Leonard(')s Corner

Since you have edited the article about Clanbrassil Street and contributed a picture of Leonard(')s Corner, I wonder are you certain that there is an apostrophe in the name of the corner? I recently contributed a picture of the corner for the Dublin street corners article, but although the pub in the picture has an apostrophe in its name, the spelling of the Leonards Corner post office across the road from it contains no apostrophe, so now I am gripped by doubt about the spelling of the file I uploaded. What do you think? — O'Dea (talk) 04:22, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

There has to be an apostrophe in there, either before or after the "s". The name originally comes from a 19th-century property owner named Leonard, who owned several buildings on the corner. He sold them around 1890 - I have a picture of the advertisement from the Irish Times. So "Leonard's Corner" would be correct. Nearby you've got Kelly's Corner, named after the owner of the tobacconist on the corner, where two journalists were shot dead in 1916 by the same madman who shot Sheehy-Skeffington (see article on Portobello, Dublin). Hohenloh + 18:13, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
I agree the apostrophe makes more sense as a general rule, but sometimes no apostrophe can be correct, a bit like the absent question mark that one might think should be in What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. — O'Dea (talk) 05:47, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Kelly's-corner jpg

Hohenloh,

I would greatly appreciate if you know and can confirm who the boy is that is pictured in the photo 'Kelly's Corner'; and, how the picture came into your posession?

Thank you in advance, gcasstl — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gcasstl (talkcontribs) 19:02, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Where does this photo appear? Hohenloh + 16:00, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, I see the one you mean. As far as I recall, this photo was among a bunch of photos I inherited after the death of my mother a few years ago - she collected family photos and old photos of the area, which I scanned and then distributed to family members. I have no idea who is in the photo - do you know? Hohenloh + 16:27, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your quick response. I believe it is my father. He was born and raised on Portobello Harbour and lived on Bloomfield Avenue after that. Having similar pictures of him in the neighborhood of Portobello, I was hoping the photo was annotated and my intuition could be confirmed. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gcasstl (talkcontribs) 21:52, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. You were somewhat hasty in reverting my careful edits to this article, and threw the baby out with the bathwater. None of the sources was introduced by my edits, which merely tidied, reordered and rectified quotes which did not match the cited sources. I therefore ask you to do a proper editing job instead of mindlessly reverting edits which took me a long time to decide on. In fact, you have reinstated the errors and redundant duplication of links which caused me to work on the article in the first place. Also, your peremptory rejection of the article's major third-party source as "racist" and "antisemitic" does not meet the WP:NPOV requirement. Please argue your case on the article's Talk page before taking such action again. The requirement is that you provide opposing/balancing arguments and sources rather than simply reject the validity of a third-party source. If you do not wish to exercise such care and consideration, I would suggest that you refrain from editing the article any further. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 01:49, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

I have replied on the Talk page of the article in question. Hohenloh + 03:35, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Chicken and chips

Hi - in what way do you consider [1] not relevant? They are both similar dishes, and the connection to me seems obvious. Fish and chips is similarly linked from chicken and chips, neither are linked within the article, therefore a see also seems the simplest way of linking them.  An optimist on the run! 06:44, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't see how the complexity of Fish and chips can be compared to the simplicity of Chicken and chips. Hohenloh + 01:41, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry? In what way is fish and chips any more complex than chicken and chips? They're both fried dishes, served as cheap take-aways, and often from the same establishments. (NB, if you're referring to the complexity of the articles rather than the subjects, this is completely irrelevant.) From [[WP:SEEALSO}}: The links in the "See also" section do not have to be directly related to the topic of the article, because one purpose of the "See also" links is to enable readers to explore topics that are only peripherally relevant. I've restored the link.  An optimist on the run! 07:40, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Dublin Forum

I have removed the proposed deletion tag you placed on Dublin Forum, as it was discussed at AfD in 2005 and per policy is permanently ineligible for proposed deletion. I only did this to comply with policy and have no comment on the merits of your deletion nomination. If you wish to pursue deletion, feel free to open another AfD. —KuyaBriBriTalk 13:45, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

