Battle Angel Alita & Battle Angel Alita: Last Order characters - 1 big list or 2 seperate ones?[edit]

I have been puzzling for some time now as to how to add the Last Order characters in - into the existing list of BAA characters or have them in their own list of Last Order characters, but this second option seems somewhat unnecessary to me. They're somewhat similar to Naruto and Naruto Shippuden in that characters who appeared in the first manga series don't appear in the second one and vice versa, while a few appear in both, but most BAA characters didn't migrate over to Last Order. Now while this has been handled well with Naruto and Shippuden by adding characters to existing articles or lists, BAA and Last Order lack the same degree of article coverage. What both series lacks is a lot of background infrastructure so to speak (e.g. articles on Tiphares or the Scrapyard) that would allow these characters to be merged into them. I started on a draft of one for the ZOTT but haven't touched it in a bit. What are your thoughts? BrokenSphereMsg me 05:49, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BAA and Last Order are different enough to warrant two lists, IMO. We don't have space constraints and it's easy to copy and paste or link characters between the lists. That would make better, more comprehensive lists with less clutter of irrelevant characters. HertzaHaeon 15:34, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK. If need be elements of the lists can always be taken out and merged into other articles as they develop. I did this to the Barjack and motorball characters when I set up articles for those. BTW in case you didn't know, there is a push among certain editors to not have fair use images in "list of" type articles for characters. I've pulled many of the minor ones I u/l in some of the articles like motorball-affiliated charas and the main list of BAA charas, but I've also limited their use on Barjack, for example. So just a heads up that if a list of Last Order characters is set up, it will likely not have character pics on there unless the chara is branched off into their own article. BrokenSphereMsg me 18:10, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Specific character articles would be a good place to put information that spans both BAA and Last Order, btw. HertzaHaeon 18:53, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't apply to that many topics: Scrapyard, Tiphares, Desty Nova, Alita (already covered), unless I missed some. BrokenSphereMsg me 22:47, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've started List of Characters in Battle Angel Alita: Last Order now. It's just structure so far. I thought that every named character could at least get a mention. HertzaHaeon 20:02, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. Deckman 100 is a Tiphares resident? Maybe under other characters, since he would have come from the Scrapyard, but wouldn't really be a "resident" in that sense. For people like Gelda, Erica and Tzyk, they have their entries on Panzer Kunst, so see also can be used for them, and for those with their own articles like Alita and Koyomi, that can be used. The Type-V mutants have their own page too. BrokenSphereMsg me 20:06, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use disputed for Image:Hoshi wo katta hi.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hoshi wo katta hi.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:47, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zenith of Things Tournament - timing[edit]

I'm wondering what your take on this since the manga seems to contradict itself re. how often the ZOTT is held. The supplement at the end of Vol. 4 or so mentions every 10 years, and Mbadi says that Ping tried to hack into Melchizedek around the time of the first tournament, which would be 100 years ago. At the start of the tournament it is also mentioned that this is the 10th Annual ZOTT. However the use of the term annual to describe an event that takes place every 10 years is confusing, this isn't helped in Vol. 5 when Caerula tells Saya that the losers have to wait another year. BrokenSphereMsg me 21:03, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It could maybe be a mistranslation or simple mistake from Yukito Kishiro? For example, "another year" could mean another year as in not this year. It doesn't seem like such a grave error, if it is one. There's enough support to say that ZOTT is decennial for now, IMHO. HertzaHaeon 18:40, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BAA wiki[edit]

3rd party sources for BAA articles[edit]

