving stuff, which is tedious, but also help enforce the editor's wishes. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 19:58, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
