Your Table

I would just like to say that I think your table of the Watford squad, I feel, is infinitely better than the current one. I posted a message on the Watford discussion board under it, but, as it is your table, I thought I'd put a message here aswell. Seeking an opinion

As an experienced Wikipedian with an interest in football pages, your opinion would be welcomed on a discussion at Talk:Swansea City A.F.C.. After various attempts to add a site with no original content, the site's owner has now recruited someone else to do the same. The question is this: am I correct to delete links to sites which themselves consist of others' copyrighted material and links to other sites? Given the paucity of real content, I have a strong suspicion that the site is operated on a "cash for clicks" basis.

I would like, ultimately, to see the Swansea City A.F.C. Wikipage reach Featured standard, so I am inviting opinions from Wikipedians with sustantial edit histories. Thank you for your time. - Stevecov 14:25, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Hot Fuzz

Hi Mike. My source is boxofficemojo.com, which is by far the most reliable source for release dates on the web. The UK release I got off IMdB, which I normally avoid like the plague as it is pretty much all useless gossip, the date there makes sense in relation to the US date. boxofficemojo is cited in all the recent years in film except 2007, where I must have forgotten to list it (good job you reminded me). Keith Warn

Former Watford goalkeeper, played 3 league games just after Watford got into the league. I think he played a lot more for them non-league and I wondered what you could dig up about him. The only link I can find is this[1]. The interest comes about from the fact that he umpires at our cricket club and I want to surprise him with some facts :) P.S. POV image

I have read that before, but the consensus seems to be that all "most likely" teams be removed, while only one person (Dodge) wants all images of starting line-ups gone, with no explanation as to why. The Brøndby 04-05 starting line-up is based on most appearences that season, and also shows the last Brøndby team to win a trophy. Why is that point-of-view?

The image was originally made to illustrate the team under coach Michael Laudrup, but my current plan is to expand the "Former players" section with info in the style of the Per Bjerregaard article (landmark transfers, money made from player sales, being a development club and so on) and include the image as illustration of more than half the players being sold in a span of two years. Until that section is written, though, I've "parked" the image at its current position. Poulsen 22:22, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Featured Pictures ordering

Hi, Mike. I'm not sure which page you're referring to; lists of featured pictures are all over Wikipedia. I assume you mean this one: Template:Announcements/New_featured_pages. Assuming that's the page you mean, I reordered the entries because the procedures here: Closing procedure, "When promoted..." say "Date, then alphabetical order" in step 3. Logically that means increasing for both (1...31 for date and a...z for alphabetical order), otherwise it might say "Reverse date, then alphabetical order." In truth I have no great preference for any particular order, and only reordered the list there to comply with the procedure. Note that steps 3 - 7 all specify places to add featured pictures to, and that all of them specify a different preferred order for entries. 3 says "Date, then alphabetical order." 4 says "newest on bottom." 7 says "newest on top." 5 and 6 simply warn that images by Wikipedians should be listed in a different section than images by others found by Wikipedians.

Those guidelines have been around for longer than I've been around. If there's a discussion somewhere in which the preferred order was changed, then I guess nobody got around to updating the procedures on the page I referenced. -- Moondigger 11:27, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

League Cup stats in infoboxes

I spent quite a bit of last night updating Watford's infobox stats, as whoever did them left out all FA Cup/League Cup/Johnstone whatever appearances and goals. Someone's reverted one of them saying League Cup appearances don't count. That's not the case, is it? If so, that's utterly ridiculous. HornetMike 13:06, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

My understanding is that only league appearances & goals should be shown in the infobox. The note at the foot of the infobox says "* Professional club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only."

I'm sure that this is mentioned under the guidelines for creating infoboxes but I cannot find it at the moment. I guess this is because it's hard to get reliable stats for cup & other non-league appearances for players from earlier generations or from overseas, and the information in the infobox should be shown on a consistent basis.

Bizarrely, when it was announced that RJ was the permanent manager, it was actually confirmed that he'd in fact already been made permanent some months earlier and it had just never been announced at the time (why it was done like this is anyone's guess but then anything's possible where Mr Scally's involved). "Creating" a Role

Hi! I notice that you have changed references to "creating" a role in a play to "playing" a role in at least a couple of articles. Counter-intuitive as that may seem, it is fairly common usage (and more precise) to refer to the first person to have played a role on stage as having created the role. The theatre publication Playbill has used the phrase with respect to James Corden and Russell Tovey, whose articles you changed, saying that Richard Griffiths, who played Hector "created the role at the National Theatre in England (as did the entire company)." RFA announcements

A note of caution, there's a certain element of RFA regulars who have a strong dislike of any form of announcements outside RFA itself due to perceptions of votestacking. Its not going to be a problem with Qwghlm or Daniel.Bryant as they're both looking like landslides anyway, but on a delicately balanced RFA it sometimes results in people going Oppose - advertising of RFA or somesuch. Relegation

Hi, thanks for your message. Nice to know that us being relegated to near oblivion is not well liked by most footy fans. Can't see us coming back up very quickly, though if we get some decent owners in rather than the various muppets who've mismanaged the club for the past few years then we might stand a chance (biggest mistake we made was getting promoted a couple years ago, completely stuffed us!). Shame about your result on Saturday, good luck for getting back into the Premiership (would say good luck for avoiding relegation, but I really don't see that happening).

