Your Sandbox[edit]

I was going to reply to your question on the help desk, but I see that it has already been answered. Looking at your sandbox did however suggest to me that there is going to be another problem: the material there appears to be original research, and accordingly stands no realistic chance of being accepted as an article. I thought it only fair to warn you before you put in more work, so you avoid disappointment. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:34, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Andy-I'm new to this Wikipedia communication system, so I don't know if I am sending you a personal message or if this is being published to the world. First I want to thank you for saving me some time on this violin project. Allow me to set the scene. I was asked my an uncle to post the wikipedia article about building violins. He wrote a book on this and applied his training as an engineer to analyze and create some violins. Reading over the original research info, I am still not quite sure if the material would work or not for wikipedia. He has sources listed for his footnotes, published articles etc. My question to you is, does this still qualify as "original research"? Please advise. thanks HughBennewitz (talk) 20:58, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I watchlisted this page when I made the post above - which is how I saw your reply. Anyone else can read it too though - there aren't any pages for private communication on Wikipedia. As for your draft, if it is based on your uncle's published work, it wouldn't be original research, as we define it. That doesn't mean that there aren't any problems though - firstly, you would appear to have a conflict of interest if you are using a relative's work as a source. More importantly though, the draft as it stands isn't really an encyclopaedic article. It reads more like a research paper - a primary source concerning a single set of experiments. Wikipedia articles are always based around multiple sources, and are intended to summarise such sources, to provide an overview giving a balanced perspective on the subject matter as a whole. And I note that Wikipedia already covers violin acoustics to some limited extent - both in the main violin article, and in violin construction and mechanics. If a discussion of your uncle's research merits inclusion anywhere, it would be there, rather than in a separate article - and as a summary, rather than the detailed description found in your draft. Inclusion would however depend on the publication being accepted as a reliable source for the relevant content - which, for a topic like this, would probably be dependent on it being reviewed and/or cited in appropriate academic journals or similar publications. Perhaps you could provide the necessary details - title, publisher etc - and we can proceed from there. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:37, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
