Speedy deletion of Guy Manning

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Guy Manning requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. —Caesura(t) 11:16, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That article appears to be about yourself. While there is no set policy about autobiographical articles please be aware of this. You would also be well-advised to do the following to avoid the article being deleted quite soon for the reason given by Caesura above:

  1. Place {{hangon}} on the article, just below the {{db-bio}} tag
  2. Edit Talk:Guy Manning to explain why the subject is notable, according to the criteria at WP:BAND.

Doing this is not binding, but it gives those deleting articles pause!

Speedy deletion

[edit]

Hi Guy, got your note. There are actually a few reasons why your article keeps getting deleted. First, Wikipedia has strict notability criteria for all articles. If an article fails to meet them, it is speedily deleted. You may actually be notable enough for an article, it's just that I didn't think the article asserted that clearly enough when I deleted it. If you explained the notability better, the article would likely not be speedily deleted (though it may be deleted through articles for deletion). I didn't look closely at The Tangent, but I can. Second, all articles must be verifiable, meaning they must cite reliable, third party sources such as newspaper articles, per the attribution policy. If there are no such sources, the subject is not notable enough for an article. Third, you should not write an article about yourself, per the conflict of interest guideline. If you still want to work on the article, I recommend working on it in your userspace (that is, any page beginning with User:GuyManning/... such as User:GuyManning/Sandbox)., that way it won't get deleted before you have it the way you want it. Don't hesitate to leave me a message on my talk page if you have any questions or need anything, I'm always glad to help. Peace, delldot talk 11:45, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict - Guy, that means Delldot was editing this at the same time as me). I was going to say substantially the same thing, here's my take:

See the above about {{hangon}} and if an article is under development it's a good idea to say so on its talkpage. Another possibility: create the article as User:GuyManning/Guy Manning, that is in your own userspace and when it's ready, "move" it to "mainspace" (where articles live) - you can either use the "move" tab at the top of the window or put {{helpme}} on your user page and a more experienced editor should turn up soon to help you. I repeat what I said above about autobiographical (AB) articles though - there tends to be a degree of sensitivity about this on Wikipedia. Note that I am not accusing you or your article of any of the following: these are reasons why there may be sensitivity in general.
Firstly there is a high number of people posting self-promotional articles either along the lines of "Ben Fooglebaum is the greatest kid in the wrld and al bow dwon to him" or "Sarah Blinkton-Smythe BSc is highly experienced in java-based design (followed by a full CV)". Wikipedia is not a large number of things, including a vehicle for self-promotion.
Secondly Wikipedia is built upon these principles. An AB article may be prone to violate (at least) WP:NOR and WP:NPOV. There may also be issues with article "ownership" - articles here are "owned" by no-one (or perhaps everyone!) and the author of an AB article may have issues with anyone else editing it.
As I say, I am not accusing you of any of these things, but that's why AB articles are discouraged. As far as I can see yours violated none of these. Your article does, however, need to assert the notability of its subject, perhaps a little earlier in the article - start it, perhaps, with

Guy Manning is a member of the progressive rock supergroup The Tangent

Hope the above helps Tonywalton Talk 11:56, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More advice

[edit]

This really just repeats what's been said above, but before planning an article about yourself you should carefully read Notability and Notability (music), which explain the (fairly high) standard of notability an article about a musician has to meet if it is to stay in WIkipedia, and also autobiography about why writing an article about yourself is a bad idea. Wikipedia isn't the way you promote yourself to start your career: once you get "notable" enough, someone else will want to write an article about you. You may not like what they write, but that's another problem... JohnCD (talk) 13:41, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SO why is the TANGENT page MORE notable other than someone else wrote it If someone else set up and account and publsihed my propsoed page would it be more notable??

To answer for JohnCD, I'm not really convinced that the Tangent article is that notable. It looks like the claims to notability are pretty marginal, and they don't have references, which, as I said, are of paramount importance. I doubt if it would be kept if it went throught the articles for deletion process.
But really, are you sure you want there to be an article about yourself? I mean, once it's out there, anyone can edit it, and any relevant material that's been published is fair game. So if you go through a messy divorce, or get accused of drunk driving... all that can go in there. And the people who edit the article don't necessarily have to like you. You'll have no right to choose what gets included or excluded, as long as the material meets Wikipedia's standards. And that's not even including vandals, who could write any crazy thing in there (though it would very likely be quickly reverted, still someone could see it before it is) If it were me, I'd be scrambling to prove I'm NOT notable, to get that thing deleted forthwith! Read this person's account. At any rate, I do really recommend that you read WP:AUTO if you haven't already. Don't hesitate to leave me a message on my talk page if you have any questions or need anything, I'm always glad to help. Peace, delldot talk 02:46, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK I will not bother with my own page then..I just thought it might be informataive Never mind Guy

Fair use rationale for Image:Tall-Stories.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Tall-Stories.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 19:10, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These images in question are MY ALBUM covers, the majority of which I created myself (apart from 3 created by artist Ed Unitsky). I want to comply with the rules here but can someone please provide me with an appropriate example using the template so that I can use this on my album cover images? I tried reading the pages but got confused as to what to put in and where Thanks

Speedy deletion of Image:OSS.jpg.jpeg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:OSS.jpg.jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is a redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:OSS.jpg.jpeg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Thanks for uploading Image:Manning-Cascade.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.

