List of longest-reigning monarchs[edit]

Hello there, the change you made on List of longest-reigning monarchs was overriding a decision made by the community on how this page should be presented. Decisions on Wikipedia are made by consensus, if you wish to make this change, you'll need to establish a new consensus. El Dubs (talk) 21:07, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm new to editing Wikipedia. Nice to meet you. I had to make this change because the previous presentation of the page was incorrect, consensus or otherwise. Unfortunately, the article now informs readers that Elizabeth II has been the Queen of Tuvalu (to give one example) since 1952. That's incorrect by 26 years, and also implies that Tuvalu (and other countries) are still British colonies. The community should reconsider this. Hobbitron38 (talk) 21:16, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, that she was queen for 70 years in only four countries & that Jamaica should be listed at 14th place, as it used to be. But, the majority of editor there, wanted to list all her realms, together. My advice, wasn't heeded. GoodDay (talk) 21:51, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, welcome to Wikipedia! It's just listing the countries that have been sovereign within Elizabeth's 70 year reign, not suggesting they have been sovereign for that full 70 years. The list is a list of monarchs, not countries. However I'd agree that because you interpret it that way, others will too, therefore there's room for improvement. We can figure that out by discussing things, and coming to an agreement, which I see you've now joined. El Dubs (talk) 01:51, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I'm a few days late in replying. Thank you for welcoming me. I don't think I'll be a regular editor on any articles besides this one. I hope some kind of solution can be reached. At this moment, I see that someone has changed the article back to listing all of the current Commonwealth realms.
I want to address one point. You say "It's just listing the countries that have been sovereign within Elizabeth's 70 year reign, not suggesting they have been sovereign for that full 70 years." Firstly, as you acknowledge, it is suggesting that to some readers (like myself). Secondly, this claim is only partially true. The article is listing the countries that are presently sovereign and where Elizabeth is Queen today. If it was really "listing the countries that have been sovereign," then the list would have to include Pakistan, South Africa, Barbados, and some other republics. In any case, when you say that the list includes countries that have been (or are) sovereign during her reign, the question occurs to me, "why?" The reign and the country are inextricably linked, and she's only reigned for 70 years in four countries. That should be the paramount fact. To include other countries just strikes me as gratuitous.
