November 2020[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Velella. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Betws-y-Coed have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Hello Velella,

This is my first time using 'talk', so please excuse any errors. The link that I referenced is the official tourism website for 'Destination Conwy' and part of Conwy County Council [1] Is this really advertising?

Hello Velella,

This is my first time using 'talk', so please excuse any errors. The link that I referenced is the official tourism website for 'Destination Conwy' and is administered by Conwy County Council. Is this really advertising? Hal HP (talk) 13:14, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it really is advertising in Wikipedia terms. I checked it out before removing it. I also removed another site that had been added some time ago. The Conwy County council web-site is fine, but any sites offering or advertising tourism opportunities, cottages for rent, hotels, B&Bs etc is advertising and deprecated on Wikipedia. Hope that this helps.  Velella  Velella Talk   13:28, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help. I’ll learn.

Many thanks, Hal Hal HP (talk) 13:32, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again,

I hope that you're well.

I was wondering if you'd be kind enough to help with a page that I've created Elevate your sole. I've taken your notes on board and added further citations. I was wondering if you have any tips for improving the page and contesting the CSD A7.

I hope that you can help.

Many thanks, Hal

I am aware of the article and made some minor edits to bring it into accepted Wikipedia style so that it conforms to the manual of style. To survive a speedy deletion you need to demonstrate that the subject is import or significant. Adjectives such as "first", "largest", "only" are typically associated with significant topics. However , even if an article is deemed significant , it does make it notable. Notability has a specific meaning in Wikipedia which requires that an article is supported by multiple independent and reliable sources talking about the subject(not simply mentions). Reliable in this case means trusted media sources (BBC, ITV, North Wales Post, The Guardian, The Telegraph etc.). Looking at the article I would say that it demonstrates significance and should survive a speedy deletion but that notability was border-line and , certainly at present, probably fails. If that remain the case, the article would still be at risk of deletion through the Article for deletion process. Hope that this helps.  Velella  Velella Talk   13:43, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Velella,

I’ll continue to improve the article.

How do I go about getting the speedy deletion template remove please? I notice that it says I shouldn’t do it (as creator of the page).

Will someone review it?

Many thanks, Hal Hal HP (talk) 16:32, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your only option at present is to make a cogent argument on the article talk page stressing what you believe to be the significance of the article and proving assurances that you will be able to find sources that will establish notability. If you are unlikely to be able to find sources to establish notability, then there is little point contesting the speedy deletion as the article is likely to be deleted in any case in the near future.
For what little it may be worth, editors who have demonstrably tried to hep Wikipedia by improving a range of articles tend to be treated wit more respect than those just promoting a single article (SPA accounts) as there is always a suspicion that the editor who edits only a single article has a vested interest and possible conflict of interest. Even learning simple things such as the indenting conventions on talk pages, is a simple indication of an editor at least starting to try and be an active participant in Wikipedia.  Velella  Velella Talk   17:29, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Two more things; deleting the notability and more refs needed templates here was not a helpful move. It remains the case that the article does not demonstrate notability and more and better sources are indeed required. Removing these templates looks as though you are trying to white-wash the article and experienced editors will draw their own conclusions from that. I omitted to say what will happen to the speedy deletion template. It will remain until an admin comes along and either agrees with the proposal that it should be deleted and will then delete the article without any further warning, or the admin will disagree with the tag and will remove the speedy deletion tag. Thank you for letting me know.

I’m using the editor within the email to respond on the talk pages. I’ll find out if there’s a way to indent using this.

All information taken on board. I’m still new to this, so much to learn.

Have a nice evening.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Elevate your sole requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Hal HP. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.  Velella  Velella Talk   09:36, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your advice Velella. I’ve been editing things that I have knowledge of. They tend to be local areas, facilities and attractions. I hope this helps. Hal HP (talk) 11:16, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
