Dear Hadal, can I use your zirconia image in the next version of my free physics textbook ( www.motionmountain.net )? The readers would like it - and besides, this is one of the finest such images on the net! Regards,

Compiere spamming

Hi Hadal, and thank you for your hard work fighting spam. I have just noticed that the spammer has done again, he has probably used a proxy (although he made a mistake ? in his URL name). The other problem is he is spamming at least three or four other Wikipedias, (the French, the Thai, the German and the Dutch I think). I have two questions, can you filter his URL, are you are of this ? meta:Anti-spam Features, is it possible to block him there too, or should we contact administrators there. thanks--Khalid hassani 13:35, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Smartelements spam block

Seems time to make (y)our threat at User talk:62.178.173.218 a reality. (Special:Contributions/62.178.173.218) -- Femto 11:01, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Oh, this is a request, not a remark btw. You appear to be the appropriate admin to 'do the job'. It's a recurring commercial spammer with a more than ample amount of warnings, and I don't want to revert the next batch of links if he decides that the wikicoast is clear again. Femto 18:10, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
No need to apologize to me (European) for any time-shift issues or a mere 58 h delay (not that I counted, heh). I wouldn't have expected the next 'testing the water'-link before next week or so anyway. 30 days is just fine, just long enough to make the point if he trie(s/d) to resurface. I'll keep in mind the blacklist, though hope he decides that WP became worthless to him. Femto 11:37, 4 May 2005 (UTC)

Heads up on Natural Selection edit

Hey,

I noticed that you've done some reverts on the Natural Selection page, so I thought I should give you a courtesy note on my edit this evening. I laid out my justification (which I trust is pretty self-explanatory) on the talk page ("Edit" section). I didn't go through the whole history of diffs, so I sincerely hope that you aren't the author of the paragraph I deleted! If so, I'm really sorry, but I think you should give some consideration to my points, and then maybe we can discuss further.

Thanks,

Brad

Eh, sorry.

I was trying.

I would like to report several incidents of vandalism on the page for Sacrament. I fixed the page; they were minor things. It seems, however, that the user 203.36.44.14 has a history of vandalism. Perhaps a warning or a blocking might be in order. That's your call. Thanks. KHM03 02:49, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Bartman

Yeh, that one guy editorialized a bit. He sounded like a bitter Cubs fan. He has a point, just not quite the right one.

Maybe someone could say something like this, although maybe it should be in a different article: Bartman became a scapegoat for the Cubs' failure to advance to the World Series. There is a demonstrable tendency among fans and writers to ascribe supernatural characteristics to teams. Teams that win frequently, such as the New York Yankees or Green Bay Packers, are said to have a "mystique" or "aura" about them. Teams that seem to fall short repeatedly over many years, such as the Chicago Cubs or (until 2004) the Boston Red Sox, are said to be "cursed" or "jinxed". The psychology of this presumed phenomenon seems to take on mythological or even religious overtones, specifically the idea that external forces are involved in a team's success or failure. Some fans and writers cling to this theory. Others observe that winning is largely a product of investment in talent, combined with appropriate leadership. Luck may play a part, but as player development genius Branch Rickey said, "Luck is the residue of design."

Hmmm, maybe that's also too editorial. It's at least more in the realm of fact and not so emotional. Wahkeenah 04:38, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

In case you still care, this section has been removed from the Bartman page as original research. Just an FYI, CodeCarpenter 20:32, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Clinohumite

Hi - there is a recently added gemstone article Clinohumite added by an anon who now seems to have signed up. I thought it might be a copyvio, but don't have the reference books he is using to check. The article is in need of wikifying and maybe some reorganizing. I'm really not familiar with the mineral and know nothing about the rare gemstone part - so I thought I'd ask an expert to take a look. :-) Thanks, Vsmith 02:49, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism..

I just got the following message: Please stop adding nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you want to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Your name and the date and time.

But since when is correcting a mistake, or possibly even a case of vandalism, vandalism itself.

I altered on the page of Hamas: gorilla ooh ooh aah aah into guerrilla war, because that is clearly what the article was talking about.

