  • I've blocked you for filing this report, which I've removed and should not have been filed. The IP had already been blocked in a range block hours before you filed, and you should also not have created a userpage for the IP with a template. I've removed the report and deleted the IP userpage. You've been warned many times for filing bad reports at SPI for various reasons. Your continuing to do so despite those warnings resulted in this block.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:03, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
  • I've blocked you for 72h for filing a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/BlaccCrab. First, the account was blocked three hours before you filed the report. Second, you requested a CU without explaining why, making it look like you wanted an already-blocked account confirmed. Third, you included links when you should include diffs. Finally, the links you provided were both of the puppet. You did not compare them to the master or any socks. I strongly urge you to stop filing SPI reports until you have the competence to do so.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:30, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
  • @IanDBeacon Always listen to warnings from admins. If you really want to do behind-the-scene things, I suggest staying away from Administrator Incident Noticeboard, SPI related things, attempting to fix any pages that are marked with speedy deletion. So simple behind-the-scene things you should do instead. I was going to suggest fixing redlinks and removing unassociated contents related to the main idea of the template, but it looks like you've had problems with templates in the past. Another option for you is, fixing references that are causing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:CS1_errors:_external_links or other types of CS1 errors. The CS1 error type that is linked, is one of the easiest ones to fix. It will be a good start for you. To find pages that have these errors click on the link. But please read what ever it says on the page about how this error happens, and what is CS1 and CS2 before doing anything. I hope you really learn from the block that Sro23 gave you, for your disruptive behavior. Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 00:24, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

SPI

Hi IanDBeacon. I thought that this SPI was unnecessary. The accounts were clearly only created to harass Wikipedia administrators (just look at their usernames), and opening an SPI in this case basically created a shrine that gives needless recognition to the vandal, which is actually counterproductive. Please be mindful of this in the future, as unfortunately, you may be blocked again if this recurs.

Basically, if it is absolutely clear that an account needs to be blocked for problematic behavior (e.g. clear vandalism/harassment/attacks), nine times out of ten, you don't need to file an SPI even if you also suspect that the accounts are sockpuppets. Just send them to WP:AIV. The accounts are already blocked, anyway, which is pretty much the strongest recourse we can administer at SPI, so the administrative benefit to an SPI is marginal at best. Request

Based on the warnings you've received above from Bbb23 and Mz7, I am requesting that you stop participating in the behind the scenes bits of Wikipedia for the time being (that includes "vandal fighting") Your recent reports to AIV and overuse of templated warnings for what is at most content disputes is disruptive, and if you continue I will block you indefinitely. For now, you should focus on content, not maintenance. When you have more experience working in articles, consider applying at WP:CVUA. TonyBallioni (talk) 00:05, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni: My apologizes, I have shut off TW on my end for now. IanDBeacon (talk) 00:06, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm sure you are trying to help, but by overzealously enforcing what you (incorrectly) view as the rules of Wikipedia, it creates a climate where good faith contributors don't want to contribute. It also takes away time that I could be spending on RL work or other work on-wiki having to decline the AIV requests and talk to you about it. For now, just focus on content The backlogs and vandals will be there for decades to come. TonyBallioni (talk) 00:13, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, IanDBeacon. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

AIV

For info with IPv6 - take the first four parts 2600:1:9c39:d8c5 and add ::/64 to get Special:Contributions/2600:1:9C39:D8C5::/64 - wiki will expand that for you to Special:Contributions/2600:1:9C39:D8C5:0:0:0:0/64. A /64 on IPv6 is normally one person. I blocked that range. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:45, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Sock tags etc.

