Thank you for telling about Wiki Preteen. It is sort of fascinating to find some Wikipedians who are younger or about the same age with me and are fairly active.

P.S. As of August 1, 2006, I've made over 847 edits and is going up:-)

Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 22:42, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, I am slightly declining my activity, although I will still be around in Wikipedia. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 23:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
I posted a reply on the board for WikiRally. Anyway, yeah most of us are around the same age. Try and spread the word! Nice to know there are some really active preteens. Julz

Now I've made 943 edits, 57 edits short to 1000 edits. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody 01:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the update

Sorry, I am generation Y... Julz

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #3

Number 3, August 6, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

"Tropical Storm Lee was probably national news at the time, depending on where it went and what it did. Millions of people knew about it."

Storm of the month

Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was a damaging tropical storm that caused significant damage to areas of southeastern China, the Philippines and Taiwan. The fourth named storm of the 2006 Pacific typhoon season formed to the east of the Philippines on July 8 and moved towards Taiwan, strengthening as it did so. It reached its peak strength of 110 km/h (70 mph) on July 13, shortly before it made its first landfall on northern Taiwan. Bilis then made a second landfall in Fujian, China on July 14 after officials evaucated over 1 million residents from the areas in the storm's path. The remnant lasted for several days after landfall and brought heavy rain to inland China. The most significant damage occurred in Hunan, where heavy flooding and mudslides destroyed over 31,000 homes and killed 345. Despite never reaching typhoon strength, the storm was responsible for $2.5 billion in damage and at least 625 fatalities in total.

Other tropical cyclone activity

There were 10 other tropical cyclones worldwide in July, with activity in all 4 northern hemisphere basins.

 • In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall on Nantucket on July 21 before bringing rain to Atlantic Canada.
 • In the East Pacific, Hurricane Bud was a Category 3 hurricane that formed on July 10 and dissipated on July 15.
 • Hurricane Carlotta twice became a minimal hurricane before degenerating into a remnant low on July 16.
 • Hurricane Daniel reached Category 4 strength and was predicted to make landfall in Hawaii before it dissipated on July 26.
 • Tropical Storm Emilia brought tropical storm-force winds to southern Baja California on July 26 and was forecast to become a hurricane but this did not occur.
 • Tropical Storm Fabio formed late on July 31 but did not last long in the face of strong shear.
 • In the West Pacific,Typhoon Ewiniar (Ester) formed on June 29 to the east of the Philippines, it reached Category 4 strength before making landfall in South Korea on July 10 as a tropical storm. It killed at least 36 people.
 • Typhoon Kaemi (Glenda) formed on July 2 and passed over Taiwan before dissipating over mainland China on July 26. It brought heavy rain to Taiwan and the Philippines and killed at least 32 people in China.
 • Typhoon Prapiroon (Henry) formed on July 28 but did not reach tropical storm strength until August.
 • In the North Indian Ocean, Tropical Storm 03B formed on June 30 near the east Indian coast before making landfall on the Orissa coast on July 2.

Useful sources of tropical cyclone information

The following organizations provide helpful information for writing about tropical cyclones, both past and present.

In his April Tropical Cyclone Summary, Gary Padgett stated that he will extensively reference Wikipedia in his future summaries. I have communicated with him and he has stated that he is "very much interested in cooperating" with us. He has also provided me with a copy of Jack Beven's weekly summaries (covering 1991-1996). If you want a copy of them, email me.--Nilfanion (talk)

Why I left Wikipedia

Hi Icelandic Hurricane. The reason why I left the English Wikipedia is a couple reasons. 1, I was blocked for 12 hours by UkPaolo for no reason at all. I decided that it would be good to be in another language editing; but I haven't made much contributons to simple. 2, Many users were threating me a lot and 3, I left on account of being bothered by User:Russoc4 and User:Apostrophe. I then wanted to return, I did and I returned for a couple weeks and then decided that this was the worst encylopedia ever and switched to simple. I've been very busy and haven't gotten much time to work on simple but I like the way simple is. Yes, most reasons were with the Harry Potter Wikiproject and sadly I don't know if I'm returning. I just thought I should leave this message here. If you want to reply to me leave a message at simple:User talk:ForestH2, I'll respond much quicker and I'll leave a message on your simple english page. Regards, ForestH2 t/c 15:13, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

RfA?