AfD nomination of Ed Unitsky

[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Ed Unitsky. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ed Unitsky. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:07, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In general, claims of ownership of images such as this are spurious, and I hadn't seen that you claim to be the person who really would own it; since you make this claim, I'll undelete it. However, anyone could claim to be the actual Guy Manning; if you're the real one, the best way to establish this is to send an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org saying that you're the actual Guy Manning and asking them to tell people that you are. Something such as "I, Guy Manning, am the same person as Wikipedia user GuyManning. Please add an OTRS notice to File:Charlestown-Cover.jpg that is similar to the one at File:Phil 1.jpg." should work; you don't need to use my exact words, but you need (1) to identify yourself clearly and (2) to tell the person reading and archiving the email what to do about it, and that includes tagging the image's description with a notice that you really are the copyright holder. Please use an email address that's posted on your website, so that the person who reads and archives this email can verify that it really is you, rather than just a random person claiming to be you. If you'd like more details about this email system, see WP:OTRS.
One more thing — unless you send these details, we have no way of verifying that you really are the copyright holder. Please send that email as soon as possible; if you don't send it before a week or two has passed, I'll have to nominate it for deletion. When you send the email (but not before!), please add the following code to the image page:

{{OTRS pending}}

Tried to email that address but it bounced...can I get the full correct emaail address for permissions please? Guy Manning

This will allow the person reading and archiving your email to find it more easily, and it will also tell us that you've sent the email. Nyttend (talk) 12:29, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You made two typos: (1) "en" goes before the @ symbol; note that you must add a hyphen before "permissions" and "en". (2) It's "wikiMedia.org", not "wikiPedia.org". Nyttend (talk) 22:30, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your email was just archived; thanks for confirming permission! If anyone ever again claims that you're not the real Guy Manning, tell User:VernoWhitney (the person who archived the note) or me, and we can supply proof that you're the real one. Nyttend (talk) 13:32, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I've modified your userpage by adding a link to the archived email; this way, if anyone challenges your identity, one of the email archivists can look at your userpage, check the link, and confirm that you are who you say you are. While anyone can see the link, access to the email itself requires a secure password; don't think that any personal details are going to be revealed by the presence of this link. Hello. Please note that the WP:External links section is meant for links which are relevant to the article. Adding lots of external links about yourself that don't mention the subject, as you've done at Charlestown (album) and Margaret's Children, is a bad idea, and looks like WP:Linkspam. Please try to find WP:Secondary, WP:Reliable sources about the albums themselves, as at the moment there's no assertion of WP:Notability for them per WP:NALBUMS. The article Akoustik has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable musical release. No independent refs. No evidence of awards. No evidence of charting.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Very odd to make an exception of this 13th album over the other 12? Why this one in particular? I have been adding accurate content to WIKI since I discovered very inaccurate material on the site about me some years ago. I keep it up to date periodically with purely factual content...no superlatives! If you do not want this information on WIKIPEDIA then kindly delete the whole site set (my own Guy Manning plus ALL the MANNING albums) and I will not contribute anymore...it is up to you. Each album has had review links added to keep them relevant and objective. Some of these are now only found on my own website now because the original content has long since disappeared from the source site, but each review published at BURNSIDE cites the source and author. (Guy Manning)

Hello there Guy. I've just closed the deletion discussion for Akoustik as "redirect", and I saw your note in the discussion. We do want want information about you on Wikipedia, and despite the result of the discussion, and all the deletion warnings on this talk page, your contributions really are appreciated. Sorry about all those impersonal warnings and all the rough treatment that you have had. You have to understand, though, that Wikipedia editors can't go against the site's policies and guidelines, and in this case the notability guideline for albums says that we should redirect album articles to the artist article or the discography article if there aren't multiple, independent, reliable sources that have significant coverage of the album. Good examples of this kind of coverage would be reviews in newspapers, or in general-interest music magazines. Have you ever read WP:42? It's a bit in-your-face, but it dose a good job of explaining what we are essentially looking for. If you are aware of any sources like this, then it might be possible to turn Akoustik back into a full article. Let me know if you have any questions about any of this. Best regards — Mr. Stradivarius on tour (have a chat) 04:07, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There will be more reviews coming soon...as I said..it is only just released so we are waiting for reviews too :) How do you want me to proceed come back when there are more reviews? Yes, come back when there are more reviews and leave a note on my talk page. I'll have a look and see if the sources would allow a stand-alone article. If you want to get to the page, when you click on Akoustik there is a link at the top of the page you are redirected to that allows you to go back to the redirect page. Or you can just follow this link. By the way, did you ever read our guidelines on having a conflict of interest? If you read them it might explain a lot of the notices you received above. Hi again Guy. Just to clarify, I started this discussion so that other users have a chance to discuss the new sources that you found. Please do not write or add to an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Wikipedians with articles). If you wish to add to an existing article about yourself, please propose the changes on its talk page. If you expect all of Wikipedia to agree as a group, you obviously haven't spent much time around here yet. ;) Seriously, though, I think you have a point. The templated message that Callanecc left above is meant for people who obviously don't pass our notability guidelines (think of a secondary school student uploading an article about himself that says "John Smith is the most awesome student ever to grace the halls of XX Comprehensive.") You, however, obviously deserve an article, so the template isn't really appropriate. I'm guessing that Callaencc meant to give you one of the templates that linked to our guidelines on having a conflict of interest, but then you've been linked to that guideline before from this talk page. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. I think you can use this image (and all my other album cover images) wherever, as it is freely available in other parts of the internet I think that previously I had a page PER album published, but we decided to do away with that approach and to simply reference the albums up on my own web site (GUYM)