I read on, noticed what seemed to be a formatting issue where someone wasn't linking properly to Saudi-Arabia and was about to correct that as well, when I noticed your message. Good call on correcting that issue yourself, but still, I do object to your insinuation that I'm adding nonsense to Wikipedia.

aggressive editing of informative relavant links

Dear Hadal,

I understand that you are considered as a big fighter against vandalism on Wikipedia but I'm afraid you are being too aggressive.

I've just posted several links additions to articles on 'US Army', 'SMS' & 'Botany' that link to an extensive list of related acronyms and abbreviations of those topics on an honored award winning and respective resource named AbbreviationZ which I believe will be an helpful information for Wikipedia browsers on those topics.

I don't understand why did you removed them. Please explain.

Sinceraly, Yigal Ben Efraim CEO AbbreviationZ.com

I've replied at User talk:67.84.111.72. -- Hadal 05:12, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

So adding a large number of links is considered link spam regardless of the links nature? Does a list of more than 20,000 army related acronyms is irrelevant to the US Army article? Does a list of hundreds SMS abbreviations is not relevant to SMS? the AbbreviationZ.com reference web site holds a large number of categories each in a separate category, it has being found a great reference resource by USA Today, the New York Times and others but for Wikipedia is considered a link spam just because it fits several different topics?

I'm afraid you didn't give a fair reason of the removal of our links. I suggest that as a dedicated editor of Wikipedia you'll reconsider your decision.

Thanks in advance.

It would have if the Botany article didn't contain links to other tangents such as: 'American society of plant biologists' or 'The Trees Of Great Britain and Ireland'. When you think about that, everything is a tangent of a tangent of a tangent. Frankly, I don't think a list of Botanical related abbreviations is too tangent and besides, the question is whether the Wikipeida users that read the botanical topic can benefit from our link or not and I think the answer is positive.

(much of the above is from anonymous link pusher)

Chin up at Dinosaur, Hadal!

...after all, one crank will soon enough be replaced with another... I have it on my watchlist too, if you run out of revert-credits. Unfossilized dinosaur bones has links that give a glimpse of the material that is being interpreted in this zany fashion, such as CBS News. com "More on the Soft Tissues from the T-Rex from Montana" The best counter in these cases is more detailed and more copious authentic information, incorporating the new findings that are getting such sensationalist treatment by the boobies. --Wetman 05:09, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

I was curious as to why you had vandalised the Port Arthur theories page, as referenced in history: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Port_Arthur_theories&action=history, at least why you had wiped a perfectly legitimate page that fulfilled every one of Wikipedia's rules for a valid, unbiased page with references. I believe that the action of maliciously wiping such a page, and replacing it with a REDIRECT link very easily constitutes vandalism (especially since it is then difficult to restore the page). I trust that you misunderstood who the vandal was. 203.26.206.129 11:01, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia: Todd Brendan Fahey

RedWordSmith,

This page was "tagged" for potential "copyright violation" yesterday by "Fawcett"; however, the page of origination (the original text) IS Wikipedia's.

Many other sites Web-wide have taken Wikipedia's draft and transferred the text to their own. A stamp-of-approval, it seems, for Wikipedia.

This is to let you know that the entry for "Todd Brendan Fahey" was first posted (and then "Wikified" at Wikipedia.org. There has been no copyright infringement.

(The page seems to be under periodic vandal attack, as the "History" page reveals. But that's another story.)

PLEASE RETAIN THE CURRENT DRAFT of the Wikipedia entry for "Todd Brendan Fahey." It is accurate and has already been "approved" and "Wikified" by your Admins.

Thx.