Would you like it if I nominated you for administration? You're an experienced editor (in addition to having Template:User wikipedia/Administrator someday), and I'm sure you'd gain lots of support. Please reply, either on this page or on my talk page. --Gray Porpoise 16:59, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I hate to say this, but I doubt you're ready, from my perspective (in case you're wondering who am I to say that, I'm NSLE). You still don't fully understand policy, which is a big requirement at RFA. Nonetheless, if you do choose to have a go, good luck. Chacor 17:03, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
You have stated your acceptance, so the next step is to answer the questions. --Gray Porpoise 18:58, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Awesome, dude! Yeah, I'll be glad to vote for you. →Cyclone1 19:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Icelandic, don't be suprised if you get lots of "strong opposes" and "suggest withdrawal" on the RfA. With minimal edits in XFDs, no RC patrolling and the like I wouldn't be at all suprised. Remember what happened with Hink?--Nilfanion (talk) 19:32, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

To maximize RfA support, you should start working on more extensive answers to the questions. Let me know if you need help with that. --Gray Porpoise 19:38, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

So far, about 6 people aren't supporting you because of your answers to the questions. You might be able to drastically improve your RfA if you come up with stronger answers. --Gray Porpoise 22:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Well I hate to say, but your polls aren't going so well, looks similar to Hurricanehink's polls. Well anyhow, I've added a barnstar to the end of your userpage, hope you don't mind. But I suggest that when you become more active again in mid-September that you begin doing some anti-vandalism patrolling (which could be hard work and very boring) and understanding some "Wiki-policy(s)"; but you don't really need to listen my advisories unless to wanna. Nonetheless, good luck on your RfA:-) Alastor Moody (talk) 07:28, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, word of free advise

I would not do this. Some on the past have seen thissort of thing as vote stacking. Cheers.  :) Dlohcierekim 20:19, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad that I was informed, but I agree that vote-stacking can be perceived as a very bad thing. Ultimately though, I also agree with the above comments that you (IH) should brace yourself for a lot of strong opposes in the RfA. And to be honest, though I definitely praise your enthusiasm, I have to admit I would have concerns about whether or not you are ready for admin tools. My first question would be why should you be an admin? What it is that you'd like to do, that you're currently being prevented from doing by lack of adminship? The admin flag is not meant as a reward or a promotion -- it's simply something to help with policing Wikipedia. --Elonka 21:07, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Please do not do this on Simple English Wikipedia either, as you have done. If you do, it will be reverted and you may be blocked from editing. Thank you. Billz 21:16, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Your sig

I just wanted to point out that the email link in your sig doesn't work. Now, you have

íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal).

What you want is:

íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal).

See you around. —Mets501 (If responding, please do so on my talk page) 21:36, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

RFA-My comment

Listen.I only voted you neutral over that annoying situation. I'll change my vote to support on the following conditions.

 1. Help me with my TD 14 (1987) article by getting me information & all my LNBS storms/hurricanes.
 2. Never steal my article work again.(You forgot Matthew).Bonnie was a ticker.
 3. If you do anything drastic, that involves both of us, and we get scolded for it, dont keep trying.

Agree under them or i will keep my Neutral position.HurricaneCraze32 22:29, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok, i got a little furious.Notice i made the article.HurricaneCraze32 12:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
Let me make this clear from a policy standpoint - Icelandic is free to take and build on your edits as he wishes. As soon as you make an edit, it's licensed under the GFDL. Chacor 12:58, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I liked it

"Too bad I can't add this, but we have our first indirect injury from Beryl, me! I fell off my bike and hurt myself pretty bad, and I wouldn't have been riding home if it weren't for Beryl. So I thought I'd just let somebody know." I giggled. Not because you hurt yourself (I hope you've healed by now), but because it was meant lightly. So, just thought I'd let you know someone appreciated it in the spirit it was intended. TransUtopian 23:19, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Your sandbox

Hey, you might want to reconsider how you actually make up your articles when working in your sandbox. Doing it all on one page makes for a series of nearly impossible to fix cut and paste moves, which has legal issues associated with it. What would be better is if you worked them up in a series of seperate pages User:Icelandic Hurricane/Sandbox/Typhoon Patsy (1970), User:Icelandic Hurricane/Sandbox/Tropical Storm Hermine (1970) and so on. That enables you to move the pages to article space when you have finished writing them. If you want them all viewable on the same page then transclude them into the Sandbox page. The content of your sandbox would then look like this:

You could then use the Javascript to wrap around the archived ones like you are doing - except this would enable the moving of articles properly. Thanks.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:22, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Templates

On your RfA, you asked if there's a template for warning vandals. There are many, which can be found at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. --Gray Porpoise 13:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

If you don't want that open, there's another alternative. Type in "TestTemplates" into the vandal's page, then preview. This will produce a table, from which you can select the correct one. Always remember to substitute your warning templates. Chacor 14:57, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Jose image

I'll answer for Nilfanion.