Note that I've reverted your edits to User talk:184.56.47.51. There was no need to make this change as the tag was added by the IP themselves, you added a dynamic IP tag to an IP that has proven to be anything but dynamic, and you're doing all of this several months after the last edit by the IP. This is just busy work with no tangible benefit to the encyclopedia. I appreciate that you are trying to help, but please steer clear of anything involving sock tagging and SPI until you have a better understanding of the nuance behind the policy and processes. Thank you, -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 23:52, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

The Original Barnstar
Anyone receiving this much vandalism must be doing something right. Dlohcierekim (talk) 22:29, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello IanDBeacon,

Acceptable Wikipedia articles are built by summarizing what reliable, independent, secondary sources say about the topic. None of these sources you propose to add meet that standard. Nothing published by Disney is independent, and blogs are not considered reliable sources. If you want to expand the article, you must find truly independent sources. Those might include newspaper or magazine articles by professional travel journalists, or books about Disney theme parks by authors unconnected with Disney. The article in its current form is at risk of being deleted because the referencing is so poor. Please improve the article by finding acceptable references instead of making matters worse by adding more poor references. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:39, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Re: LTA report

Hey. Sorry it took me a minute to get around to it, but I wanted to explain the deletion briefly. That case has a lot of stuff going on that is private. The case page was largely inaccurate, and in any event, the CU team is very aware of that sockmaster. An LTA report isn't likely to help us track them in any meaningful way. The LTA thrives on recognition, previously trying to create that page twice, so I think keeping it in existence is highly likely to increase their activity. I'd appreciate the name of the sockmaster not being used in this discussion, again to deny recognition. Hope that makes sense. ~ Rob13Talk 22:49, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

@BU Rob13: Thanks for the info. It was created twice by him anyway in the past. Best course of action from this point on is to leave him alone and not feed him any further. --IanDBeacon (talk) 22:54, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey IanDBeacon,

I saw you reverted what I edited about 'Forum for Democracy'. Now I know what we said pretty much came down to the same thing, but I though my version was structured a bit more clear and included extra information.

Maybe we can structure a better way of saying it together? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freerka (talkcontribs) 23:05, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Just an FYI, what you added was not true. Based on the edits you made I can easily say that you will need to cite your sources more carefully and be sure that you brush up on WP:3RR as well. --IanDBeacon (talk) 23:21, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
I will admit, I might have almost created an editing war and will try to prevent that in the future. That said, what was factually wrong about what I said? Forum for Democracy did become the biggest party in the Netherlands during the 2019 Provincial elections and they did get a total of 86 seats. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freerka (talkcontribs) 23:24, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello IanDBeacon, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of User:Eric M. Information icon Thank you for making a report about 173.152.29.166 (talk · contribs · block log) on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, it appears that the editor you reported may not have engaged in vandalism, or the user was not sufficiently or appropriately warned. Please note there is a difference between vandalism and unhelpful or misguided edits made in good faith. If the user continues to vandalise after a recent final warning, please re-report it. Please check the date/time on warnings. Vandalism must be ongoing and the editor must have been recently warned in order to report at AIV. KillerChihuahua 20:13, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

For future reference: There's no need to repeatedly revert to keep your comment on the talk page. Firstly, the editor technically is permitted to remove it. Secondly, I cannot imagine that any admin would unblock an account blocked for vandalism without reviewing their contributions - including, of course, the one where they removed your comment from their talk page. I think Favonian got quite a few pings in the process. Huon (talk) 16:44, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Crosswiki grief

I see that you are getting some xwiki grief. If it is becoming problematic for your user and user talk pages, then please let me know, as I have global filter that can reduce some of that grief on the small wikis, which just means that we have to actively manage the large wikis. If they start to cause other problems on other small wikis, then we can escalate defences, maybe with a combination of title blacklist and whitelist mods. Anyway, give me a ping if we need to do anything. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:52, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: Sounds good. If this worsens, then semi-protection may be necessary too. Bear in mind a lot of this grief is coming from the Denver Dodo, and as of recently MRY and others too. --IanDBeacon (talk) 03:14, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
The filter is somewhat operating like that, though just different criteria; doing that level of rights protection is labour intensive, hence this compromise. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:38, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
If you have a U/UT place outside the larger wikis where you are expecting to get traffic then please let me know, and I will add an exclusion; otherwise implemented global filter 181. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:44, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