Images: RE-UPLOADING

Sir, I want to be able to RE-UPLOAD images that "I" have previously up-loaded. I can not re-upload, it either acts like it does, but doesn't, and if I try to delete MY old image, I can't, I get "Sysop access required". I should be the Sysop on images that I have created and submitted. So if I fix the image I should be able to re-load it. Sometime I find errors in images that I have previously up-loaded, or I see a way to make them better, improve them. HELP...WikiDon 19:27, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

  • Yes, this is still an issue. Can I get Sysop/admin rights for the files I upload? Mainly I want to be able to do it on-the-fly, one at a time, as I go. Is there a way you can check and look at all the files that I have uploaded easily? I have orphaned several since I started Wiking. I useally just rename the file on my computer (EXAMPLE: Auckland.PNG to Auckland.png or Clare_Island.PNG to Clare-Island.PNG), then it is very painless to edit the file and just replace the underscore to a dash, or lower case to upper case, or visa versa. If there is a way to check, you should find several orphans. I don't have a list of them all. If I create a map, then either find and error, or impove the map, I useally just delete it on my system, so I wouldn't be exactly sure what it is. I could paw through the "My Contributions" page and sift and compare, but that is NOT a chore I relish. Why, at least can't I reload over the top of a file that I already created, that would solve the problem. If the user that created the file is logged-in, and trys to re-upload a file with the same file name, as long as that file has not been modified (images, *.JPG, *.PNG, shouldn't be), then they should be able to do so (of course they are logged in as the same user both times). Relish, speaking of relish, I am hungry, got to go eat. WikiDon 02:29, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Another vandal

I'm sorry to put you on the spot like this, but another user has been vandalising an article, and I thought you could perhaps help. In the article on creation science, Bensaccount has been replacing the intro with "Creation science (or CS) is Creationism pretending to be scientific." and similar POV claims. Though he has recently retracted his request to be banned, other editors would like him to be blocked. Thanks. -- Ec5618 00:20, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

He does seem to have cooled down, in that he has stopped editing. He seems to have confined himself to his own talk page, where he is having a useless, but harmless, 'discussion' with another editor. Still, I'm all for second chances, and do agree that a block at this stage might anrage Bensaccount. So, I'll thank you for your time, and I will keep you informed. Thanks, Ec5618 06:23, Jun 7, 2005 (UTC)

Your Anne Bonny Article

You are absolutely in control of the Anne Bonny article, there is no doubt about it. Within that Biography, you have elected to include fictional information that originated in, well, books of fiction, and are not supported in any serious scholarly works. The final paragraph is perhaps the most puzzling, an assertion that Anne Bonny somehow became Bart Roberts. It is completely within your control to keep this mostly fictional account of the life of Anne Bonny as fact, and you are doing a splendid job at it, for whatever that’s worth to you.

Aside from the plain fact that I've made no substantive edits to this article, please see also my reply at User talk:68.3.42.145. -- Hadal 03:04, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

May I add a new article at the bottom of the current one, without changing or editing the original article? And, if so, is it permissible to make reference to the original article, or would any reference be deemed an editorial comment and thereby be deleted?

Yoda

A quick google does suggest yoda's full name is Yoda D'kana. I noticed you reverted the anon's edit that added this, is this something that has already been discussed and dismissed? I've reverted your reversion, but feel free to re-revert if it's been decided against. --W(t) 06:34, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

Well, I hate to use Google as a gauge of anything, but "Yoda D'kana" returns precisely 137 hits. Most of these also describe Yoda as a "whill", which is already debunked in the article. Furthermore, if "Yoda D'kana" were indeed Canon, I find it hard to believe it would take this long for someone to add it to the article. I'm not about to get into an edit war over the subject, however; if I'm right, the diehard SW fans will no doubt correct it in short order. -- Hadal 06:39, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Though I'm hesitant to use the "it would have been added already" argument for these sorts of things, the rest is a good point. I've removed it again and added a note on the talk page asking if someone could clarify. Thanks, and keep up the good work! --W(t) 06:47, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

Hadal, thanks for reverting the edit from my user page. But that was only me under my IP address on my computer at 209.165.11.33, nothing to worry about but I did have a real vandal for some time. Take care, Dbraceyrules 03:10, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Edit/delete conflict

Hi, you just erased an attack page created by an anonymous user. I was viewing the page at the time you deleted it, and put a speedy deletion tag on it a few seconds after you erased it. That edit recreated the page, so you're going to have to delete it again. Sorry about that. Mr. Billion 03:46, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for moving my comment on Zhuge Liang to the Talk section. I didn't even know that such a section existed or I would have put it there to begin with.

