Userboxes and Userpage

Hi! Yes, i too agree that FireFox's Userpage design is sweeping the wikiworld by storm!! Also, i was wondering if you still have userboxes? I couldn't see a link, but maybe i am going blind!--Ali K 11:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes, the design does seem rather popular. And I do, but they are auto-hidden (towards the page bottom), since in a recent RfA people appealed I had less userboxes, so I thought hiding was a good comprimise. Ian¹³_ID:540053 17:15, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for layout! and question: citation standard?

• BTW, I have 'stolen' your layout for my user page, too ! ;-) I tried to resist, but it is too nice.
• Beside that and your obvious experience. Do you know if there is already progress in createing a citation standard, e.g. DOI and PMID, or even better a WID (Wiki ID). We will need some templates and [jabref.sf.net Jabref] can be easily adapted to export the correct template for Wikipedia. I do not mean the mentioned templates, I would even more like to have a Wikipedia analog for URLs, like

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOI:whatever and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMID:whatever which are both linked to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WID:whatever
For the WID there might be some rules, e.g. JournalName-Year-Volume-StartPage-EndPage, which should be unique. And, to which people should I talk about that? Joerg Kurt Wegner 23:13, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Well, I created WP:UB to help organise userboxes, and I make my statements because I am against the censorship and generic template we are expected to follow as Wikipedians outline in the gven view. If we are not allowed free speech, and Wiki is turned into a unjust dictatorship, I feel many would not be prepared to be part of it. In my opinion we need POV amoungst editors (not in articles) in order to establish an accurate and well balanced article, and to keep the community thriving, otherwise Wikipedia will only destroy itself. I do however appologise, but I am not prepared to join UDUIW, I am to be neutral in my work, and not be associated with an aspect of not comprimising, I wish you good luck, and I will continue to support allowing people to state their individuality, and I fear it will soon reach the state where even a userpage is not acceptable. An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Hockey at the Summer Olympics

I've reverted your move - so far, on the talk page, one person has proposed the move and one (me) has opposed it. That's no consensus to move the page, and by default, implies no move should be done. More importantly, Category:Hockey at the Summer Olympics is also listed for renaming on CFD, and at present looks likely to be unmoved. Improper userbox deletion

I'm really reluctant to bring this up and start another wheel war, but the unilateral deletion of {{User no rand}} is the last straw. I'm really trying to assume good faith, but Tony Sidaway and a few others have taken it upon themselves to bypass the standard process of template deletion (again). If you view the past 5000 deletions and use you browser to search for "Template:User", you will see at least a dozen deletions which haven't gone through TFD within the last week or so. I am coming to you because I think that the rules and process are important, and deletion requires consensus. Otherwise, we might as well let WoW run things. First and foremost, I'm looking for this to be undeleted:

• 11:20, 31 January 2006 Tony Sidaway deleted "Template:User no Rand" (attack userbox)

since that is absolute nonsense (IIRC, it said that "This user opposes all forms of Randroid thought"). That's irrelevant, since it is up to TfD to determine what is and isn't an attack userbox. Also, I think all the other unilateral deletions within the last week or so should be undeleted and brought to TFD, if necessary. I really don't have the time nor the energy to do a RfC/RfA, so I beg you to please stop this nonsense before such actions are required. I'm sorry - but is there some misunderstanding? Could you please refer to which actions I have conducted which are questionable? And also, I am unsure of what action you wish me to take - I am not an administrator, so I can not delete nor undelete things, so may I therefore ask you clarify your statement. Thanks! Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

too complicated

The two templates cencerned (User democrat + pro-choice), have both been deleted under CSD T1. This is the new deletion criteria for templates, which forbids polemical or inflammatory aspects. Thanks. I figure fighting the userbox-gestapo would be pointless. It just seems blindingly obvious to me that if one has potential biases based on politics (or whatever), properly displaying them on you user page might allow other people to be aware of such biases and as such, pay extra attention. Yes, yes, it's all getting very silly. Even more silly is the extent some admins are going to to delete them, and there have been blocks and even desysopings for trying to stop the victimisation. I dislike the 'polemical' addition to T1 as well, it changed the meaning, and means that even {{User:KyraVixen/Userboxes/Pancakes}} can be deleted. Anyone who opposes seems to die at present, which doesn't say much for the Wikipedia community. Ian13/talk 14:59, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Elections Request

I have a request of my fellow candidates, and of the voters -- that all candidates give a vote to every other candidate.

It may seem that this request goes against the idea that leadership and potential leadership of our group should be neutral, a precedent that has been followed since the beginning of Esperanza by JCarriker, but I beg to disagree.

For one, mathematically all votes would be cancelled out, but unlike if we stayed silent, we are showing an affirmation of our support for each other.

To me, that's what Esperanza's about. I've had disagreements with many people in Esperanza, but i'll always support them in some form or another as long as I believe as they'll do the same for me -- as long as we're unified in a belief that kindness can cure the ills of Wikipedia as a whole.

Community Justice

Dear members of Community Justice,

This message is just a simple newsletter, telling you of some recent progress.

Community Justice didn't get as many members as we initially hoped, however we currently have 11, including a few sysops.

The temporary council is now fully set-up, and it will remain in it's current form unless someone contacts me (or uses the talk page) to say that they wish to join the council, or to hold a higher post. In this case, an election will be organised.

We have created two warning tags: {{civil1}} and {{civil2}}. These aren't been widely used, so I ask you to use them when you see fit.