But will the same thing not happen again? Hohenloh + 15:39, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
It may, it may not. The last AfD was over 6 years ago; people's opinions may change. I've seen articles deleted at second or third AfD nominations before. Prod is not a way to circumvent consensus; it is only for cases where deletion is uncontroversial and where a full discussion would likely be a waste of system resources and everyone's time. The fact that someone opined to keep the article in an AfD means that this particular article's deletion is not uncontroversial, which is why the "no prod after AfD" rule is in place. —KuyaBriBriTalk 16:36, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Many thanks for the information - I'll follow it up. Hohenloh + 16:39, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Stories Project

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'd very much like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project.

Curious.

[2] Apologies, I didn't realise that section was about specific distillery's - however, if you see me making a mistake like that, feel free to just move it, Ireland is definantly famous enough for its peat-distilled Whiskey ;) or so I thought, the Cooley Distillery make peated Whiskey's - I have the bottle as proof hehe. Also, you removed my reference to Cider, I re-added if you don't mind, Magners is pretty well known world-over. --OfTheGreen (talk) 00:02, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi H. I noticed you uploaded the image of the 'memorial cross' at this article. I have often intended stopping at the site to actually read the inscription, but parking difficulties at the junction have precluded. Could you by any chance transcribe it to the the article to explain what it actually commemorates? Best. RashersTierney (talk) 10:15, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Sure Rashers, will do. Hohenloh + 11:43, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Montgomery Hyde

In what respect could he be regarded as an Irish politician? --Counter-revolutionary (talk) 11:43, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

He was born in Ireland (according to the Wikipedia Manual of Style (Ireland-related articles), people born before Independence in 1922 have their birthplace referred to as Ireland). Hohenloh + 11:52, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate that point, it makes some sense (notwithstanding the very obvious point that Ireland was not then independent). However, surely that would make him a "politician born in Ireland" or a "British politician born in Ireland". As it is, one would think he was a politician in Ireland, which he was not. --Counter-revolutionary (talk) 16:06, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Then it could be left simply as "Politician"? I'm not really fussy about it one way or the other in this case, but my attention was drawn to the bot automatically describing what I would call obviously Irish politicians as "British". Hohenloh + 12:49, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Abbey Theatre: de Valera as playwright

Pleased to see your intervention. I mentioned on the talk page as long ago as June 2010 that this seemed very dubious, but didn't like to shove my English oar in. Peer review

Hi Hohenloh, I was wondering would you mind giving Irish Volunteers (18th century) a run over and tell me what you think? I've re-written the vast majority of the article and expanded it greatly. I've still more stuff to add and have to find a way to sort out the ever dwindling "Politics" section as to what to do with it - incorporate into another section or rewrite it or what? Any suggestions for improvement would be gratefully accepted too.

Hoping to get the article to at least a B-rating.

Nomination of Irish Family Planning Association for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Irish Family Planning Association is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Irish Family Planning Association until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 08:01, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Linguists from Ireland, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

G6: Move/Housekeeping; category created in mainspace. I have created the category with content from this page, see Category:Linguists from Ireland

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Wikify

At Mark Donne you directed me to WikiProject Wikify, and on the page it states, "Following a TfD nomination, the {{wikify}} tag has been deprecated in favor of more specific maintenance templates." This is why I removed it. I'm not sure what one to replace it with as I don't know what specific wikify-covered problem there is with the article. Cheers Delsion23 (talk) 01:19, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Firstly, thank you for bringing this to my attention - I rarely use the Wikify template and was not aware that it had been deprecated a few months ago. I noted in the discussion on the template that editors have, or had, different opinions on what it meant. I assumed the "Ten simple steps to thoroughly wikify an article" at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikify/Drives/Instructions was how to approach an article tagged with this template. I also assumed, wrongly, as it appears, that you as an experienced editor would spot what needs to be fixed, but I see you take a different approach to the use of the template. I think the handiest thing to do would be for me to effect the changes I think necessary. Please feel free to modify any of my edits as you think fit. Hohenloh + 20:48, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Further to our conversation last month, an updated version of AWB is now available that doesn't add the wikify template, and instead adds underlinked or dead end. It is to be found here (version 8853). Thanks! Delsion23 (talk) 01:39, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Ways to improve Anna Haslam