Discussion at Talk:Pakistan

Would you like to join the animated discussion on the Pakistan's talk page? The current issue is whether "Pakistan is famous for its support of Taliban and 9/11 terrorist" is a suitable sentence to start the article's first paragraph. Your contribution would be much appreciated, as the current discussion seems to be more of a dialog between Ragib and SamTr014 (talk • contribs). Thanks !--PrinceA 06:22, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I have an anonymous contributor, 70.19.21.89 & 70.18.205.35 adding information about Cheniere Energy to the LNG article. I think he wants to promote the stock. He has put it in twice, and I have ripped it out twice. I have added notes on my removal, and with the second one opened up the discussion page, Talk:Liquefied natural gas, and put in my feelings. 1) Please review the situation and tell me if I am out of line. 2) How do I lock an article? Thanks! WikiDon 23:14, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Weight of Wallace's Sword

Hadal, regarding your reversion, I must ask, "Do you realize that a sword weighing 60 lbs. would be impossible to lift and swing over extended periods of time?" Wallace's sword did not weigh 60 lbs. Adraeus 04:12, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

vampyroteuthis illustration...

Hey there,

I'm a fellow Torontonian but currently residing in landlocked Milan, where I've been researching marine illustration. I noticed that you uploaded an illustration to Wikipedia on the vampyroteuthis... is it the main illustration, the antique looking one in black with red eye? If so, could you tell me anything about it, where it comes from?

cheers, Geoff, Milan

Fish article

I was working on the Horseface Loach article in which you had added some information on at one point. I was wondering if you had the source for your information? You made the claim that it has never been bred in captivity, which is a pretty broad assertion. I'd just like to check it, but I don't know what your source was. — Ram-Man (comment) (talk) 13:09, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Andaman Islands

Hey Gregory,

i just wanted to check with you why it is wrong to give a link to our website, www.barefootindia.com on the Andaman Islands page. The fact is that you have www.andamanindia.com which is a broken link to another commercial site. The fact is that we are promoting the islands as a eco-tourism destination and we have no content on our site which is unacceptable.

i have also seen on various other articles that there are commercial links. So, i would request you to have a look at our website and allow our link on the Andaman Islands page and Andaman & Nicobar Island page.

i shall check back for your reply.

Thank you.

The dead external links have been removed; thank you for pointing them out. In general, Wikipedians are very sensitive about any external links which might be perceived as advertising. If the purpose of the www.andamanindia.com site was primarily commercial promotion by a specific company, then it probably shouldn't have been linked either.
Please stop re-adding the link to Andaman Islands, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Nicobar Islands. At least three different editors have removed the link from those articles, suggesting that there is general agreement that it is inappropriate for Wikipedia.
(Sorry for posting the reply here, Hadal; the anonymous editor isn't on a static IP and here seemed the most likely place for this message to be seen.) --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 29 June 2005 14:33 (UTC)

Insect taxobox

Figured there was no reason to keep beating on it in the Talk:Lepidoptera page. Here are questions I'm hoping you can help with on the main insect box.

  1. Monura appears to be some subset of Insect, but not a subset of Apterygota
  2. I'm pretty sure all of the other extinct ones aren't in the right place, but it's tough to figure out where that place is supposed to be.
  3. Insect only has 2 sub-classes? Seems unlikely, but could be. (No time to check this very instant.)
  4. Why go 4 levels deeep on the taxobox? (Subclass, infraclass, order, suborder)

These are the questions I had about the taxobox and why I found it confusing.

Wikibofh 7 July 2005 01:03 (UTC)