I started the targets for the merge, so I'm largely guilty of not rounding up enough 3rd party sources to establish notability. I think the more significant characters can stay standalone as they have received coverage (e.g. Alita is mentioned in some books and pubs), but the more minor ones and concepts looking forward may not. In the meantime though, do you mind helping me out in trying to dig up some sources that may help keep as many as possible standalone for now? That Battle Angel wiki I linked to above, which no one seems to be touching, could serve as a migration point. BrokenSphereMsg me 16:20, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any other character besides Alita that warrants their own article? I can't really see why all the other characters shouldn't be merged, and their current articles moved to the BAA Wiki. HertzaHaeon (talk) 17:11, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, TBH you're right. When I started them the notability guidelines for fictional characters were not being scrutinized as thoroughly as they are now. Also BAA is somewhat off the radar, so the more popular and well known series received more attention. Den was even nominated for a DYK. I'll start migrating the info over and will notify when this is done. I was thinking merge in and redirect the existing articles to the lists. When there's enough 3rd party info, they can be split off again. Desty Nova could also get his own article too, properly sourced. However the OVA should remain separate. BrokenSphereMsg me 18:06, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't get me wrong, the information on all the characters is great but misplaced on Wikipedia. It would be a shame if it disappeared though, so at least dump it on the BAA Wiki for someone else. I agree about the OVA, it should be its own article. I don't know how much time I have, but I'll try to help with some merging and restructuring. HertzaHaeon (talk) 19:24, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of the anime/fictional character info on here or that was on here is helpful, but misplaced for encyclopedic purposes. This is why some series split off into doing their own Wikias, in order to have the info they want but not have to deal with notability and other groundrules. The only thing I'm not sure about that BAA Wiki is what happens when the site owner stops paying his bills. It is a start but needs massive work. Then again, I don't think there's enough support here to support a Wikia for this anime since you and I at this point seem to be the only editors, and even then not that regularly. BrokenSphereMsg me 20:06, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One alternative is to move everything to Wikia. That should stay up more reliably than some private Wiki, and perhaps we can get the owner of the BAA Wiki to use that instead as well. HertzaHaeon (talk) 20:41, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think there are some thresholds for setting up a Wikia, but am not sure. I'd have to look into it. Also it seems that the BAA Wiki site owner went inactive, assuming that he is the user Ext there. Aside from the few edits I made there it is now largely moribund. BrokenSphereMsg me 23:56, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are video games with Wikia wikis, so a popular manga shouldn't be too hard to get approved, I hope. HertzaHaeon (talk) 00:32, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of the questions to fill out when submitting the Wiki request:

Community: Who will join you in building your wiki? Do you plan to recruit users? Is there a community for this topic?

More help is obviously needed besides us 2. I don't intend to run this thing all by myself, as I am working on other things Wiki wise as well, specifically Commons. I'm thinking of submitting the URL as gunnm.wikia.com. Haven't submitted the request yet. --BrokenSphereMsg me 19:47, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can at least help with moving some of the Wikipedia information to the Wikia wiki, but yes, we need more people. I don't know how to solve that. I havent seen any good, active Alita sites recently where one could ask. HertzaHaeon (talk) 23:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One obvious way is to link to the Wikia on the main and Last Order articles and mention it on the talk pages, but this only reaches the audience that would actually be interested in the articles. There is definitely a fan base out there though, but not a very active one here, as you noticed. The forum for Rippersanime, where you can the latest LO scans, is the only site ATM that I know of where there is definite evidence of an online fan base. BrokenSphereMsg me 05:26, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right, there's always that. I guess it's worth a try. If we can't find anyone there, we could keep copies of the articles until we can drum up som support (maybe the new LO paperback comes out) and then do something about it. HertzaHaeon (talk) 12:34, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I found out on the Naruto article that they're not linking to the wikia (Narutopedia) since it violates external linking guidelines. --BrokenSphereMsg me 17:04, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just received notice that we are good to go with the Battle Angel Wikia! So if you don't mind registering there, let's get this thing started and get the word out! --BrokenSphereMsg me 01:53, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BAA Wikia[edit]

Thought I'd give you an update, as well as what I've found so far in working with the Wikia.

I think we should focus on migrating the merge targets first so those can then be merged here.

The list of motorball affiliated characters, except for Alita's entry, which could go into her article there (not migrated yet), has been migrated. Each character on the list now has their own article, and I also uploaded pics that had I had uploaded here before, but later had deleted due to fair use issues. The new articles were not straight copy and paste jobs, since as the info now exists on its own, it's necessary to write it in a way that is only encyclopedic, but also so that it can stand on its own.

The Wikia largely follows Wikipedia in terms of editing and markup. However there are things such as the infobox templates that are missing and would have to be recreated in some form. Right now I think we should focus on info migration and setting up the structure, such as categories. More intricate things like a swanky front page, character infoboxes can come later. It would also help to have more experienced Wikia editors helping out. I also noticed that Wikia seems slower than Wikipedia.