Hi, I'm Ana Bykova. Hohenloh, thanks for creating Anna Haslam!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Thank you for making a wiki page, it looks great. Please refer to the tags added to find out how you could improve it. Best wishes,

Anastasia Bykova (talk) 00:51, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Paul Vincent Carroll, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.irishlivesremembered.ie/memorial.html?mid=255.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. AWB

I...uh, wow. Sorry - I'd forgotten I'd even written that, it's been so long ago. Yeah, I'd disregard it. I don't think there's anything worth looking at there - in fact, I'll nominate it for deletion right now, to get rid of it once and for all.

I'm not sure there's a good task-oriented guide for AWB, but I can tell you what I use it for. It's great for talkpage creation, for instance; you can load up a talkpage template and create a bunch of pages from a list. I also use it for recategorization and typo fixing. Example: I found a lot of articles categorized as Category:Actors from California and Category:People from Los Angeles, California when we have Category:Actors from Los Angeles, California. I used CatScan to make a list of the articles, saved it to my sandbox, and then recategorized using AWB. It's great for something like that, especially if the number of articles in question is especially large (I do it for recategorizing National Register of Historic Places articles, also). I use it to replace stub tags sometimes, and it's good for fixing typos. Template replacing, too, sometimes.

What I would say, basically, is that AWB is useful for any small, repetitive task that can easily become drudgery. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 15:24, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

I am confused. How was this edit a cleanup? -- PBS (talk) 19:02, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

The site www.chaptersofdublin.com no longer exists, so I removed it from the reference, while still (hopefully) retaining the rest of the information. The "cleanup" attribution was assigned by AWB, which I was using at the time, not by me. Hohenloh + 00:13, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
In such cases isn't {{deadlink}} more appropriate to give time to find an archived version -- or check for one yourself -- (because as can be seen there is an archived version on the wayback machine archive)? --PBS (talk)

Thanks for your work over the years on this article, and specifically for actually documenting that you used the DNB back in 2008. I would like to improve the reference, but I cannot find the source text you incorporated. If you can remember which DNB articles you referenced and let me know, I will be happy to modify the citation to use the newer parameters. Lebor Gabála/Book of Invasions

Nicknack009's comments have convinced me that the article should remain at Lebor Gabála Érenn so I'm going to withdraw the request, just wanted to make sure you aren't desiring the move before I close it formally. From your comment it seemed that you were just 'not objecting' to the move rather than actually desiring it to move. -- Jamie ut 10:49, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. I would support the move, not just because it's in Irish, but it isn't even modern Irish. However, I'm happy to see that Book of Invasions is present as a re-direct. Hohenloh + 16:50, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Fish & Chips

Dear Sir - I see that you take wikipedia seriously, as indeed I do. May I ask why you keep re editing my additions on fish & chips? Every fish & chip shop in Britain and quite a few in Ireland will sell pickles to go with your fish and chips. You can choose from jars of pickled onions, pickled eggs (my particular favourite) & Gherkins. There is nothing controversial in my comments so there is no need to remove them. I have now sourced/referenced the information for pickled eggs and added an external link to an article on fish and chip shops in Britain. This is surely enough. BTW I was in Dublin last month visiting relatives.(dorkinglad(talk)14:05, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Queries about your uploaded images