I'm far from an expert in entomology, but I'll try to answer your questions (I'm answering here in accordance with the notice on your talk page):
  1. Monura is apparently a suborder of Archaeognatha that contains ca. four extinct species (see [2]). However, this isn't exactly agreed upon. To quote this site, "The Monura are a group of vague and doubtful affinities. There is a sense in some of the literature that Monura was erected because something ought to occupy this phylospace -- not because the fossil evidence actually compelled that conclusion." So in other words, it's a catch-all suborder for taxa that don't quite fit elsewhere. To illustrate my point at Talk:Lepidoptera, I'll also point out that some authorities promote Archaeognatha to a subclass and make Monura a proper order. Since you've used Firefly Encyclopedia's scheme, it might be best to move Monura to Archaeognatha and replace it in the Insect taxobox with those orders listed under Apterygota.
  2. By not in the right place, do you mean they shouldn't be listed at all by virtue of being extinct, or that they're under the wrong subclass/order? They appear to be in the right place (in that they're not included within the Neoptera), but you're right that something's missing. They should be divided under the pterygotan infraclass Paleoptera if Neoptera is to be treated as an infraclass too. So they don't need to be (re)moved, just further subdivided (see [3]). Does that make sense?
  3. Under the scheme we're using, yes; only two subclasses. We could promote Archaeognatha to its own subclass, but that would put the rest of the taxonomy at odds.
  4. Why go that deep? As exemplified by #1 above, it's because nobody can agree on what's a suborder and what's an infraclass. Better to pick one scheme and present it within the taxobox along with the orders, which would hopefully mitigate dispute.
Is this reasonable? -- Hadal 7 July 2005 04:08 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the reply. Just like I indicated on my Talk page, I would watch here.  :)
My points #1 and #2 were really that it seems to be hard to figure out where to place the extinct classes. Regrettably the Firefly doesn't really list them at all, so I can't figure out where to stick them in even that method.
I see for #3, now that I have my book in front of me that it's only 2 sub-classes. Odd, but you can't expect nature to chop things up nicely for you.  :)
I do have a second book that simply lists 35 orders in those 2 sub-classes. It appears to be from Willy Hennig (1913-1976). I'll check firefly again tomorrow to see how they break it all out.
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to explain some of the rationale...My engineering brain has a hard time wrapping around some of the apparent lack of logic. I'm still not sure I like the 4 deep on a top level taxobox, but it doesn't really matter.  :)

Thank you for the block on Hogeye

Thank you, sir or madam, you are like an angel from above. We all appreciate something being done and hope you'll keep your eye on him in the future (if he has one ;)) --Tothebarricades July 7, 2005 06:12 (UTC)

In my judgement his behavior has not improved since the end of the block and is highly unlikely to ever improve. Besides edit warring/pov warring on anarchism as usual, he is vandalizing Template:Anarchism sidebar and breaking the three revert rule frequently. --Tothebarricades 19:13, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

Heads up, your user page has been vandalized

Thank you for reverting the article on ligers. I'm glad to see that the pop culture references are back (and that there was no good reason to delete them). Talk pages

I am not intending any disruption, I am simply commenting on each article to which the problem is relevant. Talk pages are for discussion of the content of the articles, and for discussion of things that need done to improve the content of those articles, and that's precisely what I'm posting about. I'm sorry if you don't like the content of my comments. Cortonin | Talk 9 July 2005 07:45 (UTC)

The comments are precisely what they are at face value, a caution to the reader and suggestion for future editors to fix the problem. The only reason it was necessary to post on a number of different articles is because the problem affecting them is more systemic and widespread than a single article. I humbly apologize if it disrupted the aesthetics of your watchlist. Cortonin | Talk 9 July 2005 07:54 (UTC)
I object strongly to your revert of my talk page comments. That was a highly inappropriate use of your administrator capabilities to push your personal views. You're welcome to disagree with me, and you're welcome to say you disagree with me, but when you erase my comments to keep others from reading them, then you sir have crossed a serious ethical line. Cortonin | Talk 9 July 2005 09:38 (UTC)
Yes, you made your reasoning quite clear when you stated to WMC, "After all the work you've done for our climate-related articles, the least I could do is keep the talk pages clear of poisonous piffle." In other words, you strongly support his efforts and edits, and you are using your admin abilities to undo TALK PAGE comments which stand in opposition to his efforts. If you'll note, my comments mentioned no one by name, and did not qualify as a personal attack by any measure. Your revert of my comments was motived by your POV and by the fact that you are a proponent of global warming theories. Wouldn't it be nice if people at Wikipedia could make decisions without bringing their preconceived views to the forefront? Cortonin | Talk 9 July 2005 10:30 (UTC)

For the record, Hadal, yours was of course a very appropriate set of actions. There's nothing wrong with airing concerns, but when done in such a way as to misrepresent the situation in that way it is a problem. Also sending it to 15+ talk pages is worrisome by itself. - Taxman Talk July 9, 2005 14:46 (UTC)

SimonP is unilaterally moving the expansion template to talk pages (consequently losing information about the section that should be expanded where the template is used in a section rather than the whole article). This is despite there being no consensus for the change.

