Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope that I don't seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: It is a promotional username.. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your views, for instance, your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

There are several options available to you:

Thank you. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 17:22, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hell in a Bucket,
Thanks for your quick response. As far as my username is concerned, I feel that it is within the guidelines of the username policy. I understand your thoughts that my username may have promotional leanings, however, this username is not:
  • The name of a company
  • The URL of a company
Both of which are specifically prohibited by Wikipedia's username policy. I am most definitely new to wikipedia, and am simply interested in creating a wikipedia page for the documentation and encyclopedic value of our company. Feel free to let me know if there's any way you can help. I'd appreciate it!
Thanks

Please stop. If you continue to add promotional material to Wikipedia, you will be blocked from editing. Tan | 39 17:33, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tan, we're in the process of re-wording the page. Are there any specific tips you can give as to how I can come at this from a more objective point of view? I feel like it is pretty unbiased, but I'm aware that it still reads "like a brochure."HMG2009 (talk) 17:38, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You should generally wait for someone not connected to the company to write about it, this avoids a conflict of interest and helps maintain neutrality. In general, someone representing a company and writing an article about it is considered spam. - 2 ... says you, says me 17:43, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict, thank you for replying for me) Your username and use of "we" makes it pretty clear that you are affiliated with this company - this creates a conflict of interest. From what I see, this company does not meet Wikipedia's notability standards for companies. This is an encyclopedia, not a directory or advertising venue. An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent, secondary sources. This does not include directory listings, advertisements, or mere mentions of the company's presence. That all being said, you may feel free to create an article in your userspace here. Tan said it better than I can. You might also want to read about what Wikipedia is and what Wikipedia is not. - 2 ... says you, says me 17:51, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You guys are really on your game. Didn't realize there were guidelines as to what makes a company worthy of noting in Wikipedia. I'll be sure to keep all of the above in mind. Thanks for the input.HMG2009 (talk) 17:58, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Because Wikipedia does not allow any form of spam or other promotion of people, products, companies or other groups (even non-commercial or charitable ones). Using Wikipedia for such purposes will result in the blocking of the account involved. Please read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organization and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for our policies about this.

In addition, user accounts are for individuals only, not for companies or groups or other collective editing. Your username should reflect this. Usernames that appear to be promotional (such as those that make reference to a company or product) violate our username policy and are typically blocked to enforce that policy.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Tell us what new username you want to use. Please make sure that your new username does not violate our username policy and check that it has not already been taken (click here to search).
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If instead you believe that you have been blocked by mistake (i.e., you have not in fact been using Wikipedia for promotional purposes), please write {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this message box and replace the text "Your reason here" with the reason why. See also Wikipedia:Appealing a block for more information. Nja247 19:21, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