 1. You were given permission to use on Wikipedia - not its mirrors, which unfortunately don't take this into account.
 2. The image is copyrighted. Tagging it GFDL is a copyright violation. Chacor 15:25, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:26, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

It will probably be deleted, as the owner never gave permission for use elsewhere off Wikipedia, but mirror sites are not Wikipedia but will still use the image. Chacor 15:29, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
You can, but if he says no then it's gone. If he says yes, you need to right tag for it, or it'll still be deleted as copyvio. Chacor 15:32, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
And you need to make it clear that permission to use the images commercially is needed. The mirrors should be allowed to sell the images.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:35, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
An image that you uploaded, Image:Jose1999cleanup.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

IRC

You need an IRC client to use IRC. If you're using a web browser to access the irc:// protocol, it won't work. Are you using Mozilla Firefox as your current browser? G.He 00:27, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm. Try IceChat. G.He 02:10, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
If you don't want to download anything here's a web-based IRC client (but it pings easily). Chacor 03:22, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Your RfA

Your RfA just failed. The primary reason that people, including me, voted against you was "weak answers to questions" or not using edit summaries enough, or both. While I can't really help you make better answers to your questions, I can help you use edit summaries all the time. In your preferences, go to the "Editing" tab. There should be a check box that says something like "prompt me when I don't leave an edit summary". If you check that box and save your preferences, you will get a notice that will tell you to use an edit summary. If you use that option and write better answers, I have no doubt that you will become an administrator. I recommend waiting a while before going back to RfA. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 20:51, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I was your "moral support" voter and I hope that you will keep on doing the good work you're doing as a contributor despite the outcome of the RfA, which I'm sure you suspected for the past couple of days is how it would turn out this time around. Your response to my comment on the RfA was very mature and I'm sure you will take the outcome in good stride. Miss Madeline is right about the edit summaries and I hope you will take her advice. Regards, Newyorkbrad 21:09, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I liked your perseverance on your RfA. You're experienced, and I'm sure you'll succeed on your next RfA if you listen to users' constructive criticisms. --Gray Porpoise 02:18, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi IH, the above page was listed for speedy deletion under R1 by another user. Please let me know if you want it deleted. Thanks -- Samir धर्म 22:20, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't know why he wanted it deleted, but wanted to OK it by you first. Sorry about your RfA, by the way. Most second RfA's tend to pass, and I expect the same will be true for yours, as the issues raised this one seem to be minor and easily remediable. Cheers -- Samir धर्म 22:24, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Add: And that's because an admin should clearly know what consensus is, and there's no hard value of 75% (that's just a common number), people have been promoted with less, and failed to promote with more. – Chacor 15:06, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

RfA congratulations

Congratulations on not totally leaving wikipedia after a failed RfA. I'll, of course, support Wikipedia:requests for adminship/Icelandic Hurricane 2. Looking forward to it. A fellow All-American Rejects fan, c. tales \\tk// 16:50, 20 August 2006 (UTC) Nice RfA thanks message by the way. I like the colours.

Your RFA thank you box

Your message is goofing up on at least some user's talk pages; see this diff for an example. I believe code that will work, assuming you're using boilerplate, is:

(I removed the table, and closed the rest of your divs, on places where it was creating a problem for the next comment down the line being swallowed up in your blue divs).

Your next proposed RfA

Thanks for your thank you note, but one think has been me slightly confused; you said, "I hope to see you vote in my next RfA in late 2006, early 2007". So I assume that you must have now begun doing some admin's work (like Chacor), but if you relase the secret, won't other people find out and like *what should I say...* . Alastor Moody (talk) 09:04, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Uhm... you're way off base with that, what you've said makes little sense. Icelandic is not an admin. "Admin work" is only done by admins, although non-admins CAN do non-controversial minor duties (like closing outright KEEP AFDs). I don't do much policy stuff anymore, as I'm no longer an admin. I suspect Icelandic is not going to get himself too involved, as he says he's on wikibreak. – Chacor 09:11, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I will surely support you as we require wikipedians with integrity. --Bhadani 14:34, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, if you haven't heard by now, Maria Esther de Capovilla, the world's oldest woman has died at age 116. Fortunately, you selected her in my WDP, and she counts as your first hit of the year, landing you a spot in the scoreboard with 6 points.

Also, it looks like I may have got part of my Ernesto prediction right. It does look like he will parallel Florida :) .