Hogeye/Danneskjold Sockpuppet

In Anarchism Talk, Archive 21, you state that Danneskjold has been blocked as a possible sockpuppet of Hogeye. I don't have much experience with sockpuppets, and am wondering why the SOCKPUPPETER boiler-plate is not on either user's account page. When was Hogeye blocked for one month, and what does such a block entail? Should not a blocked account boiler-plate of some sort be used for blocked account pages? Thanks.

MSTCrow 19:24, July 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hogeye

This user continues to revert to his POV fork using IP 70.178.26.242. [4] The evidence that this user is Hogeye is somewhat overwhelming. Including the selective reverts to versions only he reverts to [5], his signing his name to this IP [6], and both that IP and the others he has used and been blocked on resolving to the same area. Kev 23:48, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your help with Hogeye. It would appear that he has moved to yet another IP, 67.15.54.56. Unfortunately, the evidence for this one isn't as strong as the others. He has reverted to versions that only Hogeye has ever reverted to in the past [7], [8], [9], [10]. But if he is Hogeye he is attempting to act as though he is not,
Calling anarchism "anti-capitalist" is definitely POV. Not including anarcho-capitalism in the lists of schools is POV. Who is this anti-capitalist POV warrior Kev, who singlehandedly insists on reverting/deleting anarcho-capitalist info? Cut that out, please. [11]
I do find it a bit suspicious, however, that a brand new user who doesn't know who I am knew perfectly well to revert straight to Hogeye's version the moment he showed up on the article. And the only edits he has apparently made outside the anarchism article were a series of vandalisms [12], [13], [14], [15].
But even if it isn't Hogeye, he refuses to communicate at all about his reverts on Template:Anarchism sidebar, and has already reverted 6 times in one day. 14:28, 15 July, 15:37, 15 July, 15:46, 15, 21:27, 15, 01:21, 16 July, and just barely in under the wire with the last one 14:24, 16 July. He also just barely got in under the wire with 4 reverts on the anarchism page, starting at on 15 July and ending 14:23 16 July.
Is that enough circumstantial evidence to point to Hogeye, or should I post the specific violations to 3RR, or just chill and hope he goes away? Thanks for your advice/help. Kev 22:01, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your vigilance! -- Hadal [16]
And thank you for your help. Kev 03:18, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

He has returned with 2 reverts back to the same version he always reverts to, [17], [18]. This time he is using an IP he has used before [19]. I think its fairly clear given the edit summary that this is Hogeye, but there is also some evidence concerning the similarity of his edits between other IPs he has used and this one if that is needed. He had now reverted the anarchism page six times from 04:15, 17 to 02:16, 18 July Kev 19:12, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, given these violations I hope the ban will be made permanent if it hasn't already been made such. I don't know what can be done to stop him at this point, though. --Tothebarricades 22:00, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you again for your help Hadal. Regarding Arbcom, there is actually already a request placed by user Albamuth before he started to get really bad. I'm unsure of the procedure at this point, if all this recent evidence will be reviewed once the case is taken up, or if I should post it over there now, or if a new request should be made. Anyway, as you say, there is only so much we can do, but at least we are making it fractionally harder for him. In fact, he recently made an edit other than his standard revert, so there is always hope he will simply stop on his own. Kev 05:12, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
By the way, 67.15.119.25 (talk · contribs) is making many Hogeye-like edits to anarchism and Template:Anarchism sidebar -- I don't know if its the same person, but the rhetoric that IP spouts on talk:anarchism is pretty Hogeye-ish as well. Also, 72.21.32.122 (talk · contribs) I'm pretty sure is Hogeye. --albamuth 17:24, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Bringing Wikipedia to Toronto