No problem. I understand the logic. On a side-note, I'm pretty sure Watford FC can make it back up in a couple of years. Good luck on that. Though, the captivating headline this weekend is going to be regarding the battle at the top. It looks like it will be a race to the finish. Personally, I hope Chelsea snatch the Premiership but then lose to Liverpool in the Champ League semis (and Liverpool go on to lift the trophy again). Hehe... I support LFC, of course. Unilaterally removing material from articles

I notice that you have been unilaterally removing material from club articles. This is a bad practice and where the material is sourced is getting very close to vandalism. It is also against Wikipedia editing practices. Removing the Robbie Williams section from the Port Vale article is a case in point. That section was sourced and the Robbie Williams involvement is hugely significant in the context of the club. What you should do is raise your concerns on the article talk page - we edit by consensus not by unilateral actions by previously uninvolved editors. Hi, I'll reply here seeing as I think what's you said you do on your talk page. Apologies if you, um, weren't! Anyway, just to explain I was taking the oppurtunity when updating league placings to remove sections I felt obviously disregarded policy and decisions made on WP:FOOTBALL. That mainly meant stuff that was fairly obvious - trvia sections, link farms and other miscellany. Celebrity fan sections too - but we'll bring that up on the WikiProject. I didn't think that required consensus in order to remove any of it. The Robbie Williams thing was my mistake - I meant only to delete the song bit, which was fairly trivial, even if it was sourced. I suppose, in retrospect, I would be polite to post a message on talk page if I'm removing sourced material, even if it is (at least in my view) policy violation. Will do that in future. Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Looking for some an old Watford result

Hi Mike - I have a favour to ask. I'm currently trying to get the article on Herbert Chapman up to GA or FA status - in the biography of him I have, it notes his final match for Northampton Town (the club he was player-manager of) occurred in Southern League in 1908-09, but doesn't give the exact date. It occurred sometime over the Christmas/New Year period, and was against Watford, in which Watford won 4-1. Do you have any Watford books or stats websites at hand that could tell me the exact date that match was played? Google has given me nothing useful. Many thanks in advance. Hertfordshire Rangers F.C.

I have created a stub article on Hertfordshire Rangers F.C. who appear to be one of the fore-runners of Watford F.C., but I am a bit confused about their history. Unfortunately the Watford F.C. article says little about the very early history. My searches on the web have come up with several very different versions.

Here it says "Formed around 1865, Rangers featured in the FA Cup between 1875 and 1881. In 1898 they merged with Watford St Peters to form the modern Watford FC.", which was the basis for my initial article.

Here, however, it says "In December 1870, the Watford Observer carried a report on Hertfordshire Rangers - the forerunners of Watford Rovers. Watford Rovers was formed by a group of lads in 1881 who had been given permission by the Earl of Essex to kick a football around in Cassiobury Park. In 1882, home games began in Vicarage Meadow and a year later, the club's name was changed to West Herts. In 1898, a rival club, Watford St Mary's, was absorbed by West Herts and the name 'Watford' was formally adopted."

Version 3 says "The club takes the year of its formation as 1881 when Watford Rovers was formed. This club amalgamated in 1890 with West Hertfordshire Rangers, believed to have been formed in 1865. In 1896, the club joined the Southern League Second Division, turning professional the following year. For a period the town boasted two professional clubs but it quickly became clear that this was not sustainable and in 1898, West Herts Rangers and Watford St Mary’s FC merged to form Watford FC."

Finally, we have "They were formed in 1881 as Watford Rovers. They later merged with Hertfordshire Rangers and Watford St Mary’s to become Watford FC."

Unfortunately, the history section of the club's own website is "under construction" so is of no help at all at present. Can you clarify the position and perhaps include a brief summary of the early history in the Watford article, and correct any errors in the Herts Rangers page. Kelly Grovier

Hi Mike! I'm a bit new to this and just wondered: the helpful change that you made to this poet's page seem to have altered the way that the snippet for the wiki page looks when Googled (try Googling "Kelly Grovier", and you'll see what I mean! Rather than giving the first line or two of the article, it now gives the catergory fields "ALTERNATIVE NAMES. SHORT DESCRIPTION, Academic and poet. DATE OF BIRTH. PLACE OF BIRTH, United States. DATE OF DEATH. PLACE OF DEATH", which isn't really what a surfer wants.) Is there a way of fixing this, do you think?? I'd love to know for future as it has happened to pages I've edited too! Thanks for getting back to me. I've consulted the "Wikipedia:WikiProject Persondata" page and it recommends the following: "The persondata template should be appended to each article between the end of the main body and the start of the categories (or, if present, before the DEFAULTSORT template)." I see, though, that you had appended it *after* the categories (and DEFAULTSORT template) -- easily done!, I should think -- and so, if it's o.k. with you, I've moved the persondata up. Current squads

As I said on WP:Cricket, if it's going to be the current squad, it should be just that: the current squad. Darren Pattinson hasn't even been named in the England A squad for the winter, so how can you say he is in the current England squad? You can't!