I warned about unexplained content removal a few times, all I really want is an explanation for the action I don't care about the article either way. But they seem to be completely unresponsive to me. Would you mind interceding here as I think they would be more likely to respect and respond to an admin than an IP. I also note without comment that this user reported me to AIV on multiple occasions as you are no doubt aware, thanks for your time. 2604:2000:8FC0:4:68BA:3B32:8613:8B6D (talk) 01:43, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Copy that Ian. Bizarre to get blocked for removing harassment though. No wonder the WMF feel like waving a bit of stick around occasionally. ——SN54129 17:07, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
OK, I see it was a false report, so I have unblocked your account. The false report has also been removed, but please do not remove reports from WP:ANI, even if they are false - and, especially, do not edit war there. Someone else will deal with ANI reports, and will examine any claims before acting. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 17:02, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
It was blatant trolling, and Ian was pinged to it. Reverting per DENY was the right call. I've hidden the edits in question as purely disruptive. – bradv🍁 17:19, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Ian, I've notice a pattern of you accusing various IP's/users of being Nate Speed simply because they edit his target pages. We're both familiar with Nate's style, and 97.124.217.78 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) clearly isn't him. I also believe 184.98.179.61 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) isn't him either. Nate Speed isn't going to be the only unregistered editor interested in film distribution articles and the like. The fact that you suspect these editors might possibly be Nate isn't a good enough reason to be reporting them and reverting their edits. You're going to need better evidence other than "it's an IP editing some NS target pages". Now, if the IP's are adding unsourced content, incorrect information, etc. then feel free to revert, but don't call them Nate Speed socks when clearly they aren't. If it's an obvious NS IP, shouting in the edit summaries or threatening you, then go ahead and report straight to AIV. But I think were not always dealing with the same person here. Steward requests via TW

Hiya! Noticed you've reported a steward using Twinkle. Would you mind sharing with me where to do that? I know how to do RfD and QD at the moment, but I didn't know it's possible to do that for Steward requests. Thanks in advance. — Infogapp1 (talk) 14:47, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Infogapp1, do you want to tell us which edit this was with? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 14:52, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi! Emir of Wikipedia I'm referring to this edit. I currently do my reports manually, though I have been using TW in Simple Wiki for RfD and QD requests, so I was wondering if I can do the same. If it's only available for selected users, that's fine too, I just wanted to know. Thanks to you both. — Infogapp1 (talk) 14:58, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Infogapp1, Do you have meta:User:Xiplus/TwinkleGlobal installed? I can't see you when I search for you.[1] Or am I on about something else? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 15:03, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
I don't think I do. I'll look into it now. Here's the link to my SW contributions for your ref. — Infogapp1 (talk) 15:05, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
I guess I don't have it since I haven't made many edits in the said project yet? That's fine, I can wait until I've made considerable contributions and will continue to add reports manually for now. Thanks again for helping look into it. — Infogapp1 (talk) 15:10, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

The person making the ANI report is a Sockpuppet, just an FYI. --IanDBeacon (talk) 15:19, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
IanDBeacon, I kinda figured that, with the sole contribution being the ANI thread and a lack of diffs. Should be cleared up soon enough. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:20, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Take it easy

Fighting with a vandal on their talk page just draws attention and makes things more frustrating to clean up (see also, WP:DFTT)... we will take care of it, don't worry. — The Earwig (talk) 03:42, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

41.242.138.2

Hi, I was routinely looking at Recent Changes, and 41.242.138.2's incredibly abusive comment on your talk-page/sandbox appeared in front of my nose. It was really so awful I dumped it at ANI, so I'm letting you know that it's there. I'm frankly quite shocked. Elemimele (talk) 13:24, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

The Wall

Hi, I don't understand this revert. The long standing version had UPI as the distributor (they were in fact the UK distributor). The recent LTA vandal changed it to MGM, which was the US distributor. I restored UPI as the UK distributor, and also added MGM, with sources for both distributors. You have now restored to the LTA's version, listing only MGM, without the UK distributor UPI, and without any sources. Did you make a mistake or am I misunderstanding something? CodeTalker (talk) 19:03, 2 August 2021 (UTC) My mistakes I’ve since reverted it. IanDBeacon (talk) 19:04, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