I've been working on a bid to bring Wikimania 2006 to Toronto. I have contacted KMDI, an institute at the University of Toronto. They are very interested in partnering with us, and can get us a full range of U of T facilities for free. With this offer I think there is a very good chance of bringing Wikimania 2006 to Toronto. The only thing we currently lack are people willing to help out. I'm willing to do much of the work, but for the time being I am in Ottawa and having some people on the ground in Toronto will be necessary. We also need a number of people willing to assist at the actual event, likely the first weekend of August 2006. If you are interested in helping out sign up at Wikimania 2006/Toronto. Preliminary bids from various cities need to be made by Sept. 30, 2005, at which point a committee will choose which city gets to host the event. The number of people willing to help will certainly be an important consideration. - SimonP 16:21, September 6, 2005 (UTC)

A while back on 7/24/2004 you reverted a users vandalisms and sent a message to that user as well. Well, I would like to say thank you for being patient and kind. I have since become an active participator and am slowly falling in love with Wikipedia! Jaberwocky6669 03:45, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism or naive editing?

Could you please give us your expert opinion on Talk:Neuro-linguistic Programming. IMO, misleading information is being added (vandalism?), but any attempt on my part to revert or clean it up is reverted and shouted down. Could you please assist us in sorting out this issue. It may be a simple content dispute, or naive edits. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. --Comaze 10:55, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

What a bizzare bit of vandalism. — ceejayoz talk 03:26, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you for reverting vandalism on the Emily Ruete article by the "al-Hamad-hater" vandal (thas what I call him/her). The whole story is strange: someone has apparently taken a strong dislike of the Turki al-Hamad article and want it gone from WP. (Basically, Slimvirgin and I wrote that article.) When SlimVirgin protected it, s/he started vandalizing SlimVirgins page and poor Emilys page instead.. the only connection between Turki al-Hamad and Emily Ruete is that I created both articles ...the vandal has obviously read my user page...but has never (yet) vandalized my page. Very strange. Anyway: thank you for your vandal-patrol! Regards,Huldra 01:14, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Method to submit a link

I came to Wikipedia because one of my photos was being used without my permission, although it's since been removed. I have a large collection of images online, and my website might be useful to readers of some subjects, which made me look for a way to submit it as a candidate for an external link.

I only found the "Edit" method, and I submitted links to my photos of Manila and Ilocos Norte, the Philippines to those subject's pages. I then received the message below, and it appears the links were removed:

"Please do not add commercial links — or links to your own private websites — to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. See the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. Thanks. Hadal 03:20, 6 November 2005 (UTC)"

The above message is fine with me, but it was a waste of my time as I only wanted someone to consider if the links were appropriate. It appears they have been removed arbitrarily, or was there something wrong with them? Since my Minneapolis skyline photo was previously being used on the Wikipedia "Minneapolis" page, I would think a link to my Minneapolis photo album would be appropriate to at least consider.

I have one of the best collections of photos online of some locations in Asia, my website has no banners/pop up ads, no registration is required, it allows visitors to post comments and I link to other sites myself. It is commercial only it that people can license the photos if they request it, and it seemed this was not out of line with other sites linked to.

I get link spam on my website, so I know it's a problem, but I also consider appropriate link requests that I get from others. What is the correct approach in this situation?

Chris

Hello?

Long time no see... well, around here a few weeks already is a long time. Are you on a regular holiday, on wiki-vacation, or are you gone? I hope it's not the latter. Beware of falling trees, especially now that they're heavy with snow! (Did that ever get resolved?) Lupo 22:46, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, if a longstanding editor reduces his contributions more an more, it gets noticed eventually. And if it's the only Wikipedia editor who supported both RFAs on yours truly, even I notice it, although I'm generally slow on such things. I understand, my own real life leaves me sometimes with just not enough time for my hobbies, which include Wikipedia. It seeems I still manage to slip in quite a few edits... in fact, I seem to find so many minutes here and there that over all, I'm spending way too much time here. At least enough to make you comment on it. (BTW, I don't feel particularly royal :-)
From the one occasion where I was involved in a lawsuit, I know the feelings you describe only too well. I also tried not to let it dominate my life, tried to play it cool and not think about it too often. It turned out well in the end, but was dragged on for over a year. I think that's the worst part of it: one never knows how long such an affair will take, and the courts aren't exactly fast either. I hope your tree business will turn out well, too.
Anyway, enjoy the holidays, and I wish you a merry christmas! Lupo 15:47, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Artificial crystals photo