I notice an old picture you uploaded had been deleted and there's more above about to be deleted if a source reference isn't given. I'm sure they are eligible to be kept so it would be nice if you gave a source. A strange thing I noticed in the history is that you go to some trouble to stop them being moved to Commons. Is there a reason for this? Dmcq (talk) 09:05, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

When I first started to upload images to Wikipedia, I understood that I was complying with the regulations as they then existed. I checked many articles containing images to ensure that I was following the correct procedure. I already had a large stock of photos, many of which I had inherited, others acquired through local history groups, from old newspapers and magazines which I came across in libraries etc., which I had scanned and uploaded to my PC, and others from various sources on the web. There seemed to be no problems with the images I uploaded until bots started moving them to Commons, whereupon several were deleted because they did not meet the more stringent requirements for Commons. Recently more emphasis seems to be placed on the source, which IMHO was not considered very important a few years ago. In the case you mentioned, where source is missing, I need time to check through through my collections to find the source - if they are moved to Commons without the source they will be deleted immediately. The notice placed on image files to be moved to Commons mentions the need to ensure that the image files fulfill the criteria for Commons. I put a lot of time and effort into this work but sadly the apparently stricter criteria for uploading image files will mean that many image files will be deleted. Hohenloh + 01:19, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
The source is important for determining if an image is PD or not. Take File:M ogrady.jpg & File:St-john-church-dublin-1884.jpg which are the ones I'm specifically interested in. Depending on whether it was ever published or not, and if so when, it might not be in PD as yet. The O'Grady image on Flickr but not released so there is still some doubt surrounding it. St John's in here]. Both are currently tagged for deletion but I've reset the clock for a week hoping that you can come up with sources. NtheP (talk) 17:33, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Michael Scanlon (Poet)

Moved post to new section:

Dear Hohenloh: I recently edited the article Michael Scanlon (Poet) to correct the spelling of his last name to Scanlan. I am a relative of his (he was my grandfather's uncle), and he did indeed spell his last name "Scanlan" and not "Scanlon." I could not change the subect heading to reflect this correction. Would you please do this? By the way, the inspiration for my Wikipedia name "Planxty" was that Michael's son Kickham gave that name to one of his daughters. Many thanks, Planxty2 Planxty2 (talk) 01:26, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry but all the sources I have checked so far spell the name Scanlon - one of these is from 1867 and another from 1917 (his obituary). I can add a re-direct from the name Scanlan but I would have to have some verifiable source to show that he did indeed use an alternative spelling. Hohenloh + 13:59, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
Hohenlon: This is Planxty2. I corrected the spelling of the name of Michael Scanlan (Poet) on the Wikipedia page. As I write this, I am looking at a photograph of the plaque dedicated to him that is located in his hometown of Castlemahon. Michael Scanlan is a relative of mine, and he deserves to have his surname spelled correctly. You can "google: him to verify the spelling. Also look at the collection of his poems in the book Love and Land, which is a compilation of his poems.
Once again, I must re-iterate that Wikipedia depends on verifiable sources. The sources cited in the article are consistent in the spelling of his name during his lifetime. The spelling of surnames often change over time, and it may have happened in this case, but the sources show that the name as spelt in the article is correct. Hohenloh + 00:12, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

A Wikimeet is proposed for Northern Ireland in the next few months. If you have never been to one, this is an opportunity to meet other Wikipedians in an informal atmosphere for Wiki and non-Wiki related chat and for beer or food if you like. Most take place on a Sunday afternoon in a suitable pub but other days and locations can also work. Experienced and new contributors are all welcome. This event is definitely not restricted just to discussion of Northern Ireland topics. Although I searched for it with inconclusive results, I was still wondering if Cumbria and Cheshire are related. Some sources on internet say that Moira Buffini was born in that county (Cheshire) as one of the article's category which refers to it. This edit on 16 November 2008 to the Wikipedia article English Cemetery, Naples added the template {{DNB}} but I am not sure which article or articles you were referring. The only article that mentions the English Cemetery in Naples is s:Somerville, Mary (DNB00).
