Translation help needed

Hey, I saw you mentioned at Wikipedia:Translators_available#Latin-to-English. Translation help needed for the articles Rus' people, Rus (name), Kievan Rus', Rus' Khaganate, and probably also Varangians and Annales Bertiniani.

Original Latin source: [1] (starting with "Venerunt etiam legati Graecorum a Theophilo imperatore directi, Theodosius videlicet, Calcedonensis metropolitanus episcopus, et Theophanius spatharius, ferentes cum donis imperatore dignis epistolam quos imperator quinto decimo Kalendas Iunii in Ingulenheim honorifice suscepit" on that page, and continuing AFAIK for two more pages).

The Latin source I need help on is the Annales Bertiniani, which is a collection of Frankish annals that was completed in 882 AD. The issue behind this is the historical first mention of the Rus' people, which was a Norse tribe, also known as the Varangians from Sweden that, starting in the 9th century from Novgorod and Kiev (Kievan Rus') and allegedly under the leadership of their chieftain Rurik (or rather RøRikR in Old Norse) conquered portions of the Baltics and today's northwestern Russia, a realm which was soon known as the Rus' Khaganate (with the result that lots of placenames, such as Novgorod, actually have an Old Norse etymology). Eventually, the Rus' Khaganate, even though the Norse ruling elite was but small and soon assimilated to the Balto-Slavic population, became the nucleus and namegiver for modern Russia.

The thing is, this so-called Normannic theory is still kinda controversial, as modern Russian scholars often regard it as a modern romantic nationalist myth originating with late-19th century Pan-Germanism. What the Russians are saying is that the original Rus were actually Slavs. Now, these 9th century Annales Bertiniani seem to be a rather authoritative, and, given their time of origination, pretty concise, source to refute these Russian scholars.

What I get of this Latin text is only the gist of it. Apparently, a delegation of Rus people were interrogated by Frankish Emperor Louis the Pious at Ingelheim am Rhein in 839 AD, where they said that:

• the name of their tribe was Rus (spelled "Rhos" in this Latin text, maybe via Byzantine Greek translation? As far as I can tell, a letter from Byzantine Emperor Theophilos or Michael III is mentioned),
• they originally came from Sweden
• but had settled in what is northwestern Russia today (I find this information several times in modern sources, attributing it to the Annales Bertiniani, but *WHAT THE HECK* was their contemporary name for "northwestern Russia"?), and
• that they had switched to calling their chieftains chacanus now.

Chacanus is Latin for Khagan, a title they had likely borrowed from contact with the Avars while conquering from the Baltic coast southward. It's why their realm in centuries to come was to be known as the Rus' Khaganate.

But what I need for good sourcing is an exact translation of portions relevant to the informations bulleted above. Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

• My research is about how people present themselves online.

• With your consent, I will analyze the language of your user page and gather basic statistics such as the count of words, the frequency of words, the number of sections, and so on.

Tetrabiblos, book II

Hi Smerdis

In case you have the time and interest, I have just finished developing content on book II of the Tetrabiblos. I think it would benefit the page to have another editor such as yourself look over that content. Maybe you will spot areas where the text can be reduced or points made more effeciently, and I want to make sure that the tone is appropriate, in explaining the content without sanctioning it. Obviously I thought of you because you created the page and I hope to develop it inline with your original motivation.

I did have content ready for books III and IV but lost my files so need to time to recreate it. These are both themed on personal horoscopes so I intend to offer only a brief summary of both books together in a final section dedicated to detailing the book contents. Maybe some time before I can get back to finish that (presuming, of course, someone else doesn't do it first).

Two weeks ago you closed the AfD for this article and userfied the article. I did not see why at the time: there's a struck suggestion to userfy and none from the article creator, who's last comment was he has copied the pages. He wanted deletion postponed as it would take "a little while" to find an alternative host, but they now have that [3], as well as the original site [4]. The page here hasn't been touched since. Hello Smerdis of Tlon: I appreciate your rescue tag on The Butler Arms Hotel and I appreciate all comments, even those not favourable. On reading the hotel register one cannot use the majority of names as their addresses are too broad. But there is delight in finding ones so precise as Scraftoft Hall which is equalled by finding double barrelled and treble barrelled Christian names. These show that Aristocracy think differently to the rest of us; for the exact member of the family is unmistakeable even before one makes assurance double sure by checking the date he lived with the entry in the register. The first entry shows that the guest, J B Hayens had expectations of the hotel and of the lake, so both were already notable. I began this enquiry in the belief that too much was made of the holidays of Charlie Chaplin, without any explanation of why he arrived in the first place. He wouldn't have come to the Butler Arms if it were not already famous, nor would those before him right back to 1884 - and beyond that to 1865 when the hotel was an inn. But the pity is that there was an elegant hotel in the village at that time which lasted until 1971 when another was built in its place. But there is no record of who stayed there, nor is there record from many more hotels throughout the world. That is the value of the Butler Arms register. It isn't that it had more famous people than elsewhere but that we have a record of who stayed there. All guests mentioned in my article are notable and all I can hope is that by staying there they have made the hotel notable also. But there is still the problem that the register may not be notable in so far as it hasn't been published. I think there is nothing more notable than that it exists and contains such notable names. If I can get into the hang of communicating via the internet maybe there is far more can be said in this regard.