Hi, I've recently been in the process of uploading various photos of minerals I took at the Natural History Museum in London, (see User:Aramgutang/Gallery) and while for all the other pictures I took, I made notes on what mineral it was and what the museum caption said, there is one image that I can't find my notes for. The image is in Commons at [20]. The only thing I can remember is that they were artificially grown. I was wondering if you could identify the crystal habit of the crystals and place the image in an appropriate article, as well as change its description accordingly. While it's unfortunate that it's probably impossible to identify what the mineral is from the photo, I think it is still a good illustration of an interesting crystal habit. From looking at your user page and contributions I assumed you're the best person to ask about this. Thanks. --Aramգուտանգ 01:50, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for identifying the crystals. Since the bismuth article already had an excellent photo of similar crystals, I chose to just update the image description and categorise it in Commons, so it's accessible. Also thanks for your compliments on the Verneuil process; researching and writing articles about things I know nothing about, and hence learning a lot of new stuff is what Wikipedia is all about for me. --Aramգուտանգ 10:03, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Pearls & Bezoar stones

Hi - I just moved a section from pearl to bezoar. The new user User talk:Divine Net Galleries had created a bunch of dubious pearl articles: Boar Pearl, Elephant Pearl, etc, complete with image and a longish quote from some Hindu (?) text, and a link to his website (check histories). Seemed a blatant adv. to me so I redired them to bezoar and moved the section he added in pearl to bezoar. I don't know much about pearls or bezoar stones, so thought I'd run this by you for your info and input. Thanks Vsmith 17:03, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism? I don't think so.

Hello. I received a note today asking me not to vandalize Wikipedia. First, let me say that I have the highest respect for the Wikipedia experiment. Second, I have NEVER vandalized this site. For a real vandal talk to the folks from the govt. who are messing with Wikipedia content.

Before sending me messages, I ask you to provide proof of vandalism. I've added a few things here and there on the page. Sometimes the things I've added have been disputed, which is normal on a "mass" site like Wikipedia. However, I've not vanadlized the site.

An explanation and -- if need be -- an apology would be nice and expected.

Thank you,

FJ

Update: I've checked the history on the IP address I am using. I see your point. However, I wasn't the author of those comments. I think that the confusion may be caused because my IP address is not static, given that I have a Verizon account.

From one Hadal to another

Hey, I was just curious as to why you chose the name Hadal. My name is Hadal, and it is derived from the Arabic meaning of "when the branch hangs low from the weight of the ripe fruit". I know what you're thinking, "why would you need a word for that?" but I don't know the answer to that question, however, I would really like to know what made you think of the word Hadal, because I've never met someone named Hadal, or has even heard of the word before, except it was on a shampoo bottle once. Anyways, good to hear from someone besides my parents who know of the word. Also, if your hotmail address is hadal@hotmail.com, i would absolutely love to have it. I don't know how, but maybe we can work something out.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:White-throated Capuchin.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:White-throated Capuchin.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Storkk 15:57, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Pompeii_worm.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Pompeii_worm.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 20:21, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Pompeii_worm_colony.jpg

I have tagged Image:Pompeii_worm_colony.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. Calliopejen1 20:22, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Lemurine_owl_monkey.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Lemurine_owl_monkey.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 00:04, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

To help illustrate the report I would like your permission to use one of your photos: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archivo:Blue_morpho_butterfly.jpg The intent is to use this photo "as-is" as illustration accompanying the main text, acknowledging the source. To clarify, the report being produced is not intended for sale, but to be distributed to museums and educational departments in Catalonia. I would be very grateful if you could respond promptly to this request, so that I can be sure to include the abovementioned item in the final report. File permission problem with File:Snake's head fritillaria.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Snake's head fritillaria.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 03:53, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
