PNG images[edit]

Hi. I undid your changes to holomorphic function since converting html to LaTeX produces PNG images, which are undesirable. Per the math style manual, html is allowed (and sometimes preferred) in math formulas, and as such, converting them to LaTeX is not necessary.

On converting things[edit]

Hi. I wrote to you earlier about not converting things to PNG, and I see that now you are going through articles converting things to HTML from LaTeX. Well, per the math style manual, that's not a good idea either. People can can contribute in any way they want, and mass conversions one way or another are not good. I'd suggest you don't do that.

I understand your motivation, you may want consistency, but the problem is math on the web just does not work, either way. So it is better to leave things the way they are and spend one's energy on actually adding content than converting things. Thanks. You can reply here. Me again[edit]

Hi. Sorry to bug you, I've been doing that a lot, as you can see above. However, I don't think your edits are useful. You usually pick a page, make a large number of minor edits to it (without an edit summary), and those edits are just about latex to html conversions, etc, changing unicode to html, etc, like here and here.

If you really want to do that I suggest you

Edit the whole page at a time, not section by section, so make one single edit
Use a edit summary, saying what you changed, and why you changed.

But really, those rearrangements don't add much in my view. If you really want to make a difference, you can do so very productively at Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Mathematics, for example.

Notation for groups[edit]

The standard notation for (say) the general linear group over a field K is GL_n(K), the point being that GL_n is a functor from fields to groups. Please stop changing this to the old fashioned notation GL(n,K), which is no longer used much. The same applies to orthogonal groups, symplectic groups, and so on. If you think all subscripts and superscripts should be eliminated from wikipedia, it might be a good idea to discuss this on talk pages such as Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics and get the agreement of other editors before carrying this out. The same applies to all the other notational changes you are making. In general it is not a good idea to change everything from one convention to another unless there is a very good reason for it and support from the other wikipedia editors.