Contest Irdeto Deletion

Can you please remove the deletion tag you placed on the Irdeto page. This artcle is not the same as the one you had previously deleted as I have completely rewritten the article, which now includes third-party sources and the 'marketing' language you said it had before has been removed and is now strictly just facts. It says solutions because they offer both products and security solutions so this is accurate. As for the references I made sure not to include press releases. They are a subsidary of Naspers, but I definitely think they warrant a page of their own as they provide security for very well known companies such as Netflix and D-Link. Also, if you notice in the aquisitions they just bought BD+ technology from Rovi which will allow them to provide a soltution to protect all Blu-ray disks. There are a lot of articles on Wikipedia of companies much smallar and that have made much less of a footprint in technology; therefore, I definitely think this page is a worth while one for me to have created. If you have any editing suggestions then that would be great so we can make this page better OttawaWiki (talk) 21:59, 14 November 2011 (UTC).

If you read their website and any of the third-party sources used in this article they don't provide products they provide solutions to prevent piracy. A solution is not just a chemical it is also an action or process of solving a problem, which is what they do. They provide a solution using security software to solve other companies piracy problems. I also explained each solution briefy. I don't know if I should change it to just product because then this would be inaccurate information. I am not sure why you tagged the page again, but I would really like to solve this and improve this page. Can you please removed the neutrality banners you placed on the Irdeto page as I went in and took out solution and replaced it with product or service. As for "provdes" and "sell" the only time it says "provides" is when it is referring to the product providing something not Irdet; you cannot say a product itself is selling something. I don't understand how Irdeto's page is any different and I feel I have made this page very brief and straight to the point. Thank you for your response. I would comply with any arbitration even if I was not part of the discussion. I have decided not to comment at this point, since your excellent outline and comments by other editors have covered the points I would have made. Also, I have not followed all the discussions on many different pages.

In covering the Signs of the Zodiac, it occurs to me that Julia Parker's book Compleat Astrologer with sales of over a million copies in 17 countries or Linda Goodman's Sun Signs (1968) and Linda Goodman's Love Signs (1978) with both titles reaching the New York Times Bestseller List, should qualify as notable (though not necessarily representative) sources. Yet, these titles may still be rejected for being primary sources - even though their descriptions are more or less in line with Babylonian and Hellenistic traditions.

In addition, I feel that there is also some contradiction by editors who rigidly enforce rules that make sense for an established science with a huge academic resources but yet reject the few experts in the field per se. This seems to be the equivalent of saying those who have studied chemistry could not be cited in an article on chemistry. Robert Currey talk 16:26, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

If you come across any more cases like that, I suggest checking the page's edit history before trying to guess what the solution is – it often turns out (as in this case) that the real problem is that a vandal has arbitrarily removed a chunk of the article, and more needs to be restored than just adding opening or closing tags. My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Category:Cisco Systems acquisitions

Hello Ihcoyc, I've seen you around quite a bit on company related articles, so I thought I'd ask for your opinion. I have noticed that there are a large number of defunct non-notable companies in Category:Cisco Systems acquisitions. I have been debating the best approach for dealing with this. Ideally, they should all be merged (if needed) and redirected to List of acquisitions by Cisco Systems. There are 80 articles in the category and approximately ~70 of them don't have enough coverage to pass the general notability guidelines. What do think would be the best way to bring this up? I believe I have to explain my rationale behind creation of this article. As you can see from the logs, this article often gets recreated, and (though I asked for it in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clear Books (2nd nomination)) doesn't get salted. Therefor, as I see it, there is no question about whether this software/company will have its article. Keeping that in mind I created an article that would cover the topic in the manner that would be the least harmful for Wikipedia: with the software as the topic, no blogs in sources and each statement directly sourced from the reviews of software. VisualCron

Hello! I wanted to ask for you advise: I nominated VisualCron (the revision before nomination) for deletion on February 13, 2012‎. Then I actually found three sources I thought were enough and so I withdraw the nomination. As the article was 100% promotive in tone I started rewriting it and found out these sources are not as useful as I thought before: they were so promotional that I can't believe they were not paid. I actually squeezed everything I could from the sources and ended up with a very inadequate and outdated article that doesn't help to show the difference between VisualCron and Windows Task Scheduler (the software in the default installation of Windows). Actually, as I get it, the difference is huge and VisualCron could be properly reviewed in depth, and I found no such reviews in the wild. Works for me. For your help in finding these, they all relate to Template:CAC Small, a template containing all of the businesses on the Paris Bourse that aren't in any of its major stock indexes. They're all publicly traded, or were at one time. Most of the redlinks on that template were there before I started looking at it. Some of the links on the template (Affine (company), Cegedim, Audika, Cegid Group, Delachaux) were a7'ed on my proposal, and deleted by others; these had nothing more than the assertion that a business by that name existed. The ones without sources or convincing claims to be encyclopedia subjects in the text, I PROD'ed. The ones I thought might be notable, I tagged for any defects I saw in style or sourcing; and finally, I put the template itself up for discussion as a collection of links to articles that mostly don't exist. - Smerdis of Tlön - killing the human spirit since 2003! 05:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks again for writing your WP:B2B essay. Lately, I've been quoting selected parts from it. I'm reluctant to link to the essay, since it makes use of the term "bull****", and I prefer to link to politer material. (Please note also that some of our editors are mere children.) I suppose I could fork the essay, but that would be impolite. I've looked at the guideline Wikipedia:Offensive material, but am unclear whether or not it demands that a change must be made. Still, I wonder if I could please have your permission to replace the term "bull****" with some other term, such as "drivel", in your essay? ("Hogwash" would be even better than "drivel", but it's an Americanism.) Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Ihcoyc. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Ihcoyc.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)

Why have I received this message? All administrators are receiving it. What prompted you to send this message? Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account. What do I need to do? Only to follow the instructions in this message. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites). Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable). Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
